reporter: this rescue operation took place in broad daylight in an area called dave surratt in central gaza. the israeli military says this was based on weeks of intelligence and that they simultaneously stormed two apartments in buildings around 200 yards away from each other. in one of those apartments, they found noa argamani on her own and in the other, they found those three male hostages who were also kidnapped from the october 7th music festival. when those israeli special forces had the hostages in their arms, they gave the agreed-upon code word over the radio. they said we have the diamonds, we have the diamonds. they got the hostages out in armored vehicles. noa argamani was flown back and israel by a helicopter and taken to the hospital here in the greater tel aviv area. i met her father on october 8th. the worst day of this man s life, his world crumbling, his only daughter kidnapped by hamas and i saw him again today exactly 8 months later, and you can only imagine the joy exuberant rating out of this man to have his child back. we had a chance to speak to some of his friends and listen to what they told us about how she is doing. how are you guys feeling? amazing. you saw noa? how is she doing? she s laughing, she is strong, it s amazing. reporter: now, this moment of joy for noa and her family is also tinged with sadness. noa s mother is dying of brain cancer. for these last eight months, it has been her final wish to see her daughter once again and tonight, that wish was fulfilled. noa s boyfriend was kidnapped alongside her on october 7th. he remains inside gaza is one of the 120 hostages still being held there and jonathan, i should tell you that while there are celebrations here in israel tonight, there is absolutely searing grief inside of gaza. the health ministry says at least 210 people were killed by israeli forces during this raid, many of them, women and children. our team on the ground inside gaza sat many dead and dying children being brought into that facility there, so it is a painful split screen tonight between the joy in israel and the grieving going on inside gaza. indeed. thank you. we have also learned that one member of the israeli police counterterrorism unit has died from injuries during the operation. we will be monitoring the story and bring you updates throughout the evening on msnbc. we are also monitoring this out of washington, d.c. where thousands of pro-palestinian demonstrators have gathered outside the white house to protest the united states support for israel amid its war in gaza. they formed a redline around the white house blocking traffic and calling for an arms embargo against israel. white house staff had increased security around the residence and put up protective fencing. now, we put turn to disturbing developments in the presidential election. ever since donald trump s guilty verdict last week, the four times indicted president is vowing revenge in dangerous ways. this week, the presumptive republican nominee for president told us exactly what he plans to do if he gets back in the white house. i think you have so much to do, you don t have time to get even. you only have time to get right. well, revenge does take time. i will say that and sometimes revenge can be justified. reporter: in your first term you did not arrest any of your political opponents but after your conviction last week, has your approach to that changed? the world is different now so when you asked me the question would we do it, i ll talk to you in about three weeks from now. wouldn t it be terrible to throw the president s wife and the former secretary of state think of it. the president s wife into jail. it s very possible that is going to have to happen to them. speaker mike johnson is not waiting to exact revenge on trump s behalf. this week, he laid out how he plans to weaponize the houses oversight powers to go after the federal investigations into trunk. we are working on a three- pronged approach through the appropriations process, through the legislative process, through bills that we will be advancing through committees and putting on the floor for passage and also through oversight. those things will be happening vigorously because we have to do that because the stakes are too high but, as scary as that is, the new york times reports that prominent republicans in and out of government art demanding quote, that elected republicans use every available instrument of power against democrats, including targeted investigations and prosecutions. take, for instance, former trump aid, election denier and soon to be prison inmates, steve bannon, who is urging the prosecution of democrats telling the new york times quote, there are dozens of ambitious backbencher state attorneys general and district attorneys who need to seize the day and on this moment in history. and, bannon is not the only one calling for revenge. i m talking about to it for tat. you just wait and it won t be hunter biden the next time. it s going to be joe biden. it could potentially still be barack obama. it could still potentially be hillary clinton. you have to get in the game, republicans. as every house committee controlled by republicans using its subpoena power in every way it needs to right now starting every investigation they need to right now? we need some brave district attorneys in the united states to step forward and take aggressive action. incredible rogues gallery there, but you notice, there is no mention of actual crimes committed. only enemies to be targeted in a tidal wave of vengeance and retribution. as the new york times knows, quote, the intensity of anger and open desire for using the criminal justice system against democrats after the verdict surpasses anything seen before in transnational tumultuous years in national politics six. what is different now is the range of republicans saying retaliation is necessary and who are no longer cloaking their intent with euphemisms. this is why, for the sake of our democracy, we need to take all of what you just heard, the snarling threats of revenge and the actions to come, very seriously. joining me now, olivia troy, former top aide to former vice president mike pence and anthony coley, former legal affairs analyst and former senior adviser to attorney general merrick garland. thank you both very much for coming to the saturday show. i would love to get both of your reactions to trump suggesting that he s going to jail political opponents. i drama trump projects and says what he plans to do so i think we should take it very seriously but i don t think it s going to stop his political opponents. i think he means anyone who is ever crossed him. he will start with people like you in the media, people like me who have been outspoken critics and there will be actually no justification for it, exactly the point you made it the end of your opening. right now, what is the crime? what are you trying to investigate? but it doesn t matter to trump, because he will bend the rules and put enablers in place to go along with it. before you give your reaction, to what you just said, olivia, what is really scary to me is yes, he is saying all of this stuff and he will try to do all of this stuff and my fear is, i m not sure that the american people will rise up to try to stop him. that s exactly right. what you just said about putting enablers and places key. donald trump has learned one key fundamental truth about washington which is that people our policy. what we have seen here in d.c., they hire people, they surround themselves with people who share their vision and their values and thankfully and his first term, we had enough conservative republicans around him who resisted his very worst instincts, people who put their oath to the constitution, like olivia, ahead of their loyalty to him. they are not going to be that, those people, in the second term. he s going to surround himself in the white house with yes men and in the congress, just imagine if donald trump is president, he is more likely than not to have a republican majority in the congress. they are not going to do legitimate oversight. they re going to do rubberstamps and then we cannot look to the judiciary to save us. he has openly talked about eileen cannon, who