their fans are still celebrating franchise history. their fans are still celebrating today, monday, june 13th, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to today on a monday morning. i m matt lauer. i m ann curry. i m still here. let s talk about anthony weiner because he s expected to be a no-show on capitol hill as congress returns to work today despite increasing pressure he s refusing to step down but he did tell reporters over the weekend he would take a leave of absence. weiner said he will receive professional treatment during his time away. he was not very clear about what he needs help for. if so many members of congress want him to resign, can they actually force him out? we ll talk about that and get the latest on this scandal straight ahead. also ahead this morning, some new drama from the case say anthony trial. the defense is asking for a mistrial after jurors were shown a graphic image of anthony s daughter s caylee. we ll have details from this coming up. plus, this is a very special week here on today. al is in anchorage, alaska, for the start of lend a hand 2011. this is his tenth annual cross-country adventure where he helps deserving charities. he said lend a hand s biggest week this week, biggest week ever. check in with al coming up. all right. let s begin with the anthony oo weiner scandal. each day brings more photos and new calls for his resignation. luke, good morning to you. good morning, matt. even atsz more lewd photographs and they call on him to step down, congressman anthony weiner refused to resign saying, quote, he will take a temporary leave of absence to seek professional treatment. look, i ve made some serious mistakes here. i have to redeem myself and i m going to try to get back to work. these were personal failings. reporter: congressman anthony weiner refuses to resign, this weekend he announced he was going to take a leave of absence and check himself in for professional treatment. on move democratic leaders still insisted weiner step down. when he refused, they went public. democratic national committee. weiner s continued service in congress is untenable. his sorted affair has become a distraction from representative weiner, his family, his constituents, and the house. reporter: nancy weiner to se resign. quote, i urge congressman weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of congress. adding to the pressure, this weekend tmz.com published new suggestive photos of weiner at the capitol hill members gym that he allegedly sent to an unidentified woman. all that after he engaged in a correspondent with twitter with a 17-year-old high schoolgirl in delaware. police cleared weiner of the crime in that case saying, quote, there was no disclosure of criminal activity. despite all that democratic sources tell nbc news weiner will not make any further decisions about his political future until his wife returns from an overseas depositiiploma trip. meanwhile, protesters calling in his home office in queens although polls show he s still popular in his district. how do i know how many other things he s lied about? everybody s lied at some point. reporter: for the most part republicans have kept quiet about the scandal but during a commencement address at ohio state house speaker john boehner offered this. when you begin to go out there and ask people to vote for you they re probably not going to vote for you if they can t say your name. you know, my name looks like beaner, bonner, boner, thank god it s not weiner. reporter: and while many democrats wanted weiner to actually resign they re relieved he will not be here on capitol hill. i spoke to one democratic aide who said, quote, maybe now our policy will now get some media attention. luke, thanks so much. kelly o donnell is nbc s capitol hill correspondent. good morning to you. i ve got to ask you about this. congressman weiner s online behavior, shocking but as far as we know he s not done anything illegal. what options do nancy pelosi and other house leaders have to get rid of him since they want him to leave? it s very complicated because they can t force him to quit if he refuses to go. they have two tracks. there is the ethics investigation but that could take months. even if that eventually leaves to punishment it s unlikely it would include kicking him out of congress because he hasn t been accused or convicted of any crime. they really are trying to shame him out, taking a political approach. what they can do is with house members coming back, all the democrats can meet, they can take a couple of steps. they can decide together to say he should resign. they could strip him of his committee assignments. they could even kick him out of their caucus, exile him, make him much more difficult to be functioning here, much harder to survive and harder to serve his constituents. there s got to be a back story here in terms of why the dems are so united and not wasting time to push him out. politically they thought they gained traction on issues like medicare and all of that has been put aside. they feel they re getting no attention for that now. so they re using very strong words, bizarre, sorted, indefensible, in describing his conduct to push him out. they don t think there s enough time to recover politically. they feel he s taken up too much time, been too much of a distraction so they re trying to do everything they can to pressure him out even though so far that s not working. kelly o donnell this morning, thank you so much. another member of congress is in the headlines. new photos of gabrielle giffords released over the weekend, the first since she was shot in the head in january