Ying Kwok on a Year of Exhibitions and the Priceless Role of a Curator

Ahead of her official appointment as Tai Kwun’s senior curator for heritage & digital, Ying Kwok takes us through a year of exhibitions, highlighting the role of a curator in shaping artists, art and the art world at large.
The prevalence of the term “curated” in contemporary culture has undoubtedly undermined the role of an art curator – these days, the word has devolved into a fancier term for “selected”. But it would be a mistake to assume that curators in an art-world context do no more than choose which paintings hang upon a wall in a show. That part is probably the easiest bit of Ying Kwok’s job.

Two years ago, Phoebe Hui visited Audemars Piguet's headquarters in Le Brassus in Vallée de Joux, nestled in the Swiss Jura Mountains.
During an evening walk in the village, she was struck by the moonlight's pronounced reflection off the snowy slopes. Inspired by her experience on that full moon night, the multidisciplinary artist began researching the celestial body after she returned to Hong Kong.
Her site-specific installation, The Moon Is Leaving Us, is the fifth Audemars Piguet Art Commission and was unveiled last Sunday at Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Artist Phoebe Hui on Moon Installation

The Audemars Piguet-commissioned artist talks to us about her robot-driven work inspired by the moon.
Every year, Swiss luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet selects a rising artist to commission under its Contemporary division. For the fifth installment of its project, the house has chosen Hong Kong-based curator Ying Kwok and artist Phoebe Hui for an installation display at the heart of the city. Titled
The Moon is Leaving Us, Hui’s work bridges art with science, using a mechanical kinetic robot to draw unique renditions of the moon. We caught up with the creative to talk about the inspirations and development process behind the technical yet surreal piece of art created in partnership with Kwok.

In these turbulent times, creativity and empathy are more necessary than ever to bridge divides and find solutions. Artnet News’s Art and Empathy Project is an ongoing investigation into how the art world can help enhance emotional intelligence, drawing insights and inspiration from creatives, thought leaders, and great works of art.

Fine watchmaking and the arts have a long parallel history. In great examples of both, craft, history, and specific absorbing details take center stage, producing strong emotional reactions in art and watch lovers alike.
The Swiss luxury watch house Audemars Piguet—one of the oldest watch companies in the world, established by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet in 1875—has for many years run an art program, Audemars Piguet Contemporary, that exists separately from its watchmaking initiative, aiming to support artists from around the world in their endeavors to investigate lived experiences of all kinds.