i believe is deliberately slow walking this documents case. he talks about how we need more judges like her and i think your viewers have got to understand he has already appointed three justices to the supreme court. so, five of nine justices could be donald trump appointees and that should send a shiver down anyone s spine who loves our country and our constitution. yes, i m trying to remember who it was. oh, it was dan pfeiffer during a podcast interview for he made this exact point. if donald trump gets re-elected you can see thomas and one other justice, alito, retire and he would get at least two more but let s talk about speaker johnson since you invoked congress. speaker johnson, among the things he wants to do, he wants to theoretically allow trump to move state-level charges he is facing in georgia to federal court with the option to then issue a self pardon if convicted. that would totally upend the rule of law in this country. yes, and it is shameful to be someone who supported the republican party for so long to watch this, the party that used to stand for freedom, liberty, the rule of law. now we have completely flipped the script on it but that is a very serious thing in the fact that they are just openly discussing it and saying yeah, this is our plan, and it is for a pardon and they are all on board with it. it doesn t matter. this person committed a crime. there was an entire process that happened. it was a jury of his peers who decided on the conviction. these are cases going on in georgia where there are republicans testifying who are involved in this process, who saw the whole sedition happening firsthand so i think this is a disturbing on so many levels because it is the speaker of the house and he knows better. the other thing is, not for one second should anyone believe these people don t understand exactly what they are doing because they are intelligent and they know exactly calculated what the plan is. what really bothers me is the sense that these prosecutions were not deserved. this is politicization of the u.s. justice department. nothing could be further from the truth. i spent two years at the u.s. justice department. i saw the attorney general put in place people and processes to make sure that facts and law, not politics or anything else, would be the determining factor for investigations and prosecutions. you want more evidence that is what is happening now, look at the fact that right now, the u.s. justice department under joe biden is prosecuting joe biden s son. right, right. i love how joe biden s justice department is going after donald trump but they leave out that joe biden s justice department is not only going after joe biden s son, but also a prominent democratic senator. two prosecutions, so if joe biden has weaponize the justice department, he is doing it all wrong. i can t believe we just got started talking and it s all done. olivia, anthony, thank you very much for coming to the saturday show. up next, hunter biden could take the stands next week as his trial on gun charges enters its next phase. i m officially done switching. .i don t want to miss that. that s amazing doc. mobile savings are calling. visit xfinitymobile.com to learn more. doc? hunter biden s daughter, naomi, was the last person to take the stand in his firearms trial this week but she could end up being the first and only family member to testify in his defense. he is charged with three felony counts for allegedly lying about gun use. his daughter testified she did not see him using drugs around the time he bought the gun. earlier in the week, hunter biden sister-in-law and another former girlfriend appeared as witnesses for the prosecution under immunity agreements. they joined his ex-wife and testifying at length about his addiction to crack cocaine and his struggle to stay sober. the defense team is now deciding whether to call hunter himself to the stand on monday. in an interview with abc news, president biden said he will accept the verdict no matter what it is, and that he will not pardon his son if he is convicted. joining me now, msnbc legal analyst and former u.s. attorney, barbara mcquaid. she is cohost of the hashtag sisters-in-law podcast and is also the author of attack from within, how disinformation is sabotaging america. thank you as always for coming to the saturday show. how risky would it be for hunter biden to testify on his own behalf? testifying on one s own behalf is probably the most difficult decision the defendant has to make and something that the lawyer will sit down with them and discuss the pros and cons. i think on the pro side, the defense here has been that hunter biden did not consider himself to be an addict at the time he filled out that form, that he may have been addicted before and after but that he wasn t, and the question asks, are you addicted to drugs and so if he were to testify, he could say i did not believe i was addicted to drugs at that time. that could be enough to create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors. on the other hand, when you testify, it puts into play anything that might tend to impeach your credibility, so any prior inconsistent statement, any bias that you might have, any bad things you ve ever done before come into play that would otherwise be not told to the jury, so that is a balance that the defendant really has to decide for himself based on the advice he gets from his lawyer. and barbara, if hunter decides not to testify, where does that leave his defense? it could be that they are done, and i think it leaves that were most cases really end, which is arguing that the prosecution has not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt so i think what the defense would argue is that although they don t really contest what happened, that yes, he did buy this gun, all the facts that happened, that he was using drugs and all the dates that have been introduced, he did not believe himself to be an addict at that time. proving a defendant s intent and knowledge and mind-set is always the hardest thing for a prosecutor, because you can t read another person s mind is so much of the testimony has been that you know, you didn t see him on that day. you didn t know if he was using on that day. there certainly has been testimony that he was using right up around that day so it requires a little bit of circumstantial evidence for the jury to find guilt beyond a reasonable doubt but it seems like there is plenty of evidence there from which they could draw that inference. let s turn to donald trump s criminal convention. the judge sent a letter to both sides yesterday about a social media, reporting to preview the guilty verdict. how seriously do you take this potential claim of a jury week? not at all. it is interesting. many courts have these, which are unmoderated message boards where people can comment. they were set up with the idea that you could engage in good public discourse but of course there are all kinds of people out there who engage in mischief and worse, so this person has said oh, my cousin says a verdict is coming. i think the judge here, out of an abundance of caution, wanted to be up front with it and not try to hide it. certainly there would be people out there who would point to this as some sort of conspiracy that the fix was in, and so the judge has disclosed this to the parties so that if they want to explore this, they may do so. manhattan district attorney alvin bragg told the house judiciary committee he will come testify about the case but not until after trump s sentencing. should brag actually show up? of the two abortion cases, that s the one i m most optimistic about. i think that they will leave it alone? that s correct. almost half of all abortions in the u.s. are performed with mifepristone and if they accept the lower coats reasoning to bennett so many other drugs would be banned. these guys don t like abortion but they don t want to ban antibiotics. that s the good news on abortion there. thank you for the help. don t worry, i ll spoil it in just a second. exactly the next one is whether federal law regulating hospitals trumps abortion bans when it comes to performing emergency abortions. i m worried about this case. there is a federal law that