WRC Today September 13, 2011

bystanders rushed in, lifting the two-ton car just high enough to free him. remarkable rescue today, tuesday, september 13, 2011. r captions paid for by nbc-universal television this is matt lauer and ann curry. good morning, welcome to today on a tuesday morning. i m matt lauer. good morning. m savannah guthrie, ann is on assignment where overnight she spoke exclusively with iran s president mahmoud ahmadinejad that s making headlines. josh fatale and shane bauer, two americans given eight-year prison sentences for spying and entering iran illegally could be released in days. of course, that s welcome news for their families who have been on an emotional roller coaster. ann will have the latest live from tehran. tapes that offer a rare glimpse into the personal life of jacqueline kennedy. this morning the former first lady opens up about her marriage and one of the most trying events for this country and her husband s presidency and at one point a 3-year-old john f. kennedy, jr., interrupts his mother during those recordings and we ll hear that as well. also, she took some heat after being caught on an open microphone publicly voicing her hate for hydrangeas. we ll show you that coming up. on this tuesday morning we begin with ann s exclusive interview with iran s president mahmoud ahmadinejad and word that the american hikers detained in tehr tehran, in a tehran prison, could be freed very soon. ann is in tehran with the details. i know you spoke with that president about a wide range of subjects, but this is the topic that s making the headlines. talk to me about it. reporter: you re absolutely right, matt. good morning. the president in a 45-minute interview basically told us in response to a question that he personally has organize the release of the two remaining american hikers, talking about josh fattal and shane bauer. he said it will happen, in his word, in a couple of days as a humanitarian gesture. he talked about what he said were a number of iranians that were being held in american prisons and he was clearly talking about the need for the united states to step up and release iranians. we can also tell you the families of these two american hikers have said that they are hopeful upon hearing this news that about the words you are now about to hear from iran s president. many americans want to know how it could be that iran could sentence the two young hikers, josh fattal and shane bauer, to eight years in prison? for spying. what is the evidence against them? translator: they illegally crossed our borders, and they were arrested by the border guards, but we tried last year to free one of the three persons, and we are also trying to make arrangement for their freedom, for the freedom of the other two. i think these two persons will be freed in a couple of days. in a couple of days? translator: yes. in a couple of days. they will be free, but let me ask a question. are they really the problem? you know how many iranians are now in the american jails? there are hundreds. it s not about only two people in iran. these two people are having the very good conditions here in prison. it s like staying in a hotel. i think the problem is in the approach of the american politicians and leaders. why the american leaders are so hostile against us. okay. these two persons will be released. it is going to be over. we do it, for example, in a humanitarian gesture. is it going to solve the problems? i hope so. just on monday the head of the international atomic energy agency announced plans to publish new information that he says shows that iran may be working on a nuclear warhead. he said he is, quote, deeply concerned. is iran working on a nuclear warhead? translator: this is an old and repeated story. first of all, we are against nuclear weapons because it is against our beliefs and ideology. then simply put, is your answer no? translator: we do not need nuclear weapons and we do not accept that. we are against that. so, but to the question is iran building nuclear warheads, is the answer yes or is it no, with all due respect? we do not need it. what is our need to do it? so your answer is no. translator: that s right. certainly. in our interview two years ago you said about president obama i very much hope that the gentleman will move toward fundamental change and we are waiting for those changes to come about. what is your message to president obama today? translator: president obama was in the presidential elections and he had some slogans and we weren t happy about it, but many people were disappointed. i ask you and the people of the united states to what expect they hope about real reforms by him. what has changed the united states? what policies? did they change policies in afghanistan or iraq or in the hostility against iran? what has changed, really? reporter: while criticizing both the united states and also britain, the president ahmadinejad also made it clear he is looking for improved relations with the west. he ll be speaking on the world stage before the u.n. general assembly in 11 days and we ll have more of our interview on nbc nightly news and posted online in it s entirety. we look forward to that, ann. thank you very much. it is now eight minutes after the hour. here s savannah. matt, thanks. presidential hopeful rick perry found himself on the defensive during last night s fiery gop debate. among those who went after him, congresswoman michele bachmann. we ll talk to her in a moment. chuck todd has the latest. good morning, savannah. seven of the republican candidates made it clear who their front-runner is. the tea party debate turned into a texas bashfest. the people who are on social security today need to understand something, slam dunk guaranteed, that program is going to be there in place. reporter: front-runner rick perry began his second-ever presidential debate trying to reassure seniors his ponzi scheme comments about social security were taken out of context. it has been called a ponzi scheme by many people long before me, but no one s had the courage to stand up and say here is how we re going to reform it. the question is do you still believe that social security should be ended as a federal program as you did six months ago when your book came out? i think we ought to have a conversation we re having that right now, governor. we re running for president. i ll finish this conversation. i think those types of thoughtful conversations with america rather than trying to scare seniors like you re doing and other people, it s time to have a legitimate conversation in this country. governor, the term ponzi scheme is what scared seniors. reporter: unlike last week, romney wasn t alone in going after perry. michele bachmann hammered the texas governor for his support of statewide vaccinations against girls 12 and over against causing cervical cancer. to force 12-year-old little girls to