and she looks great. nbc s jay gray has this story. reporter: those pictures were taken here just a few weeks ago. they re the first clear images of gabrielle giffords since the attack and help to provide perhaps new perspective on her difficult recovery. her hair is shorter and darker, but her smile is as radiant as ever. these new photos of congresswoman gabby giffords were released sunday on her facebook page. in one she s alone, in the other she sits alongside her mother gloria. pictures, her staff says, of progress and giffords enduring strength. it is amazing to think that this woman was shot at point blank range in the head less than six months ago. i think the pictures really cap hur the congresswoman s resilience and her spirit and her determination. reporter: the pictures were taken last month by a tucson photographer just a day after giffords traveled to florida to see her husband head into space on board the shuttle endeavour. giffords close friend spoke to the congresswoman just last week. she spoke to me in full sentences, initiated those sentences instead of just responding, which is what she had only been able to do until recently. she s making remarkable progress. we re so proud of her. she s got a long way to go. reporter: but giffords aides have tempered optimism considering the severity of the brain injury. it s a very slow process. she suffered an injury that unfortunately leaves 95% of those inflicted with it dead. the fact that she s still recovering at the pace she is a really hopeful sign. reporter: doctors say the progress with this type of case is unpredictable. we really don t know how she s going to do long term. this is a hidden injury which really takes months to years to fully heal and to improve. so we really just don t know where she ll plateau at this point in ti reporter: giffords is rehabbing in houston to be closer to her husband mark who s back now from his shuttle flight. the congresswoman has plenty of support since the pictures have been posted, hunts have left messages on her facebook page. one wrote, gabby, you look amazing. god bless you, and keep your spirits high. another said, beautiful. you are such a testament to the human spirit. and the spirit in giffords that continues to push her recovery, in fact, doctors say if she continues to progress, she could transfer to an out-patient status here by the end of the month. ann, it s just been an amazing recovery. that s the next step. jay gray, thank you so much this morning. it is now 7:09. let s up stairs to matt. thank you very much. wall street is on a big losing streak with the dow opening below 12,000 today. it s fallen for six straight weeks. what does that mean for the economic recovery and your bottom line? jim cramer is the host of cnbc s mad money. i m going to be honest here, in the past when the dow has been down, we say it s a downward spiral. this is different. this is six weeks in a row where the numbers have fallen. should we be amping up the concern level a little bit? we ve only been down, seven-week period, three times. so, yes, we have to worry. this is very unusual. hasn t happened often. it is really a sign that the economy is slowing. when you look at some of the key economic numbers that have been coming out over the last month or six weeks or so, jobs numbers and housing numbers, and you ve schooled me in the past, those two numbers are very much related, is this more than a soft patch? no, i don t think it s more than a soft patch because i still think there are things that can go right. this is all approximate cause. gasoline going to $4. get gasoline back to $3.50, we restart things. gasoline is a dollar higher right now than it was this time last year, although the numbers have been going down a little bit in the last couple of weeks. give me a concrete example of why high gas prices, high oil prices are a drag on the economy. many fewer cars are bought. cars are a big part of the economy. retail sales go down. we are a service country. retail, restaurant,igantic part all slowing down. let s talk about jobs. let s be clear about this. the private sector is creating jobs. it s misinterpreted a lot of times. people are saying we are not creating jobs. we are but we re not creating enough jobs to keep the recovery going. and in particular, last month the numbers were disappointing. do you see something on the horizon that is going to spur on job growth? i think the things that we can count on are less united states sent tricentric. we need japan to get back online. the only thing that really involves the united states that could matter, debt ceiling resolution, some sort of reconciliation between democrats and republicans. when we talk about the debt ceiling, it s pretty clear it will be raised. but the question is, what comes out on the spending side to counter that. how much of an impact will the results of the debate in congress have on the economy? one of the reasons i don t want people to sell stocks is i think it could be dramatic. we are frozen in this country for a variety of reasons, including gasoline, but washington. you get any rest liolutionresol people are going to start hiring. resolution that shows what what? that looks like some toughness. there s got to be some sense that both the democrats and the republicans recognize the urgency of getting this country s fiscal house in order. you think they will respond? definitely. jim cramer, good to see you. check out mad money week nights at 6:00 and 11:00 eastern time on cnbc. let s get a check of the rest of the top stories. natalie, good morning to you. good morning to you, matt. 40 years after turning the first