Law-Abiding Medical Marijuana Users Can Still Be Fired in Florida

Laws in 20 states prohibit employers from discriminating against workers because of their medical pot use. But as evidenced by McCarty's case, there are no explicit workplace protections for medical marijuana users in Florida. Instead, the state statute on medical pot upholds an employer's right to enforce a drug-free workplace and doesn't require companies to accommodate workers' medical marijuana use.
Two bills introduced in the Florida Legislature would have changed that, but both failed. The first, introduced in 2019 by state Rep. Tina Polsky of Boca Raton, would have barred employers from discriminating against, firing, demoting, or taking any other "adverse personnel action" against any employee who is a card-carrying pot user. The bill included exceptions for people performing "safety-sensitive" job duties, such as operating machinery, fighting fires, driving, handling hazardous materials, carrying a firearm, or caring for children and patients.

Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo May Fire Officers for Excessive Force

During the interview, Acevedo said that it gave him "a little bit of heartburn" to learn that it's standard for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to lead the investigation when a police officer shoots a civilian. Those investigations, as well as the parallel investigations by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, can take a year or longer to be completed.
"If I had the opportunity to investigate it, I would," Acevedo said, adding that the investigations wouldn't take a year or longer if he assigned a team.
Roundup host Tom Hudson asked Acevedo whether he felt it was proper to have outside agencies investigate a police-involved shooting. Acevedo said yes, but that he would want the Miami Police Department to investigate alongside the other agencies.

Cari Garcia, the mind behind the Fatgirl Hedonist food blog, was one influencer who received the email. Her first thought: "Are you fucking kidding me?"
Garcia works in the healthcare industry in Broward County and has been attempting to secure vaccines for high-risk family members and friends for several weeks. She says accepting a vaccine appointment because of how many followers she has would present a "huge ethical conflict" for her.
"I feel like there are people that need it more," she tells

Miami-Dade County Will Lift Midnight Curfew on April 12

Some people didn't know it, but since July, Miami-Dade County has been under a nightly curfew meant to keep the number of COVID-19 cases under control. After an initial 10 p.m. curfew, the county moved to a later midnight curfew in October.
Soon, nightlife venues and other businesses won't need to turn out the lights when the clock strikes 12. County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced today that she is lifting the curfew beginning Monday, April 12. Cava said she and her administration, including the county's chief medical officer, Dr. Peter Paige, analyzed the county's COVID positivity rate and other data points to determine that it is safe to lift the curfew.

Axios: Biden Opposes Reopening Homestead Camp for Migrant Children

The Homestead detention center opened under the administration of Barack Obama and became a symbol of Donald Trump's hard-line, zero-tolerance immigration policy of family separation. The camp was the subject of national outrage in 2019 because of reports of sexual abuse, human-rights violations, overcrowding, and negligent hiring practices. While inside, children were not allowed to hug each other, had snacks and friendship bracelets confiscated, and reported crying themselves to sleep at night out of fear they'd never be released.
Immigrant-rights and social-justice groups that previously led a grassroots campaign to shut down the facility told
New Times the center was no place for children.
