Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness Designated As New England's First International Dark Sky Park

Little Lyford Pond, located in the Appalachian Mountain Club 100-Mile Wilderness Conservation Area.
The Appalachian Mountain Club's Maine Woods property in the 100-Mile Wilderness between Moosehead Lake and Baxter State Park has been designated as the first International Dark Sky Park in New England. The park is expected to drive astronomy-based tourism and additional conservation in one of the darkest remaining night skies in the eastern U.S.
To be certified as an International Dark Sky Park, AMC's conservation land had to have exceptional starry nights and a robust nocturnal environment. In other words, it needed to be separated from urban development and protective of animal species. These 75,000 forested acres have also been identified as climate resilient. And Jenny Ward, who's worked on the project for AMC, says the Dark Sky park designation illustrates what an important resource Maine has.

Fishermen at odds with Mills administration over offshore wind

“Right now this is a science project. Proposing to turn the Gulf of Maine marine life, marine mammals, and sea bottom into a test tube for the benefit of foreign corporations,” he told legislators on the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee.
Supporters of offshore wind, however, say those projects are essential to Maine’s future.
“The biggest threat to our environment, including the marine environment, is climate change,” said Beth Ahearn of Maine Conservation Voters. “We have to act to minimize the effect of climate change. So we all need to work together to develop climate solutions to get us off fossil fuel.”

Senate gives support to Sen. Maxmin's Pine Tree Amendment

AUGUSTA — The Maine Senate voted Wednesday in favor of the Pine Tree Amendment, sponsored by Senator Chloe Maxmin, D-Nobleboro. LD 489, “RESOLUTION, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine To Establish a Right to a Healthy Environment,” received unanimous support in an initial vote.
As amended, LD 489, the Pine Tree Amendment, would amend the Constitution of Maine to grant the people of the state a right to a clean and healthy environment and to the preservation of the natural, cultural, and healthful qualities of the environment. This groundbreaking bill would protect the environment for Maine people, recreational enthusiasts and workers who rely on Maine's natural resources to make a living.

Maine Groups Praise US Leadership at International Climate Summit

News Release by the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Maine Conservation Voters
April 22, 2021 (Augusta, Maine) — Maine environmental groups say that the two-day Leaders Summit on Climate convened today by President Joe Biden has returned the United States to a position of global leadership on climate action that will deliver real benefits to Maine people and communities.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) and Maine Conservation Voters (MCV) are also praising the Biden Administration’s announcement that it will set a new goal for the United States to achieve a 50-52% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 as part of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Climate Agreement. The groups say that the federal government’s actions on climate are critical to help Maine achieve the goals it set in a statewide Climate Action Plan released in December 2020.
