It’s a statement that will be put to the test over the course of the show’s five episodes as Halston (né Roy Halston Frowick) was the most elusive of men, despite his fame. The best description I’ve read of the designer comes from the pen of editor Patricia Bosworth, who found Halston’s “compelling presence” to be “openly sensual but at the same time remote.” Also telling is journalist Angela Taylor’s realization that the designer (who was born in Iowa and grew up in Indiana) was “as starstruck as any teenager eating popcorn at the Bijou movie in a Middle Western town.” What is generally overlooked is that Halston was as in awe of the technical talent of Charles James and the quiet luxury of Mainbocher, both American couturiers, as he was of jetsetters like Elizabeth Taylor and Bianca Jagger.
