state and it s not over yet. and out of control. a widening crisis in the gulf of mexico as that massive oil spill creeps closer to shore. now new fears about just how far it might spread as president obama travels to the region for a first hand look, today sunday, may 2, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television from nbc news, this is today with lester holt and jenna wolfe. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to a special split decision. i m lester holt reporting from venice, louisiana. i m jenna wolfe instead studio 1a. we have a lot to get to including the president s trip to the gulf later today. we ll begin with breaking news from times square. jenna, we ve been following this story all night after police found a crude, but potentially powerful bomb, in an tuf parked in the middle of the district after a street vendor alerted police to billowing smoke from the back of the vehicle. the police moved in and immediately cleared the streets of thousands of tourists so they could dismantle it. inside the car police found propane tanks, gasoline containers, clocks with batteries and electrical wires. in a press conference, new york s mayor confirmed that the vehicle did contain an explosive device. let me say that we are very lucky thanks to alert new yorkers and professional police officers, we avoided what could have been a very deadly event. we want to begin with jonathan dienst. police commissioner ray kell said inside the suv, three propane tank, two five gallon gasoline containers, two clocks with batteries and a metal box resembling a gun locker. what are authorities making of this and do they have any idea and why? they believe it was a detonator with timing devices inside and for some reason it did not go off. a crude device, but it could have been a very powerful explosion. as for these devices, the propane tank, the force of them. think about what you put under your grill in a barbecue. if three of those were to explode all at once with glass and shrapnel from inside, the damage in times square packed with people going to the theater and going to restaurants. the casualties could have been significant. clearly a concern and now there s a massive man hunt in new york. detectives from the nypd, the fbi, they have a terrorism task force up and running and they re scouring the streets for clues and sneefdz any warning that would happen? not at all. a street vendor alerts a mounted officer says the car is smoking and the mounted officer notices the metal devices and he begins clearing the area and calling in for backup. for a while it s a car fire and we ll just look at this as a precaution, but as the bomb squad kept getting a better look at this, they knew there was something very serious inside that vehicle. you mentioned since there are no arrests there is a large-scale man hunt under way. how are officials keeping residents safe knowing that there s someone out there? they re ramping up patrols across the city, but the key is the man hunt and some of the evidence that you are asking me about before. they have a videotape of the car coming to the scene, but as of now we are told despite the cameras in the times square area they don t have an image of the suspect and despite all of the people who are out there, there s no one who stepped out saying i saw someone get out of that dark green nissan. weil be canvassing, looking for clues. this as they pore over the evidence and the propane tanks. who bought those? who bought the gasoline? where did that car come from and there was a fake license plate taken from a junkyard. they have teams being set up and those various teams are out tracking down any and every lead. a lot of questions. jonathan dienst, thank you so much. now let s send it over to lester. president obama reacted to the bomb threat commending the nypd for its quick action saying the federal government is prepared to support in any way it can. nbc s correspondent pete williams is following the federal investigation from washington. the governor of new york called this an act of terrorism, how strong were those words and what role is the federal government playing in the investigation? an act of terror sichl what it is when you put a car bomb in a public area, that seems to be what it was. i talked this morning to homeland security secretary janet napolitano here in the washington bureau for meet the press which will be seen today on nbc and federal officials believe it s an act of terrorism, too, and officials are beginning to exploit the car for forensic evidence including fingerprints, she says. lester, it is not entirely clear yet what exactly this thing and how it was supposed to work. the popping that people heard were fireworks inside the car, but whether these clocks and wires we heard about were collected to a detonator or not, whether this was a working bomb from the way it was constructed still isn t clear this morning, but lester, the department of homeland security is taking what is known and sending out a bull thain to local law enforcement officials throughout the country telling them what happened here just in case somebody is planning to do this in other cities, but as of this morning secretary napolitano says there s no indication that there have been any other attempts like this anywhere else in new york city or anywhere else in the country, lester. certainly leads to the question whether this is a homegrown domestic type attack or international route. it probably doesn t matter given the fact it would kill any way, but is there a sense as to where this might have come from? not at all issue the construction of the bomb would indicate who really didn t know, fortunately, what they were doing, but that didn t seem that it was inspired by al qaeda or planned by al qaeda although it showed some planning. officials have not been able to find a vehicle identification number and didn t find them in their early