glad you re here for it. we re going to start a ways back as we sometimes do. when allied soldiers came ashore on the coast of france on the beaches of normandy for the d-day invasion, they opened up a new western front against the nazis in europe. and that of course was a shock to the germans. the operation overlord, the d-day invasion, it relied on the element of surprise. and the germans really were shocked. they had been occupying france for four years at that point. they the installed a collaborationist regime that they assembled from pro-fascist and pro-nazi forces inside france, so the collaborationists and the nazis together were ruling france and they had been for years. there was a french resistance to the nazi rule and the collaborationists, but the nazis and their puppets were definitely in charge. i they were actually heading intoc year five of being in charge. they were really settled in, inf france. and then here comes this shock arrival. this invasion. hundreds of thousands, ultimately millions of allied troops landing on the beaches and the cliffs of the northwest of france. and they are clearly planning to take it all back. the d-day invasion, the allied n invasion, started on june 6th. now, on this date, on june 10th, 1944, just four days into the d-day invasion, the germans were reacting. they had been, of course, shocked by the initial invasion. but a few days into it, they now realized the scale of what they were up against and had started scrambling their units from all over france, turning all the available german troops in france toward the northwest of that country to try to stop the allied advance. and that included a nazi ss panzer division that had been in the south of franz. that division was ordered to essentially traverse the whole length of the country, head north to where the allies were advancing from the beaches of hr normandy. and on their way north through france, toward the new allied front lines, the new western front, this panzer division stopped in a village called oradour. pro-nazi french collaborators had told them, they told this panzer unit that the french resistance was active in this town. and they told them that the french resistance in that town had killed a nazi officer. and in response, that panzer unit decided, yes, they were on their way to the north of france to join the new western front and the, you know, the battle for the whole war, to try to shore up the german lines against the big allied invasion, but they decided on their way e there, they would stop and do something in oradour.g they would destroy that entire village and everyone in it. that panzer unit rounded up every single man, woman, and child in that village. they even rounded up random people who didn t live in the village but were nearby or who had the misfortune to be passing through the village when this nazi unit made this decision.t that nazi unit killed every human being in oradour. or everyone they could find. they killed 643 civilians. a vast majority of them women and children.or they used machine guns and they burned them alive. they looted the entire village, and then they tore down the village as best they could. they razed it. oradour.ed this is what it looks like today. still in ruins. the french decided after the war that they would never rebuild. they would leave the ruins, preserve them as they were left at the end of the war, as a memorial to what the nazis did. and we have these photos of what oradour looks like literally today, because this morning, the president of france and the president of germany visited the ruins at oradour to commemorate what they call the martyrdom of that village, to remember what happened in europe, in france, under fascist occupation. now, this is not the first time that french president emmanuel macron has visited oradour. actually, ten days before he was first elected president, he went there. he visited the village just before he was elected president. he visited in the company of the man who was then the last livini survivor of that massacre.s i said the nazis killed everyone in the village, at least everyone they could find.ge the nazis did kill over 600 civilians that day, but there were about half a dozen people from the village who, against all odds, in a miracle managed by hook or by crook to survive. the last one of the survivors was in his 90s when he brought emmanuel macron to oradour in 2017. that last survivor has since died. but today, macron went back to the site, to show this place, to germany s president. now, in 1944, about six months after oradour happened, the germans were still hanging on. but thanks in large part to the d-day invasion, they knew by the end of 1944 that they were losing. they were losing to soviet forces in the east, for sure. they were also simultaneously losing to the allied forces coming in from the west. once the allies opened that new western front with the d-day invasion, they started pressing their advantage against the nazis everywhere. not only liberating france, they clearly intend to liberate everywhere the nazis have taken over. they re pressing toward germany itself. hitler knows that his military is on the ropes. it cannot sustain the losses they re taking on both the eastern and western fronts. and so about six months after d-day, about six months after oradour, hitler decides he s going to mount a surprise of his own. he decides he s going to mount a huge german counteroffensive in belgium against the allies. the allies are basically closing in on germany s own borders and when hitler musters hundreds of thousands of men to mount a counteroffensive against them in the forests of belgium, it absolutely is a surprise to the allies. nobody thought germany still had it in them. everybody thought not everybody, but a lot of people thought the war was going to be over by christmas that year. where did the germans muster 400,000, 500,000 men to mount this new counteroffensive, but they did. that german counteroffensive started in mid-december 1944. it began a six-week-long battles that would be the single deadliest battle of the entire war for the u.s. military. aside from just the brutal toll of that battle, that was the battle of the bulge, that battle also came with its own astonishing and unforgettable atrocity. it was another german panzer unit much like the one that killed the entire population of that french village. it was an ss panzer unit in belgium. and they ended up in the very outset of that surprise german counteroffensive, they ended up ambushing a bunch of americans. and the result of it was they took custody of a large group of american prisoners of war, unarmed american p.o.w.s. and these p.o.w.s, again, they had surrendered. they had no weapons. the nazis lined up those americans in a field, the americans have no weapons. they have surrendered.ve they have their hands above their heads. they re p.o.w.s, but the nazis just massacred them in the field, they mowed them down with machine gun fire. and like at that village of oradour, what is almost as unbelievable as what the nazis did there was the fact there were somehow miraculously some survivors. there were some american gis who had also been lined up in that field, who nevertheless lived. american gis who played dead, who hid under the dead bodies of their comrades, who managed in the end to drag themselves into the woods to get away. and what happened to them? you will not believe me when i tell you this, but it would not be long before a sitting united states senator would vehemently object to those men giving testimony about what they saw. about what they survived, about what happened to their platoon mates, to the other men in that battalion. the other p.o.w.s who were massacred by those nazis.p. a sitting u.s. senator tried to block the american soldiers who. survived that massacre from t giving testimony about it in congress. he said the american people shouldn t hear it.e he said it would be he inflammatory. w it would inflame the public to against the nazis who killed alf of those unarmed american p.o.w.s.na i find it absolutely insane to think about, but this became a very strange thing in american domestic politics. i mean, there were unrepentant r leftover nazis in germany after the war. they were trying to make the allies and america in particular the real bad guys from world war ii, and maybe that is understandable when you think about unrepentant nazis who just lost the war, but you would not believe it, the zi thing that s amazing is not that there were leftover nazis who were trying to do this. the thing you wouldn t believe is they enlisted a lot of americans to help them in that project. including taking a stand against the american soldiers who survived that p.o.w. massacre ha and demanding that the nazis who did it should be set free. this became a cause celebre in the right wing press at the e time. and it helped launch the national career, the rocketship ascendance of arguably the most radical and controversial figure in republican electoral politics in the last 80 years before donald trump. while he was swimming in these very dark waters, darker than what seems possible for something in mainstream american politics he would go on to lead a movement of millions of followers who were increasingly radicalized by his increasingly radical rhetoric and tactics over time. his fellow republicans were both repelled by him, horrified by him, while they also wanted in on some of the massive political energy and fanatical devotion he attracted. they thought very seriously about putting him forward for the presidency, and the reaction among close observers of him and his tactics look so much like what you re seeing in the american press today about the e fear of a second trump term, you wouldn t believe that it isn t just a straight up rerun. in his time, the people who stood up against him mostly got mowed down in politics by the strength of his fanatical following. that happened for a very long time. until eventually, ultimately, it stopped happening.en and the forces against him prevailed. and i m telling you this for two reasons.ll number one, this is the thing that i have been working on for the past year. my podcast, working on this story, i have been working in general on stories about other v times in our american history that we have dealt with really terrible threats to the country. where we have confronted reallyr radical people with really radical designs to undo the fundamental things that make us who we are as a country who nevertheless get into political power and attract large followings. this has happened to us before.p and the reason i have been working on this for the past couple years, the reason i have been working on these projects is because for me, i feel like i really need to learn this stuff and fast, for me, there is a real urgency to learn these stories now.no from when we have contended with terrible challenges before, ha particularly when we re talking about powerful americans advocating for authoritarianism or just flat out embodying it. particularly when it s about selling factually unhinged conspiratorial lies to the american public and half the public is mortified, mystified by that, but the other half of the public is super energized by it and they not only believe these lies, they kind of become their whole new reason to live. the public gets bifurcated like that into earth one and earth two where some people are based in the reality based community and some people are based in a different place, and that place is emotionally satisfying to them, and radicalizing them, and it takes over their lives. we are living through a moment like that right now with what is ascendant on the american righth but we have lived through it before. and i feel like i m racing to learn these stories about americans who have fought these kinds of fights before us for the simple reason that i feel like i need their ideas about how to fight it. we need their ideas about how to fight these things. we need to see what worked and what didn t when americans faced threats like this before. and it doesn t mean that fighting them always works. sometimes they get away with a lot of this stuff, and sometimes people take on incredible risk and danger to themselves. sometimes people risk their lives or give up their lives to fight these things, but knowing the track record of americans who have stood up against these kinds of dark and authoritarian and