good evening. we begin this saturday night with those late developments out of chicago. where this evening, three young men are under arrest on the eve of a summit of world leader there. authorities say they planned to target chicago police stations with molotov cocktails to distract them so they can take aim at chicago mayor rahm emanual's home and president obama's campaign headquarters. authorities said, quote, the suspects were, quote, here to hurt people and all have been charged with multiple acts of violence and domestic terrorism. alex perez leads that off this evening. good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you. investigators say it was an undercover police officer that helped stop this plot from becoming a reality. domestic terrorists. that's how law enforcement authorities in chicago describe brian church, jared chase, and brent betterly. according to investigators the men planned to hurl molotov cocktails into four police stations, including this one, with one goal in mind, harm police officers. >> the defendant, church, at one point asked his co-defendants if they had ever seen a cop on fire. >> reporter: after distracting the police, investigators say the men then planned to launch an attack on president obama's campaign headquarters, chicago mayor rahm emanuel's home and financial institutions in the downtown area. >> this plot does not represent protest behavior. this is criminal behavior. >> reporter: investigators say an undercover police officer infiltrated the group and helped foil the plot. the trio traveled from florida to chicago to protest the nato military summit which begins tomorrow. according to court documents they amassed a small cashe of weapons for the planned attack, including, a mortar gun, swords, a hunting bow, throwing stars, knives with brass knuckles and several beer bottles filled with gasoline. the men were initially arrested in an overnight raid at a chicago apartment building wednesday. their attorneys argue the materials collected by the police were being used to brew beer, not make bombs. >> it is part of a fear campaign to deter people from getting out to protest. >> reporter: the security planning and anxiety surrounding the meeting of world leaders in chicago has been growing for months. thousands of protestors are already in town and even with the massive police presence, some are still concerned. >> it is alarming. without a doubt. it is alarming. >> reporter: now, investigators say the three men who who were arrested were self-proclaimed anarchists, part of the activist group black block. the police superintendent here, gary mccarthy, points out the majority of protests which have been going on since wednesday have been peaceful. >> alex perez heading us off. thank you. of course before the president heads to that summit a meeting of a different kind. just wrapping up at camp david. the president meeting with world leaders. on the agenda today, a delicate question for the president who looked around that room and asked this question, who was right. who picked the better route to get the global economy going again. the president pushing through a stimulus plan in america. europe pushing through austerity and deep cuts. we're seeing what's happening in the uk. sliding into another recession. our 401(k) so connected to it all. let's bring in abc's david kerley from the white house tonight. david, good evening. >> reporter: good evening. the president said he got it right. and everybody now agrees that jobs and growth must be the top priority right now. there are some new faces running the eight biggest economies in the world and a couple of them are proving to be new allies of president obama who has been asking the europeans to follow his lead. >> growth and jobs must be the top priority. we know it is possible. in part, based on our own experience here. >> reporter: the european economies have been in the doldrums, greece is in crisis, it may drop out of the euro zone. here is what the president is preaching. in the middle of the economic crisis the u.s. went one way spending on stimulus for growth. while the europeans went the other, austerity, spending cuts. now with two 2 1/2 years of growth in the u.s., albeit anemic the europeans are listening. >> the emphasis in europe has been on austerity, and i think the mood now is we need to shift it a little more towards growth. >> reporter: even the germans, who have bailed out fellow europeans, and who are strict adherence to austerity are bending. listen to the president, he didn't even use the word austerity today instead calling it fiscal consolidation. >> both growth and stability are part of an overall package all of us have to pursue. >> reporter: this is critical to all of us, europe is the biggest trading partner. the immediate problem is greece. if it goes down the domino falls on french banks that hold the debt and those french banks are insured by american banks. bad news for a president trying to keep his job. >> if that goes wrong and sends the u.s. economy into a downturn that's going to be probably the single biggest problem for him in terms of getting reelected. >> david kerley back with us from washington. the president making the case with world leaders, will have to make the case with the american voter in months ahead on the economy. in