Viva Air seeks to boost regional connectivity

Viva Air is seeking to grow its footprint on regional routes in Latin America, taking share from legacy carriers that currently dominate such sectors.
Speaking at Routes Reconnected on April 26, CEO Felix Antelo told delegates that low-cost operators such as Viva are strong in domestic markets, but none have really challenged the likes of Avianca and LATAM Airlines Group on longer regional routes.
“We see an opportunity for our model to gain more share,” Antelo said. “There isn’t that much of a [ULCC] presence on regional flights. When you look at the share—apart from on routes between Mexico and the US—most of the flying is by legacy carriers.”

Decentralizing from Bogota
Viva Air is the third most important carrier by market share in Colombia. The low-cost company is behind Avianca and LATAM, the two legacy airlines it came to disrupt nine years ago.

OPINION: Startups—A risk worth taking?

David Casey is Senior Network Planning Editor at Routes, providing insight on network strategy and development across the Aviation Week Network. This includes the daily Routes Digest, Routes magazine and the Routes Aviation Podcast.
History tells us that crises spur new business models in the aviation industry, with struggling carriers making way for more ambitious and innovative players to enter the market and capture share.
Just as the state-owned Gulf airlines took traffic away from US and European legacy carriers by connecting passengers through their hubs following the 9/11 terror attacks, LCCs with the operational flexibility to offset the lower load factors with cheaper ticket prices also thrived.

Viva Air strengthens Medellin hub, Colombia-Mexico competition to intensify

Viva Air Colombia is adding three new international routes from Medellin, the second-largest city in Colombia, as part of efforts to “decentralize” flights in the country.
Viva Air president and CEO Felix Antelo said the "Hub Medellin" project would seek to make air connections from the city “just as important” as ones from capital Bogota's El Dorado International (BOG). The company’s strategy would promote tourism and contribute to the economic recovery of the region, he added.
The expansion from Medellin’s José María Córdova International (MDE) will see the ULCC launch two routes to Mexico and one to the US, increasing the number of international services from the base to five. The carrier currently only flies to Lima (LIM) and Miami (MIA) from the airport.

Geven to launch "super" economy seat for ULCCs, LCCs - Runway Girl

Italian aircraft seatmaker Geven is preparing to launch a brand new economy class seat model aimed at meeting the needs of ultra-low-cost carriers and LCCs, which are expected to rebound faster from the COVID-19 crisis.
The work is part of a broader new product development strategy at Geven spanning all cabin classes. Company owner and managing director Alberto Veneruso tells Runway Girl Network that Geven’s product line is being updated in collaboration with one of the premier design houses in aviation.
Though specific details of the new economy seat are still under wraps, Veneruso says the model – internally referred to as “Super Economy” – will be “extremely competitive in terms of cost” and will maintain Geven’s standards for weight, comfort and living space features.
