system of some kind. >> reporter: the faa said technical and safety experts are discussing system correction, but it's the second failure in 15 months. >> this system has needed a redo for the last authorities have made an arrest in theurder of a d.c. store owner. a woman who was killed during a robbery earlier this month. rafina hernandez was killed in her store on georgia avenue in northwest washington after she gave up the money. jackie benson is in northwest d.c. with more on this. >> reporter: since news of the arrest, and there are still a few details, has spread quickly here along georgia avenue, many people knew the victim, 51-year-old rufina hernandez. she was working in her liquor store the night of november 7th, a saturday, when two men came in and announced a robbery. investigators believe mrs. hernandez was complying with the orders to hand ove the money when for some unown reason one of the robbers shot her. this area has been the scene o several new business openings in the last year. the murder of mrs. hernandez who was very popular, and very well respected has caused great concern to other business owners. >> being the business owner directly next to her, it was an issue for me with my clients and wondering if they would continue to patronize me. it was an issue, but i'm relieved that they found someone. hopefully it's the person. >> reporter: and we are told city officials planned a press conference here at the scene at 7:30 to give us additional details. back to you. >> jackie benson, thank you. feds made a major move today to take down what they describe as a notorious gang in maryland known as "the latin kings." a series of raids led to the arrest of 19 members on a variety of racketeering charges. one was at the home of 27-year-old roddy paradas jr. according to the indictment he was involved in a plan to murder a security guard, rob a prostitute and hunt down members of arrival gang. >> it was scary seeing that. they were just screaming, put your hands up in the air. >> reporter: and they took your brother away? >> they come in and took my son this morning about 5:30 a.m. so they come here, the cops and the atf and they come with about 15 guys. >> the family believes he is innocent. if convicted he and the other alleged gang members could face life in prison. some rain out there today. more coming? >> we have more. latest on the investigations into the ft. hood shootings. there were developments today at the pentagon and on capitol hill. today the first congressional hearing into the shooting got under way. one focus was the senate homeland security committee, whether warning signs about the suspected gunmen army major nidal hasan were ignored. he is charged with 13 counts of murder. military prosecutors say he opened fire on unarmed soldiers and civilians at ft. hood november 5th. today a counterterrorism expert who served under president george w. bush testified sensitivity to law-abiding muslims may have hinders investigators. >> there might have been some self-censoring, if you will f them to pursue a senior uniform military member, a doctor who was muslim. >> major hasan was shot during the incident and remains in a military hospital. in a separate development today, defense secretary robert gates announced leaders of a broad pentagon review into the shooting. former army secretary west and former navy chief vern clark will be in charge. gates says the 45-day review will look into gaps how the military identifies service members who might be a threat to others. it will also look at personnel and medical programs, and how well u.s. bases are able to respond to mass casualty incidents. president obama has just returned back to washington. he spent the last eight days on his first official tour to asia. that trip took the president to japan, singare and china. his last stop was in seoul, korea. there the president and south korean president showed unity in their approach of disarping north korea. president obama issued a warning about iran's latest rejection of international records to halt its nuclear program. the president is threateni new sanctions. >> our expectation is that over the next several weeks, we will be developing a package of potential steps we could take that will indicate our seriousness to iran. >> the president ended his trip the way it began with a quick visit to american troops in alaska. as he left asia, white house aides appear to be on the defense about whether the trip was a success. senior advisor david axelrod said in his words, we did not come halfway across the world for ticker tape parades. he added the trip was geared toward laying a foundation for progress. an ambitious promise from afghan president hamid karzai during his inauguration. he was sworn in today for his second five-year term. kaai pledged to fight corruption and take control of his country's security before his term ends. karzai's goals will not be easy to achieve. he faces doubts over the legitimacy of his presidency after a tainted election, and increasingly deadly attacks by the taliban. more mixed messages today regarding the new mammogram guidelines issued earlier this week. they state most women under the age of 50 don't need mammograms. three days after that news came out many women are wondering if they will save them lives or cause well campaign will use social media posters at airports and border crossings, television and radio ads to advise people not only to stay home if they're sick, but to wash hands often, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and get a flu shot if in a high-risk group. >> we are up to 51.9 million doses of h1n1 vaccine that are available for the states to order. >> reporter: still not enough for everyone, but health officials promise more vaccine is on the way and the flu season could last until may. the cdc reports that flu-related