we're live on the mall, back to you. derrick ward, thank you so much. the relentless flooding is responsible for another death. the body of a 25-year-old man was found yesterday after being swept away by the ferocious floodwaters. salvadore was trying to walk across a bridge when the creek suddenly rose up and swept him away. meanwhile, a subdivision in vienna is mourning the death of 12-year-old jack donaldson. he was swept away from floodwaters while playing with friends in piney branch creek. this is video where the susquehanna river is more than 32 feet, a 15 year high. the damage estimates are now in the millions of dollars. businesses and houses on main street run der water. over in prince georges county, dozens of people have been rescued. several streets and buildings remain closed. and there is no word if the county courthouse and administration buildings will reopen monday. the floodwaters have caused plenty of damage, not just to home, but car, as well. a retaining wall collapsed early thursday morning crushing the six cars parked in front of it. it was already weakened by the overflowing waters of the tiger river. luckily no one was injured, but residents were worried local buildings would collapse, as well. the county's chief building inspector says they appear to be stable. now, a lot of local sports organizations, a lot of kids soccer teams have already canceled their games for today. they don't want to tear up the field. >> everything is completely dredged across the area, whether a football field or hillside, creeks and streams all rain swollen. more rain than i can remember in a long time. more than seven inches at national airport. for the month of september that's more than double what we would normally get for the entire month. but look at that, blue skies out there on a saturday morning. a few fair weather clouds drifting by, but nothing all that serious. the morning fog is burning away as temperatures climb out of the 60s and into the 70s in many spots. 72 degrees in arrest link top, 72 for leesburg and fairfax, 68 in german town, 72 in frederick. there is not much in the way of rainfall on the radar. most of the rain we've bean sen seeing has moved away. for some reason my clicker is not working. but the forecast for today, partly sunny, nice and mild. there is the radar. nothing coming down on radar at this point in time. so that is welcome news. and there is our day planner. highs today, low to mid-80s. there is a chance 30% chance that we might get a quick shower late this afternoon. a 0% tomorrow. but most of your weekend will be rain free and the important services tomorrow morning look dry. >> chuck, thanks so much. while things are bad in our area, it's even worse in places like central pennsylvania. the keystone state seemingly got the worst of it where the susquehanna crested at almost 43 feet and damaged 350 homes in just one borough. in some places, the only way to get from house to house was by boat. locals shot down the option of installing levees a few years ago. a decision coming back to haunt them. >> they wanted to see the view of the river. now they got it. and it's all in their homes. >> so far in pennsylvania, two people have been killed by the floodwaters. all emergency crews have been going house to house to try to rescue anyone who needs help. people are once again being forced to leave their homes as one of the more than 190 wildfires in texas has flared back up. it's been burning since monday and has scorched more than 12,000 acres. more than 1700 homes have been destroyed by the fires. most of them by the largest fire near bastrop, texas. but firefighters are starting to get a grip on the blaze now 30% contained. they've started using converted jet liners to battle the fires around the state. congress has agreed to a deal that will avoid the shut down of the faa. it will stepped the budget through the end of january 2012. lawmakers say republicans agreed to not include spending cuts in the bill and this is the first step in hopefully agreeing to a long term deal. earlier this year, the faa was partially shut down merely 4,000 workers were furloughed. and airport consuctrtion proper corrects were put on hold. it appears american troops will be staying in afghanistan for the foreseeable future. a senior afghan official predicts the two two countries will soon sign a deal allowing the tous use t u.s. to use it for counterterrorism missions. right now the agreement to use of a began bases runs through 2014. u.s. officials say any agreement will respect afghan's sovereignty and right now there are no plans for any permanent american bases in the country. president obama delivered one his most passionate speeches to date thursday night in the hopes of reversing the tide of unemployment. and when lawmakers return monday, they'll get their first opportunity to consider how to handle his proposal of tax cuts and revenue sharing. steve handels has more. >> reporter: it was president obama who wanted a joint session of congress to make a big deal of his urgent jobs proposal. >> it will provide a jolt to an economy that has stalled. and give companies confidence that if they invest and if they hire, there will be customers for their products and services. you should pass this jobs plan right away. >> reporter: to please republicans, there is a big payroll tax cut. 50%, $240 billion, for small businesses and workers. states would get $85 billion. >> and lead to new jobs for construction workers, for teachers, for veterans, for first responders, young people. >> reporter: federal funds to rebuild roads, rehire police, firefighters, and teachers. and to modernize schools. >> this is america. every child deserves a great school. >> reporter: republican leaders did not say no. >> we believe in small business tax relief to create middle class jobs. in all that, i believe that there is some common ground. we can set aside the kinds of things that we disagree on, come together on the commonalty. >> reporter: democrats saw the passionate obama many had missed. >> the next election is 14 months away. and the people who sent us here, the people who hired us to work for them, they don't have the luxury of waiting 14 months. this plan is the right thing to do right now. you should pass a story about in some kids who commemorate the anniversary of the attacks very differently. it's their birthday. >> and we really struggled with a way to explain to kids what 9/11 was about. this way clearly going to