looking at the car. who was was responsible here tried to obliterate them and took a license plate from a junkyard so there was some planning here. nbc s pete williams this morning. pete, thanks very much. let s go back inside the studio with jenna with more. roger cressey joins us on the phone with more. based on this list of explosive materials can you tell us about the person or group that may be responsible for this. well, jenna, when you look at attempted terrorism by al qaeda or a real organized crew, a lot of it is peroxide-based explosives and there s a level of complication to that that you didn t see here. this is also consistent to what we saw in london in 2007 when there were two attempted car bombs that were not detonated, that included gas canisters and propane. so this could be an individual with no affiliations, as pete said, who was inspired by what he saw who used the internet to identify how to do this and as pete said quite rightly, until nypd does the forensics analysis to determine whether this could have gone off, we have to be careful about who might be responsible and what the political meaning might be. if you ve been to new york city, you know times square on a saturday night is incredibly busy. police will have to go through hours and hours of surveillance video. can you give us an idea of what they ll be looking for? having walked through times square yesterday i can appreciate first hand this challenge. what nypd has done, better than any other city in the country, is created a series of integrated camera feeds both in the city and the private sector and in the lower manhattan area, they have an integrated private, public sector video feed and they use that to do the analysis and you ll see a similar process here in midtown. they ll be talking to businesses to see what was on their cameras. they ll be doing the interviews of individuals and try to paint a picture of where this car came from, who the individual and was that becomes a key component of the investigation to determine the origins of this attempted attack. roger cressey, thank you for your time. thousands of tourists were cleared from the streets of times square for ten hours while the bomb was dismantled and the streets have now reopened. nbc s michelle franzen is there. what s the latest? reporter: certainly the crossroads of the world has reopened. we have pedestrians coming out to times square and tandem bikes. a big change from what happened overnight. you can see most of the roads have reopened with the exception of 45th street and in between 7th and 8th near the marriott hotel. that is where the nissan was parked. just a few hours ago police removed the nissan, loading it on to another flatbed truck and taking it to another location to pore over the evidence there. meanwhile, back here at times square, as you mentioned, one of the high profile and busiest areas and that combined with poring over hotel cameras and hoping that some witnesses might come forward with information that they didn t know they had last night and it could give police something else to go on, jenna? michelle franzen reporting for us from times square. thank you. now here s lester. all right, jen narcs thanks. now to the other big story that brings us to the louisiana coast. it s the growing threat of the entire gulf coast from the huge oil leak. president obama arrives in the region later today. nbc s mark potter joins us from port jackson, louisiana. mark, good morning. reporter: good morning to you, lester, strong winds have come straight to louisiana bringing the oil in this direction and it is happening with no let up. officials say those winds will clock around and change direction, but then other states could also be threatened. the weather conditions now are horrible for louisiana. all day saturday southeast winds blew steadily and more than 20 miles an hour, gusting to more than 30. gulf coast waters were so rough efforts to skim oil from the surface were shut down. these oil company contractors were among the few venturing out to place oil barriers around the slick. they too were slowed by the rough conditions. the diagram shows the expanding oil slick moving toward southern louisiana, its land fall in wetlands here and beaches in other states seem ine vit believable. think we need to prepare that it will come ashore and wield like it to not happen at all, but it s likely to contact shore in louisiana, mississippi and alabama at some point. reporter: much of the louisiana fishing industry has ground to a halt after the state shut down some of the shrimping, and oil harvesting east of the mississippi river because of the oil slick. our industry right now is shut down and it may be a real long-term effect. we don t know for how long. how are you folks doing today? at morton s seafood restaurant in madisonville, louisiana, where the kitchen is still busy preparing shrimp and oysters there are more worries. i m very concerned. i think the supply will be in short supply. if we can eat them, we will. who knows when we ll get them again. reporter: throughout the gulf it s a widespread fear as strong winds continue to push oil to shore. reporter: so far engineers have been able to cap that well below the surface and u.s. officials say doing that is their number one priority as that huge oil slick continues to grow. lester? mark potter this morning, thanks very much. the obama administration is being gujed on its handle of this unfolding disaster. that factors into the president s decision to visit the gulf region later today. we are joined by david gregory, moderator of meet the press. good morning. before i get to the president s visit i do want to talk about how he learned about the car bombing attempt in times square. i know he was attending the white house correspondents dinner last night. a pretty unusual circumstance, the president of the united states and the mayor of new york stay at this huge