we ll tell you where the storm is headed tod, saturday january th, 201 ptions paid for by nbc-universal tevision good morning, everybody. nice to have you here. welcome to toda on a saturday morning i mester holt. and i m amy robach. yesterday i think weere bracing r a lot of snow. there wasn t that much. today there might be more. aot of plows on thetreet of new york go figure. to mak up for the lack of them the lastime around. but there s another band of winter coming to the noheast. this is startin out to be a really, really tough winter. that time of year, right? also the new job nuers. unployment did drop to its lowest rate since maof 2009. 9.4%. but job creation was lower than experts predicted. and more americans apparently stopped looking for wo. fed chairn ben bernanke said fray at this rate it could takeour or five more yrs for a fu recovery. cong up we re going to look at what the numbersean and where the jobs are being created. and then a desperate search under way for a missing teen in baltimore. what happed to felia simone barnes. she s a 16-year-old honor studt who sappeared nearly two weeks ago while visiting relatives for the holidays. now policeear she s been abducted. we ll get the latest from police, and the girl s mother ju ahead. also ahead, new developments in the case of theo-called milkshake murder. you ght remember the story of nancy kissel, convicted of murdering r husband after knocng him out with milkshake laced with sedaves. the story inspired books and a made for tv movie. last year her conviction s overrned. the new trial will sta next week. coming up we ll get the latest in this strange drama. and later on, i know lester thinks he s got the ves, but u ve got competition. wait until you see this grp. they re one of the nba s hotte dance teams. but if you notice ything different there. well we re going to introduce you to the senr citizens, 65-plus burning up the court withheir hip-hop dancing, n less looking good. but first the latest job numbers. unemploynt dropped from 9.8 to 9.4% for the month of december but while employers reported more than 100,000 jobs created at s less than predicted and slower than needed for the economy to ful recover. nbc s vin tibbles has re. reporter: it s e biggest onmonth drop in unemployment since april 1998. on the sface, good news. but where are the jobs? thunemployment numbers reveal 14.5 million americans remain out of work. 6.4 million of them for more than six months. we re now 18 months into the recovery and everybody s waiting for when will ttumber happen? when will we see a big job creation number to suggest that job creation engineas turned on? reporter: dember s job creation simpldid not materialize at the predicted pace. so the falling unemployment rate indicates many people have simply stopped looking. the president anowledged the listless recovery while visiting a small window manufacturing plant in landover, ryland. still got a whole bunch of folks who are out there looking. ill struggling. we ve got a big hole that we re digging ourselves out of. repter: for some that hole deeper than others. among african-americans the unemployment rate is 18%. d for hispanic it is 13%. but in bloomington, minnesota, finally, after a year and a halfchrissy clocker is working agai initially when i fst got unemployed iwas tragic. reporter: after waitressing pa-time, the 25-year-old engineer found her dream job working on filtration syste for donaldson company. donaldson laid off 2800 workers in therecession, and its ceo says an uptick in orders now ans he s hiring. we re expecting our sales to be backo our record lels e-recession and we canxpect our employment to be pretty close,s well repter: accounting firm mcladry says it s looking to fill 1100 new jobs i the coming year. we see more confidence in our clients and their growth pns whichives us conference. reporter: still john challenger said the recession hit so hard it will take many busisses time to have confidence in any positive numbers. coming out of deep recession, nobody really believes that recory is for real. at we re really out of the woods. reporte for today, kevin tibbles, nbc news, chicag and jning us now to break down the numbers is tri regan, co-anchor of cnbc s the call. good morning. if you just lked at the headne here you d say this is great, great news. sure, 9.8% down to 9.4%. but when you look beyond that headne what you actually find is number one, many more jobs were expected to have been cread. they only created about 103,000. it s just not enough to really sustain this economy, to really grow this economy. the other big headline here, it s a fact that 9.4%, that reduction in the overall unemployment rate, is really a result of a reduction in the numb of people participating in the labor force. in other words, a lot of peoe said, i m giving up. i can t find work. it not howany people are really sitting home without jobs. it does to a certain extent. but what it tells you as well is just a lotf people dropped out of the labor forc so that s one of theeasons you re seeing this reductn. when those peopleome back into the labor forc when they feel like a can get a job, you re probably going to see the unemployment rattick back up. what did the seonal employment picture doo this number? not a whole lot here. i mean, you would have hoped that seasal employment, pecially within the retail sector, would have meant more on the job front. but, again, only 103,0 jobs created in december. we had the ceo of macy s on cnbc recentlyand he was sing that they re not hiring. now that s important, because macy s accounts for one in every five jobs within the retail