amendment into a battleground the formerly top secret pentagon papers are being released today. the leaked vietnam war report triggered a landmark supreme court ruling in favor of press freedom after an attempt to new york times. mitt romney will face off for the first time against six of his republican rivals in a 2012 republican presidential debate in new hampshire. meanwhile, president obama embarks on a two-day domestic trip to push for more jobs and boost his own political profile today. a strong series of earthquakes in christ church, new zealand, brought down two buildings today, including one of the few left standing after february s quake killed 181 people there. authorities say they have no reported injuries or deaths. some hope in arizona as officials say crews battling the massive wildfires there have made a breakthrough. nbc is in springerville, arizona. tom, good morning. reporter: good morning, natalie. there are more than 4,000 people fighting the wallow wildfire and this weekend they turned a corner. 10% is now contained. some evacuation orders have been lifted, including the one in this town. thousands of homes are still in danger now in two states. the wallow wildfire which has turned 440,000 acres in eastern arizona into a torch forest marches east threatening homes and residents in new mexico. firefighters cleared rows of trees and set containment fires to stop the wildfire from spreading. some arizona residents were forced to evacuate, were allowed back home sunday. and thousands still can t come home because their homes remain in danger. emergency management officials warned residents that returning home too soon means facing a health risk with the lingering sploek. on the outskirts of the blaze the job of fighting the wallow wildfire is done with controlled burns. but right inside, crews like the snake river hot shots worked to contain the fire and make sure new ones don t pop up. this elite group of firefighters have spent two weeks here working 16-day days. do you ever get scares? well, everyone gets scared. but hopefully with your training, you re able to get home safe. reporter: there are 24 hot shot crews spread throughout this wildfire which is now larger than the city of houston. and this morning there is a new wildfire burning in the southeast corner of arizona just south of us. that fire is now forcing people to evacuate as well. natalie? all right, tom llamas in spi springerville, arizona. the book of mormon was the star of the tony awards last night, winning nine statues. another big winner was neil patrick harris whose opening leave it to the underdogs, the dallas mavericks beat the miami heat to take their first nba title in franchise history, winning the series four games to miami s two. as for lebron james, his wait for a title will just go on into a ninth season. redemption though for miami s win back in 2006. matt and ann, i m sure you stayed up for that. i did not see it. my husband did. my son did. exciting game. i hear they re still celebrating in dallas. all the critics of the lebron thing are going to be, you know, jumping on the bandwagon. he made it to the nba finals and you get a feeling he s going to be back there many times. yeah. good series though. let s get a first check of the weather, as you mentioned al is out in anchorage, alaska, first stop in his tenth annual lend a hand tour. al, good morning again. hey, good morning, matt and ann. we are in anchorage. it is our tenth anniversary of lend a hand today where we do five cities, five charities, five days. and this year promises to be our biggest year ever. we are talking about giving out more than $9 million worth of goods and services. we re going to start off here in anchorage with our biggest day ever for lend a hand. we re talking about almost $1.9 million worth of goods and services in that truck and a whole bunch of other trucks. we ll tell you and reveal the very deserving charity in just a much cooler. lower humidity continuing to move in on a fresh northwest breeze. lots of sunshine now. temperatures are just in the low and mid-60s in washington the nearby suburbs, 50s in the north. later 70s, 80s, clouds around. more the same on tuesday, although chillier in the morning. on wednesday, more sun around. 50s in the morning, afternoon highs near 80. thursday, friday, satu and we ve got more from anchorage, alaska, it s a really exciting morning. now back to you, ann. we re all cheering you from here, al, thanks. now to the frustrating search for answers in the disappearance of a 20-year-old indiana university student. she vanished more than a week ago. so far police have little to go on. nbc john yang is in bloomington this morning. good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. it s now day 11 since lauren spierer disappeared after a night out with friends and hasn t been since day one, still no suspects, no hard leads as to her whereabouts. for a second week volunteers from as far as florida lined up outside lauren spierer s apartment building to join the search. somebody out there knows something. reporter: this group scoured a bloomington city park hoping to find some clue that will lead to her whereabouts. it s very frustrating. very sad. hope for a miracle at this point. reporter: lauren s case was featured on america s most wanted saturday, triggers at least 40 calls to the tip line but still police say there s been no breakthrough. we re very much in the information gathering stage of this. and certainly there are individuals that we want to speak with. reporter: for lauren s parents, it was another day of waiting. i think that we expect to find her and we hope that