anti-democratic forces knowing who else has tried it and what s happened to them is helpful for us calibrating our available responses now. and knowing what to expect when we confront these dark movements. so that is why i have been working on this, and that is why that story is on my mind tonight. but it is also what s on the news right now. i mean, one of the remarkable things about seeing the french president with the german president at the ruins of oradour today in france is that they took that tour of the ruins of that village today, that th preserved memorial to what fascism did in europe, they took that tour this morning. just one day after the german far right and the french far right won shockingly large an proportions of the vote in the h european elections that were held yesterday. in both of those countries, the parties that did so well have ties not only to the old fascist parties of old world war ii era germany and france, they both have current ties, including financial ties, to vladimir putin and russia. when president biden and president macron of france met in france these past few days ma for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of d-day, president biden said that he and president macron agreed on a new plan to seize russian assets inz the g-7 countries and use those seized russian assets to providn even more support to ukraine. as ukraine continues to struggle against the russian invasion of that country. president biden is just back from france for these d-day commemoration ceremonies and from those meetings with e president macron. he s just back but heads back to europe the day after tomorrow to go to the g-sev summit, among other things to rally the other nations to support this new plan, to support ukraine as muc as possible including this new plan that he and macron have just agreed to involving seizing russian assets to help ukraine even more. and, you know, in the american aperture here, what s going on in our politics while president biden is trying to, you know, rally the free world, trying to strengthen our alliances as much as possible to lead collective international will against a rogue dictatorship that has invaded one big european country already and has its sights set on more, here at home, literally while president biden and other american leaders were headed off to europe for the 80th anniversary of d-day, while they were heading off to europe for that, what was happening in the american congress? a fifth of the republicans in congress just voted that we should leave our allies altogether. that we should break up the big western alliance, that we should defund nato. and i think nobody really paid attention to this vote because this legislation was put forward by a very fringe member of congress, a member of congress who is known for her publicity stunts and she s therefore she is easy to ignore. but it wasn t just her.y 46 republicans voted for this thing.ca a fifth of the republicans in congress last week voted to defund nato. don t just forget being the leader of the free world, forget the whole idea of there being a free world at all. they saved that for the anniversary of d-day. 46 republicans voting to defund nato. and as radical as that may seem, particularly when you think about where nato came from and why, the wing of the republican party that is pushing for this stuff, i mean, on its face, it seems unlikely they would have such sway. every few days we get a new mugshot of one of their leading lights because so many of them have been charged with crimes. today, it was their presidential candidate s personal lawyer, wh has had his law license suspended, who is under indictment, rudy giuliani s w mugshot just released today after he was arraigned in arizona. you can put it up on the wall with all of the other maga republican mugshots we have accrued over the past year. their presidential candidate is a convicted felon. today he had to meet with the probation office in new york ahead of his sentences. people at his rallies not only wear tshirts and fly flags that have his mugshot on them, they started carrying signs and wearing shirts that now say rr they re proudly voting for the convicted felon. at a rally this weekend, their presidential candidate described members of the mob of his t supporters who physically w attacked congress and injured dozens of police officers, he described them in a speech this weekend as, quote, warriors. his warriors. people who took part in that mob attack on congress. his warriors. while a few days ago, two police officers who were both badly injured fighting hand to hand with that mob to defend congress, to defend the u.s. capitol, those two police officers were jeered and booed by republicans in the pennsylvania state legislature. they jeered them, turned their backs on them and walked out. these are two officers who survived that attack, they were literally injured fighting for their country, defending our seat of government against a violent attack. but the republicans who jeered at them and turned their backs on them and walked out, they want the attackers freed. and they don t want to hear what these survivors of the attack had to say. don t want to hear from the survivors and the witnesses. you want the attackers set free. we are going through some weird stuff right now. but we have gone through weird stuff before. and i do think that we can learn from it and that we urgently need to. that s why i have been working on all these projects. that s why i ve got this new se podcast out and i hope you listen. but it s not just the distant past. in the very recent past when we got donald trump in the white house in the first place, you might remember what preceded that shock election result here in the united states in 2016. our shock presidential election result in 2016 was preceded that year by some shocking and surprisingly right wing election results in europe. including the brexit vote in e britain which happened just months before trump s surprise presidential victory here. i asked ben rhodes to please join us here tonight in the wake of what is now, again, another round of what seemed to be surprisingly right wing election results in europe this weekend.y was it right in 2016 to see right wing election results in europe as a harbinger of what was coming for us in the fall o 2016? as president biden balances his campaign responsibilities right now with back-to-back trips to europe, he just got back from europe, he heads back to europe again on wednesday. do the election results from europe right now, this weekend, have hallmarks that tell us anything about what to expect here and about how weird this is all going to get?ut president biden clearly sees ouo connections to europe right now as absolutely key to the futureo of the world. does what s going on in european politics right now tell us something to expect about the future of our world here? joining us now is ben rhodes. he s former deputy national security adviser to president obama, cohost of the pod save the world podcast. really great to see you. thanks for making time to be here tonight. good to see you. first, let me ask you for some of our viewers who may not have paid close attention to what was happening in the european elections this weekend, let me ask you two questions about them. do you think they re important for us to pay attention to? and can you just give us a rough characterization of what happened in those elections?za sure. these were elections for the european parliament. e so the european union wide parliament, so the only electiop that takes place every few years in which all of europe votes. it s a good barometer of where opinion is in europe. the two headlines are the far right made noticeable gains in the two largest countries in europe, france and germany.rg in france, the national front party, the far right party that used to be on the fringes of french politics, emerged as by far the largest vote getter in g this election and to build on what you re saying, this is a party that is not only far right, they have ties to russia. they have gotten a $10 million loan from russia in the past decade. in germany, the afd party, which has ties that go back into the kind of neonazi past of germany, they got over 15% of the vote, not a huge total, but very alarming given the source here. i want to be clear, in other parts of europe, the center did hold.ur i think the real concerning factor is in the two most important countries, france and germany, we saw these far right gains. do you think that it s right to look back at 2016 and see some of what was going on in politics in europe as a harbinger for the shock election result we got in the fall of r 2016 when trump won? do you think these election results should be read as a harbinger of what s coming down the pike for us this year? i absolutely do, rachel. the commonality between the brexit vote, the vote by the uk to leave the european union in 2016 and the trump election was that it was a it was a surprise.a people did not think brexit was going to win the campaign and they campaigned on a kind of right wing populist message. the slogan was take back control. they ran against globalists and liberal elites and against immigration and was very trumpy in its message, frankly. it kind of foreshadowed what we ended up dealing with in the fall here. i think the warning in this election, and you ask mead a wa question when i came on to talk about my book a few years ago about far right parties and their commonalities around the world, you asked what lesson should we learn. i always think about that. the lesson i take from this one is that their incumbent parties in germany and france that have defended essentially the status quo, emmanuel macron has been a defender of the european union. olaf scholz has been a defender of the liberal order. people are not listening to that message right now. you cannot defeat these parties, these populist insurgents be being the defenders of the status quo, but you have to tapt into people s dissatisfaction e with globalization, dissatisfaction with inequality. sense that things are slipping out of control. it s not enough to say we re the responsible adults here. you have to kind of get down and have a different message for how things are going to change. g i think that s the warning sign that joe biden should hear, nots enough to run on status quo here. not enough to defend even the things we think are very t important. you have to meet people where they are, and people are frustrated.d ben rhodes, former deputy national security adviser to president obama.t ben, thank you for making the time. i feel like when we need to like widen all un-experience this whole session. okay, that s uncalled for. so let s get down to the nitty-gritty here. georgia became this kind of bench mark for principled republicans refusing to go along with improper, un-american machinations from president trump. governor brian kemp, brad raffensperger, two very conservative republicans, both nevertheless stood up to personal pressure from trump to overturn president biden s win in georgia. and of course, all that pressure trump brought to bear on georgia republicans and the ways in which those republicans resisted, that formed the basis for fulton county district attorney fani willis filing a huge rico case against trump and 18 of his codefendants in georgia. that s one story of the state of georgia after the 2020 election. republicans standing up, the record of them standing up and what they had to stand up against forming the basis for this sprawling, damning criminal indictment. the other story of georgia since that election is all the work that pro-trump republicans have done to make sure nothing like that ever happens again. to make sure nobody can ever again get in the way of trump seizing georgia s 16 electoral votes, no matter what the votes say. the most obvious thing georgia republicans have done is use every tool at their disposal to derail fani willis prosecution of trump. in the latest development in that three republican appointed judges have just put the whole case on hold while they take their time considering whether fani willis should be disqualified from the case. thus guaranteeing that the georgia prosecution will definitely not go forward against trump before the election. but that s only the start. in georgia s most populous county, fulton county, one republican elections board member last month refused to certify