have a government vaccination is flat-out wrong. at the end of the day this is about trying to stop a cancer. you may criticize me about the way i went about it, but at the end of the day i am always going to err on the side of life. reporter: bachmann also questioned whether a campaign contribution from a drug company influenced perry s decision. there s a big drug company that made millions of dollars because of this mandate. the company was merck, and it was a $5,000 contribution that i had received from them. if you re saying that i can be bought for 5,000, i m offended. i m offended for all the little girls and the parents that didn t have a choice. that s why i m offend, sir. it didn t get easier for perry when the issue of immigration came up as the crowd let him know that they didn t like the policy to give tuition to mexican immigrants. no matter how you got in, from the standpoint if your parents brought you there or what have you. think the american way is not to give taxpayer subsidized benefits to people who have broken our laws or are here in the united states illegally. that is not the american way. . reporter: it was that kind of night for perry. it wasn t just from romney and bachmann, santorum jumped in. ron paul hit him. even john huntsman tried, though, a couple of his jokes or barbs fell flat including one that was an odd troefrns kurt cobain. other than that, these guy ss gather again next week. thank you very much. gop presidential hopeful and minnesota congresswoman michele bachmann is with us from tampa, florida. congresswoman bachmann, good morning, nice to have you here. good morning, matt. thanks for having me on. it s our pleasure. going into last night s debate, political analysts said you in particular needed to throw some punches and made some waves to get your campaign back on track. we heard some of your questions for governor perry. did you accomplish that? i think that the debate last night showed the distinctions between the candidates and what i was trying to do is let people know also what my positive agenda is for moving the economy forward and job creation, in particular with the jobs plan that president obama just put forward. we ll hear more and more of those distinctions. you will talk about jobs in a second, but do i want to stick on this con frtroversy in texas mandating vaccinations for hpv for girls as young as 12. you not only question the policy, but you questioned the motivation behind it suggesting rather strongly that this could have been an attempt to appease a big drug company, merck, because they contributed to his campaign. so i want you to lay this out for me. is that what you are asserting? well, it s very clear that crony capitalism could have likely been the cause because the governor s former chief of staff was the chief lobbyist for this drug company. this was an issue that could have gone before the legislates you are, but rather than putting it before hearings and before legislature the governor chose by himself, unilaterally, to sign an executive order and put through the requirement that all innocent little 12-year-old girls or 11-year-old girls in the state of texas would be forced by the government to take an injection of what could potentially be a very dangerous drug. do you feel he placed the health and safety of young girls in the state of texas behind or below the need for campaign funds? i will tell you that i had a mother last night come up to me here in tampa, florida, after the debate. she told me that her little daughter took that vaccine, that injection, and she suffered from mental retardation thereafter. it can have very dangerous side effects. the mother was crying what she came up to me last night. i didn t know who she was before the debate. this is a very real concern and people have to draw their own conclusions. do you think that you re going to continue to hammer away on this subject? do you think there s traction to be found here? i think that this was traction with a lot of people and we ll see what people say about this, but again, it s drawing a very real distinction that you can t abuse executive authority with executive orders because there could be very negative consequences that the american people have to pay, and again, there is no second chance for these little girls if there are any dangerous consequences to their bodies or for their parents. on the subject of job creation, part of your solution is to cut corporate taxes, kill certain regulations and repeal wall street reform. on the last two there, was there high unemployment before health care reform and wall street reform were ever voted on. why do you think that s so important? where are the jobs there? well, we know from the nonpartisan congressional budget office, their estimate is that over 800,000 jobs will be lost as a result of the government takeover of health care otherwise known as obamacare. that s a very real number, 800,000 jobs lost, and i can verify that when i m going from business to business to business. job creators tell me that they re holding back on hiring because the cost of obama care are so high. i also talked to a number of people in the financial services industry on the dodd-frank bill and they tell me also they re not hiring because of the dodd-frank bill. in particular banks are telling me they re closing big branch banks and letting people go. these bills aren t without job losses. in just the 15 seconds i have left, when you run for president you promised people a brighter future, so if you were lucky enough to be elected president the unemployment rate right now of 9.1%. what would it stand after a year of a bachmann administration. what can you promise? i can tell you what i would do to bring it down and that, of course, the marketplace would have to prevail, and i would bring in money that s been earned overseas into the united states by having a 0% repatriation tax. there s 1.2 trillion in money that we can wash across the united states tomorrow if we would have the 0% tax rate, and then i want to permanently bring those jobs back to the united states by lowering the tax on job creators. that s the very first step because we need permanent solutions in the private sector, not temporary government fixes. congresswoman michele bachmann. congresswoman bachmann, thanks for your time this morning. i appreciate it. thanks, matt. let s get a check of the rest of the news stories. tamron hall is at the news desk. good morning. nbc news has obtained exclusive information about just how weak al qaeda has become this as the terror network released a 9/11 anniversary video more than a day late. jim miklaszewski has the latest for us. it does seem a little odd that it would release the tape a day and a half after 9/11. nevertheless it includes a video from osama bin laden himself from the grave. a cope was obtained. al qaeda s new number one, ayman al zawahiri who