she s okay when we find her. i can t say that i m just sort of considering that she ll just pop up without us having to go find her. we want to thank all of our friends and family. reporter: a fashion student lawrence spierer shown here with her sister on an amateur video on a volunteer trip to israel over spring break, she was last seen about 4: 30 on the morning of friday, june 3rd, walking home after a night out with friends. her cell phone was found in a bar. her keys in a small coin purse along the street. otherwise, there s been no trace of her since. police have identified ten persons of interest, but they ve yet to talk to all of them and some have left town. nobody is under arrest. nobody is in custody. reporter: charlene spierer believes someone knows something about what happened to her daughter and pleads with them to come forward no matter what the consequences. this is not a game. this is not, you know, i misplaced my phone, i misplaced my this, i don t want to get in trouble. you know, we re missing lauren. it s really serious, and it s very imrtant. reporter: nationally known horseback search team is now here in bloomington talking to authorities about how they may be able to help. ann? i love my body. i m very comfortable with my body. i don t think that it s bad at all. i just know that it can be better. reporter: a model since she was 15, nicole says a little nip and tuck around her thighs which she considers to be her problem areas could really help her bottom line. i m getting older, so it s a lot of pressure to stay young, to stay fit, to stay thin, and to stay, you know, well put together because there s someone that s right behind you that wants your job just as badly. reporter: but it s not just for people who grace the covers of magazines. last year more than 200,000 people got liposuction. the majority of them, women. it seems like every other patient i m see for liposuction is a thin, fit patient. reporter: beverly hills surgeon says liposuction reproportions the body. it doesn t make someone skinny. somebody can be thin like nicole and have stubborn disproportioned areas of fat. and that can be a perfect candidate for liposuction. it s all about my role in terms of rebalancing her body. reporter: nicole is seeing him for a procedure called mini liposuction which targets one or two small areas. the surgery is far less invasive than traditional liposuction, and the whole procedure talks about an hour. i think you just have to watch out when you start fixing flaws that nobody but you can see you might end up with the kind of body you will never be happy with. reporter: cindy worries quick-fix solutions like mini liposuction re-enforce the idea that all women should try for perfection. you need to make sure that once you have the surgery you re not going to say any little flaw that crops up, i m going to fix that, too. reporter: any form is still surgery and continues to raise complicated questions about how far is too far for the search for beauty. for today, kristen welker, nbc news. dr. david emron who you just saw that in piece and she is a psychologist. welcome to both of you. they re thinking nicole is a beautiful young lady. she s the last person on earth who needs liposuction. is this a case of people who are going to just chase perfection too far? well, you know, there are so many misunderstandings of liposuction as surgery. it s not to do with overweight or out of shape. it s not weight loss. no. weight loss is the patient s responsibility. my responsibility is to balance the person s body. nicole is a thin person, in shape. she has a disproportionate areas that she struggles with. are you comfortable with this? she has genetically disproportionate areas. is this the same thing as whitening your teeth? i m a big teeth whiter in. but as a psychologist when i have a patient who wants to go get liposuction or mini liposuction we have to talk about psychological factors that are in there. is it a quest for perfection? we look at that, because as you heard, it s a slippery slope. is it a quest for happiness? which should be done somewhere outside of a surgeon s office. maybe in addition to the surgery. is it an event or is it an age that is making you go in for the surgery? so once you ve talked about all that, if you want to go in and get that one little problem area done, it s not a bad idea. do you tend to see people like nicole over and over again? in other words, once they get that the one little area done, is it off to the next little area? well, possibly. i mean, people have to do things for the right reasons. and when i identify a patient who is doing things to replace some sense of internal happiness, i m concerned about things. no external thing is going to necessarily make somebody happy. it s not a shortcut to happiness. it s going to come somewhere someplace else. would you say no to someone? if you get the hint and a red flag goes up and this is about trying to win back that guy as opposed to just being more comfortable in your body, would you say no, i don t want to do this procedure? well, i m a technician. you know, if i see somebody is a candidate and i feel that liposuction is going to make an improvement, i will probably want to do the surgery. but i also want to make sure they re in the right mindset of things and not use it to replace some sense of internal happiness. i have to understand exactly what the outcome isexactly. it s going to change your body. it s not going to change your personality or your life. i might be the person saying no, until you fix this psychological theme, you shouldn t go in for the liposuction. once you do and you