white house correspondents dinner and they both learned in the course of the dinner as the president was briefed about how it was being dealt with and of course, even before the evening was over mayor bloomberg was gone and flew back up to new york. as you know, he had an early morning press conference there. i m wondering, given the recent subway bombing plot that was uncovered and now this. if the president will find himself in a position of needing to reassure americans in some way? oh, i think absolutely. you ll hear from secretary of homeland security indicating that this certainly looks to be an act of terror. whether it was part of a wider plot is not knowable at the moment and it s a focus of the investigation. this was described as an amateurish device. nevertheless, placement, timing, and the potential scale of this is the kind of thing that everybody worries about and again, an unforeseen event that any president has to deal with and respond to as a reminder of how dangerous things are and what can happen. and let me turn now to the events going on here long the gulf coast. only a few days ago the white house was saying president obama would not be visiting this region right away and didn t want to distract from the operations here. now fast forward. he s coming at some point later today. are they mindful of the public relations disaster that president obama experienced during katrina? [sigh] ah. the efficient life is the good life. good morning. we are off to a fairly quiet start. we had a few sprinkles this morning. most of that has dissipated. it is warm and muggy already. 74 at the airport. all the dewpoint are running in the mid 60 s. it will use then that juice to create thunderstorms. after 4:00, some of those storms could be strong or severe. the high temperatures around 90. we will come close to a record of 89. showers and thunderstorms possible tonight. muggy with a low near 70 in most areas. we will keep that chance for rain going on monday. scattered showers and storms. chicago up by wednesday it should clear up by wednesday. we re back on this sunday morning, theday second day of may 2010. a beautiful day in the big apple and we want to thank everyone for coming out and spending part of their morning with us. so excited this morning. i m jenna wolfe, lester holt is in venice, louisiana site of the oil spill. good morning to you. another windy day here and it doesn t bode well for the containment operation and continues to drive the oil toward shore. we can tell you that president obama will tour this region later today. the coast guard conceded on saturday that it s nearly impossible to know how much oil has gushed since that april 20th rig explosion. right now at least at least 1.6 million gallons of oil have leaked out. that s equivalent to two and a half olympic sized swimming pools and that s an estimate. we ll talk to a key executive of bp about the government response. on a much lighter note, it s become one of the hottest shows on bravo, the real housewives of new jersey, and some of them are here, carolyn, jacqueline and teresa join us. i am so excited about them being here i can t even get the whole sentence out. they re joining us and if the new season is anything like the old season, it is going to be a lot of fun. lester, you watched it, right? you came in every week telling me all about it. yeah. watched it every day, you got me busted. think, jenna, i was supposed to be in washington last night for the white house correspondents dinner and duty called here and got to miss the froms as the comedian in chief. nbc s willy gies was there and he was front in sxerhe ll give the weather channel s mike side cell live in tennessee with the latest. good morning to you, mike. good morning, jenna. avy rain and a levy breach f sent the water into the town, nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated a evacuated and not only from the navy base up the road, but you can see these highways and these neighborhoods are under water. as much as five feet of water. there were 200 water rescues in this area. over a foot of rain doused tennessee and this led to more water rescues. take a look at this. in nashville, a young girl is helped out of a vehicle as the water rises around her. it wasn t just the locals that had to deal with the floods. two major interstates were shut down on saturday around nashville issue leading to huge backups. it was one after another moved over to the same area ahead of the stalled front and this morning, jenna, more flash flood warnings across mississippi, tennessee and kentucky and even a tornado watch for some of the same spot. back to you. mike seidel, thank you. janice huff is back with a check of your local forecast and weather. hi, janice. hi, jenna, how are you? it was starting to pick up, and obviously got it all over the boat. reporter: we asked peter to takes out to the gulf to take a look for ourselves to see how it extends. shrimp boats remain at their docks. it wasn t long before we discovered first hand why the weather has made the job of securing the spill even harder. we re still a good 20 miles from the gulf itself from the mississippi river and we ve encountered four-foot swells and you can imagine what it s like in the gulf. to give you an idea of how rough it might be like, we spotted the deep water vessel, the kind involved. right now they re just at anchor here in the river. there are plenty of locals we ll eager to head into the troubled waters. fill it out and hand it in when you leave. reporter: among them, fishermen, their livelihoods, and they assist in the cleanup. crabber jimmy mellows says it s about self-preservation. my living s made right there. so you have to put effort to help do something. reporter: others, however, left angry, calling bp s offer a raw deal. you re damn right i am. you re not? i mean, they destroyed our whole environment down here, you know? reporter: and your