very clear trajectory for donald trump? >> no. i don't think -- i've been saying i think last night, no breakout star. and, again, some of this is theater. you take a look at what vivek was saying last night, and people are going to dig down a little bit deeper and they're going to like the fact they have a fresh new face out there. but at the end, we're really talking about somebody who could be president of the united states. and, you know, you take a look at his position, i heard that thing about i would have had a new election, i would have had paper ballots, i mean, over time i think that really sells. it is not very solid. i think what people are looking for is when they take a look, somebody who could be president, somebody who could be the commander in chief, that's what i think they're looking for. and so -- but at this point, i don't see the breakout. i just don't see who it is that is going to narrow it. we have long time to go, we have

as well as mike pence. who didn't overperform, though, was ron desantis, who was awkward, overshadowed, and very angry the entire time, which is not going to help his standing at all whatsoever. he only has anywhere to go but down. >> who was the biggest winner and the loser, john? >> my sense was that frankly it was no breakout for anybody. i think she is right. i think nikki did well. i kind of had a different view of desantis. i think he got out of the debate. did he go down? i don't think he went down, but, you know, he stood out there, he didn't have that moment where he could kind of recover where he was, but, you know, all and all, i think there was not a great breakout moment. frankly it seemed to me at times that the moderators wanted to kind of run the show. they seemed to do more talking sometimes than even the candidates. but it is a difficult situation when you have eight people on,

can look at him and see he is feeble. they see he is too old. they think he is too old to be president. probably many did before. but because, you know, he had the afghanistan withdrawal, which i think knocked him down in the public's estimation. he has never been able to recover from that now, on top of that, you have all this other trouble and, of course, the dollar being inflated meant that all the good news that you would normally be able to say about jobs created, they really are jobs restored for not in terms of his public [inaudible] standing. is he in terrible shape which leads me to the thought that his nomination is dependent on one thing, the expectation that trump will be the republican nominee. >> bret: so obviously the former president is not here tonight. a lot of people tried to have a breakout moment on this stage. if one does, what do the democrats and the biden campaign do? >> i don't think there is any doubt that if we get a candidate get a clear breakout moment

thinks i'm going to stay in a little bit longer. what's going to be the decisive factor that pushes them out? >> it's interesting. you heard an interesting column. what's interesting what's good for these candidates is that donald trump is not on the debate stage on tomorrow night. what that allows them to start talking about not just the issues but to present that there are viable alternatives to donald trump. now, what you asked is what's the crux that starts allowing a breakout? i believe it's not how the candidates are doing against donald trump that will make the difference. it's how donald trump is doing against biden in these polls. if biden starts gaining a 5, 6, 7-point lead over trump, you will then have, you know, potentially good alternatives to donald trump and the electability argument. it takes those two things for someone to really come out and break out against donald trump.

candidates have been practicing with the idea of him being on stage or not, and even though he is not, the policies and the statements will be front and center to all of this, and as we are talking to many of the strategists advising the campaigns, they are indeed looking for a potential breakout moment to introduce themselves to the country. for all of the months and months of campaigning in the early voting states of iowa and new hampshire and south carolina, this is representing the biggest opportunity on one stage, one night on national television to make their case to republican voters. the question of course is if any of them will be able to break through or if former president donald trump when he surrenders to the fulton county officials in georgia will dissolve any bump. here in final hours in milwaukee, they are preparing and tomorrow night's debate is the opening bell of this challenge of the primary race

means to talk about why you are running and do it yourself. that is the best course of action. >> jamal, you are talk about trumpism and magaism is on the ba ballot, but what is the impact if trump ends up skipping all of the debates and the impact? >> well, this is the dang ter o all of that, and the question is, and the answer is because you asked it, but the challenge is for donald trump that campaigns are like kindling, and every one of the candidates is like a little piece of kindling, and you never quite know when the kindling is going to catch fire. so if he is not present, everyone is going after him and after each other, and somebody might have a breakout moment, and he won't be there to arrest the moment or steal it back are the that moment which he is really good at, and this is the point where he is in trouble, and somebody has a breakout, and they begin to rise in the polls, and he is not there to stop it.