does not refer specifically to abortions but it says that if you go to an emergency room and you have a medical emergency they have to stabilize your health condition so if the appropriate treatment is on abortion, the law right now says you have a right to an abortion. i think based on the oral argument, they are likely to write that out of the statute or at least put some kind of limits on it so that people who need life-saving or health saving abortions will be able to get them anymore. now, here is the case that i don t think a lot of people even know about, and this is euphemistically known as the> case and this is whether to overturn the landmark supreme court ruling in the case that gave federal agencies leeway to interpret the law. sounds very dry, but explain why this case, to your mind, is the most important case decision. this is most hypertechnical but also the most important. there are scads of federal laws that delegate power to a federal agency. everything from how mac how much emissions come from power plants to who gets overtime pay is controlled by federal agencies. chevron is a case from the reagan era that said courts should generally let agencies do what they need to do and defer to them. what the court is likely to do here is essentially give itself a veto power over everything the agencies do, so it s not just at the huge transfer of power and a huge transfer of power from the democratic biden administration to a supreme court that has a 6-3 republican majority. to your point about regulating antibiotics, that would give them purview over the fda, right? potentially. the fda has its own statute, which is different than the regulatory regime that concerned chevron but what we seen from the supreme court overall, they ve been making up all these things with names like the major questions doctrine that lets them interfere with agency so. in the u.s. versus rohini case allowing domestic abusers to have access to firearms, will the supreme court make that happen, let that happen? someone to say yes, and someone to not detract from his ticket or in the case of bergen, someone who could write a really big check to support tom s campaign and what bergen has going for him as we could go all the way to november for the nation knows who this guy is. maybe he is a very nice guy. we saw him try to be somewhat reasonable during the primary. we know he has high marks as governor but donald trump is looking for somebody to fall in line. marco rubio has long been my dark house horse. he s now moved up. he s in the final four because he played the politics of donald trump right. he didn t relitigate his flip- flop for the past eight years, he just flopped. he reminds nikki haley voters that there are people like nikki haley still supporting donald trump but the vice president is not going to change. the vice presidential nominee is not going to change donald trump s behavior nor the parties platform. what the country should hope for is somebody capable of governing should donald trump end up not being able to serve. so, alencia, of those four people , who do you think he s going to pick? n word. the spokesperson from the trump campaign has denied the story calling it completely fabricated but trumps disrespect for black men was evident when president obama was in the white house. trump actively undermined obama s legitimacy by promoting the racist brother lie that he was not born in hawaii, but can you. now, he s doing it to quentin foltz and michael tyler and i m here to call it out. don t ask for our votes in one breath then denigrate someone who looks like us in the next. but, let s be real. this is not about getting our votes. it s about setting up a permission structure for white voters to cast a ballot for him. after all, how can he be racist if he s asking for their vote, right? wrong. joining me now, msnbc legal analyst charles coleman junior, civil rights attorney and host of the charles coleman podcast. charles, i wanted you to be with me in the segment specifically because of that pin you where every day and every show. what does that pin say? yes, this is my black brilliance pen and i m so glad you asked about because for me as a black man who is a professional who walks in different spaces that in many cases, i find myself being the only one of many. i am someone who understands the importance of affirming myself and my brilliance because as is the case with quentin and michael, i can expect that even as i have done the work, even as i have gotten the title, is an as we have ascended through the ranks that other people are going to affirm it as well so it s a soft affirmation and an affirmation for people like you, as well, who find themselves trying to make their way in worlds that are often not friendly to us. what you say to that question saying how could donald trump be racist, you know, if he s going for their votes? why is that that s not good enough. this is a very nuanced question because i think what people have to understand when they re talking about black men and their voting patterns, particularly as it relates to the selection, the biden campaign is battling two major campaigns. the first one is misinformation. there are a lot of voters who are misinformed or underinformed about the progress that administration has made on their accomplishments and in some cases, they ve been told wrong information. the other thing they are battling, is regardless what it is you re saying, people are going to vote how they feel and that s why it s even more important that outreach occur on a proactive level. if you are talking about, for example, a record low and unemployment of black men but that low is still higher than the national average and higher than other white men, then it still feels like your last. it looks do we have charles? let me buffer for a second. there you go. real quick, finish the last part of your answer, charles. what i was saying is that it is something the biden campaign has to be aware of, regardless of the notion of racism in terms of how donald trump tries to siphon off voters from a pretty solid democratic block. that is an important point people have to understand. people are going to vote how they feel more than anything else. and i hope people feel that they should not vote for somebody who says vote for me, well you know, around the corner is denigrating people who look just like them because you are setting yourself up for failure. charles coleman junior, thank you very much. sorry the conversation was so quick. i hope to see you soon. or of the saturday show on msnbc after a break. msnbc after a break. blackwell. thank you for joining us this morning. president biden begins the state visit portion of his trip to france. it starts with the welcome ceremony, which president biden is expected to depart for soon and then the ceremony will begin at the octave try-on. then there will be a parade, precession to the lose, a palace where biden, french president emmanuel macron will attend a working lunch and both leaders are expected to give statements to the press before macron welcomes the president. and the first lady to the famous musee d orsay for a statement dinner. the close ties between the u.s. and france will be on full display today as biden continues to push his message of saving democracy and freedom following his d-day anniversary speech friday cnn senior white house correspondent kayla tausche is live and paris this morning. hello, kayla. we are expecting to see the president at the moment for this welcome ceremony. a walk us through what we will see today well, hello, or should we say bones zhou are from paris, amara today after a point in few days in normandy, the red carpet is now being rolled out in paris where president biden and president macron will now engage in a series of events to deepen the collapse variation between the two countries on a number of fronts, you will see them momentarily arriving at the arctic triomphe with local school children standing by them, they will travel to the elysee palace where they will have a working lunch. the two liters there are expected to discuss two issues. in particular in great detail, the ongoing wars in gaza, where president macron crown has broken with president biden and the