'Two boys snogging was revolutionary': the greatest gay moments in cinema

Last modified on Fri 19 Mar 2021 15.40 EDT
The handheld phantasmagoria of The Last of England
Gus
Van Sant, director of My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting, To Die For, Milk
Derek Jarman’s The Last of England is an amazing barrage of memories, obsessions, cataclysmic visions, where Derek plays a gay memoirist writing his thoughts down. A skinhead boy shoots up; light flares; dances and stomps. A Caravaggio, and beautiful Tilda Swinton valiantly defaces her ballgown and the visuals of an England going past us in burning rubble and bright home movies. An amazing soundtrack by the genius Simon Turner.

British TV drama won't have another 'golden age' until commissioners take risks

British TV drama won’t have another ‘golden age’ until commissioners take risks
Russell T Davies is too optimistic – a diversity of backgrounds hasn’t led to a diversity of ideas, and our drama is largely solid, no more

Whenever we talk about the state of television drama in Britain, it is inevitable that the same point is made time and again. Things ain’t what they used to be. Critics like me carp on about how wonderful TV drama was in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties – all those Plays for Today that tackled a different subject every week; constant streams of adaptations of the classics; big, meaty novelistic dramas such as I, Claudius and The Forsyte Saga; state-of-the-nation epics such as The Boys From the Blackstuff. To misquote Harold Macmillan: “We never had it so good.”

Statewide No-Permit Concealed Carry Bill Reaches Senate

/
Rep. Seth Berglee, R-Joliet, walks the Senate Judiciary Committee through H.B. 102 while Shani Henry from Moms Demand Action watches.
A bill allowing people across the state to conceal-carry weapons without a permit, including on college campuses, is now working its way through the Montana Senate after passing the House of Representatives on party lines last week.
Rep. Seth Berglee, R-Joliet, is the sponsor of House Bill 102 and championed it at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday as a safety measure.
“My basic premise is that anywhere that a criminal has the ability to be armed, I think a law-abiding citizen should have the right to be armed," Berglee said.

Movie reviews: 'Our Friend' is a sensitive film that defines selfless giving

OUR FRIEND: 3 ½ STARS
Magazines may be becoming an artifact of the past, but Hollywood still looks to them for inspiration. In the last few years a half dozen movies found inspiration in the pages of "Esquire," "Vanity Fair" and "The New Yorker," including "The Friend," a new drama starring Dakota Johnson, Casey Affleck and Jason Segel and now playing in theatres and on-demand.
Based on Matthew Teague's "Esquire" article "The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word," the film uses a broken timeline, jumping back-and-forth to tell the true story of Teague's terminally ill wife Nicole and their friend-turned-nursemaid Dane. Affleck is Matt, a war correspondent with an attitude. "It's Friday," says his editor, "I've been tired of you since Wednesday." He's an up-and-comer, married to Nicole, a talented musical theatre performer played by Johnson. Her best pal at the theatre is Dane (Segel) a sad sack who can't seem to get a girlfriend. "It's not fair," she says. "I'm the only woman who knows how special you are."

Movies about class struggle in India, baby fears in N.Z., and a free screening of an activist's life story

Psycho Goreman: 2½
THE WHITE TIGER: Here’s a film that’s rich with themes and cutting observations about modern life, mostly about India where it takes place, but in a way just could be about anywhere. It shows the struggle to better yourself, stop being a servant, move up in class and bear the moral sacrifices you have to make to get there. Those ideas are in sharp focus in India’s class system, where, as the main character puts it, the only way out of poverty is crime or politics. Balram, played by newcomer Adarsh Gourav, starts with simple lying. He takes a job as a driver before he even has a licence. It’s OK in his mind because his employer is the son of the ruthless landlord who keeps people poor back in his home village.