the primary results there. because you know, elections are scary. with the help of lawyers from a pro-trump think tank, she has now filed a lawsuit seeking the power to block the certification of elections which would of course throw november s results in georgia into chaos. which is presumably the point. meanwhile, just north of fulton county, republicans recently started agitating to take over an elections board in cherokee county. now, the board there, like other counties in georgia, has always been evenly split between democrats and republicans, but republicans in cherokee county are no longer okay with that. they wanted a full scale republican takeover, when that was blocked, they comp with an ingenious new plan. they decided they would replace one of the democratic commissioners who had been nominated with their own choice. their own choice for a democrat. a new guy that none of the local democrats have ever heard of. but don t worry, the republicans who run cherokee county swear this guy they picked is definitely a democrat. the atlanta journal constitution reported that the republican cherokee county commission chairman, quote, assured the board that the new member is a democrat, even if the local democratic party is unfamiliar with him. i assure you, he s definitely on your team. i know you have never met and i picked him, but trust me. pinky promise. meanwhile, at the state elections board in georgia, republicans there just started writing a new rule that would allow county elections boards to conduct a, quote, reasonable inquiry before they certify any election results. so instead of signing off on election results as county election boards are now required to do by law, they would be empowered instead to investigate those results as they see fit. the journal constitution notes that, quote, the proposed rule doesn t say what a reasonable inquiry would entail before certifying an election. yeah, why would you specify that? you want every election denying republican county elections board member in georgia just making it up as they go along, calling their own behavior reasonable. while the presidential election potentially hangs in the balance. speaking of that state elections board, one of its republican members was ousted last month, one of its republican members was ousted, after trump reportedly spent months calling georgia republicans insisting that that election board member had to go. because that person was not backing trump s lies about the 2020 election. and so of course, the guy had to go. trump s personal involvement in remaking the georgia state elections board is just one of the revelations in new reporting from rolling stone. their new piece is headlined georgia is our laboratory. inside trump s plan to rig 2024. it details how trump s allies are working to make sure there will not be a straightforward election result in georgia this year, given georgia s swing state status that absolutely could be a deciding factor in how the election is going to go down. what is happening there? what is happening to try to stop what is happening there? one of the reporters on that present, we have the authority to oversee or investigate the secretary of state. georgia s board of elections gathered to discuss launching an investigation into georgia secretary of state brad raffensperger who had the temerity to say no when donald trump demanded he flip the results of the 2020 election in georgia. the lone democrat on that elections board spoke out against doing this unprecedented investigation of raffensperger. as you heard, she was loudly shouted down. in a new article titled georgia is our laboratory, inside trump s plan to rig 2024, rolling stone reports this. quote, the former president and his supporters have been making concrete step by step progress in shaping electoral processes to his benefit. across the state, maga die hards are devoting considerable resources to purging voting rolls, intimidating election officials, employing legal dirty tricks, and ousting appointees who haven t been initiated into the cult of trump. it s the state where the republican party has total control over the levers of power. over the last four years trump loving elements of the georgia republican party have wielded that advantage in a crusade to turn election conspiracy theories into policies. it s an alarmingly anti-democratic experiment that trump planned and much of the republican party hope to take national. joining us now is adam ronsly, the reporter co bylined on that sprawling piece. thank you for being here. thanks for having me. so what are some of the steps that trump and his allies have taken to change the electoral process in georgia? so one of the most alarming ones that a source who has discussed this issue with trump told us, a republican attorney, is they re planning to challenge the election result regardless of the result. you know, we think of the threat to elections from trump s behavior in 2020 as only occurring in the event that trump loses. you know, at the current state of polling, trump is ahead in georgia, if you believe the polling, but what republican attorney who discussed this with trump told us is that, quote, you can t let the left get away with this cheating just because it didn t succeed, air quotes around cheating. and the plan is to challenge the result regardless of the outcome. and the intent behind that is essentially a permanent delegitimization of the election process. it s heads, i win, tails you lose. and i think you had mentioned this a little bit in your intro, is that one of the things people should be paying close attention to is that refusal to certify in the fulton county board of elections in the presidential primary. because one of the things that s very, very notable about that is that the attorneys who filed that lawsuit work for america first policies institute, which is a very trumpy organization filled with former trump folks. and what you see in those kinds of processes is the legal january 6th in miniature. essentially you re taking someone who is, you know, acting beyond their brief and trying to essentially insert themselves into the counting and, you know, assessment of vote tallies. adam, is this actually a fight in georgia? you note, i think, importantly, that georgia s a place where republicans control all of the levers of power. we just played the sound of one democratic member of the state elections board getting shouted down when she objected to what they were trying to do in terms of targeting raffensperger. is this fight joint where there is pushback against what they re doing or are they essentially running the table by changing processes to their own benefit? you know, they definitely have quite a built-in advantage. and i think that s why georgia relative to other battleground states is particularly interesting because it is more so than perhaps any other state a fight for the soul of the republican party. particularly when it comes to their faith in free and fair elections. and yeah, even folks like brian kemp, who was an absolute obstacle to trump s attempt to, you know, illegally overturn the election in georgia, brian kemp signed sb-202, a law that allows for a range of, you know, sort of procedural chicanery. joe biden called it jim crow in the 21st century. you know, even folks who have proven themselves to be obstacles to some of the more overt aspects of it sometimes will just go along to get along. and so they definitely do have an advantage. and they are running the table in certain ways, but you do see folks like you mentioned earlier, like ed lindsay, whose resignation letter we obtained in the story. people like that, you still do have these kind of principled republicans who are willing to stand up for what they believe in, but as you saw with the case of ed, you know, he sentenced to probation next month while he s on probation, he would not be allowed to associate with anyone with a criminal record. for a lot of people, that wouldn t be a big deal. for him, that s a big deal. that particular restriction eats away at his very close social circle. so maybe that was all distracting him. i don t know. he maybe had a lot i don t know. whatever the reason, he decided to venture into new territory in his campaign speech yesterday, less than five months out from the election. this is an important swing state. he decided with the land locked citizens of las vegas needed to hear about from him in order to be persuaded to vote for him was his fear of boats. heavy boats, boats with batteries near sharks. you know, nevada sharks. i know you have heard it happened. you may have seen a headline or scrolled past it on a social media feed. have you actually watched it? uncut, straight through, watched it unfold? it is very much worth watching. it s astonishing. my favorite part is the people you can see at the rally behind him who are really trying to follow along but who clearly have no earthly idea what uncle ramble standers is on about. just watch this. what would happen if the boat sank from its weight? and you re in the boat, and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater, and there s a shark that s approximately ten yards over there? by the way, a lot of shark attacks lately. did you notice that? i watched some guys justifying it today. well, they weren t really that angry. they bit off the young lady s leg because of the fact that they were they were not hungry but they misunderstood who she was. these people are crazy. he said there s no problem with sharks. they just didn t really understand a young woman swimming. really got decimated and a lot of other people. i said so there s a shark ten yards away from the boat. ten yards. or here. do i get electrocuted if the boat is sinking, water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking. do i stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted or do i jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted because he didn t know the answer. he said, nobody has s also the author of a brand new book, the situation room, the inside story of presidents in crisis. george, it s great to have you on in this book it chronically on avy, it critical six decades of crisis management from the situation room a place that you know well from your time in the white house, one of the interesting things is also these interviews with officers who were in the situation room on january 6. this is at a time now when trump is actively running to be back in the white house, and fundamentally change how the government works, how the so-called deep state works. did you hear any concerns from these duty officers about what a second trump term would mean for the kind of continuity that the national security apparatus has relied on for all these years. absolutely i mean, duty officers and others who served in the trump administration worried that the institutions would crumble. i spoke with them. wait us situation duty officer named mike stigler, who is actually on-point on january 6, and he said people have to understand how close we came to losing the vice president at the time. and he was horrified by this also horrified by the fact that he and his fellow officers in the situation room that they had to start implementing the continuity of government procedures which were designed to make sure that the government survives a nuclear attack. they were put into place on that day because of the threat to our institutions on that day as one of course, president trump famously never called down the situation room even once all during january 6. and you know, you talk about it s not just how close we came to watching our institutions crumble that day the ongoing threat is real. i mean, look at what happened just saturday night in las vegas when the president, former president uk, called the january convicted felons from january 6, those who rioted on january 6 and tried to block the peaceful transfer our he called them warriors who are somehow set up by the police. he s called them hostages. he s called them patriots. he s promising to pardon them. he s not promising to divide by the results of the next election. so this, this pass thread is very real right now have you ever seen, i mean, in your research and your time in government anyone run for office, really running against the very government that they are supposed to be? overseeing absolutely unprecedented abbe absolutely unprecedented. we have never had a former president or a