ongoing war in ukraine where president macron here in europe has taken something of a leadership position, trying to galvanize the rest of europe to spend more on their collective defenses to produce more, of manufacture, more domestic weapons. in their own countries rather then outsource them and potentially have depleted supplies if there is a potential that war moves past ukraine into europe that is going to be one of the discussions that the two liters have today. and how does support the war in ukraine for the long haul, they re going to be preparing essentially joint positions to go into the g77 but next week and the natives summit that will happen next month. we re also expecting them to discuss climate change, artificial intelligence, and other matters of commercial importance at that state dinner tonight, which has been moved to the elysee palace from the musee d orsay. we expect to luminaries from the business and diplomatic role to be on hand for president macron to fed president biden and a relationship that has deepened over the course of president biden s terms. the two leaders had a very high-profile falling out early in biden s term when he chose to essentially sign up with australia and the united kingdom to partner on the production of nuclear submarines for the indo-pacific where eight french contractor had previously been partnered to build some of those submarines. they were essentially excluded from that partnership and it took several months to bridge that rift now, after sharing a bond over several common goals, common themes, common ideals, the need to defend europe, the need to secure for europe, and the need to essentially protect the west and western ideology. they have grown much closer, but certainly president macron is keen to hear about president biden s prospects for reelection and whether as president biden has said, america is still back, amara i ll take, it kayla tausche, force there in paris. thank you very much, president biden commemorated the 80th anniversary of d-day with a speech in normandy. biden drew on the heroism of the us army rangers who scaled the cliffs of pointe-du-hoc on d-day in 1944 to urge americans to think for this either of the fight for democracy as a cause greater than themselves. and cautioned against isolationism not just to honor those who showed such a remarkable bravery on that day, june 6, 1944. it s listen to the echoes of their voices to hear them because they are summing us. and are summing us now. they ask us what will we do? they re not asking us to scale these cliffs, but they re asking us to stay true to what america stands for they re not asking us to give or risk our lives. but they are asking us to care for others and our country more than ourselves they re not asking us do their job they re asking us to do our job to protect freedom in our time, to defend democracy, to stand up aggression abroad. and at home be part of something bigger than ourselves. joining us now is daniel littmann, white house correspondent for politico. good morning to you, daniel. thanks. good morning for being with us. so let s talk about that speech that we heard from biden up on that famed clifftop obviously, there was some echoes of reagan s address at that same location in 1984 we heard biden there make his case for america s leadership in the world, but he also had a political pitch for those of us here at home. what did you make of what he had to say though he did not mention trump specifically? yeah, he was never going to mention donald trump by name. that would be a big headline because that would be a qbi accused of politicizing this historic memorial to these fall heroes and the people who actually were successful in storming the beaches. and so he has to walk a fine line between reminding americans and the world of democracies challenges today it s one of the top issues on the ballot in terms of what people of both sides think without making it too political and he can t make his entire election pitch all about democracy, given that a lot of americans face more common concerns about pain for bills paying for food and gas. and so they re not going about their lives thinking about democracy all day long. what do you think the white house is hoping will come up today s state visit with the french president well i think, the white house wants to send a message that the u.s. and france are aligned totally on ukraine. tried to see if they can move the ball forward in getting piece in gaza and israel. and i think they want also remind americans of the problem progress that they ve accomplished in terms of pushing back russia from ukraine. they ve had they have rare. this is one of their top foreign policy victories. but it s still uncertain and trump has said he is kind of less in zelensky s corner and people on the right are very skeptical of having a very drawn-out war and it s taken a long time to get weapons back to ukraine. and so they ve had to they ve had some tough spots in terms of zelenskyy is aides were saying, hey, one speech in normandy is not going to to help us out too much. we need weapons, we need training for pilots. if you look, just over the past several months, of course, macron and biden have been aligned when it comes to foreign policy, when it comes to the big picture with ukraine and obviously trying to prevent putin from expanding his empire. and of course the war in israel. but macron has taken a different approach and the way he thinks the western world should defend ukraine and also the way that he has condemned israel more publicly. what will you be looking for when it comes to their joint statement? well, they usually work these things out, weighing advance and there s not gonna be that much daylight between the two liters on major themes, the u.s. france or are huge allies. but i m going to what s interesting is that macron s team wanted a press conference joint press conference with biden. they turned that down. there is issues about an logistical issues they ve also had disagreements about china, france, macron has been more warm towards president xi and france has wants to maintain their commercial relationship with china more than the u.s. and i expect that to be talked about a little bit in their joint statement and in their private meeting what about their political calculations as both leaders meet today, i mean, they re both suffering low approval ratings, right? so if you could just give us context on both their perspectives as they have this meeting well, most people don t vote based on foreign policy or a meeting with a foreign leader, not as many french americans who are looking at this relationship, but i think that macron and many european leaders are afraid about biden s political standing they don t want to deal with donald trump one more this, is someone who has said to vladimir putin, you can do whatever the hell you want. if those, if countries are not paying their nato dues and so that is something that is macron can t endorse biden, but he s giving him a bear hug during an election year and this is biden s only state visit abroad during the seizure. and so of course it has good timing. but europe is afraid that it s going to get abandoned by trump, who is going to be more isolationist if he wins reelection, what is significant that you have president biden on this state visit during a very busy election year, daniel moment in israel s war with hamas today, benny gantz, a key member of the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu s war cabinet is expected to announce whether he will go through with his vow to leave the israeli government at a popular former defense minister said last month that he and his national unity the party would resign unless netanyahu came up with a plan for gaza s postwar future as well as bringing home the hostages. cnn has been wiedemann is an beirut for us and ben today was gantz s deadline for a naval plan do we have any idea if he may have changed his mind about resigning amara before we get to the question of benny gantz s political future, we re receiving reports from gaza that there s a major israeli military operation in the central part of the gaza strip focused on the nuseirat refugee camp and bidded bella were told that the