FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren December 23, 2014

black lives matter. >> two new york city police officers assassinated while just doing their job. tonight "on the record" is coming to you from the national law enforcement officers' emotional in washington, d.c. where there are more than 20 now, names of officers killed in the line of duty etched on this wall. and "on the record" has live team coverage of the officers assassinated in new york. griff jenkins and ted williams in brooklyn. we begin with the look how saturday's horrific and ugly murders unfolded. griff and ted report from brooklyn. >> it was on this corner that officer ramos and officer lowe setting in a new york police car was assassinated. >> officers rafael ramos killed on deuteronomy by princely a crazed gunman on a mission to kill cops. 2:45 a.m. saturday he finds his targets. >> an assassin who saw people on the street said watch me on social media and watch what i'm about to do. >> on instagram, the killer potatoesing this picture of a gun -- posting pictures. they took one of ours, we will take two of those. 2:4:47 p.m. he strikes. >> it was at that time that the assassin walked up to this marked police car, stuck a gun in the passenger side, shot officer ramos and officer liu in the head. >> shocking people nearby. >> my employees were here. they heard the gun shooting. >> francesca run as pizzeria in this brooklyn, neighborhood. one of her employees witnessing the chaos. ran back inside. she was shaking. very afraid, very upset. very scary basically. >> the suspect takes off running, racing down myrtle avenue and heading right into this new york city subway station. >> we're at the subway station here. according to sources, the assassin ran down these steps after having shot two police officers and there were witnesses running after him. >> police on the trail of the killer followed him so the subway. >> i spoke to sources here last night that told me that the assassin, as he entered this area, they observed him, he was fidgety, he looked like he was very nervous. >> minutes later breaking brinst an end to the chase. >> shocking the community to its core. >> did you ever lastly think in your wildest dreams that something like this could happen literally on your doorstep? >> no. i would have never thought of that, never. >> now former homicide detective ted williams who is tracking the investigation in brooklyn. of course you saw ted in that video. ted, as a former police officer, is there any way to describe the grief of the new york city police department tonight? no greta, no way to describe it the closest you can come to it is for our viewers to think about one of their closest family members having died because this is what is going on in this town. this town is in shock, greta, and it's in morning mourning not an officer black or white but a brother, to brothers that were in blue when you look over my shoulder here, greta, you see this makeshift memorial. and it is at this memorial that throughout the day that men and women from the police department as well as citizens in this city have come to pay respect to two of new york heroes, officer .eneral wenjian lieu and >> there are more than 20,000 names etched on this wall behind me of officers who have fallen in the line of duty. and i suppose what makes this doubling homicide, execution, assassination on n. new york on saturday is so horrific. they are all horrific. the fact that they are just sitting in their squad car it wasn't like an arrest that went backed. it wasn't like they were chasing bank robbers. it wasn't like anything. they are sitting in a squad car and somebody came up on them and shot them in the head. >> greta, this was an assassination. this was an execution. these two officers, these two heroes did not know what hit them. this guy told two citizens on the street "watch what i'm about to do." and at that stage he went up like a coward and he shot and he assassinated two of the finest police officers in the city of new york this is such a strategy. that memorial in short period of time will have two more names on it. >> former police officers talked to you pretty freely. what are they saying tonight about the mayor about how he has handled this? >> well, greta, the police officers that i have spoken to, while they are upset about some of the things that the mayor has done, they have now said hey, look, we will deal with the mayor in the future. our objective right now is to lay our two brethren to rest. and they want to give the respect that is due to their brethren right now. so they have kind of taken the mayor out of the picture and now they are focused on bringing home and going home and taking home two of new york's finest. officer rafael ramos and officer wenjian lieu. >> ted, if you will stand by, we will check back with you in a second and also check back with griff jenkins. griff is getting new information by the minute. right now across the nation, the execution of two new york city police officers in broad daylight raising fears of antipolice violence. we have seen it growing for weeks now and getting sense since grand juries refused to indict them in the death of michael brown and eric garner] chanting] what do would want? dead cops. >> when do we want it? now. >> former congressman allen west joins us. good evening, sir. i know that nobody wants to, quote, blame anybody but you have got to look at what the root cause of this is to try to figure out how to stop it and to prevent it from happening again. where did this antipolice sentiment? i mean, what's behind all of this? the most important thing to understand leaders establish climate on atmosphere across the nation. and when you have people such as the president such as the attorney general eric holder and mayor bill de blasio and look at. so things is that have been said and go back to the skip gates incident which the police in cambridge acted stupidly, those are the words of the president why do we believe police need retraining or reorganization and reforming? that is some of the words that come from eric holder and then also mayor de blasio who came in going after the stop and frisk program and saying that he feels for his son. he feels that his son is threatened by the police