Essex town councillor continues defiance on 'Chinese flu' tweets

Article content
The Town of Essex councillor who downplayed COVID-19 and called it the “Chinese flu” in tweets claims he’s been made the target of “cancel culture.”
“It is legal to utter the words ‘Chinese flu’ and people do so thousands of times per day, all over the world,” said a defiant Chris Vander Doelen during a town council meeting on Monday night.

“There was nothing racist or remotely hateful or even vaguely insulting about my tweets, and it is slanderous to suggest that.”

Integrity commissioner says councillor's tweets 'racist' and calls for apology

The integrity commissioner's report is contained within the agenda for the upcoming May 17 meeting of Essex Town Council. Members are expected to vote on whether they will adopt the integrity commissioner's recommendations.
Swayze said he received around 80 complaints from local residents and beyond in wake of Vander Doelen's tweets last month, including from many people with Asian backgrounds.
"I have served as integrity commissioner for multiple municipalities over the past 13 years and have never experienced an outpouring of such emotion over the behaviour of a member of Council. In that time my voice mailbox has never been filled until now," Swayze wrote.

Reader letter: Outrage over councillor's remarks seems bit much

Re: Town of Essex councillor under fire for COVID comment, by Dave Battagello, April 11
The recent eruption of outrage focused on Essex Coun. Chris Vander Doelen following his use of the expression “Chinese flu” was quite astonishing to me.

What has he done? Apparently, he has insulted the billion plus of Chinese people, so he is xenophobic, racist.
So what’s to be done with him? Present him before the integrity commissioner and perhaps cast him out of the realms of Essex town council into outer darkness.

But I was disappointed and outraged by what I believe was a racist tweet using the term “the Chinese Flu.”
Have you not read how many American-Asian and Canadian-Asian people have already been beaten, bullied, spat on and told to go back to China as a result of racist remarks by other politicians? A few have been killed in Atlanta and San Francisco.

Town of Essex approves additional, stricter rules for proxy voting

Article content
In the past, the forms could be obtained on the Internet or from candidates.
“No exceptions,” Auger stressed. “It has to be issued and stamped with that distinctive serial number from the clerk’s office.”
The person appointing the proxy will then provide the completed, stamped form and identification to the proxy, who will take that to the clerk’s office for certification. Only the clerk’s office can certify the application. In the past, applications could be certified at polling stations.
Coun. Chris Vander Doelen expressed concern that the “CIA-style” rules would make it more difficult for people who need a proxy to get one.

Only Proxy Application Forms that have been issued directly with serial number stamp by the Clerk s Office will be accepted for certification;
The person appointed as a Proxy will additionally be required to bring with them when they apply for certification, proof of identification of the elector who appointed them.