main hospital they re the an aqsa martyrs hospital has already received 16 bodies and there are reports of hundreds of people injured, including many women and children. now, regarding benny gantz, last month, he said on the 8th of june he would withdraw from the war cabinet if prime minister benjamin netanyahu did not come up with some sort of plan for a post-war arrangement in gaza so to speak, today is 8 june and all indications are that he s going ahead with this it s resignation we understand that this evening at 8:00 p.m. local time, he will be holding a press conference and the expectation is that he will announce his withdrawal. now, he his party is not part of the the ruling coalition led by netanyahu. he joined the israeli war cabinet after 7 october, really, is part, a, part of a unity government. however, he has had differences his with prime minister netanyahu for many months. now he has been pressing for some sort of end to the war in gaza. but netanyahu doesn t seem to be in a great hurry to do that. now, we understand, however, that both of them basically agreed that they don t want the creation of a palestinian state something that president biden has pushed for eventually. and neither of them is in favor of the palestinian 40 running gaza after the war. nonetheless guns has had better relations with the biden administration. then the prime minister netanyahu gantz has actually gone to washington in defiance of the wishes of the prime minister but the fact that his party is not part of the ruling coalition means that his departure isn t necessarily going to result in the fall of the netanyahu government. it may however mean that the extremists in his cabinet will have even more influence on the prime minister timur emmer up, victor been wiedemann thank you so much. within our scene and military analysts, kernel cedric latent and cnn political and national security analyst david sanger is also a new york times white house national security correspondent and the author of a new cold war s, china s rise, russia s invasion and america struggled to defend the west, gentlemen, welcome, good to see you, colonel, let me start with you and kind of put together the news that we got from the top with ben wiedemann. and this expected departure of benny gantz does his departure dramatically change the execution of the war by the idf? said that there could be more extremist who have louder voices within this coalition of netanyahu s. what does the war cabinet without gantz look like on the ground? well, good morning, victor. i think it looks less moderate and if you can use the term moderate in quotation marks because the way the idf has conducted this effort, it, this war effort in gaza, it s really doesn t look like it s a an operation if they re handling with kid gloves, they re using brute force tactics in many instances and ben described at the top of his port there are still very major operations going on. so in the short term, the departure of the potential departure of defense minister against will not change those operations. and in fact, it could basically exacerbate debate the tensions that are already very high between the civilian population in gaza and the idf. so i think these are the kinds of things that we have to look for. i think that against this departure may result in even less moderate approach. when it comes to the conduct of the war david, betty guys gave netanyahu and ultimatum. he wanted to hear the plan to get the hostages back to israel. and what is the plan for a post-war gaza if he didn t get that, he was out on june 8th. he s not getting that and we ll get to that a little later. but what s the white? get house view of this likely departure well, on one hand, they are completely in gantz s camp. here it s the white house that has been pressing for a plan not only a short-term plan on the military sayyed, but an end game plan here for how gaza would be administered, for how long israeli troops would remain, four, how do you define the defeat of hamas? because as we learned after 911, you never completely defeat a terror group. obviously new members joined and so forth. but you want to get to a zero point, which president biden thinks he israelis arad right now, where the terror group cannot launch another major attack which of course is just what the president said the other day. so gantz s had much more of a direct channel back-and-forth with the pentagon, with secretary, lloyd austin, the defense secretary certainly with jake sullivan, and national security adviser and his departure is actually going to make it a little bit harder for the administration to talk to the war cabinet there are accustomed to ganz. he used to run the military. they consider him to be somebody who thinks and military terms and it s going to leave them more dependent on talking to netanyahu. kernel weight and cnn has learned that the cia is circulating a report that concludes a netanyahu is likely to defy the u.s. demand for the plan. the plan that benny gantz once as well about what happens after the war his belief is that he can avoid an exodus of military leaders, of members of the coalition if he speaks in vague terms here about what he wants to do next for in gaza how does that, if at all influence what the us does as it relates to military support, financial support for israel well, this is going to be very interesting question, victor, because it may not be of the great things about this is that as we watched the two presidents lay the wreath to add the tomb of the unknown soldier s in france, in paris let s be honest the way in which they re doing this together is kind of the way the country s really want to act in terms of ukraine now, when it comes to the actual fact of the matter, there on slightly different timetables. so it s not anything that can t be bridged but one of the things that the french have announced is that they are going to provide training in mirage 2000 jet fighters for the ukrainian armed forces and that is going to make a really big difference. in the war effort in terms of beefing up ukraine s air force that will be in conjunction with the team training that is already happening. i not only in the united states, but in denmark and there s also supposed to be a trading center in romania that is being set up with french health so these are the kinds of things that will be a part of the effort. now, in terms of artillery and air defenses, the french have provided and in the process of providing even more weaponry in that, in that area to the ukrainians the united states, of course, as also do this in the preponderance of military aid is still coming from the united states, but basically france is leading the european collision to support the ukrainian war effort and i think president mecole seize this as being really a very important bulwark that he s setting up an essence of buffer zone with ukraine at the center of this buffer between an expansionist, russia desire by russia to move forward to consolidate its power and in essence to challenge nato, france recognizes that any challenges to nato are really challenges to its sovereignty and instability to note, maintain its independence as a european power. but it also means that the french are willing to to some extent to shoulder more of a burden, at least in the political sense. now in the 5-methyl, since that s a different, a different issue nic robertson to you now, both of these men are watching the calendar and they know that the us is about five months out from that s not funnel election and the former president donald and germany and the baltic states and the new members like finland and sweden is that putin would massively try to exploit what he would perceive as a weakened nato because it wouldn t have the united states support that the money going into ukraine and the weapons going into ukraine could be faltering. so the clock ticks. there is nothing i drew. these leaders are perhaps less that president macron can do and maybe more that president biden can do in terms of finding ways to win the narrative and win the election in november. but the calendar is against both man and there are no assurances today that president biden can really give him emmanuel macron or any other european