still want it, go ahead. new york times had an article about liposuction. they focus and a study that says if you gain weight after liposuction will redistribute to other parts of the body. is it possible that you maintain the flat stomach but gain it in other areas? fell on her head. recently she achieved an amazing milestone and she s not done yet. we re going to talk to both her and her husband in just a moment. but first, here s nbc s norah o donnell. reporter: sue is learning to play the drums, not for the first time, but for the second time in her life. i was a drummer before. reporter: when sue talks about before, she means before that freak accident 23 years ago. sue was cooking dinner and playing with her 6-month-old son patrick. she grabbed him underneath the shoulders and picked him up. his back struck a low ceiling fan in our kitchen with enough force to knock it off its hook. the fan fell, struck sue in the temple. reporter: what sue s husband jim saw next was changed her life forever. it was out of a horror movie. she collapsed on the floor. lots of blood. called 911. they asked was my wife braet breathing. i said i didn t know. reporter: doctors at the hospital said there was nothing they could do. i was told to go get my son, to come back, and to say good-bye. how did that make you feel? i was i was terrified. reporter: still, sue was young and physically fit, and she hung on in a coma for a week until she finally woke up. nothing less than miraculous. reporter: but doctors soon realized there was something terribly wrong. all of her ability to have short-term memory was gone. reporter: in fact, all of her memories erased, a diagnosis called advanced retrograde amnesia. so severe, sue didn t even recognize her own two young boys. did you recognize them? i don t i don t think so. reporter: sue had to relearn everything, how to walk, talk, eat, read and write. sue and jim, once college sweethearts, had to fall back in love. are you in love with a different person than you first were in love with? oh, yes. no question. how is she different? she s she s a much kind of person than she was then. reporter: a changed woman, sue spent the next two decades struggling with the sense of identity. i was a parent. i was a wife. there was no i didn t have any thing by myself. reporter: so sue went back to school, graduating from montgomery college in may. susan mack with honors. nfin fact, you liked it so mh you re going to keep going to school. i was. i was accepted at smith college. reporter: a remarkable journey for a woman who lost cherished memories, but in turn, has created a new life and a new sense of self. for today, norah o donnell, nbc news. and our success story joins us this morning with her husband. sue mack along with jim. good morning to both of you. good morning. so, first of all, with honors? uh-huh. that s the way to roll. yes. and in your case, you re the only one who really remembers what happened 23 years ago. so what i m wondering is, what is it that doctors say actually happened when the ceiling fan hit your wife? the way they described it was that the blow struck her temple, her brain struck the front of her skull and bounced off the back. in a classic, at that time, traumatic brain injury. sheering of brain tissue. they described it as if you have a bowl full of jello and you take it out of the ridge and you shake it, there s cracks. that s what she had in her head. remarkably, your son patrick was unscathed. he was fine. in your case, you couldn t remember. what was not remembering like? i think it was fear more than anything. i don t actually remember being in the hospital but if i think back to that time i think it feels like fear and frustration and anger and, you know, all those kind of emotional things. so i guess that was probably it was scary. yeah. very scary. scary, too, for you. you were just 24 years old. two little boys. here your wife doesn t know who you are, doesn t know your voice. this had to be just so devastating for you. so how did you find the way to reach out to her and make a relationship again? she was the mother of my children. she was the mother of my sons. i couldn t do anything else. yeah. and did you have to take her out again? oh, yes. did you have to buy her flowers and take her to the movies? what did you do? i was her caretaker and looked at her. i was more of a big brother. you don t kiss your big brother. no, no. so it took a while. what do you think was the thing that really helped you in the end make peace with what had happened? probably just this past year, just starting to talk about it again. i went back to school starting in 2007, and i was active at my school. i was, you know, an officer in ptk, which is phi beta kappa, officer, so that really put me like that was my thing. like i could do this by myself. so life goes on. and what would you say above all one learns from this kind of trauma, this kind of fear, this kind of no matter what happens, just never never give up. even if you can t see it, even if you can t know how you re probably going to get through it, give it a chance and don t lose hope. don t lose hope. what about for you, su? i guess people should be, you know, more looking out for themselves, not in like a selfish way but there s more to being a wife and mother than being just a wife and mother. you have to be your own person, too. right. you had to go and find yourself. right. and it was here you are emerging. and it was very confusing to me because everybody was telling me who i was before. and that wasn t who i am now. so it was almost leak it was a different i m a different person. it was confusing. who you