May 24, 2021, News Release
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and JMRL is honored to host Dr. Sylvia Chong, Director of the Asian Pacific American Studies Program at the University of Virginia, for an important and timely virtual presentation entitled The History of Anti-Asian Violence in the U.S. This Zoom program is scheduled for Tuesday, May 25 at 7:00pm.
The recent wave of anti-Asian hate crimes, coupled with mass shootings in Atlanta and Indianapolis that targeted a large number of Asian victims, have received increased levels of attention in the national media. Coverage of these events has also exposed widespread ignorance of the history of Asian Americans’ presence in the U.S., along with the acts of mass violence, harassment and discrimination that they have faced.

Shifting the Onus of Responsibility From Victims of Anti-Asian Violence to Perpetrators: Looking Beyond "Situational Awareness"

The pandemic, and its associated blame game, has reminded many of us just how quickly tides can turn—how quickly, stepping out of the hospital and taking off my white coat propels me from “health care hero” to dirty bat-eating foreigner, or exotic, submissive object.

The other day, I received an email from my medical school in response to increased acts of violence and hate against Asians—like me. The Department of Public Safety was offering “situational awareness” training sessions. While well intended, I suppose, situational awareness training returns the onus and therefore responsibility of safety squarely on the shoulders of victims of violence.

The need for a counter-narrative on anti-Asian racism

The need for a counter-narrative on anti-Asian racism
It’s no secret that the uptick in expressions of anti-Asian racism in the United States, including verbal and physical assaults, is having a deleterious effect on the recruitment of international students in key Asian sending countries, the source of 70% of all international students in the US.
The most egregious cases have received extensive coverage in the Vietnamese print, electronic and social media. A number of parents whose children had been accepted to US high schools, for example, have changed their minds out of fear for the personal safety of their sons and daughters.