the meantime there's also late word they discussed oil. >> reporter: unprecedented move by the g-8. the white house said this is an effort to try and calm oil markets across the world. this is what they're going to do, they're going to watch the markets very closely, they may ask the international energy agency to ask countries to release strategic reserves, to try to calm those markets. more supply, what would the president do? well, he would release some of the oil. what would that do? that would lower gas prices right before an election. >> david kerley, thanks to you. the economy will be front and center. house speaker john boehner, and minority leader, nancy pelosi, both here. fireworks, and george's powerhouse political "roundtable," that's first thing in the morning on "this week." in the meantime, tonight, we're going to turn to the dramatic bus crash today in georgia. six buses carrying some 200 children collided on the way to an amusement park. instead was a chaotic scene. medics helped to help the children injured. no serious injured. steve osunsami is in atlanta tonight. >> reporter: the six school buses were filled with 200 children from it georgia heading to atlanta. this were on their way to a six flags amusement park and were almost there when the first bus slowed down because of ro construction. that's when the second hit the first causing a chain reaction crash and all six buses and one passenger car. 50 people were hurt, none of them critically, many of them children, that were sent to area hospitals to have the injuries evaluated. the most seriously injured was a 44-year-old bus driver who had to be air-lifted to an atlanta hospital. back home, parents and school administrators were frantic and sent buses to bring the uninjured children back home. for parents of any children who were supposed to be on their way to a fun afternoon, this was a frightening saturday. >> steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. our thanks to steve tonight. and to another trip that didn't go as planned. there was so much attention paid to the space mission. a brain child of a billionaire. >> reporter: the weather was good, so was the countdown, and everything else, until the last moment. >> three, two, one, zero. and liftoff -- we had a cutoff. liftoff did not occur. >> reporter: there was a half second to go when computers detected a problem and aborted the launch. it was engine number five, one of nine engines needed for liftoff. the issue was high pressure in the engine combustion chamber. spacex now needs to figure out and fix the problem. >> this is not a failure. we aborted with purpose. it would have been a failure if we lifted off with a engine malfunction. >> reporter: spacex was started by billionaire who created pay pal. this is a spice flight to see if the it can rendezvous with supplies with the space station. there are a number of companies who hope to deliver cargo and people into space. >> spacex is a long way to prove reliability and validity. it will take between five to six successful launches to develop the confidence needed in the vehicle. >> reporter: when and if the rocket does get off the ground it will carry some precious cargo. the ashes of 308 people, including the actor who played scotty on "star trek." the ashes in the capsule that will be jetty sonned into space. the next possible day for launch? next tuesday. >> lisa stark, thank you. a new chapter in the plot of the chinese dissident, who managed to scale a wall, get past chinese police. tonight he's out of china and arrived in the u.s. abc's akiko fujita, really impossible a month ago. >> reporter: chen's arrival at the airport marks the end of a tense diplomatic standoff between the u.s. and china. he and his family had hours to pack up the bags and board a flight to the u.s. a friday morning call set the wheels in motion. >> they received a phone call from the chinese government, and said to pack, and get ready to go. >> reporter: officials risked chen guangchen to the airport an hour later. waiting for him there, passports for his family and a ticket to the u.s. chen's friend spoke to him minutes before takeoff. >> well, his mood, sounds pretty upbeat and also, he's fading a little heavy in his heart for his other extended family members. >> reporter: it was a dramatic end to a diplomatic roller coaster that began with chen's daring escape from house arrest three weeks ago. in the dark of night he slipped past guards into the u.s. embassy, requesting protection days before a visit by hillary clinton. washington and beijing agreed to release chen who vowed to stay in china. but chen changed his mind, out of fear for his family's safety there. secretary clinton led the charge to bring chen to the u.s. >> the u.s. and chinese government has demonstrated more progressive maturity. handling this kind of incident. >> reporter: the self-taught lawyer has become a folk hero. an outspoken opponent of forced aboorgss, and sterilization, imprisoned and beaten over the years. now he'll begin a new chapter at new york university. while chen and his family are now here in the u.s. safely, his friend says he arrives with a heavy heart, he is concerned his family in china may now face retribution. his nephew faces already a possible death sentence and has been denied access to his