is attempting to rally al qaeda central in the wake of bin laden s death, but a senior u.s. intelligence official tells nbc news that zawahiri now is constantly on the run. that he s just trying to stay alive and he has no hand in any al qaeda operations. nevertheless, the officials warn that al qaeda cells, particularly in yemen still remain a serious threat, but al qaeda central itself is, quote, shattered. what s telling about this tape is that intelligence officials actually had a copy of the tape more than a week before 9/11, but it took al qaeda this long to get it out, tamron. what does this new information mean for the terror alert issued over the weekend and on the 9/11 anniversary? u.s. officials have now questioned 300 individuals. they have found no evidence, hard evidence of an official plot to attack on 9/11. when he thought of an attack it was way too late to launch a sophisticated attack that would induce or result in mass casualties. one more thing. this new violence in kabul. a targeted attack on the u.s. embassy. what are you hearing about that? seconds was joined by a group of five. together, a collective lift, but the car wouldn t budge. the victim was stuck, the bmw still burning. it was very hot. just hot and it can be dangerous. reporter: with time ticking away in the sense of panic setting in, the woman checked again on the victim and suddenly a unified push. a group of roughly a dozen both men and women rushed in. together they lifted the 4,000-pound car. get out, someone grab him. this man pulled out the victim. brandon wright was alive, a miracle he survived. the rescuers, did a great job of getting him the help that witness at the jail said the daughter was justc tryi g to cheer up her dad. once the jury is selected in ward s second-degree murder trial it will hear two versions of how his wife diane ward died last year. authorities claim ward shot and killed her and then called 911 saying i just shot my wife. she s dead. at the time police said it was cut and dry. it s a very sifrmel case and pretty much in the call said he shot his wife and left her and she could be found in the bedroom and that s pretty much that s what we found when we got on the scene. reporter: the death occurred at this mansion near orlando, an exclusive neighborhood once home to tiger woods and other celebrities. reports at the time said ward was facing bankruptcy and the home was in foreclosure. homicide. reporter: chief medical examiner jan garavaglia, known as dr. g. on her reality show noted the angle of the shot were inconsistent with suicide. that was the most important evidence that will present be in the case. reporter: bob ward said the shooting was not a homicide. it was an accident, and i will tell you more about it later, but, you know, it was a very tragic accident. reporter: in a jailhouse phone call ward said his wife shot herself as he struggled to take away her handgun. diane killed herself tonight. i had nothing to be worried about other than i was trying to get the gun out of her hand. reporter: soon to be announced is what prosecutors believe could be the motive for a murder in a case where bob ward s behavior and that of his family after his arrest raised plenty of eyebrows. reporter: earlier, defense attorneys had asked the judge to rule that those video tarngs those jailhouse videotapes could not be shown in the trial, but the prosecutor said there was no need for such a ruling saying they have no intention of ever showing those videos to the jury in this murder trial, matt? mark potter in orlando this morning. mark, thank you very much. let us now get a check of he s gone to heaven. he s gone to heaven? yeah. do you remember him? what do you remember? i remember i don t remember anything! reporter: there are also intimate glimpses of the kennedy marriage. she describes what she calls his childish mannerism of kneeling on the edge of the bed to say his nightly prayers. it was sweet, she said. it amused her. the president wept in his bedroom after the bay of pigs and you can hear the echoes of desperation in her voice her calling the possibility of being evacuated and separated from him during the cuban missile crisis. i said please, don t send me away to camp david. please don t send me anywhere. even if there s no room in the bomb shelter in the white house, please, i just want to be with you. and i want to die with you and the children do, too, and don t want to live without you. reporter: she said she viewed her role as creating a climate of affection and comfort for her husband and that she got all her opinions from him. very different from the jackie kennedy heard elsewhere in the tapes. a woman with strong political opinions of her own. the book and the tape add another chapter to the kennedy legacy and in some ways new mystery. how jacqueline kennedy fits into history based on a time capsule that she left behind. savannah? andrea mitchell, thanks. chris matthews is the host of msnbc s hardball and author of the upcoming book jack kennedy, elicit hero. i know you re a kennedy buff and studied the family extensively. i wonder what strikes you about these tapes and jacqueline kennedy as we hear her all these years later? jackie really loved jack kennedy not just as her husband, but as a man. she could see past the glamour and the amazing sexuality. the guy would walk in the room. she nicknamed him magic because he would walk in the room and the women would swoon and the men would do anything he asked them to, and she could see past that to the kid who had grown up sick, who had been lonely. she did say on the record at one point his mother never loved him. he was very much a lonely guy, a loner and she called him an elusive man and she saw beyond the glamour. we see another side of jacqueline kennedy in the tapes, don t we? she s got the soft voice, but boy, a sharp tongue. i always knew that about her. she could be wicked. if you could ever have gotten tapes of them at bed time when they were listening to the record player at night and talking about the people they dealt with that day. i came across a letter jack wrote to her about a party he d gone to that she wasn t at up in rhode island. it s devastating in the way they discuss these people and she s the same way. these tapes are going to be fun to read. iy think they re a great look at history. jackie could see in the more compartments of jack s life than most people. she could see the glamour guy, the sexy guy. she could also see the dreamer and idealist. they were both there in jack. she comes across as very loyal to her husband. she certainly doesn t describe failings or short comings. right. obviously, she knew that these tapes would not be released until after her death, but i don t know if your eyebrows were raised that she said she got all of her political opinions from jack. michael, the historian, said we should take that with a warehouse of