recording flood alerts. meteorologist allison chinchar joins us now with the forecast here. what are you seeing? >> right. we want to give you the update because we just got a brand-new update at the top of the hour from the national hurricane center. and for the first time, the national hurricane center has issued its very first tropical storm watch ever for the state of california. this is for mostly southern california. it does include san diego, but stops just short of los angeles, continuing through orange county, not quite up through los angeles county. but it's one of many watches and warnings that are out as you stretch through baja, california, down there, and it's anticipation of the forward movement. still a category four now. winds sustained at 145 miles per hour, moving to the northwest at about ten miles per hour. we do anticipate this storm is going to maintain its strengths for a little bit longer before finally starting to weaken as it makes its way up along the baja, california, coast, before finally pushing into california. most likely it's just a tropical storm. the main reason for that is it's

state and local officials. >> chad myers is "outfront" at the cnn weather center. chad, where is the storm right now? >> there's cabo san lucas, so well south of there, still in very warm water, erin. so this thing grew 75 miles per hour in strength in just 24 hours. it went all the way up to 145. now that number says 130. why? because there were men and women in a c-130 aircraft that left the air force base this morning, flew into this thing across the gulf of mexico, across mexico, and into the storm and found that it wasn't as strong as the satellites were predicting. so that's good. now we're down to 130. 129 is category 3. 130's, you know, category 4. so we're right kind of splitting hairs here. but now, yes, the very, very first tropical storm watch for california, not just southern california, all of. >> it is incredible when you

on hurricane hilary. our meteorologist chad myers is in the cnn weather center. chd, when will the storm reach the u.s., and what can we expect once it's here? >> i think the rain probably starts tomorrow afternoon, and we hope that's the case. and i'll tell you why. because we hope the ground is wet before the wind blows 60. because if the wind is blowing 60 in a desert in a place that hasn't seen a lot of rain this summer at all, you could see fires before the hurricane ends and comes to put these fires out, so these are called prec precursor rains. they come in before the hurricane. 2:00 advisory 145 miles per hour. the hurricane hunter aircraft just flew through this. it left biloxi and a prop c130 flew all the way up to the storm but it found the pressure was not as low, and it found the winds were not as high as the

concern is growing tonight that hurricane hilary will unleash a dangerous amount of rainfall in the southwestern united states. what can we expect from hilary? >> hilary went up 75 miles per hour, the core of the storm up in 24 hours. so now it's kind of taken the foot off the gas, but it's still going to take some time to slow down, kind of like your car, it takes some time after you take your foot off the gas. 130-mile-per-hour storm right now getting into some much cooler water. that's the good news. the reason why we had 145 a few hours ago, our hurricane hunter flew in and didn't find 145. so the hurricane center backed on of a little bit, and they also put up a tropical storm watch there for los angeles proper, hurricane warnings farther south obviously into baja, california. this is the storm right now.