those are the type of climates and atmosphere created. you remember after the grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri, it was within two hours that the president took to the stage to give his assessment. where is the president now? he should be talking to these protesters and saying this will not be tolerated in the united states of america. we have a rule of law. we have to have respect and regard for our police officers. we have to honor our system and our due process. >> you know, you mentioned the gates thing. professor gates back at harvard. that was six months into president obama's first administration. and i know a lot of police officers are very unhappy with the president because he said as you noted said the police acted stupidly and added he didn't know all the facts which suggests he took sides. if he hadn't said i don't know all the facts we might have thought differently. many police officers thought that he took sides at that point that says the tone. when he has been speaking in terms of ferguson and in terms of eric garner he has said things to try to put a lid on the tension. but has he been unsuccessful in i mean, is it growing? >> yeah, he has been completely unsuccessful. as ank holder and mayor de blasio. mayor de blasio should have not allowed these protests to get out of hand as you have seen and attacks on police officers. what you are really witnessing is individuals that are allowing their political ideology and their philosophy to shape their policies under their perception of what they believe social justice will be. no one has ever talked about the fateful decisions that michael brown made to attack a store owner to rob a store to it assault and attack a police officer. that's what we need to be having the discussion on. we need to be having the discussion about if the police come up to arrest you, you should comply with the police. mr. garner did not do that fatefulfully, those two individuals lost their lives because they didn't have that respect and regard for police and for authority now, the president supported lebron james when he came out wearing -- in support of eric garner, i think it was i can't breathe or something. made a statement that he thought that was good that athletes spoke out o. and you mentioned the president speaking. should the president speak now and if so what should he say? >> the president has to speak now. and i would hope that a lot of these entertainers, we know their little video that samuel l. jackson put out. the t-shirts and hoodies that we see. the st. louis rams players that came out with the hands up, don't shoot sim which we know is a false narrative. they need to stand up with the men and women of the thin blue line and let them know they are with them. they are every day guardians. every day warriors that protect us. the president needs to reassert that. the attorney general needs to reassert that as the top law enforcement officer in the united states of america. and mayor de blasio needs to come back and retract some of those statements that he has made and stand with those police or else they will continue to turn their backs on him. >> congressman, thank you sir. >> thank you, greta. >> griff jenkins joins us live from brooklyn where he spoke to the police murders, griff? >> hi greta wear here obviously at the memorial. we were speaking earlier with the woman who asked not to be identified. she watched from the window as the scene unfolded. just above the memorial. she was looking out the window with her small children horrific scene as the assassination in the attempts to save the lives of officer liu and ramos ring out. >> i heard the shots. i went to check. so then i saw out of my living room window i saw the glass was shattered so then i went into the bathroom and then i saw them in the car and then i saw the officers on the radio and after that the ambulance came and then i saw the e.m.s. doing the cpr and carrying them away. it's an image i'm trying to get rid of. i don't want to give it to somebody else. it just goes to how raw things are in the community. there is some tension folks coming to pay their respects. the mayor and police officer speaking out today calling for protests to be put aside as well as the public's help in identifying what may have been a two hour gap between noon and 2:00 p.m. between brinsley's whereabouts in this community. >> turning backs on bill de blasio as he walked into the hospital after the shooting after the execution on saturday. long standing tensions between the mayor and police erupting as the mayor and the city's largest police union blamed mayor de blasio for the tragedy. >> we tried to warn it must not go on. it cannot be tolerated. that blood on the hands starts on the steps of city hall in the office of the mayor. >> and reverend michael faulkner joins us. good evening, sir. and your thoughts about the police officers turning their back on mayor as he walked into the hospital on saturday? what do you think about that? >> i think it was -- i don't agree that they should have done it, but they have the right to protest as well. clearly there is a divide between our mayor and our police officers but most importantly our community right now needs to rally around our police department. we in our church on sunday we prayed for them and then a group of our men went over to the local police station and we told the police officers exactly how we felt and we expressed our condolences for the loss of their two heros that were slain in the line of duty. we expressed our continued support for them and for the job be that they do. and that's what i think all responsible new yorkers need to be doing right now. >> you know, it's hard in looking at this, reverend, in trying to sort of dissect. this the killer was a man with a long history of crimes. is he a career criminal. someone from law reports was mentally disturbed so a very troubled man. on the other hand, he posted things on instagram which showed he was blib brat. he had a plan. he had an intention and it stems from something that is, you know, has been in the news for the last six months. you know, so it's hard -- it's just an act of a crazed person or is this part of a deliberate attack on police officers in this country? >> i think