leader that are going to assuage their fears that an isolationist, the united states could be a reality they re dealing with by this time next year, of course, emmanuel macron tried to have a strong and positive i m robust relationship with then-president trump. but even that, despite his best efforts, faltered along the way. so there s a real realization macron has dealt with a president trump and knows the realities of the difficulty of how that relationship could be. so it s hard to it s hard to know what precisely the nature of the conversation, but undoubtedly it s going to be a topic and undoubtedly macron would look to biden any assurance and reaffirmation. biden s come confidence that he invasion of normandy and world war ii. throughout the visit, the president has emphasized the threat to our democracy, not just here at home but also abroad. it is as urgent as it was 80 years ago. joining us now to discuss is staff writer for the atlantic and msnbc contributor and former homeland security and counterterrorism advisor to vice president mike pence, welcome to you both. this was quite the week for president biden to stand on the global stage in a way that he did to talk about the urgency of this moment in democracy and relating it back to history. what was your take on what the president had to say and how do you think it resonated, not just with our european allies but here at home? there we go. i get it. i think he did an excellent job and he is an excellent leader on the world stage. it was critical to show that face to the world and also to americans. you know, i think michael, you know, he did have sort of that reaganesque quality and i thought it was important to talk about, you know, the people that have served in the military, the lives that have been given to freedom and that is really what is at stake here. you know, i saw some criticism on fox and other channels, why isn t he attacking trump in this moment? he never mentioned trupp. he never mentioned him by name, i don t believe. i think what he needed to say is that this is a bigger choice, bigger choice then each and every one of us, it is a choice about what do we want our future to be as a country? let s honor those lives that served. important stuff. olivia, the words of president biden were so poignant, i thought spot on, let s play a little bit of what he talked about when it comes to hardships of american democracy. this is the president in normandy, france on friday with emmanuel macron. we talk about democracy. american democracy. we often talk about the ideals of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. what we don t talk about is how hard it is, how many ways we are asked to walk away, how many instincts are to walk away, the most natural instinct is to walk away. to be selfish, to force our will upon others, to seize power and never give up. american democracy asked the hardest of things, to believe in something bigger than ourselves. does anybody think michael donald trump could have given that speech? alicia, i don t know. it is a rhetorical question. it speaks to all the reporting you have been doing, which is the impossible to watch president biden on the world stage without doing a compare and contrast, not just us, people who show up on cable news but as an american watching at home and certainly if you are an ally watching. yeah, the themes biden is sounding in the speeches and throughout these events commemorating d-day are very familiar themes from past administrations and frankly, both parties. to olivia s point, sounds like ronald reagan, george h. bush, george w. bush, not a very popular president abroad. in certain things, there has been a bipartisan consensus in this country for a long time. one of those things is the important aspect of the transatlantic relationship and the fact it is rooted in western democratic values and belief that america is supposed to align with other democracies and that alliance is a safeguard for the rest of the world and what is interesting is that speech biden gave would have been completely uncontroversial and unmemorable, you know, just a few short years ago. now it is like, you know, right in the middle of a massive domestic political debate about what role america should play in the world and what it does to its allies. that compare and contrast is really start this year. you touched on that, mckay, actually, in a great observation of your fears, the irony of the obsession with the election is that the people who decide this are not thinking about your much at all. in part, it is because many americans have not seen the need for nato in their lifetime, despite the fact that this september 11th terrorist attacks were the only time article 5 has been invoked. you touched on a very important point about disconnection. actually and ironically, something george bush 43 warned about on the heels of 9/11. we cannot forget this moment. we feel good, we are unified now, we understand we are standing in defense of our values and we are prepared to prosecute the case against terrorism but all of that is dissipated, that connection to those institutions that hold all of this together and i think biden, being there, and saying what he said was important, but you point out the fact that there is still this tension, this disconnect that needs to be reconciled between us and europe, between our role in the world and the rest of the world and how we, as americans, look at these institutions. so i was traveling throughout europe this spring and talking to european officials and diplomats and the thing that kept coming up is this real sense of uncertainty about what america is anymore, right? because for 75 years, since world war ii, your even when they disagreed with people we elected, even then they didn t really like certain administrations, they trusted in america to be a reliable ally. america was the linchpin to the nato alliance, it was going to be a generally responsible member of the global community, right? that first trump term really did damage to america s reputation and to the trust america could be relied upon. again and again, i would hear these european officials sort of ask me, what does it mean that donald trump is currently leading in the polls? what s wrong with y all? because they finally remember the u. s. that stormed the beaches of normandy, that is the your america a lot of europeans still remember and we wonder how many europeans remember that. to crystallize that point, olivia, let s listen to something liz cheney put out, called our great task. take a listen. one s country is worth dying for. democracy is worth dying for because it is the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. all of you love liberty. all of you were willing to fight tyranny. you knew the people of your countries with were behind two. today we give thanks for all that was gained on the beaches of normandy. we remember what was lost with respect, admiration and love. this freedom and these hopes are with the heroes of dj fought and died for. america deserves a president as good and steadfast as our nation. a president of character, driven by a noble purpose, one who honors the sacrifices of our troops, not a man consumed by spite, revenge and self-pity. you don t need to say the name, olivia, to know who it is they are talking about there. yeah, you don t. at this time, it reminds me of trump saying these people are losers and every time i think about that, a president of the united states would ever say something like that, my stomach turns. watching that ad and thinking about my time during the trump administration working in national security, i think what lacked among some of the inner circles, including trump himself was a greater purpose of service and i don t think that any of these people that is in his inner circle, i am talking about his enable us and him, understand a greater calling, understand something that you belong to that is bigger than yourself and bigger than your selfishness of what these people have exhibited because most of them never did serve. they don t understand military service, they don t understand the intelligence community, they don t understand public service. i think it is a threat to not remind ourselves to what