are now is remarkable. soon you re going to be a smith graduate. you must be so proud. i m so glad to meet both of sometimes glows. the ice age kind of hard to leave. so if you are looking for someone to help underserved children in anchorage you would want them to be larger than life, you know, tall, maybe 6 6 and big like 300 pounds, but muscular, and they have long, flowing black hair, just for flare. he would be a super hero, except he s real. the moto,si, founder and director of alaska pride, an organization committed to helping children and young adults reach their potential. basically any options kids love all together is what we use as a tool to teach leadership and confidence. reporter: his magic with the kids and a chief crusader for their dreams. and he uses dance, art, music, or whatever they love best to motivate them to achieve. if you ve got a talent or a skill, he s willing to try to provide the vehicle and the stage for you to get it done. reporter: he works to show them that no deed is too small to make a difference. if i can just give someone a meal or a t-shirt or a dollar, you never know how important that dollar is for that one child. reporter: you see, he just cares. he is is a mow want but grew up in has a. he ran the streets as a teenager but managed to stay out of trouble. oh, yeah, he is a sports legend. he got drafted by the arizona cardinals, a dream come true. but he got hurt. career ender. all of a sudden, he was broke and lost. i look back on my life and realized that i screwed up somewhere. this is when i was sitting with my newborn son. you know, i was looking at him, i said, man, every where that your dad screwed up, you won t. reporter: it s about family for him. he has five kids, but looking out for just them wasn t enough. and so alaska pride was born. it s housed in a tiny corner of an anchorage mall. and just like him, inside its doors you find the unexpected. meet junior. i met junior at my old facility about three years ago. he was sleeping in my space. i actually caught him singing. and it was beautiful. he said, well, if the barbecue. one of my favorites. we re going make some ribeye in a second. morgan leigh, i ve known you for 15 years. you ve always loved the kitchen. i think it was as soon as i left home and had to go off on my own i realized how important that family dinner is at the end of the day. i missed it. so i started cooking for myself and my friends. i just fell in love with it and continued on with it. we re going to make a recipe your dad knows. i know he loves. this is ribeye steak. why the you love this cut of meat? the marbling gives you the flavoring. cut like this medium rare, put it on what morgan is preparing here, it brings out the dpflavo do you put it on the grill basically, do you put any seasoning on it? depends on how i m cooking it. if i codo a ribeye like this, no seasoning. a little bit of salt but most of the time i do not. i let the individuals do that themselves. after you cook it you slice it up because it s going to go on top of something. a little bit of an unusual preparation. morgan leigh, tell me about it. because the steak is so heavy and we like to eat light we do a fresh spinach and light tomato and potato sauce. talk to me. what s in here. russet potatoes? yeah. we just quartered up and saute in a little butter and olive oil. i then add the tomatoes. i like the mix of red and yellow because you eat with your eyes first and foremost. bring a lot of color into it. i add a little bit of thyme and chopped basil. lastly, a little bit of balsamic vinegar and a little bit of white wine vinegar. you simmer but for not long. you like it because it s quick to make. fresh and quick. we don t want to spend too much time in the kitchen cooking because we want to spend time together so we make light dishes and easy dishes. this goes on top of the spinach and the steak on top of that? yeah. you can plate that. you were making red meat but through your playing years, you ve been known for nutrition and fitness. you do allow yourself to splurge, though. i do. you know one thing that i used to do when i played in the mornings is to have steak and eggs for breakfast. before going out on the course? because i never had lunch. you tee off around 1:00, i needed to have something to last me through the day so i started eating steak and eggs. you re going to put the ribeye on top of that. one of the nice things about you is you don t station has been evacuated due to a bomb threat. dan, tell us what you can about this bomb threat. this all started shortly before shortly after 7:30 when apparently a female customer aboard a metro train was exiting, made some sort of threat that passengers interpreted as a bomb threat or threat of an explosive device. metro police are on the scene investigating that. we have canine units and detectives on the scene there. rockville station is temporarily closed, also shady grove is having a bus substitution route. we re offering buses at shady grove and rockville. it s affecting the entire red line. if you are taking the red line this morning, you do want to plan some extra time into your commute. dan, was that woman exiting a train and is she in custody now? i don t have any of those details just yet. obviously it s a very active police investigation. we will have updates throughout the morning and we ll be happy to pass that along as we get more. the investigation continues and police are on the scene at the metro station? that s correct. detectives on the scene, canine units investigating. a train partially at the station as you can see on your screen, so police are sweeping through that train as