sector. sof they re not hiring, that gives you some sense of reil s lack of performce right now. let s take a more optimistic stance here. what are are hiring? what arehe fields that are looking good? well, technology is certainly one ofthem. health care is another area educion. these are three sectorshere you are finding some growth. but you know, kee in mind, back in 2000 you had technology that was just booming andhat really helped to fuel the economy and then, of course, you had the real estate industry and construction aer that. and when you look around today, there s no real career sector that s about to really break out. yes, these three secrs are doing well butt s not like there s a huge boom on the horizon. whh, to one extent is probably healthy. you don t want another real estate i just want to run through forbes.com came up with the list ofest and worst cies because these nbers don t always apply around the country, washington, d.c., boston, austi among the best. then las vegas, riverside, calirnia, miami among the worst. what drives these various markets? when u look at las vegas, when you look at miami, when you look a parts of lifornia, one of the reasons those areas are really suffering is because of the real estate crisis. i an, let s face it when you look at foreclures, florida, vegas, these are are that have been very, very hard hit. on the other hand, areas like austin, whington, d.c. and bost are doing really well. now washington, d.c., of urse, has all those federal employees. as long as the government continues to end, washington, d. probably is gng to do well. boston, you ve got a big tech center there. lot of education the. we were just talng about technology andducation being big areas of growth. an austin, similar sry there. technology is big and you have the university there in austin which is helng employnt. trish rega good to have you on. thanks very much and now here s amy. lester, tha you. president obama said frida that accelerating job growths his mission. and nohe has a new economic team at his side and a new congress to work with. re with the political side of things is mark halperin, senio politicalnalyst for msnbc, and so time magazine. mark, good morning. hey, amy. the unemployment number elections have been won and lost over this number. are we going t see now this new focus of ts new congress specifally be about the jobs and theconomy? there so question. look, the present, all presidents, you say, deal with unemployment. it s a huge indicator. this president has now tied the unemployment number like nhing else. gdp, all sorts of other economic numbers ar going to be out there but h has to find a way to create jobs. the opportunity he has now is republicans, ecause they control the hoe, they ve got to be involved in governing, too. they ve got to ho, the president hato hope, the country has hope, that even though they re at odds, hey re polical foes, they ve got t find a way to work to theo create jobs. there s nother prioritnow that tters. a new congress and also some new staff changes for president obama. many people are calling this a move to the center. he s brought in gene speing o held the position during the clinton administration. one of obams top economic advise and bill daley as his new chief of staff. what is this refocusing going to mean for the oma administration? i think it s less about centrist than about people who can get things done. experienced people. yes they worked in the clinton administrationut if you look at democrats, before clion the last democratic predent was jimmy carter. so you ve got to lookor where you can find people of your o party to serve in these jobs. bill daley is a guy who wants to get things done, will work with republics but also will work with liberal democrats. the key for the psident and these w people is people of accomplishment, people he s comftable with, and again to gethe economy moving you need peopleho know what they re doing. i think he s brought in some pretty good people. and yes this perceived move to the center has drawn some criticism from those liberal democrat does he need those liberal democrats to get things done at this point he does. he nds to go back and i think he s thinking as he conjures up e state of the union to first principles of what he s abou he wants to beeading a movement that s not about jus the left. he wants the left included he wants a movement o the whole country. that s whatot him elected. that s what people saw in him. i think he needs to go back to that. i don t think is a question of is he gng to the center, is he alienating the left. it san he knit together the country? the businesscommunity, political leaders in washington, people around the country in a way at said, therere challenges, how are we going to meet them? i think that s what he srying to do right now. quickly this week, republicans are going to try and tackle health care reform o at leastepealing whathey call, want to get it right, the job-killing health bill. it s expected to pass in e house, notn the senate. so what are republicans ting to accomplish here? they re trying to lep to their promise to say they re going to try to repeal this. i think the big question i not this focus. what do they do the rest of the ar? since it won t be repealed, the president would never sign a repeal and it won t be overriddenwhat do they want to do the rest of the year? do they want to keep fighting abouhealth care or create jobs? the president s g to put them in a box so they don t keep working on health care andry to help him and the count do what needs toe done. forget the politicians, we need more jobs. mark