the president, as what they stand for and what they represent and what they will eventually do. a reminder, we will likely pull out of nato because those discussions were had during the trump administration. the reason the world is so concerned about what is about to happen should he return to office is because i was in those meetings when we were having serious discussions with warren hendrix, where the narrative for a daily basis, where he would say, i thought we agreed to this and it would change. we did this on venezuela. i am telling you, i covered africa for vice president pence, i sat in these discussions where there would be a commitment made and they would pull the rug out from under him. that is not how you do diplomacy. that is not how you do these diplomatic relations. they are so critical and so challenging. olivia, people at home may not appreciate fully what you are saying because literally all the thing is you do this, i will do that and we come to an agreement. people need to keep their word, that is it. not even just the idea but the fact, we often talk about it but the choice, as alicia noted, the stark choice that is before the american people could not have been made more clear today, this week, frankly, with what we saw from president biden juxtaposed with the republican nominee. the nato , 80 years ago when ad happened, nato was not established. was allied troops that came together, the world came together and took the beaches of normandy. it was that time in normandy that turned the tide to end world war ii, it led to the establishment of nato world cooperation years later and we are in a severe moment, the president talked about linking ad to what is happening in ukraine and the fight right now , i want to play that for you and see how you guys talk about it on the other side. between dictatorship and freedom, it is unending. here in europe, we see one stark example , ukraine has been invaded by a tyrant for domination. ukrainians are fighting with extraordinary courage, suffering great losses, but never backing down. the united states and nato, a coalition of more than 50 countries, standing strong with ukraine. we will not walk away. mckay, it sounds to me like the president is standing in front of the world trying to convince people, making everyone feel okay that as long as i am here, we will be standing with ukraine but as the time magazine article said about a week ago about american presidents, they must earn their mandate and we don t know if joe biden will earn his. yeah, that s right. again, going throughout europe and talking to these european officials, the thing i heard again and again was, look , the biden administration has been great. they are doing everything they can to say the right things and they are trying to reassure allies who were around during trump s administration. at the end of the day, the biden administration can only do so much. i even spoke to officials in the biden administration in washington who say we are ambassadors out there, trying to reassure allies, they got their talking points. these people in europe are smart, right? they know the promises that joe biden is making only go so far and, you know, because the outcome of the election is going to foreign correspondent ref sanchez joins us now. what are you hearing about the condition of the hostages and the next steps in the coming days and how will this come together? reporter: michael, the idea is that these four hostages freed from gaza are in good condition medically. we have seen pictures of noa argamani, the viewers will remember, that young woman being taken into gaza from the music festival on october 7th on the back of that motorcycle, her hands outstretched to her boyfriend, who was also being kidnapped. he was marched away into gaza. we have seen images of her this morning at a hospital in the greater tel aviv area. you can see her there, reuniting her with her father. it is extraordinary to think that eight months and one day after she was kidnapped, she is smiling, she is laughing. she is speaking with her family. she spoke on the phone earlier today with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. it was very interesting, guys, she said in that phone call, i haven t spoken in hebrew in such a long time, which suggests she was being held on her own, away from other hostages. that does appear to chime in with the report we are getting from the israeli military, detailed, obviously, still emerging. just setting the scene here, this was in the center of gaza in broad daylight at 11:00 a.m. the israeli military says hundreds of soldiers took part, there was a part from air and by sea. they say they stormed two separate buildings that we believe noa argamani was being held on her own in one of those buildings and the three male hostages were being held in a separate building. at least one israeli soldier was seriously wounded in this raid but this seems to be the single greatest success in terms of hostage rescue we have had, that is ruled has had in the course of this eight months. you will remember, guys, only three other hostages had been rescued alive up until this point. today four hostages in just a couple of hours. now you can see noa argamani on your screen. she is speaking to israeli president isaac herzog, who was telling her just how overjoyed his rule is to see her say, to see her home. there have been celebrations across this country today. the lifeguards on the beach in tel aviv announcing the news over a loudspeaker. people jumping up and cheering in front of the mediterranean on this saturday here in is ruled. we met the father of noa argamani on october 8, less than 24 hours after his daughter had been kidnapped by hamas. he is at her side right now. her mother, as far as we know at this point, is not. her mother is dying of brain cancer. for these eight months she has been telling the world her dying wish was to see her daughter once again. she is in very serious condition at another hospital in tel aviv, but we believe mother and daughter are going to be reunited later on today. noa s boyfriend, who you see in that video from october 7th being marched by a crowd of militants into gaza, remains one of the 120 hostages still being held. this is obviously a moment of joy, while this is obviously a moment of joy for noa and her family, her partner remained inside gaza, his fate unknown at this hour, as is the fate of so many of those 120 other hostages. well there is celebration here in israel, there is mourning in gaza right now because there are reports of at least 50 people killed during this israeli raid. we know there was intense bombardment by israeli aircraft, by israeli ships to cover the special forces and moved in. we don t know how many of those 50 or so killed were militants, how many of them were civilians. this is just an enormous, enormous moment here in is ruled. it is really hard to overstate the happiness here. one israeli friend told me the whole because he was afraid his hair would become disheveled. remember, that day it was raining. he did not want to go to the cemetery because it was raining. more importantly, to his staff, his senior staff he remarked, quote, why should i go to that cemetery? it s filled with losers. and then he referred to the more than 1800 marines who lost their lives as suckers for getting killed. olivia, in the context of the work you have done in foreign- policy, what does it mean to contrast, and i think it is important for the american people to get this contrast in leadership, a man who refuses to visit the men who sacrificed themselves for freedom and democracy on foreign shores, right, because he didn t want to get his hair messed up and looked at them as suckers and losers versus a president who stands on that hollowed ground and reminds us of our call to destinies, to destiny as citizens of the world, that this fight for democracy is an important battle and we must be engaged in it together. okay, i think it is a critical reminder of what trump views value to be in a situation like this, which is himself and no one else. there is no interest in military baller. he doesn t think about the lives of these people and going into critical international situations, where you are making