did the prosecution do enough to prove their case? we ll get into that in a little while. also, at one point or another, most women have told their husband to stop horseplaying with the children. that can be what your children need to grow up to be confident adults. we ll explain that coming up. if you drop them, that s not good. let s begin with the check of the top stories with natalie at the news desk. good morning. good morning, everyone. as one city is rejoicing, another city is mourning. for the first time in nearly four decades the boston bruins brought home the stanley cup shutting out the vancouver canucks in game seven. looting and rioting rocked the streets of vancouver where angry fans set fires, flipped cars. hospital officials say at least four people were stabbed in the violence. police unleashed teargas and pepper spray on the mob for the first time since the stanley cup riots in 1994. that was also after the canucks lost back then to the rangers. more than a month after the death of osama bin laden, the terror network has named a successor. formerly al qaeda s second in command ayman al zawahari is now the chief. he was born in egypt and comes from an upper middle class family of professors and doctors. president obama is defending the legality of the u.s. operation in libya as a group of ten congressman fileded suit against him, calling action there unconstitutional. the white house sent a report to congress arguing that intervention in libya does not violate the water powers act, even as the operation approaches the 90-day deadline this sunday for action without congressional approval. a predawn nato air strike this morning targeted the area near moammar gadhafi s compound in tripoli. the waters in iowa are reaching a levee. river levels dipped slightly following several other intentional breaches the water is again on the rise today. now let s head to wall street where the financial crisis in greece has investors skittish this morning. melissa francis is at the new york stock exchange. good morning. good morning, natalie. investors are watching the violent protests in greece and they are watching the prime minister there scramble to try and make a deal. all of that is making a greek default seem more likely. what does that mean? if you don t pay back your debt, you can t borrow more money. that means a run on the greek banks. as a result, we are seeing a sell-off in euros, stocks and oil as well. and we are learning american banks have tens of billions in exposure. it all feels like lehman again. we are worried it could spill into neighboring countries like spain. we ll be watching the situation closely. back to you. we ll be checking in throughout the day. thanks, melissa francis. nasa conducted a fuelling test on the space shuttle atlantis in preparation for the final flight of of the program. there were concerns that a possible hydrogen fuel leak could delay the july 8th lift-off date, but engineers isolated the problem. they say the issue can be repaired without delaying the launch. it s 7:05. back to matt and ann. thanks, natalie. so far al has been in anchorage, las vegas and handoouston, texa. this morning he s in birmingham, alabama, for his lend a hand tour. to start the day, there could be a light rain showers and sprinkles in a few neighborhoods. later this afternoon, a better chance for a couple thunderstorms. thunderstorms. in more from birmingham, alabama, coming up in the next half hour. ann? thank you, al. now to the big step in the recovery of congresswoman gabrielle giffords. she s home this morning for the first time since she was shot in the head in january. thanh truong has details on this from houston this morning. good morning. reporter: good morning to you. doctors say gabrielle giffords s cognitive ability and physical strength have improved to the point she no longer has to be a full-time patient. she will receive care but on an outpatient basis. she s been released to her husband and family which they have all been waiting on since that horrible day in january. reporter: mark kelly and gabrielle giffords were seen coming and going. a neighbor captured the emotions of so many. i think it s a miracle. it s really just been very happy that she s come this far and that she s at this point. reporter: already this week new photos were released showing gabrielle giffords smiling. in a phone interview her communications director described the homecoming for gabby. fantastic. she was elated, happy to be able to go to mark s home and be with her family every evening. reporter: of course, it was january 8th when the congresswoman was shot in tucson leaving six people dead and 13 injured, including giffords who clung to life after a gunshot to the head. with her husband by her side, the nation has followed giffords progress every step of the way. gabby opened her eyes for the first time. [ cheers and applause ] gabby opened her eyes for the first time. reporter: then, her first word. she was having oatmeal and yogurt for breakfast. she asked me for toast. she sounded great. reporter: soon, she was able to have a conversation with her husband. she s speaking a lot. at some level they are asking her to slow down a little bit. reporter: giffords continued to work. eight hours a day in rehab, determined to be at her husband s final shuttle launch. she s more than medically ready to be here. she s excited about making the trip. reporter: in april, she not only made it to florida, but she did it on her own two feet. her progress continues to surprise everyone around her. it s amazing to think this woman was shot at point blank range in the head less than six months ago. reporter: doctors warn gabby s recovery is far from over. when anyone has a traumatic brain injury like this people want to know, when will i get better? how long will it take? what will it look like? an the reality is no one really knows. it s important to recognize that while everyone is excited for her discharge, this doesn t mean it s all over. it means that we have turned a new chapter in her life. reporter: a new chapter that gabby and her family are happy to begin at home. as an outpatient, giffords therapy won t change. she has a lot of work to do on her speech and motor skills but at the end of the day she ll be with her family and friends say it means everything to the congresswoman. thank you so much. here s matt. with each passing day the pressure builds on congressman anthony weiner to resign. the latest call from one of the women he apparently had an online relationship with. luke russert is on capitol hill with details on this. good morning. reporter: good morning, matt. other women involved in the anthony weiner scandal reported more sexually explicit exchanges on the internet. a former porn star took to the cameras yesterday and said anthony weiner asked her to lie about the online relationship. i did not sext anthony weiner. reporter: even while weiner remained out of sight one recipient of lewd messages stepped before cameras to say the congressman asked her to lie about the relationship. former porn star ginger lee. i put out a three sentence communication. i didn t want to say anything further. i refused to lie so i went silent and into hiding. reporter: on the same day his wife returned from a trip with hillary clinton, lee said they quickly escalated their talk from politics to racier topics. i didn t send photos to him or receive any from him. any time he took our communications in a sexual direction i did not reciprocate. reporter: lee said she exchanged 100 e-mails with weiner. her attorney read one of them. i have wardrobe demands, too. i need to highlight my package. reporter: lee volunteered to assist the house ethics committee in their investigation of weiner. she stands ready to cooperate with that investigation if she is asked to do so. if called to testify, she will testify truthfully. and she will provide all of her communications to and from the congressman to the committee. i think that anthony weiner should resign because he lied to the public and to the press for more than a week. reporter: in congress, democratic leaders continue the call for weiner to step down. the right thing for anthony weiner to do for the country and for himself and his family is to resign. reporter: while most of his caucus wants him gone he still has a few friends. it was painful, emotional to be very honest with you. i m not going to mince words here. i wish the best for him and his family. he ll have to make that decision. congressman weiner has two options. stay and risk being ostracized, lose his committee assignments and probably lose his district in redistricting, or go quietly. reporter: weiner s office had no response to the latest developments. just when democrats want the story to go away, it surely won t today. nancy pelosi will hold her e first press conference since the story broke and weiner is expected to be a topic of discussion. thanks, luke. chuck todd, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. just when you thought the pressure couldn t get more intense it s growing and i understand democratic leaders will be having a meeting to think of new ways to pressure anthony weiner to resign. why not just let him decide? reporter: at this point they feel he s become a distraction. the fact that he s a new york congressman means it s not as if there is a small press corps in new york city. they know it s not something that s going to fade away. if this were a member of congress from iowa, indiana or north dakota. so at this point in an odd way i talked to one aide to a member of the leadership, ann, who said they are glad in some ways that more allegations are coming out. they think that will help push him to resignation sooner rather than later. in this effort to push him out, here comes a new poll by nbc news, the wall street journal that shows congress needs to work on his reputation. it shows 74% of americans disapprove of the job that congress is doing. chuck, that seems particularly high. it s always high. is it higher? it is. it s interesting. since republicans took control of the house there was a little bit of a honeymoon for congress. instead of being really unpopular they were just unpopular. the approval rating was over 20% for the first six months. it hasn t been this low since march of 2010. that s when health care was passeded where congress was under a lot of ideological pressure and everybody was unhappy with them. when you look at it on the superficial part, weiner is giving congress a bad reputation. on the issue front you see a senate not being able to get anything done on the debt ceiling. it s not surprising to me that the opinion has gotten worse. that adds to the pressure in the upcoming election. there is bad news in your poll for republicans. it says 73% of republicans approved of the gop field in 2008. look at this number. 