Paige Bueckers honors Black women during ESPYs acceptance speech

Paige Bueckers honors Black women during ESPYs acceptance speech
The standout freshman point guard used her platform to advocate for equity rather than lauding her own accomplishments
University of Connecticut basketball star
Paige Bueckers took home the hardware for best college athlete in women’s sports at the 2021 ESPYs on Saturday, and used her acceptance speech to highlight and celebrate Black women.
“With the light that I have now as a white woman who leads a Black-led sport and celebrated here, I want to shed a light on Black women,” Bueckers said. “They don’t get the media coverage that they deserve. They’ve given so much to the sport, the community and society as a whole and their value is undeniable.”

NEW YORK – Connecticut guard Paige Bueckers won an ESPY Award on Saturday night as the best women's college athlete, and the former Hopkins High School star used her platform to acknowledge that as a white woman in a predominantly Black sport, she gets disproportionate media coverage.
"I think we should use this power together to also celebrate Black women," the 19-year-old said at the Rooftop at Pier 17, where the award ceremony was held.
Bueckers said Black women's basketball players did not get the credit they deserve. "In the WNBA last season the postseason awards, 80 percent of the winners were Black, but they got half the amount of coverage as the white athletes," she said. "So I think it's time for a change."

In 2019, WNBA player Maya Moore put her successful basketball career on hold to help overturn the 50-year prison sentence of Jonathan Irons, who was convicted of burglary and assault at the age of 18. In 2020, Irons was freed from prison, and Moore greeted him as he was released. "I feel like I can live life now," Irons said at the time of his release, according to the
New York Times. "I'm free, I'm blessed, I just want to live my life worthy of God's help and influence. . . . I thank everybody who supported me — Maya and her family."