hospitalizations and deaths are extremely high nationwide "uss bainbridge" pulled back into port this morning. captain phillips and the crew of the maersk alabama were captured by pirate off somalia. captain phillips volunteered himself as a hostage allowing little area of low pressure. there is a southern branch that will be picking up a bit more moisture to our uth. that area of low pressure will be rapidly moving to our north as we go through the nighttime hours. here are the delays right now. around washington. still delays up around new york city because those are the areas getting the rain now. also some of this low visibility, low ceiling beginning to lift. thunderstorms, did you hear the thunder earlier today? the last batch moving up out of baltimore. moving in toward philadelphia for what's left of the rain around us, it's more like a light drizzle. some lighter rain, even a few pockets of moderate rain. lower eastern shore, things pretty much drying out there. as you can see if this area we still have a few more hours when you want the umbrella handy. some of the heavier rains moved well up to our north. that should be about the end of it. look at roanoke. over 1.5 inches of rain today. 13 inches for the month. a lot of spots the ground has been saturated. front royal well over an inch of rain. those are the folks around warrenton, manassas, you hear the rumble of thunder and hay market also with 1/2 inch of rain. there is the last of that batch moving off. as we get rid of that low pressure, here is a friendly high pressure area coming in. with northsterly winds, it will be a pleasant day tomorrow. breezy side with those northwesterly winds. as we get in toward the latter part of the weekend, another little area of low pressure coming our way from the south. nothing like last week's storm. i think we'll end with some rain late sunday and on into monday. most all the weekend looks great. lingering showers, drizzle, some of that fog still around. as we get through midnight and especially the early morning hours, winds turn into the northwest. clearing, cool, dry air comes in. temperatures in the morning will be around 50 degrees, which i'll well above average for our average overnight low which is now tonight. she has been arrested on charges of drunk driving. charlene lugar was charged after police say she crashed into a parked car if a neighborhood in mclean, virginia. mrs. lugar is the wife of republican senator dick lugar of indiana. julie carey has our report. >> reporter: a shattered side view mirror in the grass outside churchill road elementary school. fairfax county police say a vehicle driven by senator richard lugar' wife charlene side-swiped a parked car around 6:00 p.m. after lugar struck the parked car she lost control of her vehicle and ran up here on the sidewalk. you can see the tread marks in the grass. they say she backed up and sped off down churchill road. about a milew away near their home police stopped the car. >> police observed front end damage and smoke emanating from it. he performed a traffic spot and subsequent investigation led to the arrest of charlene lugar for driving while intox kated, as well as additional charge for hit-and-run. >> reporter: when charlene lugar was taken to the far faction county detention center, her breathalyzer registered a 0.11. records reveal she w driving a buick suv bearing the indiana license plate number 1. senator richard lugar issued a statement reading thankfully no one was injured. we are deeply sorry and embarrassed this accident occurred. parents at churchill road elementary say it's lucky no one was hurt. the school was holng a back fair and many parents and kids were walking to the event. >> to hear it was a drunk driver that came through here, how does that strike you? >> that's a shame. there are a lot of kids around. that's scary. >> reporter: news4 reached charlene lugar by phone but she did not wish to discuss the incident. julie carey, news4. an 18-year-old was killed in a car crash in fairfax county this morning at about 2:00 a.m. on old courthouse road in vienna. police have identified the man killed as alexander mcclellan of clifton, virginia. he was driving the car. two passengers were taken to the hospital. one is 19 years old, the other 20. both are expected to be okay. investigators don't know what caused the crash, but they are looking into the weather and leaves in the roadway. a rollover crash put three teenagers in the hospital. fire officials say their mini ran rolled over the at the internext of quarter horse drive and fletcher town road in glendale 2:00 this afternoon. crews had to use the jaws of life to free the teens. a 17-year-old boy suffered serious injuries that are believed to be life-threatening. the others a 19-year-old male and 14-year-old girl with serious injuries. there is no word what caused the crash. a high school teacher in montgomery county is facing charges of armed robbery tonight. his name is brendan friedman. he is a biology teacher at clarksburg high school. police say he held up a pharmacy and bank at gun point in bethesda. christ gordon has our report. >> reporter: the principal of clarksburg high school sent home a note saying the arrest of science teacher brendan friedman on armed robbery charges is shocking to the entire community. >> i'm concerned. i have two children of my own. a school teacher is a position of trust. this is definitely wrong. he should never be teaching again. >> reporter: police say a gunman entered the safeway in bethesda last friday afternoon wearing a blue surgical mask and handed the pharmacist a note saying you have 30 seconds to give me xanax and oxycontin or a bull goes in your head. 90 minutes later a man entered the m&t bank and handed a note to the teller that said you have seconds to give me all her 100 dollar bills. police arrested 41-year-old