Today, we add our voice to the many women, mothers, economists, academics, and early-childhood experts calling for the creation of affordable and high-quality early-learning and child-care programs throughout the country.
The pandemic has driven more than 16,000 women out of the workforce, while the male workforce has grown by 91,000. We need to make sure that the road to recovery considers the critical needs of families with young children, so that mothers can participate in the labour force with the confidence that their children are learning and receiving the care they need before they go to school.

OTTAWA — Les leaders des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis saluaient mardi la nomination de Mary Simon à titre de première gouverneure générale autochtone du Canada, se disant ravis d’avoir ainsi une belle occasion de jeter des ponts plus solides avec les allochtones.
Pita Aatami, actuel président de la société Makivik, l’organisme que Mme Simon avait dirigé dans les années 1970, a indiqué mardi qu’un frisson collectif avait été ressenti par de nombreux Inuits et Autochtones à travers tout le Canada, mardi matin, lorsque les premiers mots de la nouvelle gouverneure générale ont été prononcés dans sa langue maternelle, l’inuktitut.

"It was very touching and it was something that I knew the ancestors were holding her hands as she was doing that."
Pita Aatami, president of the Makivik Corp., which Simon led in the 1970s, echoed that feeling of excitement in hearing the traditional Inuit language being spoken and represented at the announcement of the Queen's new representative in Canada Tuesday.
"I am sure that Inuit will be celebrating across Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, Nunavut, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Alaska, Greenland and Chukotka today," Aatami said.
"Having an Indigenous person as the Crown’s representative in Canada sends a strong message to the nation, and to the international community. This comes at an important time in our history as we collectively work towards reconciliation."