well to make sure there is no threat. so far we found nothing but obviously we re operating in an abundance of caution. at this point, have you made arrangements for your passengers to get around this delay? we have brought in shuttle buses for both rockville and shady grove stations to shuttle customers to where red line trains are operating. right now there are several shuttle buses making that trip, but customers at rockville and shady grove will want to allow a lot of additional time because the shuttle bus operation does take a bit longer. at this point there s no way to know how many minutes or how many delays you re going to expect this morning as the investigation is continuing? it s difficult to quantify. it will depend on which station. if you re a red line customer at any of the stations between twin brook all the way back around to glen mars it won t be the same as rockville or shady grove. okay. so at this point, though, no word on whether or not this woman why this woman may have made the threat or who she is, anything like that? we don t have any of those details yet because it s such a very absentive police investigation. dan with metro, thank you so much for joining us. we ll check in with you in just a bit. again, rockville metro station has been evacuated to a bomb threat. a female passenger who was exiting the train at the rockville station or platform made some sort of threat and other passengers alerted police. there s an active crime investigation at this point. so far investigators have not found any explosive devices. let s go to jake. he was on one of the trains evacuated at the shady grove station. jake, are you there? i m here. can you hear me? yes. jake, thanks for joining us. tell us what happened? i got in about 7:50, parked my car, got on one of the trains. typically shady grove, the end of the red line, sometimes the trains sit there for a little while while people get on. it was a little longer than normal. they came on the pa system and said there was a emergency situation in rockville and we would be delayed a little bit. people continued to sit there. they came back on three or four minutes after that and said it s a serious situation and this train won t be going anywhere. there s going to be shuttle buses for people to take you, i guess, to twin brook. at that point, everybody just left the trains and started kind of a mass exit of the station. still people coming in, trying to let those pem those people, the shuttle bus i got back in my car and decided to drive back downtown for work. it was pretty orderly. everybody got off the train and moved along. and jake, tell me about your reaction when they said that, okay, this isn t just a delay. this is an emergency situation. well, you know, it was because we were a couple of stations removed and weren t right there. wasn t any sense of panic. at first you obviously unfortunately in these times you think, i hope it s not something really serious. actually, there was a gentleman across from me who was on his iphone and he got off and said it was a bomb threat. they didn t say bomb threat on the p.a. system. but he said there was a bomb threat in rockville. you don t like to have hopes like that, hope it s some sort of prank and not something real, because obviously that is scary. right. jake, you mentioned it seemed the passengers were pretty much orderly. did you see was there any sort of worry or panic, crowds trying to rush out of the trains when you were there? not at shady grove. it was really calm. i think people were more just kind of thinking oh, great. now i m going to be late for work or i m going home. i heard someone say i m going to go work from home. everybody was just a little more just a little annoyed that they had to go out of their way and they were probably going to be late for work. everybody just kind of took it in stride. there was no panic at all. nobody was rushing out. everybody decided they had to make some tweaks to their day. jake, how long were you delayed in terms of getting to work today? i m still going, so i probably would have been in about a quarter to 9:00 and it s about 9:00. i probably won t be in for another 20 minutes. i m probably a good 45 minutes, depending on traffic here, maybe even de los an hour probably about 35 minutes late. but i just fired off an e-mail and let people know about the situation. yeah, it s definitely taking a little chunk out of my day. jake, thanks so much for joining us this morning to student loans, credit cards, of course. then it will suggest other deals for you, other loans that might be beneficial. what i like about this is because it s checking your credit score, it s not other than saying this individual is a person of interest, we don t have any further information about this individual, but the fact the police detained her indicates she may have had something to do with the disruption this morning. from our chopper, we can see that there are long lines to get on some of these shuttle buses. tell us about the delays this caused and disruptions. sure. the most significant delays were for customers who normally get on at either shady grove or rockville. that s because we ve had to substitute buses for shuttle buses at rockville. we ve been work throughout this rush hour to provide as many shuttle buses as possible. obviously that s a challenge whenever something like this happens in the rush hour because those buses are used for normal bus service. but we have been doing our best, trying to provide as many buses as possible. hopefully if rail service is restored here in the next few minutes, those people you see waiting in line for the