45% of republicans are dissatisfied with choices for 2012. what s mising? what are they looking for, chuck? reporter: they are clearly not happy. mitt romney is not firing up all parts of the base. we know this even from opinion leaders inside the party. that s why you see texas governor rick perry popping up. you had 45%. this was lower than the feel four years ago. it means you will see a summer of speculation. more talk about rick perry. more talk about sarah palin. more talk about chris christie in new jersey because right now romney is not exciting anybody. nobody else in that field appears poised to challenge romney for the nomination. that said, the poll did find he has widened his lead as a favorite. reporter: absolutely. let s move on to obama. his approval ratings have taken a hit, due in part to pessimism about the economy. how tough is it going to be for the president headed into re-election? reporter: this isn t easy. our pollsters say it s remarkable the president s job rating is able to hold up at 49% when you look at the economic indicators. you have the highest level in two years of pessimism about the economy. 30% of americans believe the economy will get worse in the next 12 months, highest in two years. 44%, ann, think we are headed for another recession. yet the president is close to 50% in his job rating i. at some point the bad economy could start pulling him down. so far it s not part of that. he s got a loyal base inside the democratic party which is important for incumbents trying to win re-election. before you go i want to ask about our investigative reporting about newt gingrich s wife having a negative impact on his campaign. he had this reaction on fox news. i believe nbc owes calista an apology. the fact is my campaign is my campaign. yes, we make decisions as a couple, but in the end i take full responsibility. i think the program this morning was totally irresponsible and personally reprehensible and the kind of thing that makes it hard to get decent people to run for public office. nbc news is standing by its reporting. what is the reaction in washington? reporter: this is misplaced anger. nobody should be surprised when a candidate stands up for their spouse. that s the type of partnership that s just the nature of a solid marriage. that said, his anger probably should be at his aides because all of the reporting on this has been about how newt gingrich was allowing his personal issues, whether it was actions by his wife, by his production company, to somehow be prioritized over the presidential campaign. these folks left because they felt newt gingrich was not putting a priority on running a campaign. instead he was worried about going on vacation, keeping things happy at home. nothing wrong with those things, but that s not how you win the presidency. thanks so much. it s 7:19. here s matt. thanks, ann. to libya and the ongoing fighting between gadhafi s forces and renl rebels. there are growing concerns violence could spread to libya s most spectacular, ancient sites. stephanie gosk has more on this. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. in libya today the civil war threatens to tear the country apart. moammar gadhafi is clinging to power as nato intensifies bombing. in the face of that it s easy to forget or overlook that the country is rich in ancient history, that is until the artifacts of the history are thrown into the crosshairs of the crisis. this is an ancient roman city on the coast of the mediterranean. an hour and a half drive from tripoli, just over 30 miles west of where government forces are locked in a bloody battle with rebels. the commander of the rebels says gadhafi is using this place where the roman emperor septum severus was born using these. deadly and a target for war planes. this is a credible information, a credible report. it is true and it is very much consistent with gadhafi s tactics. reporter: the opposition says gadhafi is relying on nato not to bomb ancient ruins. at the time this was the grandest roman city. today it is a world heritage site. there are plenty of places to hide rocket launchers but no guarantees from nato that they aren t going to hit them. the government took us there. the accusations were lies. there are no weapons here at all. reporter: with regular propaganda from both sides and no proof from the rebels, there is little way to know for sure. in the small area the government let us see there were plenty of marble columns, well preserved arches and a lovely ampitheatre. no signs of rockets or war. commanders of nato say they can t confirm gadhafi s forces are hiding weapons here. they say when they evaluate targets they don t just consider civilian casualties, they look at the infrastructure of the country. stephanie gosk, thank you very much. coming up, the defense set to begin presenting at the casey anthony murder trial today. will casey take the stand? there is no evidence that dads may be onto something with their constant wrestling and horseplay with the children that s very good for them. we moms should rethink when we try to stop them. we have a lot to get to. let s begin with casey anthony s murder trial. kerry sanders is in orlando where he has been for a while now. