Why Are So Many Kids In Brazil Dying Of COVID?

Now that we are a year and a half into the pandemic and deaths in the U.S. are trending downward — especially with almost 38% of the total U.S. population fully vaccinated — some sense of normalcy has returned to many of us. In particular, since the FDA has approved the Pfizer vaccine for children 12 and up and we’re on track to have safe and effective COVID vaccines for children 6 months and older by the end of the year.
But in Brazil, COVID deaths are now at their highest. Though all the evidence points to COVID rarely killing young children, the numbers of very young kids dying of COVID are much higher in Brazil than they are in the U.S. It’s tragic, and the experts aren’t sure why — although the failed response by the right-wing government is thought to be responsible for over 360,000 preventable deaths.

For months, critics of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have been calling for an investigation into his handling of the country's devastating Covid-19 crisis. On Tuesday, it finally began.
The parliamentary inquiry into the Brazilian government's Covid-19 response kicked off with hours of testimony from former Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta -- one of several who have passed through the crucial role during the pandemic.

Despite overwhelming evidence that the coronavirus seldom kills children under the age of five, 1,300 babies have died due to it in the last year. The increased deaths are being blamed on Brazil's COVID-19 infection rate, the second-highest in the world, a significant lack of monitoring, and a president accused of failing to treat the virus seriously enough.

India and China Accidently Become Rivals for Providing Brazil's COVID Vaccine

Despite Bolsonaro Objection, China in Running to Provide Vaccine to Brazil
NEW DELHI—Competing Brazilian politicians have ended up inviting both China’s Sinovac and India’s Serum Institute for COVID-19 vaccines amid delays in the production of Brazil’s own vaccine.
Meanwhile, the country’s private clinics have turned to another Indian vaccine producer, Bharat Biotech, for 5 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine called Covaxin.
Brazil has the third-highest cases of CCP virus, but, despite having the capacity to produce the vaccine, the country’s administration couldn’t achieve the timely production of a home-made vaccine.
President Jair Bolsonaro’s rival and contender in the 2022 presidential race, the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, invited China’s Sinovac to supply its Coronavac vaccine for the 44 million residents of his province.