salt. this is 50 years ago, and she was victorian in the sense that after dinner the men would go into another room and smoke cigars and have cognac and the women would go into another room and one of the other tapes that she did with teddy wright right after jack died, that john john would now be lost to the men and they would work their relationships with other women with the wives not knowing about it and she only had caroline. she really lived in the divided world where the men were running the show. you have to remember when this was. it wasn t a time of equal marriages and equal power, if you will, and certainly not equal power. at the same time i know you believe there s no way she wasn t aware of those stories of philandering and some of that bad behavior by her husband. how could she not be? she was a smart person, very smart, as you will see in these tapes and she was aware of jack. right the day she was married, jack s closest friend went to her and said you know, this guy is a 36-year-old bachelor. he s not going change and here she is a 22-year-old woman and she had to get used to him. she was warned about jack from the day of their marriage and of course, her own father was a philanderer. i think this woman was astounding in her love for jack. as i said, she saw him not just as her husband, but as a man. on every level she understood the guy and loved him completely. it is a real romance here and i ll tell you, there s not a guy in the world that wouldn t want to be loved the way jackie loved jack. did you get insights from listening to her about her husband. i was struck by the fact that he took naps in his pjs for 45 minutes every day at the white house. as complicated as his life was, he did go to church every sunday his whole life. he would go into confession and he would sneak into the secret service line and he would sneak in among them so he guild to confession and the priest wouldn t recognize his voice. he was very catholic and i m a catholic and it s very complicated because we know the whole story, but it s all true. this information on the tapes is part of the total truth. you have to put it together. it is very fascinating. jackie called her husband, after ten years together, the unforgettable, elusive man. to the end he was elusive and i think he still is. i m still trying to put all of the parts together. it s a fascinating. the guy is the most fascinating guy of our time, jack kennedy. she gave you a title for your book elusive hero. yes, she did. she didn t know she was doing. good to talk to you. coming up next, the plus size fashionistas looking to shake up the fashion world. we ll meet them right after this. [ male announcer ] venza from toyota. well, it s fashion week here in new york city, an event that usually celebrates the size 0 model, but this morning we ll meet five plus sized fashionist as who are looking to change the world of high fashion. they star in a new reality show on tlc called big sexy. take a look. my girls and i are all plus sized women working in the fashion industry in new york city. this is leslie, audrey, a makeup artist who one day wants to be a fashion designer and nick i who is a plus size model like me and heather, a fashion stylist who is about to launch the bikini line with a photo shoot in miami. once you go big, you never go twig. that s catchy. the cast of big sexy, audrey, and tiffany. thank for being here. i know you ve been successful in this industry, the fashion industry which we know does favor usually the twiggies among us, so why pick on this industry? that must be very difficult. i think it needs to be done. i think we need to represent different body shapes and sizes and be examples for younger women that there are curvy models out there and it s okay to be full figured. this show is designed to follow your lives and talk about your struggles and your hopes and you re also, i hope, they re trying to kind of convey a sense of fun. i know in the first episode you all go pole dancing. what s that about? we go pole dancing. it s a workout. it s exercise! but are you trying to change people s minds about how they might view plus size women? definitely. it s important to see that you can t judge people and their size. i think that we all do that and so that we re positive women doing things in the fashion industry running around new york city not just sitting around waiting for things to happen for us. we re making it happen. i know you re wanting to do modeling as well and you re getting into it. have you run into trouble? i think you told our producer that, you know, people think oh, you don t have to lose weight or you don t have to watch your weight if you re a plus size model and that s not true. there s a huge misconception in the plus size modeling, that there s huge restrictions and you have to be certain measurements to fulfill a client s needs. people think it s just, like, you can be big and a model, but there are so many things that people need to pay attention to when you re trying to become a professional plus sized model. just like every other model you have to meet certain standards. just because you re tall doesn t mean you re a model. there are still standards, no matter what. it s a tough industry, no matter what. sometimes it s a tough world. audrey, there are moments in the series where people are quite cruel. someone walks up on the street and calls someone heavy. are you hoping to raise awareness for greater sensitivity? well, i mean, raising awareness for people who are heavy is difficult, but just try to get people who are bigger, and give them a sense of confidence that they can be who they want to be and look how they want to look and they can have the confidence they need to have and you go out every day and be happy with themselves. leslie, was it hard to do a reality show? here, the cameras are on you guys all of the time. are you happy you made the choice to do it? oh, absolutely. it s definitely a challenge, but the responses we ve gotten from people and from women, sending them e-mails and letting me than they re pressed for lives and making them feel better about themselves and feel more empowered and that s what we re all about. whether we re big or small doesn t matter. we re all women. your goal is to launch a bikini line. how is that going and have you run into trouble when you re trying to dig into the fashion industry as a designer? well, i m doing a bikini line called heather feather and it s for d-cups and up. it starts at d-cup and it goes all of the way to j which is hard to find. it s true to size, and i want to fit every body. you can be any size as long as you re d-cup and up. i know you re a shopper and stylist and you work with plus size women. is the hurdle finding cool clothes people want to wear or that people feel confident and want to experiment with fashion. it s actually both. you touched on both points. there aren t options for us to find the clothes and a lot of women are tlnt yet. they feel like they should hide because they don t have a skinny body and it s a therapy session where i have to walk them through self love and say this is okay. don t hide. you re beautiful. which everybody can use a little bit of that. ladies, so great to meet you. nikki gomez, audrey curry and tiffany banks, we ll see you tonight. big sexy on tlc. and just ahead, lady antebellum live in our studio. 