where the royal romance first began. to the town where kate met her prince. and silk, satin, pearls, and lace. we re all waiting to find out what the wedding dress will look like. we have a couple of ideas just ahead. woe begin in libya where nato is ramping up the campaign. explosions in tripoli overnight. now for the first time, armed u.s. drones are being used. the aircraft flies lower than man s jets making it easier to spot targets. nato is sending out this warning to libyans stay well away from muammar gadhafi s military sites which are being singled out for attack. meanwhile, somber scenes of the rebel strong hold, benghazi. the rescue ship evacuated 1,004 workers from the city of misrata including the bodies of two photo journalists killed there own wednesday. the eastern city of benghazi is where it began. john mccain is on an unannounced visit there for talks with the opposition. he s been a firm supporter on u.s. military action to overthrow colonel gadhafi. more now from our correspondent in tripoli, fred. fred? good morning. that s why he received a hero s welcome when he touched down there in benghazi earlier today. mccain was received by some of the leadership of the transitional national council which is the leadership of the rebels. he s going to hold meetings with them today. we expect him to hold press conference later. it s the main square in benghazi where he was also received by many people, almost received a hero s welcome there by many people in benghazi. he s been a firm supporter of military action against muammar gadhafi of the united states ramping up the support for the rebels. that s certainly something that is reflected and is being reflected in his visit there right now. when asked by one reporter what he thought of it, he said they re my heroes and that seems to that appears to mutual pictures we re seeing from benghazi. we now know that nato is ramping up the military officials there over the skies of libya using the unmanned drone. but the big concern is civilian casualties that could get caught in the cross fire. nato says how they re going to be trying to avoid civilian casualties? well, the unmanned drone certainly are one of the ways that they re going to try to avoid the the civilian casualties. one of the things we know about the competitors used in iraq and afghanistan, these are weapons that are very precise. fired slowly and fired precise missiles. they observed what s going on there. that s one of the problems for nato so far. they re not sure whether they re hitting muammar gadhafi in misrata, gadhafi trying to hide under [ inaudible ] all over the using civilian vehicles certainly you could observe these targets or potential targets for an extended period of time, see if they re firing at civilians, you re more likely to take a more precise shot. thank you very much for that. we do apologize for the sound quality there. normal life is impossible for the people of the city of mis misrata. battles are raging for week. 27 people have died there just this week alone. and caught in the middle are some of the youngest victims of the war. john irvine reports. reporter: he s 10 months old. thanks to the mortar shell, his time on earth was almost up. but he is lucky. unacceptable. reporter: this man is on life support and so is his city. the intensive care unit here is treating some of the defenders of misrata. fighters shot in the head by gadhafi snipers. the doctors are utterly exhausted. not only are they having to treat horrendous injuries, they re having to try to save the lives of the people they know. last week i lost at least five people i know them very well. reporter: most of the fighting in misrata has occurred in the area around the city s main thoroughfare, tripoli street. these men were enjoying a relative lull following a successful attack that saw their pro gadhafi adversaries give up some ground. it s quite clear that the fighting here has been fierce. but the rebels believe it s been worth it. when we were here a week ago, this particular street was in the hands of the pro gadhafi forces. it s not any more. this area around tripoli street is in the hands of rebels. tripoli street is misrat a s jugular vein. this tree killed a child. another boy was badly injured. indeed as he was carried away, none of us imagined he would live. but he s very much alive but still in shock, terrified by explosions and gunshots, the side track to life here. after i stop hearing the mortars and the bombardments, the injury starts to hurt again. right. because he remembers what happened? i remember the events once again. his parents would get him away from here. but they ve nowhere else to go. john irvine, i trk b news, misrata, libya. a libyan woman who claims she was gang raped by colonel gadha gadhafi s forces says her life is unbearable. she burst into a hotel used by foreign reporters in tripoli late last month before she was hustled away. she tried to tell them about being abused by members of the security. but now she says the government is doing all it can to intimidate her. i usually get harassed when i have to show my identification card to government officials somewhere. and they find out who i am and that i put complaints forward against gadhafi s people. they humiliate me to the point where other people gather around and start saying it s shameful to treat a libyan woman that way. it s the same thing every day. she says she s made very little legal progress in her case. and she hasn t been able to go back to her home. you re watching world one live from london. outrage in south africa, a police beating is caught on tape. and officers are in custody, a story that shocked a nation and brought back wealth of memories. syria prepares for big protests despite processions by the president. me neither. it s beneful incredibites. made with wholesome grains, real beef, even carrots and peas. you love the smaller-size, easy-to-chew kibbles, and i love the carbohydrates for energy and protein for muscles. whoa! wait for me! ha-ha. you only think you re getting spoiled. you can get something like that from a kinder egg. to some it s just a chocolate shell with a nice toy inside. but not to u.s. customs and border protection. to them, this is an egg that is fraught with peril. they re actually calling it an egg with a nonnutr ishs-foot it them. i liked getting the toy out of it. they re banning it. it s made americans want the eggs even more. they re on the websites, and all of the on-line farms dedicated to getting a kinder