power. the president hinted that mubarak would step down and he didn't. he seemed to dig in. 20 seconds of his speech about ceding power and the rest wrapped in the defiant language. when vice president suleiman came out and seemed to side with mubarak and doubled down. over the night, across government, all levels of government, there was, as they say here, a seeking of clarification, trying to understand what exactly had happened here, was this a cosmetic gesture? was this mubarak trying to save face or a genuine transfer of power? by this morning u.s. officials felt a true transfer of power had taken place but not until the statement, read live on egyptian tv and seen around the world in which he said mubarak is stepping down, did they know what was about to transpire. so knew the question is, where

weeks. he's reviled among the population. there was a report the past couple of hours that the state department is putting together an aid package to help the opposition in egypt. that is a disasterous idea. by helping opposition, we would be helping people that we like and approve of. that will almost, by deaf significan definition exclude the muslim brotherhood. that's what we dpod in iran. we got the side we didn't want came to power. if we do the same thing here we could end up with the side we don't want coming to power. >> according to the information you are reading, i have it in front of me, officials would no not say whether the aid would go directly or indirectly to the muslim brotherhood. we do not know all of the details regarding this aid that the u.s. could send this aid package to help with transition of power and to help with the democracy that these people so desperately want. but what is the balance here, realistical
welcome back. live pictures out of cairo's tahrir square, where we witnessed a revolution, thousands have been pouring in since the announcement president hosni mubarak will step down from power. earlier today, mubarak gave control to egypt's military and a spokesman says it will soon announce a plan to give the people the changes they want. and just a short time ago a doctor, who had been protesting, told nbc's ron allen he just couldn't believe what was happening. >> i was almost hopeless, then all of a sudden it's coming. i can't believe it. it's beyond expression. i can't believe it. finally, after 30 years, 30 years of prooppression.
mubarak last week in response to one of mubarak's statements. he was calling him a patriot, trying to appeal to him, cajole him out of power. once mubarak stood up there and seemed so defy an and gave an am b ambiguous statement, the u.s. reached no point of return with the regime. the u.s. wanted to send a clear signal it was aligning itself with the people, with the protestors, with their democratic aspirations. and as one aide put it to me, we don't want to be on the wrong side of history. we wanted to make it clear we stand with protestors. but there are always varying audiences, and all along, especially when it wasn't clear how this would turn out the white house and the president was very careful in words and public expressions they didn't want to humiliate mubarak. he is for all of his fault a longtime u.s. ally, stabts ilitn