livelihood? period. reporter: sailing through the waterways you still see the scars of hurricane katrina and nowa an already fragile coastline is threatened once again. the amount of land that we lost and the more that our coastline has just been, you know, frayed, and that s our protection. reporter: last year, bp, the company operating that oil rig, told the federal government it was capable of handling a wor worst-case scenario at the site. for bp s perspective, we are joined by the company s coo of exploration and production. we appreciate you being here this morning. can you update us now on the prognosis for getting this well kept? what we re focussed in on is stopping float and we ve been working on this since day one. the work on the blowout preventer continues. if that were to be successful it could be today, but we ve been saying that for a while. the worst it could be is a relief well in two to three months and i can report the progress on the containment system which we re forecasting to be complete in eight to ten days. containment system. i know some of that involved those booms out there. when we were on the water as we showed it was very rough and we re told the booms weren t really able to do their job. can you tell us how the weather is affecting this operation? yes, but i should clarify, what i was talking about is the dome system people discuss about the sea bed, but you re exactly right. the weather is very, very hard right now to contain the spill offshore. we are able to use dispersements, but we re not able to use our skimmers right now. it had been well reported that there was a 2009 planning document for this rig, in which your company said that an accident leading to an oil spill like this was unlikely or vefrp ailly impossible. clearly, that wasn t the case, but given that does that mean there was not a plan in place to deal with something of this magnitude? well, there is a plan in place and of course, you referred to it and it sits inside the national plan and the regional plan and we re executing that and what we re all doing right now is challenging that. the government ourselves and making sure we can ramp it up as big as it has to be and we ve been offered resources by the government both the state and federal to do that. i can tell you right now, you can feel it and this is about the people right now. this is their lively hood and it s their place and how to connect to them. i can tell you we trained over 1,000 people yesterday to help with the cleanup. s and about livelihood. i ve spoken to a number of people who make their living on this water and they re very concerned about what they don t know is going to happen. what is bp prepared to do in terms of compensation mindful that it could extend into the billions. well, we re going to meet our obligations. we ve said that since the beginning. we ll meet the responsibilities we have here. we want to actually help right now so we have a claims process that people can file, and we can address those now. we also want to pay the people who are going to help clean this up, and we want to actually connect into even better than we have so far with the local communities and the parrish presidents to find the best way to do that. as we noted, though, as the oil continues to gush and flow, we ve heard so many estimates and speculation by experts. what is bp s worst case scenario for this flow? [ chuckles ] welcome back. president obama took a little time off last night from the serious work of being president to work the room. nbc s peter alexander has the highlights from the annual white house correspondents dinner. it s the glitziest of washington s ashe a-list, d.c. s premiere evening event where politicians and journalist intercept with pop stars and celebrities with the president as comedian in chief. thank you. reporter: though he took a moment to mention the crisis in the gulf. the incredible struggles of our fellow americans in the gulf coast. president obama once again impressed with his wit. i wasn t sure they should actually come tonight. biden talked me into it and he said, mr. president, this is no ordinary dinner. this is a big [ bleep ] meal. the jonas brothers are here. sasha and malia are huge fans, but boys, don t get any ideas. i have two words for you. predator drones. the only person whose ratings fell more than mine last year is here tonight. good to see you, jay. he didn t spare one of the famous facie in the room. the president has the most diverse staff in history. they represent every warrant in chicago and that s fantastic, mr. president. reporter: the so-called oscars on the potomac bringing a dose of glamour and laughs to the nation s capital. for today, peter alexander, nbc news, washington. and one of those lucky enough to have a seat at last night s gala was our very own willy gies, host of msnbc s morning joe. how did it go? reporter: it was, lester. it was quite an experience, i have to tell you. the room itself, 3,000 people just to set the scene for people, in this washington hilton. you walk in there and the washington types and the hollywood types hobnobbing with each other whether it s kim kardashian talking to madeleine albright or general james jones mixing it up with scarlett johanss johansson. it s not people you d see together in any other situation, but i have to say it was pretty remarkable and we had a great table. nbc invited alec baldwin among other people. it was a great night acres long night and a great night. it is always the best people watching, i know. and then, of course, there are the after-parties that go on that we don t see a lot about. what were the highlights of the night for you? well, i was lucky enough to be seated next to bradley cooper. a lot of people know him from the hangover, a great guy and very politically involved. nbc had a big party, a star-studded party and you know, it was just interesting to see how engaged the hollywood