Laura Stargel Writes Op-Ed Opposing Florida Transgender Athlete Bill


During Florida's contentious legislative session, two Republican lawmakers filed legislation to prohibit transgender girls from playing on girls' sports teams in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools. State Sen. Kelli Stargel and Rep. Kaylee Tuck argued it was necessary to preserve the integrity of competitive, segregated sports and claimed that transgender athletes have an unfair advantage over cisgender females.
Stargel temporarily postponed the Florida Senate bill on April 20, and the measure was considered dead. Instead, part of the bill was hastily tacked on as an amendment to a bill about charter schools. Ignoring impassioned pleas from trans-rights groups and Democratic lawmakers, the Republican-dominated legislature passed the bill on April 28, including the transgender-athlete amendment.

Miami-Dade County Considers Community IDs


If you don't have a government-issued ID in Miami-Dade, you can't rent an apartment, register your kid for school, check out a library book, open a bank account, seek medical care, or get vaccinated for COVID-19.
People living without IDs — a group that includes minors, formerly incarcerated people, the homeless, undocumented residents, victims of domestic violence, and those in the process of a gender transition — can't prove who they are and are often barred from accessing basic services. But community advocacy groups are trying to change that.
"A community ID is a small piece of the broader work of uniting people and helping them feel more of a sense of belonging in their community," says the Rev. Aaron Lauer. Lauer's Congregational United Church of Christ in Coral Gables is a member of People Acting for Community Together (PACT), an interfaith group that has been pushing for a community ID program in Miami-Dade for years.

More than two dozen states, including Florida, introduced laws this year to impose restrictions on transgender athletes.
Two Florida Republican lawmakers, Sen. Kelli Stargel and Rep. Supporters of the legislation say they're trying to maintain the integrity of competitive, segregated sports and argue that transgender female athletes have an unfair advantage over cisgender females, partly because of hormonal differences.
The proposals sparked an outcry from activists and Democratic lawmakers, and the measure was considered effectively dead earlier this month. But by way of some legislative trickery, part of the bill was tacked on as an amendment to a bill about charter schools. This week the Republican-led Florida legislature passed that bill — including the amendment banning transgender girls from playing on female sports teams. (The legislation regulates athletes who transition from male to female but lacks any similar conditions for athletes who transition from female to male.)

"A Little More Time" Highlights Miami-Dade Evictions


Regans, an artist-in-residence for the nonprofit legal-aid organization Community Justice Project, has now turned tenants' testimonies into an audio/visual installation called "A Little More Time" to raise awareness about housing insecurity in Miami-Dade.
The nine-minute video project includes the words of five tenants who were fighting eviction cases but who ultimately were removed from their homes. To commemorate International Workers Day, it will debut this coming Saturday, May 1, at the Miami Workers Center, 720 NW 55th St., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Over much of the past year, Community Justice Project lawyers defending renters against evictions have pored over hundreds of such testimonies, and housing organizers with the Miami Workers Center have knocked on doors to offer support to people at risk of losing their homes.

A new poll from bipartisan firm RABA Research found the state’s top elected official and the Commander in Chief both have approval ratings in the positive by double-digits.

From the moment Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed legislation to crack down on protests, lawyers and civil-liberties groups have cried foul, arguing that the proposed bill would chill free speech, discourage people from demonstrating, and inspire vigilantism against protesters.
The governor signed the bill into law on Monday, and it went into effect immediately. The law enhances punishments for most crimes committed at protests, can penalize those who stand in a public street or highway during a demonstration, gives some civil immunity to drivers who run over protesters, and prevents people from bailing out of jail immediately if they're arrested while protesting.
