ukraine was planning to use a dirty bomb. more on that story in a moment. we first want to give a few minutes on the state of the war in the south of ukraine around the strategically important city of kherson. ukrainian officials say russia brought more military units there today, and russian missiles struck the nearby city of mykolaiv this weekend. that's where cnn chief international correspondent clarissa ward is tonight. she's focusing on the plight of civilians in both cities. >> reporter: by now, it has become a familiar routine in mykolaiv. in the relative calm of daylight hours, residents comb through the wreckage of the night before. on this day, it's an apartment building on the outskirts of town. two russian s-300 missiles hit at 1:00 in the morning. so this here is where the first strike hit, and then you can see the second one just smashed into the top of that building. five people were injured, but

morning. a cnn crew there witnessed groups of taliban fighters driving through the city, carrying their weapons, waving the white flag of the islamic emirate of afghanistan, as it's now known. >> the collapse of the country's capital city came during the rapid withdrawal of u.s. forces from afghanistan and led to a rush and chaotic evacuation of thousands of afghans. it was the end of two decades of war. but it also proved to be a turning point in the biden administration. joining us now, cnn kylie atwood is live from the state department. we begin with cnn chief international correspondent clarissa ward in kabul. you're there on the streets there in the city. how have things changed after one year of taliban rule? >> reporter: well, i -- sorry, we were being moved by the taliban because this area, this central round-about in kabul has basically become a gathering point for taliban fighters. they've been streaming through here all day to mark the one-year anniversary, it's a national holiday.

defeat the russian army. also breaking this morning, russian forces attempting to make a new push into the donbas region in the eastern part of the country, in luhansk, they have now taken control of a village there, kreminna. the battle lines i'm told by u.s. officials remain largely static. however, no major territorial gains on either side. the biden administration announcing a new round of economic sanctions against the kremlin. the russians taking the opportunity to test launch a new nuclear capable intercontinental ballistic missile, sometimes referred to by the name, if you can believe it, satan ii. putin said publicly on russian state tv, this launch should make russia's enemies think twice, a deliberate message in the midst of the war. u.s. officiales say they were not surprised by the launch. they saw it coming, they downplayed the threat. let's begin with cnn chief