be exposed to it. more than 13,000 children were born on september 11th, 2001. we gathered six of them from the washington area. here they are pictured at the first responding arlington fire station. and they had -- they understand completely it's a very bitter sweet feeling for them, sharing their birthday with a day of national tragedy. we also have a story this sunday's kids post to just slain to kids what exactly happened on september 11th. and we really hope that this will be an opportunity for parents to sit with their kids and talk about the events of that day in a way that's appropriate for them. it's all over the news. it's been very moving. but needs to be sort of age appropriate and we've tried to do that in a special way. >> an important conversation to have. and you also highlight a book that you think is important. >> this is a wonderful book. it's called "we are america" by walter dean myers and his son christopher did the i also va illustrations for it. it's a picture book, but not a baby book. what it talks about is some of the challenges that the united states has overcome, including september 11th. and it paints a portrait of countries immediate radar site. the heavier rain from yesterday is moving out of central pennsylvania. it if you're going up to the penn state/alabama game, a rerif showers there. today's forecast, temperatures mid-70s this morning, mid-80s later on this afternoon and there is a 30% chance of a few showers around today, but certainly not that big of a deal. keeping an eye on tropical storm maria still expected to become a hurricane. but just like what had happened to katia, it does look like the storm will turn and stay off the east coast in the united states. that is welcome news. we do not need anymore in the way of tropical moisture. there's a little weather front just to our north. that's where the showers have been focused. it will slide down to the south today, might spark off one or two showers around our area. as it sort of comes in. and then eventually it will turn around and go back to the north. but we will have chance for a shower today and tomorrow. but nothing like we've seen. warm and humid, on on the whole is good day. temperatures today up into the low 80s. here is your extended forecast. 84 today, 83 tomorrow. and again a little better chance tomorrow afternoon, but all three including a 12-year-old boy. >> residents are also dealing with the severe damage to their homes. darcy spencer has the story. >> reporter: 25-year-old was the third victim to die after being swept away by floodwater in northern virginia. officials say he was attempting to walk across this bridge on telegraph road when the creek rose up. his body discovered friday morning on this air field. and 12-year-old jack donaldson died when a neighborhood creek swelled in vienna. a friend told news 4 how it happened. we're not showing his face because of his age. >> he must have taken a step and fallen down. so it was all the way up to his shoulders. >> he ran over to tell his mom and i kept running down the street looking for him, but we couldn't find him. >> right now they're in the process of tearing everything down to the sheet rock. >> reporter: the flooding was deadly and damaging. well into the night, residents are cleaning out their flooded basements on fenwick drive. >> it would be up to our necks. >> reporter: this home video shows how water gushed in who homes. >> i could hear the water pouring in as if like i had a fountain in my house. then like that's when i knew it's time to call it quits. >> reporter: and firefighters floated this man's 2-year-old daughter to safety in a container. >> nice the way they did it. i appreciate the way they handled that. >> reporter: the question many residents are asking, are these damages going to be covered by insurance? there are many different types of insurance. i'm told that residents need to get with their chief lanier says preparations for a potential attack on the 9/11 anniversary have been underway for months. those warnings come as towns around the country prepare to honor those who lost their lives starting to shut down the streets today around ground zero and of course authorities are still look manage to these reports of a possible threat, either there in washington or here in new york. a credible but unconfirmed threat is still out there as president obama and other dignitaries prepare to visit ground zero tomorrow. the tip came from a source who has been reliable before. >> we've been running every single thread to ground, this is the first credible piece of information we've gotten. >> reporter: the threat is keeping new york police busy, there were nearly twice as many reports of suspicious cars friday, three times as many suspicious packages. police with assault rifles and bulletproof vests swarmed penn station and stopped traffic during rush hour. >> as long as it keeps people safe. >> reporter: washington is on alert, too. president bush and defense secretary panetta lay a wreath at the pentagon this morning. >> we will continue to show the world the enduring strength of the american character. >> reporter: this afternoon presidents bush and clinton join vice president biden to dedicate the flight 93 memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania. honoring 40 courageous passengers, heros who stood up to and defeated al qaeda. >> they knew they were giving their lives. they knew they were not going to come out alive. >> what those people gave up for us and for this country means a lot. >> reporter: even more now ten years later. >> reporter: president obama has declared this a national day of remembrance and service tomorrow and he'll be right here at the "l.a. times" reports that the massive power outage cost san diego as much as $118 million. that takes into account lost productivity and also the cost of food that spoiled from the outage. officials say the blackout which affected upwards of 6 million people was caused when a technician made a mistake while repairing a high voltage line in arizona. a classic piece of art in argentina has been damaged twice first by vandals and then by workers trying to clean it off. an original of the thinker was vandalized covering in pink spray paint, but the damage was compounded when workers used a powerful washer to remove the graffiti. the statue is now covered in water marks and art experts are worried that the internal structure is damaged. you'd think workers cleaning off a statue