decisions on troops, when you are making decisions on intelligence officers and what is the next step, deliberations that are very calculated, i want americans to remember that. these are your sons, your daughters, your brothers, sisters, moms and dads and remember that there is the potential to have a president back in the oval office that will make those decisions along the way where he will have complete disregard for what it truly means when these people deploy and what happens to them. in other ways, he has no regard or respect for the fact of what it means to serve, right? joining us now are the directors of the documentary of the sixth , award-winning filmmakers. this is the best documentary i have ever seen. i have never watched prior to this more than five minutes of footage from january 6th. this is , this centers the people. i just want to play this piece from the documentary, a staffer who worked at the white house and congress and talks about assuming the worst. i had to assume the worst. i had to assume these people were armed. you kind of go into survival mode. i remember essentially casing the office, what can i use as a weapon? i remember feeling like, whatever is in here that is heavy is what i will have to use you know? if it comes to that. andrea, when you look at this as a complete scenario, right, from start to finish, you now have president trump out here talking about giving basically solace to those insurrectionists by pardoning them and making the case that the january 6th committee members should be indicted. when you look at what you guys captured, juxtaposed against that background, what is your reaction? what should we know that donald trump clearly doesn t know about what happened that day? thank you. what i want, i want people to know what we now know. i think that we had the luxury of being able to spend over a year plus with our team looking and scouring the footage, finding the right people, finding six people who just went to work that day to tell the story and that what we stitched together from beginning of day to the end was one of the most violent, heartbreaking, gut punching days in american history. people think they know january 6th but they don t. they don t know the scale of the violence. everyone that was in the capitol that day thought they were going to die. there was the sense of 10,000 plus people surrounding this building and breaking in. it is criminal. it was violent. i think people just saw this in pieces. they don t quite understand the mass in the scale and the threat. we are so lucky more people did not die at the end of that day. we are eternally grateful to the people that did their job that day and the next day, who served in the legislature, congress, journalism and law enforcement. we should be thankful of the fact law enforcement is being booed at and hissed, they actually did their job and protecting the lives of the lawmakers that are now turning their back on what happened that day is despicable. you know? there is a code and ethic to every single person that we profile in this film about how they do their job and thank goodness they did. the outcome could have been so much worse if they hadn t. to that point about law enforcement, here is the photographer talking about the picture he took. if they wanted to kill him, they would have killed him. the man pleaded for his life. he told people he had kids. it is kind of crazy. if i had to put a dollar on it, i would say everybody was like, blue lives matter, blue lives matter. [ bleep ] didn t matter that day. i felt for him. i have a son. i thought about what it would feel like for him if some weak happened to me, you know? this is a another human being. part of what i appreciated is that you centered the voices of those who were impacted on that day but their reflections about the crowd and who showed up and the inconsistencies around their theories of justice, sean, are laid bare. yeah. we, i think it was important for us to give a voice to the people that went through that day and what they went through and personalize it. i think it is really important. i think, with the crowd there, we also did something i think was important. we listened in our area found. you hear things in our film you don t here in our own soundbites and it talks about, he is talking about being right next to this man pleading for his life, pleading because he has kids. you also hear how he is capturing all the different things the crowd is saying, the crowd is saying, take their guns. the crowd is saying, you are going to die tonight with such conviction you can hear it in their voice that you believe it. i think people need to take this all in as a beginning of the day to the end of the day through the personal experiences of the six people that we follow and kind of decide what you think about the people that were in the crowd that day, what their intentions were and what could have happened. what could have happened, i mean, there is a part in the film where former metropolitan police chief conti talks about a phone call that he had, he was part of that with mayor bowser and literally pleading for help from the national guard. the dee was deployed to the capitol to do something to help. the capitol police call for help, the national guard, this call was just, we will play a clip because it is so hard to believe. you wonder what trump would do if he were in office again, we know what he did on january 6th. take a listen. we had a phone call that was can be by myself, the mayor, the district of columbia d.c. national guard, the u. s. capitol police chief where he essentially was pleading for assistance from the national guard. in response to that, whoever on the other side from the representatives from the defense department, the discussion then switched to talking about optics and boots on the ground and what that would look like, which, you know, in a crisis situation, i don t care what it looks like. it looks like help to me. it took hours until the national guard was approved. donald trump put that video out. when he put that video out, people finally did go home. it just really feels like he knew what he was doing. that is a big part of it for me. when you step back, what the sub story i think you guys captured here is the other stuff that was going on in the face of all of the drama and the tragedy on the hill, the stub story was the white house wasn t doing anything. there was no real effort and i think that cut really embraces that part of it. when you are putting this story line together and you are talking it through, how did you capture that? you said, this is the other side of this. we could show you, you know, donald trump and the roosevelt room sitting there watching television eating a hamburger. you know that is what is going on. you know that was the rest of the story, why the d.c. police were so animated about the lack of response from federal law enforcement at the highest level. yeah, it was a different type of film for us. we had this huge kind of forensic timeline in our office. we were looking at all the different things, all the things playing out that day and when we stepped back and we said, where is the national guard? we know that, we know what happened. i know what happens, i see the national guard, they are always around. they do what they are supposed to do. we were just scratching our heads. why are we talking about this? it was actually andrea that so we needed to do a deep dive in that and then the chief started talking about that and he said, you know, he basically said the national guard is not here and i will do it and do my duty. the capitol is under attack. i will do whatever i can. i will get local law enforcement to come and help. that is what they did. why are not people talking about this? d.c. police for for hours, especially in the tunnel, four or five hours they were underhand to hand combat. police arrest people in under 10 minutes. they are not trained to fight hand to hand combat like that, you know? you could argue that the powers that be that had the authorization to release and deploy the guard to help weren t aware of what was going on. the entire world was watching what was going on. i think that is what is so upsetting. why wait that long?