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. three years ago today, caylee marie anthony died. it s a strange confluence of dates because on this day the defense will start arguing that casey did not murder her own daughter after they lost an argument in court. they lost the argument to the judge that prosecutors did not produce enough evidence for any jury to conclude that casey murdered her daughter. casey anthony stared at her attorney as he argued the judge should dismiss the case now. now, in this case, there is not any evidence of anything other than a caring, loving mother/child relationship. reporter: in what will be a preview of the closing arguments, mason said prosecution witnesses may have testified about deadly chloroform, duct tape found on caylee s skull, even her skeleton hidden in the woods about a five-minute walk from her mother s home. even with that, mason argued, the state didn t prove caylee was murdered or that her mother had anything to do with it. there is no evidence to establish when the child died, where she died, how she died, who, if anyone, was with her in attendance when she died and they have failed wholly to rebut the reasonable hypothesis of innocence that it was an accidental death. reporter: the defense argues caylee accidentally drowned in the backyard swimming pool and in a misguided effort to avoid her mother s criticism, casey covered it up. the law is the law. reporter: prosecutors believe their witnesses have proven casey suffocated her daughter and, for the first time, they added, even absent toxicology tests they believe the jury will conclude casey poisoned her daughter. it is our position that a reasonable jury in this case can conclude that caylee marie anthony died as a result of the application of three pieces of duct tape to her nose and mouth. that a reasonable jury can conclude that caylee marie anthony died as a result of poisoning by chloroform. in our case there has been no evidence presented that casey marie anthony used duct tape for any purpose, that she used chloroform for any purpose and in any way whatsoever contributed to the cause of death of this child. it is forcing, guessing and speculation and not in this country. reporter: shortly in the courthouse over my shoulder here the defense will begin presenting its case. the big question is, will casey anthony take the stand in her own defense? matt? kerry, thank you very much. savannah guthrie is today s legal correspondent. good morning to you. good morning. we ll get to the question about whether casey will take the stand in a second. if you re a member of the jury and you have been sitting through the prosecution case and you have not seen direct evidence about when caylee died, how she died, who killed her or anything like that, how confident would you be feeling about a guilty verdict right now? the proof beyond a reasonable doubt is a very high standard. it s questionable whether jurors will feel they have enough. i think the prosecutors have proven something criminal happened and that casey anthony is connected to it. will jurors be able to look at the evidence and come to the conclusion that this is a woman who premeditated the killing of her daughter and executed it through the chloroform and the duct tape? they say they have proof beyond a reasonable doubt. that s the question. what the prosecution has done a very good job of two things. one, they have proven that casey anthony is a liar. they have trapped her in several very important lies. does that, in some way in the mind of a jury, make up for a lack of concrete evidence in other areas? in terms of some kind of conviction, it does. she s lying for a reason. jurors will ask themselves, why? and this is a woman who did not report her child was missing for 31 days. jurors will look at the evidence and say, why? they ll think she did something. that s the other thing the prosecution has done a good job of doing. they painted a picture of a woman who went out partying and enjoyed a good life knowing her daughter was dead or missing, depending on the story you believe. that cannot help casey anthony. it can t. however, i have always had a problem with the motive prosecutorsffered in the case. she wanted a better life, to have fun? she was a mom too young, wanted to party. first of all, prosecutors do not have to put on any evidence of motive. as a practical matter they like to because jurors want to understand the motivation. let s talk about the defense case. some legal experts i have read have said, you know, in some ways the defense has painted itself, backed itself into a corner by saying caylee anthony died in an accidental drowning in the swimming pool. as the defense puts on the case do they have to prove that happened? as