8:26 is your time now on this tuesday, september 13th, 2011. good morning. i am eun yang. we do have still a fog bank over the potomac river. a bit of patchy fog in the rural areas and temperatures around the region in the 60s. later today in the 80s. still warm on wednesday, but increasing louds might get an evening or afternoon thunderstorm, and then passing showers on cooler, and then friday and into the weekend, much cooler. a bit warmer on sunday and monday. tom, thank you so morning. traveling 95 in virginia, slow as you head out of dell city and head north making your way towards the beltway. here s a live look. you will see a little relief at lordton. we are back now at 8:30 morning, 13th day of september 2011. great music from lady antebellum, the six-time gram aeshg ward winner will perform for us in just a couple of minutes inside our studio. we look forward to that. meanwhile, outside, i m matt lauer with savannah guthrie. we have al roker and tamron hall. what s coming up? yes. it s not really a feeling. in the book i document on half a dozen assaults on me including a very significant one that resulted in a prison term for an individual who was, you know, planning to blow up my house. so, i mean, i didn t understand. you know, i make documentary films. you don t really think that that s the result of, you know, it s it s just a little bit, you know, difficult. let s talk about the book because primarily you re talking about the younger years in these vignettes from your childhood. you say you were a good student and nuns loved you. what happened? i turned out just the way they wanted me to. you actually tell a great story when you were younger you gave a speech to an elks club that you know excluded african-americans and the speech competition was to talk about abraham lincoln and you turned that concept in a different direction. the elks club up until 1971 had a policy that said caucasians only. in the 1970s, and you could still discriminate and i was 17 years old and i know it s ironic, i gave a speech to them at this state convention, and the next day i was getting a call from walter cronkite, the producer wanted me to come on and it created a whole ruckus nationwide why in the 1970s can we still have whites-only clubs in america, and a year or so later it was the end of that. an early michael moore moment. there was another moment you describe being in washington walking around the capital as a young boy, getting lost and running into someone we all would recognize. i got separated from my parents, my sisters and my cousin and i was completely lost. i was 11 years old and i wandered into an elevator and there was a man in the elevator, and i m crying because i think i m completely i ll never see them again or whatever and he s reading a newspaper and puts the paper down and it s bobby kennedy, and he sees me standing there all forlorn and asked me what was wrong, and then he took me and helped me find my parents and waited there with me. i had this incredible conversation with him at 11 years old they describe. wow! interesting. you have lots of stories from your childhood. michael moore, always good to talk to you. thank you so much. the book is to remind everybody, here comes trouble. coming up next, jane paul owe how to find your calling later in life, but first this is we are back now. 8:43 with your life calling today. jane pauley is working with aarp, a sponsor of a special series of reports. good to have you back. good morning. good morning, matt. today we meet a lutheran pastor who went from the ministry to the military. here s rick master with his life calling. i knew from about the age of 10 on that this was my life calling, you know? to be a pastor and to be working with people. reporter: for 15 years rick was senior pastor of a lutheran congregation. i was a good preacher, but i was good at the counseling piece. reporter: he was running a big church. wasn t aware of just how much i was drying out at same time. what did you mean by that? that if we re feeding our soul it has to be green and vibrant and growing. if we re not engaged in the kind of alignment of things, you know, that really give us life we dry out. reporter: the turning point, four years ago, was not a crisis of faith. it was right around christmas time. i ll never forget it. reporter: it was depression. i couldn t concentrate anymore. i couldn t seem to get out of bed, hardly. reporter: but he didn t fight it. i listened to it. you re going to lay down there on that couch and when you get it straight in your head about what it is you want to do and what s going on give you life then you can get up. reporter: he decided to resign. i didn t have a plan. i didn t have a road map, but i was committed to paying attention. reporter: he took a variety of part-time jobs. a former parishioner was surprised to find him tending bar. i could see the gears turning, so this is what it s come to. yes, i ll have a rum and coke. reporter: whose idea was craigslist? my son tyler. there was some advertisement there about being in a spiritual support to young people. reporter: it was the minnesota national guard. about two months later i was a chaplain in the united states army. reporter: and at age 49 he was in iraq. fire! i was right there when they were dying. first responders. yes. part of the job is to comfort the dying and then also to be present for all those other soldiers looking for some normalcy. when things get difficult and you find your mood starting to go down, you do something about it. reporter: captain rickmaster is currently based at fort hood in texas. we pray for the safe return of these fine soldiers. reporter: trauma doesn t always stay on the battlefield. the role of the cham lan is to to be that safe place that someone with this tough exterior can admit how frightened they are. reporter: and the chaplain is often called to deliver the news when a soldier doesn t come home. you re watching as this person s whole world is dissolved. reporter: but that was his calling. to me it was full of god s grace. i got to exercise my gifts and skills in a way that i never could have envisioned it before. rick has basically woven two separate threads of his previous life into one. after college he served seven years in the u.s. air force and three more in the air force reserves. the reality check is that he s a father now, and though his kids are no longer children he knew military service