brendan friedman who taught at clarksburg high school since 2005. he is being held here at the montgomery county detention center since his arrest last friday when he was driving a 2006 corvette down georgia avenue. he asked the arresting officer, how did you catch me? >> at the time it's my understanding we did locate items in his vehicle inhe safeway pharmacy he was able to obtain oxycontin and xanax. we were able to find those items. he did have a replica type of gun. we were able to locate those items when we made the arrest. >> reporter: lawyer barry helfin is representing mr. friedman. >> the entire bottom line will be why? the real answer will be, i think he is addicted to drugs, has some psychiatric issues that will have to be addressed. he is the perfect candidate for the drug dorothy in montgomery county. >> i think he knew what he was doing. he should be punished for doing wrong and needs help to get past this. >> reporter: christ gordon, news4, montgomery county. >> if friedman is convicted, he could face a possible sentence up to 20 years in prison on each count. the state department is investigating allegations that the cameroon ambassador to the u.s. was involved in a scuffle. people were demonstrating outside the embassy. the protest was allegations the proor was cheating people in cameroon out of money. they say he attacked one of the protest leaders and a woman recording the event on her camcorder. >> he comes running out and pushed the girl with the camcorder. picked the camcorder on the ground and starts assaulting her. then police arrived. >> who was good night? >> the ambassador. >> how do you know it was the ambassador in. >> you could tl by his actions. >> the cameroon embassy has not released an official statement. in less than a half hour, fairfax county will hold a public forum on a controversial policy concerning deer hunting. in an attempt to curb the deer population, the county is allowing a two-month bow hunt in the park stream valley. ny residents say it's unsafe. residents can speak out tonight beginning he didn't remember that. it's been a long season for rock and the redskins. >> so much for the luck of the irish. one of the worst calls ever cost ireland a spot in the world cup. it was france and ireland. the call late in the the game. henri right there, number 12. watch him touch the ball here, not once, but twice. guides the ball down to his foot. that is the game-winning goal. people are going crazy. you get a good look right here. they don't have instant replay in soccer. the worst part is henri admitted after the game, it was a hand ball. >> if the ref doesn't call it, i get to keep playing. >> so france is going to world cup. ireland is not. they are outraged. nothing they can do. >> understandably. >> maybe replay will come into effect there like football. >> after that maybe it should. >> thank you, dan. coming up, a new study looks at how much fat is in movie theater popcorn. >> convenience store clerk's mi some of us think munching on a big tub of popcorn is one of the best things about gointo the movies. crist yen dahlgren has details. >> reporr: at your local movie theater, the latest blockbuster isn't the only big thing. you may be busting your seams if you hit the concession stand. >> they don't call them tubs for nothing. a tub of popcorn is about 1,000 calories. >> reporter: t center for science and public interest recently checked out the fat and calorie content of the nation's three largest ththter chains. what they found -- >> regal and amc the two largest chains are popping in the worst possible oil, coconut oil. it's 90% saturated. lard is 40% saturated. the third largest chain is popping in a heart-healthy oil. they are using nonhydrogenated canola oil. that doesn't mean it's good for you. >> reporter: large popcorns were between 910 and 1,200 calories before that buttery topping. a large soda could add 500 calories. with theaters stocking oversize candy, some of these could add 300 and 1,0 calories. cinemark and regal said in statements, they offer healthier alternatives, but the snack options are driven by patron demands. national association of theater owners agreed, pointing out many theaters tried to change to air-popped popcorn after a similar report 15 years ago. movie-goers, quote, made their voices heard and wanted the traditional popcorn back. kristen dahlgren, news4. nutrition experts say there aren't any healthy alternatives to theater snacks. they suggest sharing that tub of popcorn or candy bar with two or three people. tonight at 11:00, we are following a developing story out of california where students surrounded a building where the board of regents approved a 32% tuition increase for state schools. the regents are trapped inside. nbc confirmed that oprah winfrey will be ending her talk show. we'll have details and the story of a woman who hid her life savings on the grounds of a maryland church so the virgin mary could keep the money safe while she went out of town. a lottery mistake turned out to be a lucky for a store clerk and her customer. amber johnson is the clerk at galleys indian fields market in bridgeton, new jersey. monday she sold a pack of tickets to a customer. after he left, johnson realized her mistake. she was about to run after him he were boss said, let him go. pain it was meant to be. an hour later the regular customer was back. he was carrying the scratch off ticket worth $100,000. the store gets a $2,500 bonus from the new jersey lottery for selling a winning ticket. so johnson's boss says, he's going to let this mistake slide. the customer did not even realize there was a mix-up until johnson told him. he says he is going to give her $1,000 of his winnings. it's a win-win-win. everybody's happy. >> glad she is getting a little piece of the action. >> as it should be. that is our broadcast for now.