it's a the act of a depraved person who used an unfortunate situation, a divide between the community and the police as a back drop for his, you know, meltdown. and it unfortunate because i don't think the two things are related. i will be honest with with you, i have talked to people in the community. and as angry as they were, the last thing that we want to see happen in our city is to see it open season on our police officers. these are the people who defend us, who protect us. when something happens in this city, you call 911, and you want to see nypd, you want to see new york's finest show up and you want to see them be professional. and all new yorkers share that same passion. and these individuals talking about dead cops and so forth. they do not represent the majority of the people in the city of new york. >> what do you think about the mayor? >> the mayor is unfortunately he is having a bad week. is he having a bad time and so is our city because is he having a bad time, at the press conference today was visibly shaken and upset. it's very disappointing because right now we need moral leadership. we need leadership to bring us together. we need leadership to bring unity and unfortunately right now our mayor, the mayor de blasio is not doing that right now. i pray for him. i pray for our city. because we desperately need to be brought it together in unity, not in protest. we need to be brought together in unity around the things that we all value thank you for joining us. >> always a pleasure. thank you. >> 13-year-old son of rafael ramos posting a message on facebook. jordan ramos writes today i had to say goodbye to my father. he was there for me every day of my life. he was the best father that i could ask for. horrible that someone gets shot dead just for being a police officer. everyone says they hate cops. but they are the people that they call for help. i will always lo you and i will never forget you. rest in peace, dad. and today "on the record" is also learning the suspect in this case posted a screen graph from a popular app. to instagram a navigational app. that uses data from quliewfers using it to avoid speed traps. it appears this cop killer might have been using it to track down cops. as s. an app. like this just asking for trouble? joining us our legal panel katie fang in miami and ted williams in new york. katie, this app. is now part of the story. at least he had it and was looking at it i don't know if it was in any way what directed him to these cops but what do you think about this app.? >> well, greta, we know that he wasn't driving a car. we know that he took a bus from maryland to new in order to assassinate these particular police officers. now, were these the actual officers that were located via the app. waives in no. we do not know that for sure. we do know he was communicating with other people using this app. this app. is typically used to be able to figure out traffic patterns accidents, how to avoid them and figure out if there is law enforcement nearby not for purposes of what he used it for but maybe to find help. >> ted, today's the mayor said suspend protests until after the funeral. obviously you can't step on people's first amendment right to peacefully protest. but, your thoughts about him asking for that? >> well, greta, i'm happy and encouraged that the mayor would ask for that because, as you know, greta, there has been quite a few protests even here in the city of new york. you did a show last week where we he had some hip hop artist calling for the death of police officers. and other protesters saying that the best kind of police officers were dead police officers. i'm hoping that at the will >> look, the mayor has been accused of taking sides, certainly. the politics aren't wild about him. that's what i'm reading all the time. that's what people are saying and that they think -- he turned their back on him. people come out showing support for the police. that's a protest. maybe the american people understand we appreciate what the police officers do. why in the world would you put a lid on that? why would you even wait for that if the people want to speak favorably to these police officers? stand up for the new york police? >> well, i don't think that he is -- i think he is really talking about the protest of the eric garner case more than anything else. but not trying to defend the mayor. >> i didn't hear him say that at all. i listened for that, ted. >> well, i didn't hear him say it either. but i'm hoping that that's what he meant. because, right now, greta, this city needs to be about one thing. and one thing only. and that is showing respect to two slain police heroes. and making sure that they're buried in an appropriate manner. >> totally agree. there should be peaceful protests. ted and katie i have got to go. thanks for joining us. just hours after the execution of these new york city police officer, a florida officer also gunned down in the line of duty. we're going to talk with the florida sheriff as we continue our breaking coverage of the deadly violence against police officers. also ahead, dangerous winter weather, we are tracking the storms. in fact, we are in the middle of one. your first alert forecast coming up. deal... until your insurance company jacks up your rates. you freak out. what good is having insurance if you get punished for using it? >> well, it was an officer from the police department responded about 2:00 in the morning to a noise complaint in an apartment complex. got there, got out of his patrol car. saw a female sitting in the car with a wild stereo. at that point the suspect, this cop killer, walked away from the apartment complex back toward the car. saw the officer and just unloaded his gun at him. fired seven rowntsdz from a 40 call bar handgun. shot the officer in the chest above his bullet-resistant vest. the officer dropped to the ground. he then threw the girl out of the car. threw it in reverse. and sped away from the scene and when he sped away driving forward. he ran over the officer's body as he laid dying in the street. he then went down the road. another officer saw him. a pursuit. he wrecked the car. foot chase and he was taken into custody. that's the short version of what happened what a tragedy there the new