a legal matter, no. they don t have to prove anything. as a practical matter, yes. jose baez stood up and offered a counter narrative, an alternate story. jurors want to hear it. prove it to me, yeah. if they don t see the proof they may not be willing to believe it. and the story comes from the proven liar, casey anthony. you stole my last question. yes, the question of whether casey anthony will take the stand in her own defense, the jury already knows she s a liar. the defense admits she s a liar. why would jurors believe anything she says on the stand though she s raised her hand? [ giggling ] it ranges from horseback riding to pillow fighting. we basically just dog pile, take each other around. it s run and jump on dad as soon as he s on the floor. reporter: but not mom. todd s wife is more of a spectator. he s down there being pretty rough with the children. there s a part of me that s like, oh, i don t know. so i sit back, watch, let him be and i just let it happen. reporter: experts say don t be too concerned. get in there. it s one of the secrets to dad s success. horseplay teaches boys and girls the lessons of life like thinking fast, shaking things off, even independence. this michigan doctor, a father of three, is such a fan he wrote a book about it the art of roughhousing. what may be a dying art. i think two things that are affecting play and roughhousing specifically are the screen time and video games invading homes across the country as well as an obsession with safety. people are too afraid of a skinned knee or a bruise. it is an opportune time for parents to cut the strings and let kids be kids. reporter: according to one study, fathers are cutting the strings more often. dads spend 35% of their time playing with kids, 29% for moms. moms may say, look, we are busy doing the work. i encourage them to play. i get down on the ground. we play cards, barbies and trucks. but i stay on the outskirts and watch. he ll drag them owl over tall o house, tickle and wrestle. i seldom do that on my own without him here. reporter: right. let s be honest. moms are usually more nurturing. kids need that, but they need this, too. so they are learning about the tricks of the trade of the world and how difficult the world can be, but they are also doing it in a protected and safe environment with someone they respect and love and who loves them. that s important. moms and dads are different. i think what s useful is for kids to get the of benefit of both. reporter: in todd s house, he s getting the kids out of their comfort zone and making memories. this is most likely what they will remember of their childhood, of me. cute. of course, don t take it too far. kids can get hurt, but experts say you have to know your children. you can push the limits with them. i have been doing it for years before i knew it officially helped you. there are my little girls skylar and sloan. i really just like when they re exhausted and can t move. that makes night-night easier. thank you very much, jeff. hal ronkel is the author of scream free parenting. good morning to you. have we been making too little of the horse play that dads do with kids over the years? well, i think we have been making a little too little of the unique contributions fathers make overall. in fact, ann said she thinks fathers are underrated. i think we have wanted to celebrate and honor what mothering can do, but i think celebrating fathers doesn t denigrate the contributions that mothers make. the article gets specific here, hal. let me read something. interactions are more physical and rambunctious. dads are more likely to startle babies, laugh, play physical games like tossing in the air and that is believed to help kids develop self-regulatory skills. does that make sense to you? absolutely. one of the great things we do is help our kids learn to manage themselves. when they have to rough play and it s not all nurturing sometimes they have to defend themselves. they have to stand up for themselves. one of the great joys of life is talking smack with my kids. my son is now 12. we re playing basketball and bantering back and forth. so it s not as much physical rough play anymore. it is a sense of, you know, i m challenging him to stand up for himself. i do the same thing with my daughter as well. let s get a female perspective on this. does this make sense to you? absolutely. we want both moms and dads to be involved. they have unique contributions to how a child develops. here s what the article goes on to say about other interactions. for example, the temper tantrum. a lot of parents walk in with a game plan. dads correct is child with wrong words or distract them with humor. moms try to reason with a child and use face-to-face interaction. does that sound right to you? it sounds right. if you wonder which works, it depends on the child, the situation. it always depends. something that works with one child may not work with another. sometimes it s a combination of those contributions from mom and dad. i think robin makes a good point. it s important to have the contributions of mom and dad. we conducted an unscientific poll on our website. who s the better parent mom or dad. 59% came in at team mom. 41% for