would have a big impact on his family. i hope you will join me today for my live internet radio call-in show at noon eastern. just go to aarp.org/jane. it is a wonderful story. thank you very much. up next, a live performance from grammy-winning band lady antebellum, but first, this is oh, won t you be good to yourself? that doesn t sound horrible. it just naturally shows itself. we try to create a good story with the record and balance it out a lot with the different topic, but we re really proud of it. we definitely feel like we re honing in on the sound of our band a little bit more with each record. the second album was so successful and already having a number one hit off the third album. it has to take pressure off of it, right? it does. it does. we put pressure ourselves going into this record and we want to take anything from the last record as an affirmation from the fans. they ve been wonderful, coming out every year and supporting us and we ve been trying to get it out for a while. what will you do? what is going on around the country and here is what is happening in your neck of the woods. beautiful september under way. i am meteorologist, tom kierein. right now it s near 70 in washington and by the way and away from the waters ware we re in the 60s throughout the region. and later today we will be climb into the 80s throughout most of the region. lots of sunshine. and then tomorrow again in the low to mid-80s. during the afternoon and evening we might get an isolated shower or thunderstorm, and then might to you by bank of america. this morning on today s money taking advantage of low interest rates. they re already at rock bottom and we re expecting them to stay that way for years to come. today financial editor jean chatzky has tips for bow rowers and savers alike. nice to see you. nice to see you. why are we still hear budget low rates. ben bernanke said these low rates are with us until mid-2013. that means that for borrowers and for savers, you need a new strategy in order to take advantage of these for both sides of the coin. let s make these work for you, starting with folks looking to borrow. we re talking about refinancing mortgages. right. i know we spent an awful lot of time talking about that, if you can do it, the opportunity is there. if you re under water, we re starting to get news out of washington, but they may be revamping the home, affordable refinancing program in order to make this possible for people who have been stuck. so keep your eyes and ears open that that may come down the pike. we always think about mortgages, but there are other loans that you can think about refinancing in. let s talk about car loans. when we go out and shop for a car we get so excited about the car itself we often forget to negotiate on the financing and that s a really big deal. so if you have a car loan that s 6%, 7%, % and you have a good credit score. right now you can refi that down to 4%, 4.5% and it s an easy transaction and it costs next to nothing and it takes under an hour. for a $20,000 car loan over a four-year term from 8% to 4.5%, you could save yourself over $100. that s a good chunk of change. what is heloc. it is a home equity line of credit. you want to think of getting one of those as a back-pocket emergency cushion. if you have e quit ney your home because you need that, it s a second mortgage and you have a decent credit score, you could get a line of credit for 4.5% which may protect you if you lose your job and you need to draw down the cash, but you can also use it to consolidate and refinance other debt. you just have to be careful and what we saw last time around is they used them to refi credit card debt at attractive interest rates and they went out and charged the credit card right back up. you have the credit card debt and you re in double trouble. what about transferring your balance? a good time to do that. balance transfer offers and i went to low card.com and the list has gotten attractive because the tease are rates that wean about which puts you at 0% or something else, that s really, really cheap for the first so long has now been extended. you can eget a teaser rate that lasts 20 months in some cases and that gives you a long period of time to pay down the debt. when you look at credit cards and the interest rate on these cards is still astronomical and yet the interest rates are so low. how can they get away with this? this is the contract that you signed when you got this credit card and they re all set up so that the credit card companies make money, but what this means, these low interest rates is that there s wiggle room. you have to have a good credit score, but if you do call your own credit card company and do one of these balance transfers. let s talk about savers with the low interest rates. you have to work the numbers. the picture is not as pretty if you re a saver because cds, one-year cds are paying under 1% on average. savings accounts are paying way under 1% on average so you need some strategy and the first strategy to look at is an online bank. the rates are not great, but they re better. if you go to an allied bank or something like that you will find more than 1%. sallie mae who has a savings account for 1.3%. you ll find a list for the bank rate for saver if and when interest rates do go up these will rise. what about high-yield checking accounts. i love these. if you re a person who uses a debit card frequently you can earn 2% to 3% on your money. they just require that you make one online payment a month and make ten debit card transactions. they tape the account that you put in it on it, but if it s emergency pushing for and what about flexible cds? cd rates are loudy. we know that. i like looking for an out. it will not penal ease you and so does b of a. coming up next, you don t have to give up pasta to lose weight. we ll tell you which once are best with jill bower s diet s.o.s. going from day to evening with just one outfit, but first, these messages. -i love this card. -with the bankamericard cash rewards credit card, we earn more cash back for the things we buy most. it s 1% cash back [ male announcer ] venza from toyota. this morning in today s kitchen, what s for dinner in how about an old world italian meal. chef palladino is from harrah s resort in atlantic city. good to see you. thank you for having me. this one brings you back to when you were growing up. the combination of olive oil, caper, anchovies and olives brings me back to my nonna s kitchen. a lot of people aren t crazy about anchovies. anchovies are like salt. they re a seasoning or an enhancement to the dish, without them you would clearly notice the difference. let s get started with peppers. i ll show you a trick and if you want to grab one of these. i peel the peppers. instead of roasting them and peeling them, i peel them prior and you get 60% of the skin off, and that way you don t have to