types as they re known were in the world of politics. bradley cooper was as star struck as the people in the room as the people who were talking to him. when you sit next to bradley cooper you tend to have a lot of new friends coming up dying to talk to you. so a lot of people wanted to get to bradley cooper. so you got to look cool for the night. for one night only. tell me how the president did as a comedian. he was great, lester. whether you re a republican or democrat, the consensus that was he did a terrific job. there s a bit of an adversary relationship, the press corps has complained a little bit about the lack of access to the president lately, but for last night, anyway, everybody laughing and having a good time? frankly, lester, it was a tough act to follow. jay leno had great moments, but the president s comedy is very dry and he s got a good delivery and went after everyone equally, whether it was fox news, nbc any everybody in between. he got an a grade i would say was the overall rating. and i can t let you go without of course, knowing that at some point near the end of the dinner everyone found out about this car bombing thing in new york. reporter: yeah. that was starting to filter through the crowd or it was after everyone left? it s interesting, lester, nobody knew anything and i don t think the president knew when he went up to make his remarks and i was walking up to the room right behind new york police commissioner ray kelly and there was not a terrible sense of urgency there, so i got the sense that no one really knew what was going on until a few minutes after we d all left the ballroom and a huge story taking place while we were all sitting there sort of chuckling. willy gies, good to see you. duty called down here in the gulf and we ll catch you back in new york. lester, thanks. and up next, aye the real house wives of new jersey live, but for the these messages. bravo s hit reality show real housewives of new jersey is back for their second season and after the first season, the ladies of the garden state left us wanting more drama. pay attention, please. obviously, there has to be something else. stripping, prostitution, [ bleep ]. you were engaged 19 times you [ bleep ]. [ bleep ]. and we re joined by three of the housewives. i m so enthralled already just from that clip. carolyn manzo, and two of the guys were missing. dina is at the kentucky derby, danielle is not here. can you give us insight into why she wasn t here. it s my understanding, generally we re all invited to do the same press. sometimes they scatter us about. we have no issue with doing anything with danielle. it was by her choice to not be here. i know trees a you mentioned this week that you said that danielle felt threatened by you ladies for some reason. can you tell us why? apparently, because she doesn t want to do anything with us. we did a people photo shoot last week and we had to do it separate. because she was threatened by you. she feels she has to bring bodyguards. she claims she fears for her safety and she comes to our town and has coffee right where we have coffee by herself on a daily basis. enough talking about the prostitution and play in front of the cameras. but she has no reason to fear you? next question. we fear her. so last season ends and there was obviously a lot of drama and there were table throwing. all our tables are glued down so you re good to go. i like you. i do. i like you, too. can you give us insight into what we can expect for the second season? people are wondering if there will be as much drama as there was in the first season? did you watch the trailer? you have to watch the trailer? caroline, will there be as much drama? of course, there is a drama, but there is a different element. we have a lot of happy moments. you will laugh, cry, and get angry. i didn t think we could top last year. i ve been told we have. i hope so. i run really fast. i run really fast. are there authorities in back of you or you just run really fast? just wondering. authorities do come. there s a lot of humor. my life is threatened. scam well? there s a lot of humor this season. i think that you ll see a lot of family and a lot of fun. a lot of lucille ball and ethel. for the two of you, i want to congratulate you, both of you recently had children. i know for you it was a little difficult, jacqueline. so congratulations. how is your son nicholas doing? he s good. he s 10 months now. he s adorable and we re having so much fun. you look great. you have no nanny. do i have a book coming out. skinny italian on may 4th and i had a baby girl as everybody knows and she s 7 1/2 months old. will that be incorporated in the second season? yes. i actually give birth on the show. that will be good drama. your first season was the highest housewives first season of any of the housewives. what do you credit some of that success to, carolyn? i don t know. teresa argues with me, nobody s going to watch this. we re so boring. to us we re so normal. i don t get it. teresa says we re not boring, but i m grateful. i think it s wonderful, but i still am trying to grasp it. i don t understand. we crack each other up and i m glad the rest of the world sees that now. the rest of the world has also seen new jersey in a more interesting light. you had the those guys at jersey shore, i don t remember the name right now because we re on live television and what is it about the state of new jersey that s become such a popular hotbed for all these shows. i always say new jerseyians dare to be themselves and we re not pc and we put it out there and we re characters to some extent. we re very brazen, strong people, but we re not ashamed to be ourselves. the good, the bad and the ugly. we made a deal when we signed on for this that we were going to be as real as possible. if we re going to do it, we ll put everything out there. can you give me one little nugget about what s coming up this season?