team dad. does that surprise you? i didn t have that. i didn t have anybody. reporter: community kitchens is dedicated to making difficult lives easier. our income is $757 a month. there is no way to live off that. our rent is $425. but this place helps me keep a smile on my face. it s probably one of our primary tenets and beliefs. everyone is welcome. everyone is deserving of a warm meal. reporter: andrea blackard is the executive director. for her it s a labor of love but at times becomes personal. so many americans live paycheck to paycheck. i recognize in the end they know i care. and i do genuinely from the heart. it s part of my calling. path of destruction, one of the worst tornado outbreaks in american history devastates the south. reporter: in april, a string of deadly tornadoes ripped through alabama causing widespread death and destruction. in the days that followed, community kitchens was there to help the red cross provide meals for people in shelters who lost everything. i thank god for touching their heart in order for them to do this. reporter: community kitchens intends to keep working to make a difference in their community. and here we are. andrea blackhurt. are you ready to open up the trucks? visit royalcaribbean.com today. more than 58,000 americans died in the vietnam war and many others were severely injured. among them, nbc news military analyst and medal of honor recipient, retired colonel jack jacobs. we ll talk to him in a moment. first, we have jacobs emotional journey back to the battlefield where he saved more than a dozen lives. far away from the noise, the bustle, and the youthful optimism of modern day vietnam is a place where banana boats still navigate the river, mothers and daughters bathe along the shore and time seems to stand still. and where so many of an american generation left behind their innocence. the mecong delta. for the first time since the war, jack jacobs returned. it s like time has gone backwards. reporter: on a search for the battlefield where he nearly died over 40 years ago. we landed here and headed due north. reporter: with images seared in his memory. this is it. this is it. this was all open field back then. reporter: the rice paddy has been flooded for fishing, but in the eyes of a retired colonel it s as if he can see himself all those years ago, a 22-year-old first lieutenant caught in an ambush, seriously wounded in a hail of devastating machine gun and mortar fire. you don t even here it. it s so close. you feel the rush of warm air, get lifted up and so on. reporter: you retch ach up t hole in your head. you re convinced it isn t happening and then you realize it is. reporter: bleeding profusely, blind in one eye, his hearing impaired, jacobs went onto the battlefield again and again and again, saving 14 lives that day until he collapsed and was medevaced unconscious to a military hospital after a harrowing rescue. for conspicuous ga lan tri. reporter: he was awarded the medal of honor by president nixon. danger doesn t make heroes, it finds them. reporter: it found jacobs, march 9, 1968. all 5 4 of him, ammunition flying. scenes that punctuate his nightmares even now and that so many years later drew him back to vietnam. it was important for me, for an unexplainable series of reasons, that i had to be here. i had the opportunity to do so and here i am. reporter: nbc news, the mecong delta. colonel jacobs, it s an honor, good morning. good morning. being wounded in the head, why did you go back 14 times? i thought i was the only guy who could do anything. we all fought for each other. i knew if i were in the same situation they would come get me. so i had to do it. i kept doing it because i thought nobody else could. in this journey we ll see more about on nightly news you meet some of the enemy. i met the enemy commander who s now 82 years old, a retired brigadier general. he lives near a bicycle shop not far from where we fought. we talked about the battle 43 years after the fact. even all these years later it created healing for you. i wonder what the takeaway is for these young men and women who were serving today in the other wars and the numbers of them and struggles for them ahead. what would you say? it holds it in. just push it in. i like to get some salt and pepper on the outside of this bad boy, just like that. the flavors are inside. you pop it on the grill like that? no oil or anything? a little bit of oil. i seasoned up the grill pretty good. this goes right on like this snm po . pork, you have to be careful this. how long do you suggest? three, four minutes per side and let it rest. you worked in a fancy restaurant that with veal. you can do veal. if you re on a budget use the pork. now we have the pork belly, and i like to take a little bit of the glaze, dribble it right on top. that s ready to go. ready to go. now we have the pork. pork belly sliders. normally made in a dutch oven. you do it on a grill. i like to do it in the oven, grill it for a char mark. little bit of pesto mayo. little burger buns. cheddar. cheddar. caramelized onions here. this is the sweetness. o we have an onion lover in the house! uh-huh. this is hot. taste this. i will take it. you want another one, baby?