presidential candidate who refuses to accept the peaceful transfer of power, who refused to say but he will buy by the constitution who s been indicted. and impeached for trying to block the peaceful transfer of power that is something that is absolutely fundamental to our democracy is one of the things that s made our democracy work for over 200 years. the idea the simple fact that the former president continues to lie about the, about the last election that he did, whatever he could on that data block, the peaceful transfer of power is absolutely unprecedented in all of our history and you, on your show on this week, you ve had some of these trump vp short listers on there some of the other hosts of this week have also had them on. i want to just play a little bit of what they ve been saying on television of late i think there were problems in 2020. yes, i do. do i think it was a problem that big technology companies working with the intelligence services sensor, the presidential campaign of donald trump? yes governors, governor you, you have said the election should wasn t stolen and you re supporting someone who says it was well, i know that we ve got certainly we ve got irregularities do you get the sense that this is one of the requirements to be on that shortlist you don t get the sense it s out there is plain as day. i actually talked to senator jd vance who is reportedly on the shortlist. as well. and every indication he gave was that he would do the same thing that mike pence, that he would not do what mike pence did in 2000 i mean, it s certainly seems to have become a requirement for those who are running to accept president trump s lie. former president trump s lie about the last election to suggest that he did nothing wrong. now on january 6, to say that somehow that is not an important issue at this point. and to suggest that it was actually vice president pence who did the wrong thing in 2020 i mean, this is just again, this is astonishing. we ve never really had a former prison isn t it run before? whose own vice president refuses to endorse him because of the actions he took on those days. yeah. yeah. i mean, that alone has says maybe it says it all as a journalist, when you have these potential vp, a candidates on the show, you ve had them on, we ve had them on the show here. they rarely, if ever for concede ground this seems to be also another litmus test for how to be in maga world. i mean, is this the new reality for this this maga era of politicians that they don t back down when they re confronted with fats perhaps it is, but i think that s, that poses a test for all of us in journalism as well. i ve made it a point if they will not accept those facts, i don t go on to other issues. i m not going to go to participate in some kind of a sham where you somehow equate the legitimacy of an election or the peaceful transfer of power with a debate over tax cuts or environmental regulation. if you can t pass that fundamental threshold of saying yes, the last election was not stolen two, i will abide by the results of the next election then i think that s all voters and viewers need to know. i don t think if you re willing to lie about something as big as that, why should anything else they want to talk about be given any credence it s such an important point. i mean, we ve got a vice presidential debate coming up right here on cnn. i later this month as a journal phyllis does american what do you think is the most important question that needs to be answered from both candidates who won the last election yeah, very simple. yeah. and won the last election. let s just let s let s discuss and debate. and we ll see, i mean, luck, week. it s been asked by donald trump. he refuses to answer it correctly, but we ll see what he does when he s given that opportunity in front of 140 million people it says it s a little bit different than on a stage like that. yeah, i when it s an actual debate, but that s it s a real test. i do want to play a little bit of what the vice president kamala harris has been saying, actually, on this very point, i mean, she seems to really be taking this issue on head-on. donald. trump openly tried to overturn the last election and now he openly attacks the foundations of our justice system. cheaters don t like getting caught it s a different tone than we ve seen from harb, but it also speaks to that question that you just raised if trump doesn t pass the truth test on that issue, is there room for the biden administration to even move on to some of the other stuff, maybe the bread and butter issues, maybe the economy do you think that they are? settling on this idea of a character test for donald trump on this issue. president president kennedy, i have to do it all, but i mean, i think that is the threshold question of this election. certainly the biden campaign is going to have to address voters concerns about the economy, voters concerns that inflation, those are important as well, but it it is fundamental, as i said, at the start part the very question of whether or not you accept election results, whether you accept the peaceful transfer of power, that is an absolutely fundamental issue that people should be confirmed runaway as they go to make their choice in november when it comes to the potential of a trump administration. i mean, what do you think his conduct on january 6 tells you about what he might do next? not just around the election, but just in general he s saying what he would do next. he says that every single day he says he would pardon what he calls the january 6 hostages. he s talked about retribution using his justice department as an as an arm of retribution. he s talked openly about dropping the prosecutions against themselves. that s an active obstruction of justice in and of convicted former president did, as other helens, do he met with a probation officer prior to sentencing, but that s where the similarities stop. at the differences get real. trump got to have his lawyer, todd blanche in the room, a special accommodation not afforded then to the average defendant and it s one of the few notable examples of how the legal system really bent over backwards for trump, where it would not have for others, ten contempt violations normally merit more than just a fine. nobel restrictions for a defendant of his means. also, an anomaly carefully choreographed search of his home to spare them from having cameras capture agents of the lawn of the law wearing fbi jackets. that s a nicety really given to no one else joining me now are robert gray who was counseled to then president trump during is first impeachment. and dante mills, he s a civil and criminal attorney and a law professor at temple this leaves school of law, dante, this probation hearing lasted about 30 minutes. we re told what kind of information are they trying to get from trump. let s just walk through. everybody understands the purpose of this and why they do it most times, judges don t know the defendant these trials happen. normally their day or two. the judge doesn t get to know the person they re going to have to sentence. so what you do is you have an investigating officer come in, ask questions about the person s background, get an understanding of who they are, where they come from, who their family is, what kind to jobs they have. and then they present a report to the judge who says, based on this report it s going to influence my decision one way or the other, or it won t because it s pretty standard so it happens to everybody, but we do it to a former president of the united states. everybody knows who he is already. so it s not necessary. i don t think in this case, but you have to go through the process of why why have his lawyer present? i mean what s the concern there are the on trump s part. i don t know so about new york state practice, but i will say in federal practice is actually typical to have a lawyer present during the pre-sentence interview. in fact, it s almost always ordered by the judge upon request of the defense. them from saying anything that might hurt them. right. particular well, not so much that but particularly in a case that goes to trial where the defendant has an appeal. i think the concern always is to not talk about the quote, unquote, instant offense, meaning the offense of conviction because you might say something there that potentially could jeopardize. and i think everything else. and so that s why the lawyer often the lawyer is there to just simply she and i ve done hundreds of these essentially two let me handle the discussions as your lawyer with the probation officer about the offensive fine line between wanting your client to be forthcoming and not be obstructive against the person trying to get information, but also not crossing the line is saying, but i did this or slipping up is saying something that can be used against them, being obstructive to the person trying to get information is definitely something i would be worried about with trump. i mean, just in general that judge merchan is going to weigh who is donald trump, which everybody knows to a certain degree, but also the lack of remorse here, frankly, in this case, i mean, ultimately, how does that all come together to influence the judge s decision and sentence? i think the judge knows what he s going to do, but he ll get this regard. i think he s already made up his mind, but he ll get this report and he ll see what s in this report and he may use that to justify something if he wants to put trump in jail, he ll say well, trump wasn t forthcoming. look at this report. he didn t even provide this information if he wants to give them probation, he ll say, well trump was he was cooperating with this investigator. so this is a sign that he s learned his lesson and we don t need to put them in jail. i think this will be used to bolster whatever sayyed the judge wants to lean on. you think the judge is already setup, set his mind to some decision here you know, i honestly don t. i think that obviously all judges have views about a case, particularly when they ve sat through a trial about what they might do in the event of a conviction at sentencing. but i do think the judges take very seriously, both in guilty plea cases as well as cases that go to trial and result in a conviction in evaluating a third parties let s review which is the probation office of the defendant s personal characteristics and history and the investigation that they conduct. they re very good at it. i have found judges don t always agree. they don t have to agree with what they re probation office recommends, but i imagine the probation office will recommend whether or not in this e felony case a sentence of imprisonment is warranted or not. generally, i would say that in this particular case, i don t know if we re going to find any or learn anything new about the former president trump that we don t. and the judge doesn t know are ready, so i do want to move on just briefly to what s happening down in florida with judge aileen cannon i mean, she s got a lot of emotions to deal with. she dealt with one issue today hey well, one-and-a-half let s call it that one of them was whether or not to throw out some of the counts against donald trump sheet ruled against that, but she did say that this so-called talking indictment in which the prosecutors laid out this description of trump s handling of classified map and how he talked to somebody and his camp payne about it. she basically said that was unnecessary and she struck it from the indictment what do you make of that? it is something that judges, federal judges increasingly, i have seen as a defense lawyer have problems with i mean, they they don t try to trim the sales of the government too often about speaking indictments but they do expect that speaking indictments, if they speak speak to facts that the government expects with some degree of certainty will be offered into evidence and received into evidence at trial. and this was a situation where i think the sense was that was excised from the indictment was problematic. the judge hasn t ruled on it yet. it may or may not. this is other similar acts evidence but not conduct that s actually he wasn t part of the charge charge and that s shouldn t really be in the diet payment ordinarily unless you re pretty certain that the judge has made a ruling. but to trump s handling of classified documents, which is the gate does but i ll tell you why this was put in