clouds linger after last night's storms. will we see any showers this mother's day weekend? meteorologist tim williams has the answer in his first warning weather forecast. eyewitness news saturday morning is seconds away . good morning, welcome to eyewitness news this saturday. i'm gigi barnett. i'm tim williams. temperatures are in the 40s area wide. it's not a bad start to the morning. >> good morning. >> good morning. we are looking at clouds, but the sun is peaking through. we had showers and thunderstorms role through last night. you can see the horizon is brightening. there will be a good bit of sun today. you don't have to worry too much about any showers today. not really part of the forecast for today. we do have another system rolling in that could bring us a chance of showers tomorrow, but even tomorrow, most of the day is a try day. so that's a good thing. we have some sun now, mid-40s, and a daytime high of 74. overnight lows in the 40s. we'll have your complete first warning forecast in just a moment. thank you, tim. here's what we'll are talking about this morning. maryland leaders are warning to be on the lookout after dozens of schools received letters containing a suspicious powder. kelly mcpherson has more. >> reporter: good morning, four months ago the state was on alert because of suspicious packages. and now once again the state of maryland is asking schools and emergency responders to watch what's in the mail. >> 37 letters with suspicious white powder have shut down 28 d.c. schools this week. >> and all of the teachers were like this isn't a drill. this isn't a drill, go, go, go. >> i touched the powder and envelope and there was writing inside. it was from north dallas, texas it said al-qaeda, usa. >> reporter: none of the letters had been delivered to any maryland schools, but the state wants all of the prince pams and faculty and students to be aware of the situation just in case. >> if they get things and they find that they're not quite comfortable with them to isolate those into an area and to call 911. >> reporter: nema is alerting schools and local emergency managers to be on guard. this latest mail scare comes four months after two incendiary devices were sent to the governor and in annapolis. and allstate post offices were put on alert. >> these are not related incidences, but they come under the heading of terrorism. when we realize there is a heightened sense that we want to make sure we stay on top of it. >> reporter: d.c. schools were back in session on friday, but anger lingers. >> we take everyone seriously because we have to. obviously, to the extent that there is nothing involved here, it diverts our attention from other situations that our law enforcement officials should be focusing on. >> reporter: the fbi says all of the d.c. letters originated in texas. no one has been arrested yet and the case four months ago here in maryland, no one has been arrested for that one either. reporting from north baltimore, kelly mcpherson wjz eyewitness news. the postal service is investigating several other letters that were delivered in dallas and several school officials across the nation. the killing of osama bin laden was carried out just in time according to new material taken from the compound in pakistan. this is amateur video found from inside. during the raid u.s. forces reportedly found propaganda tapes with videos of bin laden and communication with al-qaeda leaders. president obama met in private yesterday with some of the navy seals who carried out the raid. >> it was a chance for me to say on behalf of all americans and people around the world, job well done. job well done. >> and later today u.s. leaders plan to release some of the material found inside bin laden's compound. congressman dutch rupersberger says our biggest threat lies in yemen. >> an american born, american trained, he knows our culture, he's very smart. he's very dangerous. and his focus is to attack the united states. >> the congressman returned from yemen and says agents are on the ground there trying to disrupt the al-qaeda network. friends and family of phylicia barnes will gather today for a final farewell. funeral services for the teen will be held this afternoon in georgia. the honors student was visiting her sister in baltimore when she vanished back in december. months later rescue workers pulled her body out of the susquehanna river. police officially rule barnes' death as a homicide. a local memorial service for her is scheduled next saturday at mount pleasant baptist church in northeast baltimore. a baltimore midwife pleads guilty after the death of a baby she was trying to deliver. 44-year-old karen carr assisted a virginia woman with a high risk birth even though carr was not licensed in that state. the baby died when the head was lodged in the birth canal tore 20 minutes. carr will spend five days in jail as part of the plea deal. outrage is growing over a violent beating of a transgendered woman inside a baltimore county mcdonald's. the 911 tape has been released. kai jackson has more. >> reporter: this rosedale mcdonald's was the scene of a violent attack on april 18th. police have released the tens filled call to 911. >> the girls beat him up, it's crazy. >> he was assaulted? >> to see the videos and people in there, they didn't help her. >> police say the he is actually a 22-year-old transgendered woman named chrisy polis. >> you don't have to explain yourself to nobody, be who you are and go as you are. >> investigators say for some reason 18-year-old teonna brown and a 14-year-old girl got into a dispute with polis and attacked her. a mcdonald employee captured video of the attack which went viral on the internet. the employee was fired. the video shows polis