Yesterday, Brendan Reilly, alderman of the city’s 42nd ward, announced a proposed rezoning ordinance that could kick the sale of the prized 3-acre site (12,140 m2) at 100 West Randolph Street into high-gear. The cash-strapped State of Illinois has been considering/trying to offload the property as early as 2003. Pritzker signed a bill igniting the sale, which must be finalized by April 2022 (the original deadline was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Chicago preservationists and the greater architectural community have been rallying to save the highly idiosyncratic (but also inefficient) Helmut Jahn-designed structure from potential destruction and replacement; many, including Jahn himself, have argued that the building is a prime candidate for an adaptive reuse-focused redevelopment scheme and could be converted to serve new purposes, including housing, while keeping the wrecking ball at bay.

"The plan calls for redeveloping a sea of surface parking lots on the perimeter of Television City into 1.1 million square feet of additional studio and office space, more than doubling the existing 750,000 square feet of available space at the complex," writes Matt Hickman in The Architect's Newspaper. "The complex will gain 15 new soundstages, support facilities and production base camps, a new commissary, a multi-modal mobility hub, public realm and pedestrian/streetscape upgrades, and a 'robust transportation demand management program.'"