there. the prosecutors who bought this case knew they were bringing a case against the former president of the united states, and they will be scrutinized all right, people are going to go through with a fine tooth comb and i believe they want it to include things that would pass the smell test for anybody reading this indictment, they threw extra facts and air. so if you just read the indictment on its face, you said, oh, they have a case. oh, they have a reason for bringing this forward. so i do think they went overboard a little bit. i understand why they did it i also don t blame the judge for saying all right. just take this part, striking it does that have any impact on the case at all? the indictment is welcome to things. one is the jury will be specifically instructed at the beginning of the trial during trial and at the end of the trial that the indictment itself is just a charge and it s not evidence of anything. but it is fairly often the case paste that judges will allow the indictment into the jury room. not all judges will do that but in federal cases, some judges will. and so you don t want anything in the indictment that the jury really shouldn t be in a judge is going to take a look. important thing is the jury instructions. the judge is going to tell them what the law is, what they have to base their decision on. think that will be more important than the indictment itself but she was right for cleaning up that indictment and just not having facts that may or may not come in. that case is a slow moving train. mean alaa man, that s a perfect example of the image that he portrayed himself. and yet in this arizona case, he was literally running from the law he literally tried to escape being served i mean, that s the rudy giuliani of today would be completely unrecognizable of the giuliani of 20 years ago are 30. there s, there s no question about it. i mean, his fall it s not that he s had a toe just a that abortion should all be illegal? this group believes or does he believe what he says? he believed the president has been quite clear that he does not want you have a federal ban, i think has been very clear on the fact that he wants you have the issue remain with the states and so either we can take him at his word or you don t. it s quite clear that people want you tie him and tebor him to the organization. and all of their beliefs. it is quite clear that we are in the business of coalition building here in american politics. if you have an issue with the coalition, you can bring that up on the campaign trail, but it is interesting to me that we never asked democrats you disavow any of their supporters. we never asked democrats to affectively find the most extreme elements of their party and then answer questions about them. this only happens with people on the political right. and so i think that, that look, i think i don t think that s true. i think that s what comes up all the time. democrats are always asked, they are i say disavow, i didn t blanche. there s a difference between asking whether you agree with the issues and then saying, what do you have to disavow the group? i think again, the broader issue here is is the democratic party, a party that is hospitable to the beliefs of christians. i think there s plenty of polling that shows that there has been an erosion of faith in america. but there is a greater arose in the democratic party. and many of the policies that they re advocating for them up to democrats. this is a place where you guys are completely off base because the democratic party is fueled by african americans, particularly african american women who are the backbone of large christian churches all over america and so if we take a look at where the democratic party stands and the teachings at some i m a child of a minister. and as the teachings of jesus feeding the hungry clothing, the naked, taking care of those who are, who are needed and dispossessed that is quite right in the middle of the home plate of the democratic party platform. so i think that make the argument is an argument that is being made on behalf of a various particular subset of christianity that in historical terms, has not been on the side of african-americans at all because that part of the christianity has been on the side in the old days, slavery segregation i mean, he remembers very different. we want to have an ala carte conversation about religion short democrats like you pick and choose when they want to go down to the black church, like kathy hochul and get their anointing and say that i am not here to be the mother of all 62 counties that she s going to be a were all her apostles. there is a real serious conversation. democratic party, where if barack obama goes to boston it says that we have some people worshiping god and the blue states and awesome gotten the blue states. but when eric adams goes and says that i believe that god s plan for my life has led me to becoming mayor. he gets mocked. he gets mocked by the media. he gets mapped over there when we have all of those arrays. also, i just i don t want to lose this in the conversation. it s important though it is donald trump describing, first of all, your religion, i thought that he described himself as christian, but then to say that it is against your religion, christianity to vote for democrats, that seems like crossing a line. but i also think, what just happened here too is you re saying you guys down trump is saying all democrats, your blanket statements. that s what s frustrating i think to there can people as these blanket statements assuming that all democrats think like that all republicans think like, and that s an accurate. and so donald trump did here is interesting because he s pandering to christian conservatives, but yet his lifestyle, we know violet plates most, if not all, the commandments that he, you know, that the christians abide by but that s all trump. that doesn t speak for all republicans, not all republicans believed to ban abortion. and not all republicans want to attack women. just like i don t think all democrats are pro palestine and not all pro-hamas. i don t blanket statement that because i think that s a frustration in politics. political perspective. i mean, you talked about the big tent. i i think that s that s one way of looking at it. but from a political perspective, donald trump trying to argue he understands abortions of political problem for republicans. he s trying to argue, he s not the extremist president. he s not going to have a national ban, but then to go before an organization that is even to the right of the right on this issue, it does that really undercut his message giving democrats an opportunity? it does get their request an opportunity, not just because he s talking to this group i mean, he he made i think he s being extreme, but all the extremists think that he s extreme enough for them, right? he is the president who took credit for pregnant three supreme court justice on the court, who got rid of row, who helped the end roe v wade protections for abortion. he wants credit from groups like this about getting rid of abortion in the country. and if he s going to take credit, that means he also has take the blame from 60 5% of the country who has decided that we are four abortion rights. they are for women having the freedom to exercise control over their own bodies. and if he s going to take the credit, he also has to take well, i would agree that there are individuals who will be offended by the choice of the venue. and so if democrats want to raise that as an issue that is fair game in politics, but that does not deal with the fact that again, we re not having this conversation to your point when we re talking about people on the brooklyn bridge yelling from the river to the sea. palestine will be free, which is a call for the eradication of us people. we don t have these same, i think would disagree with you i don t wanna i don t want to belabor that point, but definitely i don t i do not think that is an issue that the democratic party has to own, right? it s becomes those are those democrats that is not indicative of who we are as a party. i think it is disingenuous to sit here and pretend that we don t have a senate majority leader for this nation that has gone and undermined benjamin netanyahu. it is disingenuous to say that we don t have a president than on one day said you re going to support israel on the other, de said is going to get rid of funny, i click, i get this is a completely separate issue, but my point is that if we re going to have people own a particular faction of their base and which do what across the board. and we re here having this conversation about abortion because it is clearly an issue the democrats think they can run on. and the only issues they can run on its abortion on monday, abortion on tuesday, january 6, on wednesday, and nothing else. abortion on monday and abortion on tuesday worked pretty well for them particularly in 2022. so more, how do you see this? republicans are going to struggle as we have on this issue of women s rights. when we talk about abortion, we fail to talk about the resources that aren t available to women who are now in these states that are being told they can t do ivf, which i m sorry if you want women to have more children, ivf is a wonderful opportunity to do that. so you re banning things like that. and you re not giving them the resources, then to have children to support women going to those appointments. having children is expensive. childcare is expensive. we don t do anything about that conversation. we stop and i think that two things can be true at once. you can believe in the sanctity of life, but you can also believe in medical freedom for half the population of the places in this country where resentment for a variety of reasons. people, according to whatever narrative they want, want to attribute everything to one thing, whatever it is. but as we discussed last week with carrie champion, it s a combination of things, but say anything you want about caitlin clark. she in addition, they should understand this high tide of caitlin clark is raising all boats as you just pointed out, in addition to that, she has done everything the right way. she said i don t know what an apology from kennedy carter is just the way the game is. and then she praised carter s play. she says the game is rough. i ve got to adapt to that. she signs every but a graph. she doesn t whine and complain. she didn t complain about being left off the olympic team. some of this, and it s just not just a white, white thing, but maybe she is in terms of attention now that but many white stars in the league over the last quarter century, maybe there s some similarity between her and larry bird when larry bird came into the nba, there was some skepticism all he was fine in college is a white guy, can t be that good. it turned out he was one of the all-time greatest players, one of the ten greatest players conservatively in the whole history of the league when dennis rodman, who s always been a little crazy, said, if larry bird was a black guy, just be an average player, everyone was up in arms, right? here s what larry said. i don t care. let s just play he defused the whole thing. he warned everybody over by just being about basketball and caitlin clark, i think has been not just a really good and exciting player. she s been a classy person to this point and good for her. yeah. actually, let s play what caitlin said about being left off the team honestly, notice appointment like i think it just gives you something something to work for. you know, that s a dream, you know, hopefully one day i can be there and think it s just a little more motivation you remember that and, you know, hopefully in four years when four years comes back around, i can be there and honestly likely she will. i mean, just so people understand bob me what you were just talking about. this is what the olympic team looks like in terms of their accolades. i mean, you ve got wnba champions, you ve got all stars because you ve got olympic gold medalists, you ve got people who have basically been at the highest levels playing at slav a for a long time already. seems that she understands that she understands that. and what coaches and players around the wnba have to understand. i think most of them likely do yeah, i understand the resentment they d been there a long time. there are many good players. she s getting a