PHILIPSBURG: --- Minister of VSA Richard Panneflek told members of the media on Wednesday during the Council of Minister's press bring that today March 17th marks one year since Sint Maarten reported its first case of COVID-19 on the southern side of the island.
Panneflek said this time last year there were a lot of unknowns with panic and fear seeping into public sentiment.
“No one could have ever predicted how crippling COVID-19 would have been. People lost their jobs, families were separated from loved ones, parents had to learn to balance working remotely while adapting to distance learning for their children, social distancing, hand hygiene, and mask-wearing became the norm,” the Minister said.

The artist from Belarus Victoria Valuk launched her personal world art tour show "Artifact" on the eve of spring! The start took place at the end of February, despite the coronavirus, epidemic, and the borders still closed for the most part! In this extraordinary art show, her paintings are and will be hidden in different parts of the world like a treasure. Whoever finds it will be able to keep the painting for himself/herself! Each of the artworks by Victoria Valuk in her show acquires the status of an artifact and a personal number.
So, the first four artifacts were recently sealed in bottles and left in the hot Caribbean region from snowy Belarus!

St. Martin News Network - Governor Holiday pays working visit to the COVID-19 Vaccine administering Locations.

PHILIPSBURG:--- On Monday, March 15, 2021, Governor Holiday paid a working visit to the vaccine center at the White and Yellow Cross and to the vaccine center of the Sint Maarten Medical Center. Both locations started administering the second dose of vaccines to persons today.
The White and Yellow Cross and the Sint Maarten Medical Center are two of the four vaccine locations which the government commissioned since February 22, 2021, to provide vaccine to our population. The Sint Maarten Medical Center administers vaccines to staff members of the hospital, of Sint Maarten Laboratory Services, of the Cay Hill Pharmacy, of the Ambulance Service, and of the Firefighters. The White and Yellow Cross vaccination location's main focus is to provide vaccines to residents of the center, other persons over 60 years, and the staff of the center. Governor Holiday received a tour of both facilities where he spoke to nurses at the SMMC and at the White and Yellow Cross who received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

PHILIPSBURG:--- On Friday, March 12th, 2021, the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary in the Hague hosted an Election debate with Candidates of six political parties. The parties which were represented in this debate were BIJ1, represented by Ms. Lysanne Charles, UBUNTU (UCF), represented by Mr. Carlos Lopes, DENK, represented by Ms. Isaura Carillho, D66, represented by Drs. Jorien Wuite, Christen Unie, represented by Mr. Don Ceder and CDA, represented by Mr. Koos Sneek.
The purpose of this debate was not only to offer a platform for the candidates to inform the voters of the party programs and visions but more so to encourage voters hailing from the Caribbean and South American diaspora in the Netherlands to go out and vote.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Two lucky players are now celebrating their substantial wins after playing the Caribbean Lottery’s Pick 4 game recently.  Alberto Richardson, who won $40,820 in October 2020, struck gold again two Fridays ago, with a whopping win of $161, 660. 
Like any other Friday, Richardson went to the Retail Office to purchase his tickets for the daily draws. While waiting, he asked the clerk, with a smile on his face, to check his recently purchased tickets. 
With great enthusiasm, the cashier reported that Mr. Richardson was the lucky winner of a dazzling $161,660. 
“Playing with the Caribbean Lottery gives me great joy,” said the happy winner. “The games are easy and I love the fact that you can play big and win big!”

St. Martin News Network - SMMC begins second round of COVID-19 vaccinations.

CAY HILL:--- On Monday, March 15th, the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) began the second round of its COVID-19 vaccination drive. The drive, which includes staff from SMMC, the Ambulance Department, CPS, St. Maarten Laboratory Services (SLS), and Cay Hill Pharmacy, aims to vaccinate healthcare workers to reduce the risk of severe COVID-19, safeguarding and ensuring the continuity of care within the hospital and at other healthcare institutions.
SMMC began vaccinations on Monday, February 22nd, and has vaccinated approximately 480 persons to date, with more registering every day. SMMC is also proud to announce that a number of departments within the hospital, including the Medical Specialists, Emergency Room Department, and the Operating Room have a 90% or higher vaccination rate. Among the staff vaccinated, only mild side-effects were observed such as soreness at the injection site and fatigue, which typically subsided in 24 hours.

St. Martin News Network - Stay-over visitors figures show recovery is underway.

PHILIPSBURG:--- The Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau (STB) says that the number of stay-over visitors to the destination is on the increase and this is a sign that recovery of the tourism sector is underway.
In the months of November, December, and January the destination welcomed 32,669 stay-over arrivals. December is the month that recorded the highest number of stay-over arrivals, welcoming 13,488 visitors in total.
The breakdown of the arrivals of November, December, and January showcases that 55% of all arrivals were from the US, and 23% from France.
March 2021 marks one year since the country closed its borders due to the COVID-19 outbreak which later became a global pandemic.