halperin, hanks so ch. we appreciate it. now here s lester. amy, thanks. two mississippi sisters, oe sentenced to life in prison for med robbery, are free women this morng. but they were relead under one unusual condition. one sister must donate a kidney to the oer. nbc s th trang jns us live outse the family s home in pensacola, florida. good morng. gladys and jamie scott arrived here atheir mother s house in the early morning hours and enjoyetheir first night s rest as free women after a whirlwind 24 hours for thesisters. after 16 years behind prison walls we re free! wee free! gladys and jamie scott rode away as free wome one their fir stops i m feeling good. reporte gloria s kitchen. the restaurant and its patrons, longtime supporters ofhe sisters, whom they say were unstly punished i love macaroni! i love it. 16 years! free atlast. free at last! reporter: sentenced to life prison for their role in the 1993 armed robbery tha yielded only a handful of cash, the sisters were release on the condition that gladys donate a kidney to jamie who is suffering from kidney failure. i was going to give it to her anyway. don t nobody have to release me. if they would have lete giv her, i wou have gave it to her without a sdow of a ubt. i love my sister. reporter: the scotts agreed to sit down with us on the conditio we ask nouestions about the crime. after all these years, what does freedom feel le? do youave any leads? do you have any concrete evidence at this point? amy, we have we re at square one, to be frank. we havenearly 100 law enforcement personnel, wheth it s the baltimore polic department, the fbi, national center for missing and exploit ploited children, the maryland state police. we re at full throttle. we ve thrown every single law enforcement and technological resource athis case trying to find felicia, ting to reite her safely with her family. we jt don t have any solid leads. we re at acrossroads rig now investigating two scenarios. one is thatomebody did something terrle to felicia in baltimore. and the other is that she was abducted, psibly taken out of the baltimore regi, and even out of the state of maryland. we heard from felicia s mom in the piece, janice, and we ll hear from her in just a mome. but she said there are about 20 or so youngen coming in and out of that apartment. can you give us a sense of what that comex was like, and if you have a true understanding of who was actually there and who may have been the last person to see felicia? we do. i would describe it as aollege rm setting. felicia s half-sisters younger. she had a lot offriends. they came in and out. there were about 20 people we interviewed. we whittle that last down to 12 and we re reinterviewing. we re making sure thatpeople s stories are consistent, and ld. detectives a poking those and trying to make sure we have as solid a te line as we can. at this point we really don t have any leads. all right, janice. i know that every mother out there is feeli for you at this point. it s unimaginable what you re going through. can u tell us when theast time you spoke with your daughter, and what her statef mind was like what information didhe give you when you smoke with her? i called her on christmas die to tell herhat i was lonely and i had missed all of them becaus they were all gone for the holiday. and i said, you are not going away nextyear, and s laughed and she said, mommy, i miss yo too. janice, we ve been describing your dauger. she s an hor student. she was on track to graduate fromigh school early. what else canou tell us about her an her relationship with her half-sister. were you cfortable with her being ere? well, hopper was collector for decades, literally. prolific. think most people don t know that about him. he had four chilen. they alrea have some of their own art that they ve slegted from the estate. but there was literally hundreds and hundreds of pieces. more tn any one person cld manage other than hopper, i suppose. so i just seemed approprte to send it t auion, a really share the pceeds with the children. and this is very common in an estate miion. before we get tohe art pieces i want to look at a pce of memorabilia associated with theovie that put him on the map, easy rider. this is a script. and he w the director. this is not hopper s script. this is the script from the script supervisor. what s great about it is, it s got ls of tations, continuity photraphs. there s a grt one here. so for memorabilia llectors, this is such great piece because it s a work product. very much theilm process and the ct that hopper kep this, for all the art he has, h didn t keep a l of memorabilia at the d, the fact that he hung onto this, has meaning for him. let sook atome of t artwork. this is andy warhol m tse-tung. there s something especially interesting about this. this is really my favorite piece in the sale. this is a very familiar image to a lot of people. it was a warhol. warhol and hopper were great friends starting in the 60s. in the 1970 one late night hopper got spooked, thought ther was an intruder in the house, pulled out a gun and fired off two shots. andhose holes are in this. in the light o day we fnd that he saw mao and what s great is he showed it to warhol who thought this was absoluly brilant. warhol circled the fire shots. labeled thisne warningsh, labeled this one bullet hole. it s itten right here. warning shot and bullet hole. heoved it. it now a collaboration. but it s got a great sty. i want to step dow here, look at another piece of art. this i helmet newtonook this ot. this is a great photograph. this was shot out in venus, and yoknow what swonderful aut this is, and i ve