disproportionate amount of the attention, but none of that is her fault. some of the resentment toward her has a racial element in it. we d be naive to deny that, but some people want to make that the entire narrative as we discussed last week with carrie champion, some of this is is carrier said as stacy dales of espn, who played in league happens to be white, she has said, hey, we ve been around a long time notice, not just our excellence, but it s a physical game. now, we have to make distinctions. what kennedy carter did against caitlin clark is outside the bounds. it should have been a flagrant foul i ll they upgraded it to that last week. i made the point that when alyssa thomas through angel reese to the floor, that was involved two black players had it been caitlin clark and alyssa thomas and thrown her to the floor? everyone would have made that a racial incident and only a racial incident i did a bad job, however, on context because that was immediately called a flagrant two. and alyssa thomas was ejected, plus it was on a small cable outlet and not viewed as widely as kate, right like kennedy carter, caitlin clark thing was out of bounds and it s pretty clear that for whatever reasons kennedy carter harbored some resentment toward caitlin clark, whatever the cause. i mean, one of the things is that all these kind of new fans right to the gay are coming in and everybody wants to be a sports analyst of the wnba and they ve just now started watching and they re not even watching all the games, apparently. right. and when people say in a simple-minded way, oh, she s a white star. there have been many, many white stars over the years past and present. there s breanna stewart now, there was rebecca lobo sue bird, sabrina ionesco, who almost batch steph curry in a three-point shooting contest this past february at the starting name, what is it about caitlin clark? it s not just that she s white. steph curry stood out from other great black stars in the nba because he played in a way that was appealing and relatable. shooting from the with linda kincaid we begin this hour in china where for us college instructors have been stabbed at a public park in a rare case of violent crime against foreigners. the victims were attacked in the city of gene lean in china s northeast they worked at cornell college, a small private liberal arts institution in mount vernon, iowa. footage third appears to show the aftermath of that stabbing appeared on china s chinese social media, but it was quickly censored little is known about the instructors conditions. there s still no word on a motive. want to bring in cnn s kristie lu stout in hong kong following the story, good to have you with us, christie so this has been described as a brutal stabbing of the body iowa representative for the district where this university is do you know if these four is still in hospital? what else can you tell us about their injuries and whether they were targeted yet linda, one of the victims is said to be doing well. this is a very chilling stabbing incident especially keeping in mind that violent crimes against foreigners are a rare in china. and this is the latest, what we know. so it evolves for educators from iowa s cornell college, there were wounded in this stabbing incident when they were visiting a park in jilin city that s located the northeast of china. and we do have video of the aftermath. let s bring it up once again for you in the social media video, i want you to look at the three wounded people lying on the ground. this is in invasion park and julian city. they are covered in blood. they are waiting for first responders one of them is pressing his hand on the back of his waist. all three in the video are awake. they re conscious and they re using their smartphones or tried to reach out to others. the brother one of the wounded americans, davide zab dubna, says that his brother is doing well, but the condition of the other three at this hour is unknown. and there are no reports yet of a motive. now, the president of cornell college, so that the foreign china, it s part of a partnership with the local university called beizhan university in his statement to cnn this is what he said jonathan brand told cnn, quote, we have been in contact with all four instructors and are assisting them during this time. brand says that they were with a beige and faculty member when this stabbing took place. this took place monday morning run 11, a.m. local time. no students were involved in this program. the us state department meanwhile says, it is aware of reports of a stabbing and it is monitoring the situation. the stabbing in jilin city has been trending high on chinese social media today with posts occasionally censored and some that is, they called it a terrible incident. let s bring up some example responses for you with some saying this the current state of public security pretty is not supposed to let such a thing happened. another said, it will definitely further hinder foreigners from visiting china of china has low rates of violent crime. again, violent crimes against foreigners, very rare, but the stabbing comes at a sensitive time for us. china relations, these two countries they re trying to strengthen relations, are trying to strengthen people-to-people exchanges at a time of deep tension, as we reported earlier here on cnn, chinese leader xi jinping plans to invite some 50,000 young americans to china in the next five years. and although no american students were targeted in this stabbing incident, beizhan park this incident has a chilling effect. it could discourage some young americans from going to china. linda high as the christie has the us state department responded, what more can you tell us about those partnerships between colleges in china and the us what the us state department says, it is currently monitoring the situation. there are number of programs for, um, by us universities in china, for example, nyu and shanghai. but as you can imagine, a number of these universities and american students are watching closely to see if there is an upgrade or update to the us let s travel advisory currently, the us travel advisory for trying to stands at level three, reconsider travel. the us state department has cited the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bands, including the risk a wrongful, the tensions. but again, the us state department, along with the us embassy in beijing, they are currently monitoring the situation and jilin city will bring any additional update to you right here on cnn back to you. all right. thanks to your crystalline stout joining us from hong kong well, now, turning to two major stories from the us justice system, donald trump, the first former us president to be interviewed by probation officers in new york. ahead of his sentencing for his 34 felony convictions. and hunter biden are waiting a verdict in delaware in his trial on federal gun charges jurors is set to resume their deliberations later today but let s go first to new york, where donald trump spent less than 30 minutes meeting virtually with probation officers. there reported judge juan merchan will help decide the sentence he s 34 felony convictions scene ends. brynn gingras has the details the former president finishing his meeting with a probation officer were told from a source that lasted about 30 minutes and his camp calling it uneventful. now it s not clear exactly what sort of questions were asked in this meeting, but what is customary is the fact that this always happens after a defendant has either pleaded guilty or is convicted of the crimes that they re charged with. we know some of the questions that are asked are about the criminal history of that person. the family background. there finally natural background. did they ever abuse alcohol or drugs, things like this? what s also not customary and this situation of course, the fact that there is a former president as the person who is being interviewed by the probation office, but also going to happen virtually. we know that the former president was at mar-a-lago. he was there with his attorney. that was allowed by if a judge in this case. now, what s going to happen next is that trump s defense team is going to submit their own sentencing recommendation and both that along with this report made by the probation officer, will be factored into judge juan merchan s decision about what sentence trump should face for being convicted on those 34 counts just a few weeks ago. so we re waiting, of course, for that to happen. that sentencing date still set for july 11, brynn gingras, cnn, new york well the. jury in hunter biden s federal gun trial will continue deliberations in the coming hours after they heard closing arguments in the case monday, the courtroom was packed with supporters of the president s son. he decided not to testify in his own defense. cnn s paula reid has the highlights from day six of the trial in a major show of support, hunter s family members and pastor taking up three rows in court today known the parameters you don t abandon your friends and family tough time in cold using arguments, prosecutors pointed to the gallery of supporters and said, those people are not evidence and reminded the jury that, quote, no one is above the law, the prosecution of money before it s even over a new report suggests female could face a budget shortfall of more than $1.3 billion by august after an extraordinary and costly number of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the first half of this year. cnn meteorologist allison chinchar has more in the month of may, there were officially four billion-dollar disasters according to a new report from noaa, although that number could end up going up thanks to some severe events that took place towards the end of the month, that additional four brings our total so far this year up to $11 disaster comparing that to the previous year, we ended up with 28 total for the entire 12 month timeline, but we are currently on pace to make it very close, if not possibly being higher than that number from last year, one of the biggest drivers of these disasters was a lot of the severe weather that took place not only me, but also so in april, in fact, a stretch of april through may, we ended up with 801 tornado reports. that is the second most since 1950. when you look at tornadoes, specifically the report s just since january 1st, we ve had over 1,100 yes. this is a busy time of year, but even with that said the average would only be right around the 800 marks. so it s definitely a busier year than normal. in fact, even compared to a lot of the other years so far, we are just behind 2011 coming in second place. now, one thing to note is that may traditionally is when you end up seeing the most of those tornadoes followed by june in april respectively. so this time of year is when we normally would see it. it s just a little bit higher than usual. the big concern is going forward over the next few months because there is a concern whether or not female will run out of money for these natural disasters because hurricane season specifically is now upon us and it s expected to be an incredibly the busy one looking at the numbers, the official forecasts, renewal, calling for 17 to 25 named storms. the average is only 148 to 13 of those are expected to be hurricanes in an average year, you would only have seven. another concern in the coming months is heat, thanks to climate change, it s been a big driver and a lot of these increased heatwaves and for some of these areas were already starting to see a very early start to that heat. take, for example, phoenix and also las okay. we have the jurors reconvening this morning. as you pointed out, they they had about an hour of deliberations before the and at the de and the judge said they would just come straight back into the jury deliberation deliberation room and reconvene this morning and go through these three charges they they have a form that tells them the standards, the different elements that they have to unanimously agree on in order to reach a verdict. and those include of course the idea that 100 knowingly violated the law when he bought a firearm in october of 2018, that he knew he was addicted to drugs when he filled out that form and according to process to curators, when he lied in, be in order to be able to get through a background check those are the elements that are at the center of this. we saw the jurors