deal with the skin so save yourself a step and time from pre-roasting. and then you cut them up. so we cut them up here and i have the garlic and anchovies going with extra virgin olive oil. you don t want the garlic to brown at this point? it will get a little bit brown and the anchovies will melt. give this a stir and throw marjoram in. it s very aromatic. so for about 40 minutes. put a lid on it, don t add any liquid and it cooks for 40 minutes and it looks like this. it lets out all of its juices. smells terrific. nothing added, no liquid. at this point, take the capers. you want to add some of those? okay. cook it for about another five minutes. yeah. that s perfect. and then i finish it with bread crumbs. this is just an old southern italian tradition. some seasoned bread crumbs or just plain bread crumbs. we seasoned them with extra virgin olive oil ask that s it. let s move on to the pasta. you have three different past as going. we do. we make the past as inhouse and this is from naples and made with semolina flour, eggs, milk, parsley and basil and we re making it with shrimp. these are beautiful. extra virgin olive oil, garlic and chilies that we make. we make our own chili paste here. we take chilies and fry them, salt them and let them ferment overnight. if you re not going do that? chili flakes are great. throw garlic in there. okay. now this you want to get a little bit toasty. let s drop our pasta down there. and this pasta is fresh. it takes two minutes and you can substitute dry rigatoni and ling wi uini. chili or chili flakes if you prefer. whatever you have. all right. that is really aromatic. and this is the soffrito. this is what makes all of the flavor. and we ll throw the shrimp in. this will cook up pretty quickly. yes, it will. you don t want to overcook the shrimp. i use these raw. as we move along because we re almost out of time pop. this is what it looks like after that and we take the shrimp and roast the beautiful heirloom tomato. so you ve already made your own sauce. yes. it s ready to go and this is the deal. and then we add to this arugala, tear some mint into this and basil. very fresh and very aromatic and very much the style of the amalfi coast cooking. and this is the peppers a la nonna. delicious ciabatta. rick palladino, thank you so much. we ll chow down in just a second, but first we have one more song from the country superstars, lady antebellum, but first this is today on nbc. the toyota concert series on today brought to you by toyota. you guys have to get over there and get some of those peppers. a lot of tasting in that segment. coming up hoda and kathie lee cuddle up with a crocodile and we re not talking about crocodile purses either. and they ll have some advice about how to ignite the romance in your life by dating your hubby. but first, multiple grammy winners lady antebellum singing the latest hit i need you now. so, you actually reward people for staying with you? yep. the longer you stay with us, the more you save. and when you switch from another company to us, we even reward you for the time you spent there. genius. yeah, genius. you guys must have your own loyalty program, right? well, we have something. show her, tom. huh? you should see november! oh, yeah? giving you more. now that s progressive. call or click today. without, i just need you now good morning, everybody. i am barbara harrison. it s 9:56, tuesday september 13th. let s go straight on our meteorologist, tom kierein, to look at the forecast. it s a beautiful september morning. right now it s climb into the 70s. 73 at reagan national. we have bright sun and a blue sky. it s going to continue to warm up. we should hit the mid-and upper quiz by midafternoon. and then tomorrow looks like a warm day with afternoon highs in the mid-80s with increasing clouds. maybe a few isolated thunderstorms perhaps late afternoon and into the evening, and the front will move in through wednesday night and into thursday. and cooler weather with the clouds on thursday. sun back on friday, but much cooler. 40s in the morning and upper 60s. monday and sunday should be warmer but cooler than average for this time of year. now, how is late morning traffic. this is in maryland, an accident at route 198 . you are seeing some delays. and i want to give you a look right now. enter loop robinson with a delay. as you continue to i-66 you are slow. slow. barbara, back to you. captions paid for by nbc-universal television hello, everybody. it is booze day tuesday, september 13th. we are delighted you re here with us today, aren t we, hoedy? we are glad. madonna is stirring up controversy again. now, yesterday we told you the story about how a fan gave her a hydrangea and she said, i loathe hydrangeas. she has the right to do. before we show this, hold on in response to this, she decided to put out her own video. this is what it is. she doesn t speak. that music is from the godfather. so that s the video. there you have it. i guess the controversy didn t bother her a bit. it didn t seem like an apology. no. i think madonna is an extraordinary woman. she obviously is, she accomplished so much. i think she wants us to think nothing bugs her, but things bug her. she is a human being. i don t know. i think if she didn t care, then why go to the trouble? why go to the expense? i don t get that. it s one of those me thinks thou protests too much moment. everything we see is about tone. how it is when someone gives you something. maybe she didn t thing the mics would pick up what she was saying. at the same time is that i don t know. i think what can happen to so many people. we see them around here. people that have gotten so huge in this world that by necessity, they ve become very insular and very insulated from so much in the real world that regular people are aware of. i think you lose touch with reality. that seemed totally ungracious to people. that s what they didn t like. it s not about liking or disliking. up to her.courage it took for a to hand madonna something, it s a big deal. it s at a news conference. you have to approach. we don t know who he is.anyw. i don t know. i don t want to say anything i ll be sorry to say i think it s never important to lose touch who you are, where you came from and where we re all ending up which is dust to dust, and it won t matter what you accomplished in this world. it s how you treat people. two notes about the u.s. open. first of all, djokovic won. he hurt his back, but he won anyway. he fell down. he s different from all the other players. he likes to cut a rug. we like to see that. so we have a little he s like your doffelganger. he learned that move from you. where s the music? no music. just add your own. imitating him in the stands. he is a cool, funky he s no al roker, but he s good. he can do it. that s what you do. and i love him for that. i was so glad at one of the matches when he won they asked him