shuttle buses will be able to make their way back and take a normal red line bus now. that s what we re focusing on now. sometimes during communication people complain there isn t enough communication and they don t know what s going on. how did you tell your passengers about this in order to get them off in an orderly fashion. the best advice for u.s. cans is to sign up for metro alerts, ealerts from metro to be notified on your cell phone whenever something like this happens. we ve also been communicating with customers in both directions on twitter. that s @metro open doors on twitter. keeping you guys up to date and having the broadcast, tv and radio stations get the word out for us as well. all of that seems to have gone pretty well this morning. obviously we acknowledge it s been a challenging morning for many red line customers and we thank them for their patience and understanding. did this disrupt any other service on any other lines and cause any other delays as a result of what was happening at the metro station? thomas church, fifth avenue, has a choir, has the only choir school in eager speaking world, apart from our own, that just dedicates to boys in the choir. this was grad wrauation ceremond i gave an address. then i preached for pentecost yesterday for the church. what an honor for you to be able to do that. we have to turn our attention to the royal wedding because everybody is still talking about it. we still are celebrating in it. and i think relishing every moment. as the dean of westminster abbey, you conducted the service. you have the most incredible vantage point. i think all of us were looking for a little hiccup, a little something to go not as planned. was there anything that happened like that? the team had worked really hard. the abbey team and the palace team and everyone working together. the intention was just to visit every possible thing that could go wrong and how can we make sure it doesn t go wrong. only 2 billion people watching, after all. no pressure. you have to say, 2 billion. you have no idea. you can t look at 2 billion, you can t imagine it so you just have to concentrate on the people. in a sense it was a very intimate and wonderful occasion. i think the couple themselves did everything absolutely right. they thought very hard about how exactly they were going to do it, which way they would move, who would go as it were first and which hand they would walk with and so on. when they were moving, for example, over to the chairs at the side, moving forward to the prayer desk, all of that was thought through. there was a moment, though, where the music and the entrance of the queen, you were unsure if they were going to play it on queue, right? yes. this was the only thing from my point of view. i had worked out with the bride and her father exactly what would happen, pippa would give me a nod after she arranged her de dress and i would turn and the music start. i had not done that arrangement with the organist about the queen s arrival which, of course, was an hour earlier. i was looking towards the queen and talking to the queen, prince of wales, duchess of cornwell there. i was waiting for the music to start behind me and i think they were waiting for me to turn. a little moment of panic perhaps. and all is well. tell me about the couple themselves. you said very intimate. something they planned themselves. very much putting their personal touches in. were they nervous though? i mean, did you get a sense? you could kind of see a little bit of nerves. i think nerves are not things to be afraid of. i think people would inevitably feel slightly nervous. i felt slightly nervous. how could you not feel slightly nervous on an occasion of that kind, such an historic moment. as for them, after all, this is a wedding. here is the great sort of royal ceremony, national ceremony and all of these people watching. not just any wedding. it means a lot. it s about this couple committing to each other throughout their lives, asking for the blessing of got on their marriage together. it s a special, very special moment. and i think they were nervous. they didn t show it in a very positive way. but i got the sense that they were. and now, we embrace them. everybody in britain seems to be completely enamored. how long do you think it will last, people loving their royals? they do. they should grow into a beautiful fern. going to get those sauteing up. all they need is probably just a little bit of salt right there. while those are cooking up, how do you prepare just what i did is i took the elk and this is the nice tender back strap cut. and i rolled it in a marinade. i used spruce tips which are right here. and again, these are the tendril pieces. the spruce tree? that was very reassuring. i knew it was funny to my friends, my friends are a particular kind of group. so when we saw that level of approval across the country, i think that was the moment we said, this could be big. there s no frustration like that when you are just exhausted it s over for you and they want another story, they want, tell me, read another book. right. so you can read them all kinds of books, excepp yours? yeah. we re reading in the notes that book can be turned into a movie. how on earth is this going to be a movie. how? do you need me to get those? no, i m good. i m excited to see how it becomes a movie. there s some great people involved, three arts entertainment is producing it. and it will be expanded. you knoww it will be longer than the book. it has to be. otherwise the movie would be like four minutes long. and it would be adam sandler or somebody playing, are you going to be in t?