having a seizure after the beating. >> she is a having a seizure in mcdonald's. >> is he awake? >> is he moving? >> yeah he is moving. >> beyond increased security, mcdonald's says he is continuing to investigate trying to determine what other employees were doing while the victim was beat. baltimore county police have charged both attackers with assault and are debating bumping up charges to a hate crime. >> i believe it should be a hate crime hate versus one versus another, it truly was, it truly was hate. >> reporter: the 14-year-old is being charged as a juvenile, that's why her name is not being released. >> i'm kai jackson, reporting back to you. the baltimore county state's attorney has not yet decided to file any additional charges. the face of downtown towson is changing with the closing of the towson common movie theater. the baltimore sun says the eight screen theater will show its last movie next weekend nearly 20 years after it opened. all of towson commons is vacant except that theater. towson university has been in talks to lease some of the retail space there. hundreds of people will lays up their running shoes in baltimore today to raise money for als research. a former ravens and his wife cochair the fiesta 5k race which starts at power plant live. three years ago bergans went public with his als diagnosis. the fee he is at that 5k has raised more than $250 million for als research. it is the end of a era for the university of maryland, terps basketball head coach gary williams calls it quits after 22 years at his alma mater. mark viviano has more on the farewell. >> reporter: one more grand entrance to announce that it's time for him to exit. fans and players gathered for the goodbye for 22 years maryland basketball was known as garyland. after a long, successful run, gary williams says now it's time for him to go. >> it's just a gut feeling really more than anything else. it's a time in my life where i have an opportunity to do some things. >> reporter: williams leaves with more victories than any coach in maryland history. he won games, trophies and countless accolades, plus the respect and admiration of many. >> when you think of maryland basketball, you think gary williams. it's going to be very strange not having him here. we wanted to be able to come and say goodbye. >> i think he's going to realize there is some great comfort in enjoying the rest of his life knowing that he has millions that respect him and love him for what he did for the university of maryland. >> he demonstrated at the end of the day what it takes to be a great leader. that's something i'll always cherish and always thank coach williams for. >> reporter: while he moves on, his name are remain. the university plans to in scribe the arena hardwood gary williams court. q. didn't walk out here for 22 years thinking i hope they put my name on a court, now that it is here it's a great honor. hopefully, hopefully a lot of people will feel the same way, that they were responsible for that happening. >> mark viviano, wjz, eyewitness news spoĆ” sports. williams will remain with maryland as an associate athletic director and help in the school's fund raising efforts. the next half hour we'll have the latest on the terps' search for a new head coach. in baseball this morning, the orioles are back home to face tampa bay this weekend. rookie pitcher zach britain was on the mound. rays' rookie brandon guyer takes his first major league at bat, giving tampa the three to nothing lead. the orioles could not get the bats going. they start with a six to two loss. and the orioles are back at home again this weekend and today at the stadium you can see the game today on wjz and tomorrow's game again the rays live at 1:30 on wjz. today's game -- tomorrow's game you can see on wjz at 1:30. today we have a forecast for the game. it will be a decent day if you go down, it will be breezy. not too bad, no chance of showers. the forecast is going to be pretty nice. we'll show you that in a second. all right. well -- there it is. >> all right. we'll elaborate on that in a second. >> basically if people don't have an excuse to not get out and get their mother's day gift last minute, the weather will cooperate? >> the weather will cooperate. we'll talk about the flowermart here in a little bit. you've been down there before. >> i have. as a matter of fact i'll be down there this afternoon because there is an annual dance contest. i'll be emc. eeing that. if you want to go out and get your groove on. >> i'll leave that to other folks. that's okay. >> okay. >> weather definitely will cooperate for anything you're doing outside today. tomorrow a chance of some sprinkles, not going to washout mother's day. that's good thing. first warning live doppler radar. as far as the radar is concerned, it looks pretty clear right now from that view. we'll give you an idea of what it looks like when we open this up. when we open it up, it will be a little bit more ominous looking, but don't be too concerned about everything you see there. moving in from the west is going to be storm system much like the one yesterday, widely scattered showers and for the most part, everyone is not going to be affected by these. we'll see some shower activity, a lot of this energy lifts up to the north and northwest of us. so we're going to see portions of this just drifting up toward the great lakes. a portion moving down to the south, but we'll be right smack in the middle where we could see widely scattered showers out of it, but it will be in the afternoon tomorrow. much of the day starts like today, but scattered showers in the late afternoon. 40 degrees at bwi marshall, 46 the dew point, relative humidity 92%. winds from the west at 5 miles per hour. 29.91 is your barometer reading. 