to cut a rug. they said would you like to dance on the court? he said only if everyone dances with me so everyone got involved. he s an amazing player. terrific. i have a little crush on nadal. he s a hot one. serena williams, we told you yesterday about the fact she was now we know she was fined. she said stuff to the line judge. first she yelled before the girl had a chance to hit the ball. that caused a problem. the line judge gave the point to the opponent and she took issue with that. this is not the first time. and when she is here, i must say, she is a delight. she really is. we re not battling for her. she won $1.4 million during the u.s. open. and was fined $2,000. hats off to our girl natalie morales. i didn t see that last night. i was so jet lagged i missed it. i heard she was amazing. she hosted the miss universe pageant and looked like a million bucks. she was in brazil. that s andy cohen. the winner was miss angola. she speaks five languages. more than that, probably. she is such an accomplished woman. i always think she is prettier than any contestant and she is a lot older than they are, too. those are 17 and 18-year-old girls. yes. natalie is a woman with children of her own. what i m saying is she always looks like she should win the contest. ima he not trying to get new trouble. they re all upset over there. sorry. i think it s a big difference between being 18 and in your 30s. it s a huge difference. we are doing a segment today called cheating on your husband with your husband. this kind of sparked a lot of conversation. i think a lot of people who have been in marriages a long time are trying to get that old spark back. they want to feel like they felt when they were younger. trying to get the feeling again. which was written by david palmerantz. one of the great songs about how to get the feeling back. i didn t know. this sparks the whole thing about, can you really go back to a period in your life? all of us fight it. you fight it with your looks, your skin, you want to look like you did, you don t want to tell your age, you want that loving feeling. what do you think? i think it s understandable because each day we age we realize we are one step closer to not aging any longer, you know what i mean? let s face it. we always long for, first love anyway. what you re going through right now is the hottest, most exciting thing in the world. but there is a song, remember the birds? to everything turn, turn, turn there is a season turn, turn, turn that s from the book of eclisiates. it s wise to embrace right now and enjoy every minute of it. it does nobody any good to say, remember the good old days. i understand wanting to feel that way again, but i think you can find something more beautiful as you grow in a relationship. an intimacy that is not even of a sexual nature but profound in your life. if you re just long iing for wh you used to have, there is probably a really good chance you re not enjoying what you have right now at this very moment. we are talking about that james taylor song, the lyrics are, the secret of life. the secret of life is enjoying a passage of time it s exactly what it is. you have to enjoy right here and now. right her on the set with you. let s freeze the moment. here. cheers. as we cheer. last night. apparently when frank and i were first dating, friends of ours say we were outside at a party in the hamptons and frank allegedly said, look, kathie, there is the moon, to which i basically said, really, frank? [ male announcer ] it s sweet. it s nutty. it s absolutelyelicious. kellogg s® crunchy nut™. it s morning somewhere™. after years of sharing domestic chores, raising kids, balancing careers and checkbooks, is there a time you think, is that all it is? one woman suggests cheat on your husband with your husband. she is author andrea syrtash. it s an interesting topic. a lot of people feel the sizzle has gone out of their marriage and they want to recapture that. it seems it should be doable, right? it is doable. falling in love and being in love are different. the chemistry in your brain. romantic love, we re crazy when we are falling in love. there are ways to trick your brain into thinking the love is new. how do you do it? falling is a verb. you can t help it. being in love is a verb. you have to work at it. i think it s insidious. it s boredom. i did a survey of 3,500 people, couples. 25% were extremely bored in their relationships. another 25% were somewhat bored. that s 50% of couples who are bored. you said they were couples. did both individuals in the couples say they were bored? one is bored and the other is perfectly satisfied. very often the people who were bored in relationships were bored at work and bored in previous relationships. but how do you cheat on your husband with your husband? that s how we ve been teasing this whole thing. there are a bunch of ways to do that. we ll go over a few today. marriage is a choice you have to make every day. we know relationships are work, but the work can be fun, sexy, fulfilling. one big thing is novelty to curb the boredom many of us face. we have to plan to be spontaneous. you can no longer just pick up and go like you did when you were dating. that s not realistic now. you still can plan moments of that. explore a new neighborhood. be a tourist in your city. do these things you usually just go to the corner restaurant on your date night. mix it up. absolutely. i think also keeping the big picture of your relationship in view. my wife and i travel a lot. whenever we are disconnected, i m always thinking about the relationship and how much i love her and what our hopes and dreams are for the relationship. when we are actually together, we get so bogged down in triviality and minutia. and you want to sweat the small stuff. it s the smallest things that will affect your relationship good or bad. people think in terms of all or nothing and they get overwhelmed because you can t do it all. you end up doing nothing. how about role play? say you re going to have a date night. you don t have a lot of money to go to a brand-new place. should you pretend you re just out on the first date? i think that s one of the pieces of homework i give my patients. it is really effective. it s fun. the first thing when i heard about andrea s book and read andrea s book was that scenario. it can be a lot of fun to pretend you don t know each other. how much they love to talk about themselves, they get to answer all over again. for some people, that will feel sticky. then you laugh at it. have humor about it. have a sense of humor. especially when it comes to intimacy. you have to push your comfort zone. try new things. you do end up laughing a little. your book is chockful of good info. thanks. up next, three women who changed the world and how you can, too. have i got a surprise for you! a mouthwatering combination of ingredients. i know you re gonna love.
