Review Says VW ID.4 Is "Anonymous-Looking," Also a Big Missed Opportunity

Up until now, North Americans could only look in envy at the Europeans who were enjoying their Volkswagen ID.3s, the all-electric hatchback from the German manufacturer that's supposed to be as pivotal for the company as the Beetle and the Golf were before it.

Along with the compact-sized electric crossover, World Car of the Year winners include the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for luxury, Porsche 911 Turbo for performance, Honda e for urban vehicles, and Land Rover Defender for design. It’s quite an impressive lineup, but then again, the Honda isn’t the most capable or affordable electric vehicle out there and the Defender is a shadow of its former self because of the woeful reliability record.
“We are particularly pleased about our ID.4 being named World Car of the Year,” said Ralf Brandstätter, chief executive officer of Volkswagen passenger cars.

Audi today unveiled its smallest and most affordable electric vehicle. It’s called the Q4 e-tron and it will, strangely, also be the brand’s longest-range electric offering.
The 2022 Q4 e-tron will arrive in Canada in the fourth quarter of this year, with a sleeker-looking Sportback version to follow early next year. The Q4 will be Audi’s third fully-electric model line on sale here, following the original e-tron SUV and the sporty e-tron GT sedan.

Volkswagen, the German automaker responsible for the Dieselgate scandal of 2015 that exposed many other wrongdoings in the automotive industry, is currently playing the eco-friendly card. The Wolfsburg-based company won’t even invest in new engines anymore, which is a very surprising turnaround from six years ago when all hell broke loose.

Dubbed the third revolution in the manufacturer’s history, the ID.3 compact hatchback isn’t available to purchase in the United States. The ID.4 compact crossover, however, is offered in America with unlimited charging at Electrify America DC fast chargers at no additional cost for the first three years.

Volkswagen ID.4 Compared to Tesla Model Y, Seems to Fall Short

Volkswagen and Tesla are two companies that rocked the American car market to its core. VW did it with the Beetle about 70 years ago, while Tesla's electric cars are responsible for making internal combustion engines look obsolete right now.

As you probably know, the ID.4 is currently launched as Volkswagen's first all-electric car in America. Like the Beetle, it's rear-engined and designed to be semi-affordable, though we wouldn't go as far as to call it cheap.
To be fair, a Tesla is out of Volkswagen's league, being way more powerful. For this review, TFL lined up their own EV, which cost about $65,000. But a Model Y Standard Range was roughly $43,200 if you could get one, while an ID.4 costs $42,000 with the destination charge.

Volkswagen currently has two models under the aegis of its ID family: the ID .3 hatchback and the ID .4 SUV.
Volkswagen's ID range of EVs will also include small 'people's car'
Some terrific news coming from Volkswagen, folks -- the German automaker has confirmed that its range of electric vehicles will also include an affordable entry-level model. In fact, the company says a small ID car is crucial to its electric pursuits as well as the efforts to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles so as to achieve both, its sales goals and emission targets. Ralf Brandstätter, chief executive officer, Volkswagen, confirmed the news recently, adding the company remains completely dedicated to adding a small electric car to its rapidly-growing ID range of EVs.

Back when the ID.3 was getting ready for its launch, Volkswagen set out on a 12,400-mile (20,000-km) journey across Germany using an ID.3 Pro S for the task. The trip started in September 2020 and ended in the early days of December, making for what probably is the longest EV drive of the model in a single country to this day. With recharging stops, of course.
The ID.3 is not available in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean the Germans can’t pull off the same stunt with the bigger ID.4. To that end, on March 13, an electric SUV will set out from New York City on a 6,000-mile (9,656-km) journey that would take it all the way to Sacramento, California over the course of 18 days.