worked with this colction now for over six months. weold the first part in noveer. ere are many faces of hopper. and so th is sort of very different kind of depiction of him. you see himn the suit. he s looking verthoughtful. you ll see the next image a very fferent side of him. i actuallyove this. it s just a beautiful shot. and they were quite close. and this is dedicated to him, whh for a collector is a really special thing. it s a great shot. let s contrast t this andy ibovitz shot. more on the dark side. it s a little bit moodier. christopher walken with him? they were working on a film together te romance. what s greats it is ahot at the infamous, legend chateau marmt hotel in l.a. which gives it a whole other veneer. s a little dark. but these are kind of dark portraits of hollywood. and lastly, he was awarded a star on the hollywoodalk of tame he was. shortly before his deh. and this is actuly probably one of his last public appearances. what s great is, again, ts sale is veryuch about the art. thart collection. but obviously, you know, he made su an imprintn our culture that to have aiece that really represents the culmination o his film career, you know, starting with easy der but numerous movies since, it s just a great piece to have in the collection. any estimate what all this will go for? neighbor about a million dollars. what s great is, about 300 lots. thers things for $200 if you re a film poster collector up to about $30,000r $40,000 for a warhol. so there s really hopefully something for everyone in t sale. all right. kath thanks for being here. thank you so mu. we re back in a moment. the next, you start one eling bit off.l fine. the mont you feel run down or achy, nip flu-like symptoms in the bud, with oscillococcinum. get oscillo and feel li yourself again. osciococcinum, nip it in the bud. glamorous international city with a sey underbelly. it s not unusual for hong kong for expatate wives to rder their husband. eporter: but that s not allegedly happened in 23 in this luxury apartment complex overlooking hong kong, where in a storage room police fou the body of american eatriate robert kissel, an investment bankerith merrill lynch, wrapped in carpet. his wife nancy, a michigan native, was acced of drugging him wi a milkshake spiked with sedatives and blueoning him to death with a heavy ornament. the mother of three was charged with mder in a case that quickly became dubbed the milkshake murder. garnering worldwe attention and inspiringbooks, and a made for tv movie. wt have youdone? ie made us money. reporter: during the trial, details aboutheir marriage erged, including accusations by nancy that her husband of 14 years had been abusinger. and only a year into the preedings tragedy struck the family again, when robert s brother andrew was fou dead th multiple stab wounds in his greenwich, connecticut me. s murder is stilunsolved. nancy kissel was convictedy a jury s years ago and sentenced to life. but last year the court of final appeals, hong kong s highe court, ruled that there should be a new trial. mrs. kisse killed mr. kissel, the court wrote, in a unimous decision that cited legal errors at the original trial. that much is not in dispute. but was the killing certainly murder or might have it been in self-dense? hong kong journalist fncis moriarity has been followi the caseince the beginning. the question comes back, can she get a fair trial inong kong? reporte but the new trial, which is due to begin nex wednesday an will last 50 days, also raises anotr question. wt does nancy kissel really think? what does sheave to say? will we even see her at trial? sheook the standn the first trial. will she take it in the trial? reporter: making this not just a potential murder, but a mystery, as well. for today, adriawong, nbc news, hong kong. a joining us now for more insight is paul callen criminal defense attorney and former new york city homicide prosecutor. paul, good morng. good morning. it s not in dispute whether not nancy kisselilled her husband. she admitted so, even in her first trial. the defense putn a self-defense defse. is that likely what we ll see again this time around? we definitely see that thisime around. you know, this is such a fascinating case. ey thereas substantial evidence that she drugged her husband, andhen killed him by striking him repeatedly with a blunt instrument. trial, she surised everyone by saying, yes, i drugged him, because he was a brutal cocaine addicted person, and he attacked me with a baseball bat, and i defeed myself with this object. and that s how the trial went back and forth, bac and forth. she was eventually convicted, of course, and sentenc to life in prison. now, paul, you weren t directly involved with this case but you do have an interesting connection. you had conversatio with a private investigator that her husband robert hired, bause he feared for his life, correct? cayou tell us about wt this investigator found? well, it s very interesting. robert kissel, who was killed in thiscase, a goldman sachs financial trader, had a relationship with a guy named frank sh, a former new york city detective, one of a top investigators in new york and kissel called shea up and said, yoknow something, i thinky wife is trying to poison me. frank nt over to hong kong, and he was going to have tted a decante of scotch because he thought there might be drugs in it and he reatedly warned kiss that he thought kissel was, in fact, being poisoned shea also had surveillance done and found out tt mrs. kissel was having an affair. so there was motive for the killing. all rit. and so robert told the investigator that he feared for his life, a