45 in oakland, 52 in cumberland, 52 in hagerstown. 57 in ocean city. around the immediate metro area, everyone getting past that mid to upper 40s, from columbia to the airport. rock hall already at 55. 353 on kent island -- 53 on kent island and annapolis. cumberland, calm winds, variable wind, north readings, a bit of a northwest reading. west readings, they're all over the place right now. they are very light. we're not looking at a windy day, even though we had blustery storms role through yesterday. we will not be dealing with anything quite like that this afternoon or even this morning. 48 # degrees right now, right in line with all the other temperatures around the region. 48 in detroit, 60 toward kansas city, 53 in atlanta. no drastic changes up and down the eastern seaboard. focus on kentucky today because of storms rolling through. they could have a wet track for the kentucky derby today, but the showers are again going to be moving into our direction. we'll see a chance of showers as another system approaches tomorrow. as you see, our computer model, at least this particular one, does not even have shower activity in the immediate forecast for the next 48 hours. so that's a good thing. don't be too freaked out by the chance that we have showers for mother's day. it will not be a big part of the forecast. 74 today. 48 tonight with mostly cloudy conditions, back up to 74 tomorrow. sun with areas of spotty showers. temperatures will be very comfortable. 75 monday. 75 tuesday, 74 and 76 on wednesday and thursday. overnight lows in the low to mid 50s. >> all right. still to come on in the 60s. boaters taking advantage of the early season. on land, the forecast cooperates. today a decent start to your weekend. periods of clouds and sun, 74 for the daytime high. 48 tonight, with showers potentially late. that is not a big part of the forecast, but we have to leave that mention in. we're talking a 20% chance. periods of sun tomorrow about a 20% chance of showers in the late afternoon. we'll have the complete five day forecast in a few moments. thank you, tim. first back to some of the other stories people are talking about. some mixed news for job seekers as the latest unemployment numbers are released. according to the labor department, companies are hiring workers at the fastest pays in five years, the latest report shows the economy added 22,000 jobs last month, but the unemployment rate rose slightly last month in part because more unemployed people have resumed their job search. more trouble for thousands of people in the south as the fast rising mississippi river continues to threaten their homes. levees are being raised to hold back the water. by next week the mississippi could crest at 48 feet. that would be an all time record. more than 1000 homes in memphis may be evacuated. a school trip in kansas takes a more horrible turn after a leopard attacks a seven-year-old boy. police say the first grader was on a field trip at the zoo when he slipped away from his class and climbed under a security rail. as he approached the leopard's enclosure one of the cats reached out and grabbed him. witness says it all happened in a flash. >> the cat just really reached out and grabbed him by his head and then clawed him. a man and woman who were stand interesting jumped through there and kicked him in his head and he released the child and they just grabbed him and put pressure on the side of his face where he clawed him. >> the zoo says the boy suffered deep scratches to his face and neck. but he is expected to be okay. trauma counselors were brought in to talk with the other students on the field trip. they say a good parent has to know how to multitask. that was very true for a dad in tennessee. take a look at this video. watch closely as the foul ball heads into the stands. that's where a man in a green shirt catches it while holding his daughter. a little toddler daughter there. no word on what -- what mom thinks about this daddy, daughter adventure. i know how that conversation went. hey, hon, i caught a foul ball. you took my daughter to the baseball game? he can't believe he caught the ball, number one, but to do it with one hand. you know, the little girl is like, what's going on? why is everybody clapping? >> this is every day at our house. >> i admire it, he caught it. >> fought off all the other tomorrow afternoon. 75 on monday, 72 on tuesday, 74 and 76 on wednesday and thursday. volunteers in baltimore are trying to tame mother nature. alex demetrick reports the project at mother's garden means stepping up as city funds dry up. >> reporter: this garden was dedicated in the 1920s, honoring baltimore mothers. it was enjoyed for decades. >> my mother used to come here and her children game here and have fond memories of when the park was in good shape. >> reporter: getting it back in shape has fallen mostly to volunteers as the city cuts department budgets to fund essential services. >> gardens like this tend to sometimes, you know, we've got to kind of turn our back on them and focus on other priorities in the city. >> reporter: while mayor william donald schaefer did restoration work in honor of his mothers. some of those touches still bloom, but a bridge no longer crosses a pond and unearthing stone walkways is a tough job. volunteers and donations are carving out bright spots. >> can you big a hole? >> yeah. mom. >> the more the park can be used the better. if people can come out and support the park that will make it worthwhile. >> this is the future for garden maintenance in the park. >> reporter: if you're one of a handful of volunteers restoring 5 acres of parkland might seem overwhelming. >> it does, but every little bit gets to our goal that make