yesterday after about an hour. they seem to have started forming a bond at a couple of them, walked out arm in arm as they exited, smiling. these are jurors who have been very, very attentive. they ve been taking notes during this trial over five days over really not a lot in dispute in this case. in the end, they re going to have to reach a verdict on someone who is very well known in this community. you saw the biden family come out in force for them yesterday, 33 rows of seats it s were taken up by members of the community, including an african american church that is doing a prayer service for him every morning, kate talk to me about some of the high points they came out during closing arguments and some of the final things really that the jury heard before they started deliberating yeah. look, it was a very, very tough battle really between this that the lawyers involved here, we had abbe lowell who is 100 attorney, who used a a series of presentations to list what he says. we re holes in the case on the part of the prosecution. he said these were all reasons for reasonable doubt. he also accused prosecutors of rehearsing with witnesses and he accused prosecutors also have been to nail bit noisy. naomi biden, who is a hunter biden s daughter, who testified here, one of the last witnesses and asking her whether she did rugs, something that really caused a lot of emotion from her and from her father that day. on the part of the prosecution, they said, look, hunter biden new, he was addicted to drugs. anyone who puts a crackpipe to their mouth every 15 minutes knows he s an advocate evan perez thank, you so much, kevin, as always, johnson, would this now cnn legal analyst, jennifer rodgers, counselor, we heard from evan there that the prosecution in their closing arguments may direct reference to people in the gallery which included at some points that first lady hunter biden s why biden family members in did so some people who are watching said pretty aggressively, what s your takeaway there? yeah, i was surprised at that. actually, i m not surprised that they address that he had so many supporters there, but i would have done it differently because the risk to the prosecution is that people really sympathize with hundred for biden. there s a narrow pathway for them to find him not guilty, but i think it does require them to really have sympathy for him to get there. and so i would have done it by saying you see, he has a lot of support. we all know addiction is a terrible thing. you might find yourself sympathizing with him, but your job as jurors is to follow the law you have taken an oath that requires you to put aside your sympathy and to look at the facts here. that s what i would have done instead of kinda point, they are not evidence. ignore them. i think that s handling it the wrong way because if they aren t, we don t know for sure, but if they are sympathetic to the biden family you re sort of guilty the jurors are your sort of yelling at them about that? yeah. it s not the right take. i mean, listen in order to acquit or even to hang at least some of them have to find this whole thing about did he knowingly make the false statement? and when you look at all the evidence around his use, not in those two weeks necessarily, but around that time. that s hard to do. so i do feel like the judges have the jury had to do a little bit of nullifying here in order to find him not guilty and guilting them into the sympathy is not the way to avoid that. the judge and the jury instructions seem to make pretty clear that the prosecution version of the law is the one to follow here, which is to say, we don t have to prove that hunter biden knew he was addicted the minute the pen hit the paper right there at that moment or that he was using drugs the minute the pen hit the paper at that moment that s right. and prosecutors always emphasized to use your common sense, right? someone comes out of rehab. they described themselves for years later is an addict. he knows he s an addict. use your common sense but you should find jurors walking hand in hand, eyelid courtroom. that s a little unusual. yeah, i haven t seen that before. they often do get close. they spend a lot of time together sometimes they are at odds, sometimes they re not. it s not uncommon for them to form friendships in the arm in arm, i really haven t heard before. maybe this is a particularly close group, but listen, they need to be closer at least in agreement in order to reach a unanimous verdict. so i suppose that s a good sign for prosecutors know i know people who write lifetime movies. i mean, this could be a good plot. his strange plot for the beginning of something kinda lifetime romance there. the jury is in delaware, which is a very democratic state in wilmington, which is a very biden city that binds have been there for decades it s in decades and decades yeah. how much will that play in the jury room? are they looking after one guy who may be for now safe, very i don t know ten storeys underground somewhere in gaza while the people that he purported it s represent continue to suffer and across fire of his own making or will he do what s necessary to actually move this to a better place? to help him, the suffering of people to help bring real security to israelis and palestinians alike that one guy that secretary blinken is referring to is hamas military leader yahya sinwar. and there is new reporting and the wall street journal about messages purportedly from sinwar to ceasefire negotiators. one message reading, we have the israelis, right where we want them joining us right now is retired lieutenant colonel jonathan cohen, rica. he was the spokesperson for the idf before and after the october 7 attack. can we say how him on many a time he s now a senior fellow with the foundation of defense of democracies. colonel, thank you so much for being here. i want to get to that reporting from the wall street journal with some additional contexts in just a second, but first on what we hear from secretary blinken meeting with netanyahu and he also not only said there was consensus, he said that netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment and support of this hostage and ceasefire deal, as it s laid out so far, do you think they are closer than ever before to an actual deal we ve seen steps forward and then how do you read this? i sadly don t. and i m not as positive towards the whole development. i would love to see our hostages home are 120 hostages home? and i would want to see israel defeat hamas and return safety to southern israel and improve the situation in gaza but i think that if you re sinwar is in his text messages, he he hits the nail on the head. sadly. and for months hamas has been manipulating global public opinion using international politics. the differences between washington and jerusalem, and they have basically been able to stay alive and stay out of jail using the hostages for about 345 months and that s something that i think is the core of hamas strategy to delay and delay as much as possible using the hostages and kind of try to derail israeli operations in gaza so that the war will end without israel defeating hamas. that s the zero-sum game. and i think that s sinwar doesn t really have a strong incentive they ve to go ahead and release hostages and basically end the war because that is his best tool to stay alive and to keep hamas empowering gaza. let me ask you about that. so the wall street journal reporting, cnn is not seeing the wall street journal message. the message is that the wall street journal s reporting cannot confirm the authenticity of them. still, i want to read some more of the reporting from the journal. we have the israelis right where we want them. we read. it was one message and these are messages to the negotiators of the sea, to the ceasefire negotiators is what and this is another one in one message two, hamas leaders in doha, sin more cited civilian losses and national liberation conflict thaksin places such as algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from france saying quote, these are necessary sacrifices here s the thing. if this is the case, if this is the zero sum game that you re talking about, if this is the strategy how does israel take on hamas take out hamas deal with sinwar without playing into his hands that s a good question, and i think that the israeli strategy has been so far to try to get to sinwar, get to the senior leadership of hamas so far not succeeding probably because he is hidden underground with lots of israeli hostages surrounding him as human shields and so far what israel said he hasn t been able to do is to advance fast enough and to get to sinwar and basically decide the battle it took israel many months of staging in order to finally get into rafah. there was tremendous outcry and there were protests that israel shouldn t and mustn t go into rafah. israel easing enough. and there s no humanitarian catastrophe and there s no mass casualty event which proves that is can and should do what it s doing. here is a humanitarian crisis throughout gaza now you ve definitely yes, but i m talking there s not a slaughter and not a catastrophe like people warned that there will you think some have thought hoped maybe conjectured that the rescue operation from the weekend could have changed the calculus. they re getting three men out, men that were not supposed to be in the first batch of any ceasefire negotiation can getting those hostages. do you think do you think that changes the calculations are discussing for hamas? do you think that could scare them to the table it s a very happy event, but eventually it only proves that i think it strengthens the case of getting hostages out via negotiations because i don t think that is what has the intelligence capacity or the otherwise military capacity to get more hostages out like this, because this was a top of the shelf special operations with weeks of preparation, intel tip of the spear israeli commando units i ve got in gaza job done, got the hostages out and i don t think that will sadly have the ability to do so over and over again. and i don t think that it changes the calculation and i think that iran hizballah or a much bigger threat, you know, we re focused on gaza and small details in gaza. the big deal and the big threat to regional stability is hizballah against this. well, and if you look at where alarms or sounding most in israel, it s in northern israel and its rockets and drones, et cetera. and sadly, when you re talking about where israel situated, all it s all big crisis. it s all big alarms that are sound from hamas in gaza to the neighbors around with funded and funded and supplied and supported by iran on in terms of the motivation and position of prime minister benjamin netanyahu, blinken says that he reaffirmed his support for today, but president biden told time magazine in a very recent interview, and here s how he put it. there is every reason for people to draw the conclusion that netanyahu is prolonging the war for his own political gain what s your reaction to them? as an israeli, as a father two children who will soon be serving in the military. i really, really hope that isn t true. and i would like to see evidence that states the otherwise from my elected leadership. i think it s very important and what we lacked now in israel is unity and trust. we are as you rightly said, surrounded by so many enemies that are challenging or very existence. and what s the israeli public now is going through. this battle fatigue, eight months of fighting, relentless alarms and sirens and 100,000 people are evacuated from their homes. in northern israel. and the war goes on. we had four casualties reported just this morning. lots of pressure on israeli society and what s desperately needed is unity is leadership. and to take, carry israel forward in what i think will be the coming years, not months, the coming years will be very challenging you don t think president biden was so off off-base to say that? this is going to resonate with the biden campaign believes that tackling gun violence is an issue of importance to young voters, but also to voters in black and latino communities. and so part part of president biden s goal today is trying to promote was his administration has done to try to tackle gun violence, including touting the bipartisan gun safety bill that he signed into law just two years ago. biden, today s specifically