y that ironically was part of the testimony that led to the conviction being, at least, thrown out athis point, corrt? yes. i think lot of people will have a hard time with this. t there s a rule called the hearsay rule. and in this case, the deceased robert kissel says to frank shea, i think she s trying to kill me. i think she s trying to poison me. he also ys this to anoth person. that was introducedn evidenc before the jury. the high court in honkong said that s hearsa you can t cross-examine the deceased person. we don t think it s reliable evidence, the judge shod not have admitted it into evence. the jury nev should have known that robert kissel feared his wife was going to kill him. so they reversed the cviction based, at lea in part, on that mistake. andpaul, quickly, do you think we ll hear from nancy in this trial? oh, i think we definitely ll. and i think the prosecutor will come at her, maybe even in a stronger way on retrial because they now kno exactly what the defense is going to be. paul callen, thanks so much, appreciate it. niceo be with you, amy. well, i think it s a complete backlash to the shows like the hills. they re suosed to be reality shows. this is uber reality. people wanto see the grit. they wt to see the harsh realities of what it s like to actually be aeen mom. historically teen mothers have been marginalized by society. these rls are really putting a face on what it s like to be a teen mother and i think peopl are rivetedy the realities of their fe. harsh realities. but some critics say this also glamorizes teen pregnancy. i disagree. i ink the show is an unvarnished warts and all look at what it s like to be a teen ther. i think it s a great cautionary tale. that said think there s a whole celebrity cottage industry th s been built around this show right now. and stacy y re a therapist whs worked with teen moms. you find that the show is an accurate representatn of what it sruly like to be a teenage mother? i really do think it s an accuraterepresentation. what we re seeg is the struggles and relationships, the feeling that these girls are not going to be able to grow up as girls anymore. they have to be women. and that they re accounted with their extended families that s wt we see with teen parents in real life and that s what we re seeing on the show. one of the stars that has come out of this show, amber portwo, her behaviorn the show, however, at times was unbelievable. and that aspect was ofoncern to you at first. it really was a concern for me. because i was afraid that tt pect was going to be glamorized and that she wasn t going to be having consequences for it. so much as muc as i m sorry that a teenage girl is going through assault arges, and having her child taken away, i ink it paints a portrait of what really happens in real li. lola, what about this? so mh attention put on these young women now, like i said, number one in their time slot. are you concerned at all about what happens when the cameras go away? i am coerned. and i m concerned that they ll actually start to make even more bad choices to keep e spotlight on them. will they have more children? will they go out and commit more crimes or do things of that natu just because they think any headlines are better than no headlines at all. bad behavior is rewarded almost in this culture. across the board. it s allbout train wreck television. and teen mom 2 bins this week. you have two teenage daugers. would you let them watch that show? you know, it s not something i would advise people to say, assign your children to watch as educational tv. my girls watch it but i wch it with them if your kids are watching it you want to tal to them about it to make sure you re ansring questions and teaching them corrtly. stacy, did youant to say one other thin i would encourage pavtzs to watch it with their ildren. it s a great way to start the conversaon about teen sexuality, teen parenthood and all those thin. it s a littleifficult for pants to broach that conversation. this is a great way to g into it. lola, acy, thanks so much. up next, surviving the cold daysf winter. ty fine [ women ] pop-tarts happy sunshine time! hereith details on why it s different during the winter months is dr. susan taylor. good morning. obviously tside we know the humidity levels drop. what s happening inside? the same thing is happening inside. often our home heating systems, as well as the heang system at the office is very drying. it s producing dry air. so we lose moisture from our skin into the air. so what s the physiologil thing? what is happening that cses skin to srt fleshing and you get that ashy look? there s sething called transepidermal water loss that s loss of water through the skin. and what hpens is the ski cells become curd up, and that gives the fky appearance. we know thatumidity plays a big thing. at things are we doing aut it? theirst thing you want to do is put more humidity in the air. so a simple remedy is to purchase a humidifier. put it in the room that you spenmost of your time in if you don t want to goo the expense of buying a humidifier, plants are a quick and easy way of adding moisture to the air. so when we wer the plants, the wateriffuses through the ste to the leafs and into the envinment. they say plants around the office a also good because they look so great. and even more inexpensive is to put cups or ps of water throughout the room. you may ve, when you were a kid, you mom or grandmom would put them on a radiator. so it evaporates, again, putting moisture in the air and then our skin is less likely to lose its moisture into the air. what kind of moisturing productshould we ve?