surprise. they re calling it, what is this? he doesn t have a launcher? the missile itself won t allow him to fire at ground targets. matt and other annual i wases say one key reason for the dysfunction, the rebels can t seem to fig your out who the commander is. in some cases, they said gadhafi s former interior minister is leading them. but they pointed to a former colonel hero who defected to the u.s. and came back to fight. the competition between them is causing a great deal of difficulty and so it s not clear basically who is in charge. if that continues, you re going see divided, ineffective leadership with no sense of direction. analysts say that s already translated to untrained, undisciplined fragmented army that doesn t communicate on the battle front. there s evidence that the rebels tolerated the soldiers in their rankles. analysts say it s not wide spread. but at one point, a cnn team encountered mohammed carrying an ak-47. he was trained by his uncle and his mother was okay with him fighting. could the allies see the support of the rebels come back to bite them? the president said neighboring chad have taken many of the surface-to-aramis sills which al qaeda used to target aircraft in the past, but there s no evidence that al qaeda has those weapons and officials tell cnn there s no indication that stock piles have fallen into al qaeda s hands. still, the officials said the u.s. can t rule out the arms in the war have been obtained by extremists. brian todd, cnn, washington. u.s. drones are now being used by nato in libya. the unmanned aircraft is supposed to be more accurate than just the standard jets. will they mark a turning point in the war? let s speak to michael cutler, he s the director of military sciences at the think tank, russi. thank you for being with us. are these drones going to make the difference? can nato win? well, in terms of the right capability given the restriction on nato s contribution to the rebel campaign. they were by the u.n. resolution and have troops on the ground. when you re in an urban operation, the use of unmanned vehicles makes a great deal of sense, incredibly dangerous environment for all participants. and wout troops on the ground, drones allow a lot more deliberate action than using manned aircraft or other sorts of missiles. is gadhafi outmaneuvering? i wouldn t say he s outmaneuvering nato. what we ve reached is not a stalemate because grassroots is volatile and the position of the rebels. gadhafi is certainly in the position to outmaneuver the rebels. i believe we just heard the lack of organization and the lack of training and everything else. what about humanitarian intervention. so terrible, thousands and thousands of people are fleeing. are we going to have boots on the ground to intervene on a humanitarian basis. pose which raises a lot of questions to who can participate in it. not very much in bosnia operation. putting european troops on the ground very specifically to protect humanitarian aid and everything else. a huge range of problems, particularly the major problems are in urban areas. so forces that are not there first and foremost conduct comb combat. they have to do that test on some people. the uk, france, and italy have sent military advisors on the ground to advise the rebels. do you think that s going to be a factor then in any way. is it going to change the game on the ground for the rebels? this sort of stuff takes time, right? it does, it does. it s very clear that this is not a training mission. because that could reach the breach the u.n. resolution. it s quite subtle, perhaps, but it s developing some capability to call together all military elements they actually have in a more systematic way to try and force the rebel operation to make some sense. michael kodner with the think tank, russi. thanks so much. the state department is looking at the fact that they shelled civilians in the war with the tamil rebels. parts of the damning report have been leaked to the media. here s richard ross. the conclusion of the u.n. panel of inquiry painted a devastated picture of the final days of the sri lankan military offensive against the long-time opponent tamil tigers several years ago. some of which has been linked to the sri lankan newspaper points fingers at many sides, primarily, the government of sri lan lanka. according to some of the conclusions, the military there shelled hospitals, no fire zones, u.n. facilities, and stopped the deliveries of yue m humanitarian assistance. hundreds of thousands of civilians were caught in the conflict between the military forces of the government and the tamil tigers in the final days. also accused are the tamil tigers for harming citizens in the cross fire. according to the leaked documents, ban ki-moon set up an independent international mechanism to carry out a much deeper investigation to what happened. the united nations is not releasing the report so far, delaying several deadlines for issuing the report to the press, saying it would still like sri lanka to comment in the final report. it remains our intention to pibb lish the reports in sri lanka in full and wout aem. it s our intention to release it as soon as possible and we would like to publish it simultaneously with the response by the sri lankan government. as of right now, we re still trying to ascertain what they re willing to avail themselves of this offer. the sri lankan government has denounced the report as fundamentally flawed. there were major demonstrations in front of the u.n. offices in sri lanka when the inquiry was announced. the secretary general himself comes in for major criticism in how the united nations handled itself in the final days and whether it gave preference to the sri lankan government as the casualty count mounted. i want to give you background on the civil war in sri lanka dating back to 1972 when the liberation tigers formed and fought to carve out a separate tamil home land. in 1983, fighting between the rebel group and sri lankan groupse groups escalated to an all-out war. there the was additional attacks and violent escalated again in 2006. the sri lankan government pulled out of the cease-fire in february of 2009 stepping up the campaign against the rebels. then in may of 2009, the sri lankan military advanced deep to tamil tiger territory and defeated the tigers. this is world one live from london. no one but kate middleton s friends and family know what it looks like. so how has her wedding dress managed to influence some of the world s top designers?