will announce the justice department has charged more than 500 defendants with violating gun trafficking and illegal straw purchaser so it seemed provisions that were part of that gun safety legislation. he will be speaking to survivors of gun violence as well as volunteers and activists at everytown for gun safety is conference it s here in washington, dc. this is one of those groups that s really risen in prominence in the wake of mass shootings in this country. the president also is expected to tout the drop hop in violent crime. the fbi yesterday released some preliminary data that showed that violent crime in the first three months of the year is actually down 15%. if you take a look at the number of murders in the country those three months, that s down by 26%. president biden has praised this, saying it s good news for american families and also arguing that this isn t happening by accident, promoted voting a his own legislative and executive actions relating to this. he said, quote, my administration is putting more cops on the beat, holding violent criminals accountable, and getting illegal guns off the street. and we are doing it in partnership with communities. he added as a result, americans are safer today than when i took office. so part of what the biden can campaign, the white house are hoping the president can do today is really tried to lay out the steps that he has taken to try to address issues relating to crime and also gun violence. it tom s as he s not just looking to rally his own base on this, but you also have former president donald trump, who has sought to rally republicans around a gun initiatives. he has vowed to undo many of the efforts that biden has put into place while he is an office, while the biden campaign argues that trump would simply be beholden to the gun lobbies so both men, in their own ways really trying to use gun issues as a way to rally their basis heading into november s election. or let thank you. john so this morning, what makes donald trump nervous or who the answer might be? taylor swift? so asked about taylor swift for an upcoming book, trump says, quote, i think she s very beautiful, actually, unusually beautiful. that s according to a forthcoming book from variety coder and chief from institute with us now cnn political commentator, democratic strategist, public gala, and cnn political commentator and republican strategist. sure michael singleton and paul, there are people who look at that comment and note it s a little strange from a guy who is going to turn 78 later in the week that maybe those are the types of things that he shouldn t be observing right there. but another way of looking at it is for a guy who will say mean things about anybody. he seems to be really careful when it comes to taylor swift right? what both are true. it s an incredibly creepy, i m sorry, i know it s morning. i just threw up a little bit. my mouth. when you read those quotes today, it s just disgusting thing and mr. corruption mr. trump should pay himself hush money. you should just shut up about taylor swift and you can tell he is scared of her trump understand celebrity. he understands the power celebrity that s how he got where he is. ms swift is far more powerful as a celebrity than donald trump ever dreamed. a big and so he s clearly scared of her. and i find that wonderful and amusing, even though the comments about her appearance deeply creepy. sure. michael, i was trying to think if there was another figure who people have politicians have had to walk on eggshells around. you have to be really careful with no matter what you say or how they feel about you. and i was sick. maybe oprah when oprah went behind barak obama in 2007, 2008, everyone, hillary clinton s campaign and had to be really careful than john mccain s campaign had to be really careful. i can t really think of everyone else, anyone else that would make a politician so nervous. i mean, john, i can think of one other person and i think that would be bianna. and i have to say this because my girlfriend were kill me if i did not. one other the person that i think a lot of politicians out to be very, very careful with the lead. i think a lot of these celebrities and younger voters, attractiveness to them not only because of their music, but their lifestyles and also the way they live vicariously by the politics that they adopt is certainly a pervasive thing. if you re a politician right now, trying to win the left section, which we know will be very close and you want to galvanize young people you certainly don t want to anger them by attacking some of the individuals they look up to and i think this is the case. we re taylor swift who is an incredible songwriter. so here s someone who galvanized is not only young liberals, john, but she also galvanizes young conservatives be in a former country star who s now i want to pop music. so there s an interesting dichotomy here. but i think the former president is trying to thread the needle on. i know the biden campaign would love it to taylor swift came out in public and endorse the biden candidacy like she did in 2020. they are waiting for that to happen. i was looking at the calendar, paul, i still can t wrap my arms around the fact that there is a general election presidential debate in like two weeks and yes, it is right here on cnn. and i m not doing this to promote the debate which is, i should note right here on cnn but it just shatters everything i know about presidential campaigns in its drawings. i covered george bush in 2000 and he disappeared for days before the first debate for debate prep in it, we learn later that he d been preparing like a ton for months before should these candidates deep into debate prep for what could be the most important presidential debate any of us have ever seen oh yeah, debates do tend to freeze the campaign and our president has to go to europe for g7 meeting and if i were campaign strategies for him, i would be tearing the last three hairs out of my head. but you can use that time on air force one. so let s watch them manifest on air force one. if my old pal ron klain, president s former chief of staff is on that trip. i mean, they re doing to bake prep on the plane. no one i ve done all my adult life. no one is better at debate prep than the president s former chief of staff, ron klain. but they do need to do. and by the way, so does mr. trump and i know he doesn t like it i shouldn t say this because debates are about expectations joe biden is going to climb donald trump in that debate. incumbent presidents rarely, rarely when the first debate, because they re used to having their rings kissed, shall we say? but mr. trump has talent. he does, and he s great at these rallies but he s never won a national presidential general election debate. he had to three against hillary, two gets biden in the polling, one or two point race, he consistently loses those debates by nine to 12 points. so honest earnest, free advice to mr. trump you need to hunker down and prepare for this. mr. mr. trump and i promise you, joe biden is you just broke the major one rule of pre debate expectations, right there. you re gonna get a golf. i spoke the truth apartment. i try never to do that with you, but once in a while sure. michael, if you are the trump campaign, a. the likelihood that they follow paul s advice and donald trump goes into debate prep. if you are donald trump or if you are the trunk campaign, what kind of prep would you have him do i mean luck in 2016, he had chris christie helping them out. chris christie and entrepreneur longer friends, so i don t think you can call up chris and say, hey, come and help us but i agree with paul. presidents usually don t do well during the first debate. so this is a very unique opportunity for the former president. and i think donald trump is really effective. john, at being able to communicate very simply in a simple way rather on issues that people really care about. so if you can figure out a way to drive and hone in that skill and more focused way on actual issues. i think the former president could potentially surprise people, but you have to be disciplined in order to do so. so i was spent a couple of days, maybe a week or so practicing these things, maybe some of his best zynga s figuring out a way to be more surgical with them during that one hour debate. and let s see what happens. but this could be, and i ll say this quickly, john. i don t think trump should debate president for a second time because to pause zero point presidents don t do well during the first debate, but they usually come back and knock it out of the park during the second debate. so if i m trump, i would try to hammer this in with a victory and say, you know what, that s it. i m not interested in debating number two. paul, very quickly share michael said the issues one of the issues is crime usually is an issue every four years and these new numbers out from the fbi, violent crime, going down, murder rate dropping dramatically could be the biggest drop. on record in one year how should the buying campaign talk about this in a way that it will connect with people absolutely. and i think it all about mr. trump catering to the most extreme and joe biden, big part of the mainstream are, let s report is right. young people and people of color really support the biden gun safety genic. guess what? or is it is it not, is it there s something else and what they think at this point is that it s doesn t necessarily appear to be more severe. it may be that they, the third person got infected in a different way. first two people may have touched the surface than touch their eyes, which is what often happens. this the third person who is a farm worker in michigan may have actually inhaled some of the virus. that s worth paying attention to what they have not seen. kate. and this is a big thing that they look out for. is there evidence then it spreads as a result of those respiratory symptoms to another human human, to human spread. and so far at this point, they have not seen that, but that s what they re looking for. in short of that, what are the other red flags that they re wanting four yeah. i think one thing is to see a look are there other mammals that are starting to get infected? there s lots of different mammals that have been infected so far. but are there other ones as well? because each time you get new mammals that are infected, especially ones that are closer and closer to humans you may, the virus may mutate into something that can more easily infect humans and they, and could potentially spread among humans. but one of the big ways to figure this out is tested sting. and kate, we talked about this a lot during the pandemic. are we doing enough testing? and the answer right now with h5n1 is that we re not, if you test a lot of people and you say, hey, there s a lot of people that are carrying the virus, but they re not getting sick that s an important message. it may mean that this is not as deadly or is making people sick as we thought testing is the key to sort of get an idea of just how widespread this is. i talked to rick bright, who s a virologist and immunologists about this specifically. and here s what he said. i really think that s a tip of the iceberg. we are not doing enough testing or the even the right kind of testing. to get a better answer to that question is really unusual that we would find just one or two cases with so much virus prevalent and so many places as such, close contact to the source, such as the infected cow or the milk supply every virologists that you ve talked to says we need to be doing more testing just like we said at the beginning of the covid pandemic. so that has to happen. and then again, looking for human to human transmission. that s where a lot of focuses it s good to see you, sanjay. thank you so much and a new episode of chasing life with sanjay gupta, the podcast available right now, jump. then there s this a dog ran for help after his owner crash to call our into a remote steep ravine and a national park in oregon. the man was traveling with his four dogs when he crashed. one of the dogs was able to get free and then walked slash, ran nearly four miles to the families camp site rescue crews, put up a pulley system to get the man who was airlifted to safety the three other dogs were found alive at the crash site. we are effort and comment kate, from them. he was waiting for that. i was like and where are we?
