your foundation gives an enormous amount of money -- and i know you've spent a lot of time looking at this issue. what do you think of the common core? >> well, the common core is a fantastic piece of work. and if you really just take that issue and say is the way they define the math progression through the grades and what the basic knowledge should be is that well done, the answer is absolutely. it's fantastically better than what came before where things were out of order. some states didn't teach you enough to be able to take the college entrance exam. and so you were disadvantaged there. some states had things that were done in a different form than they appear on the college entrance exam. so you get lower scores just because the notation and the way it was taught was different. in the past, the u.s. designed math textbooks by committee.

basic knowledge should be is not well done. the answer is absolutely. it's fantastically better than what came before where things were out of order. some states didn't teach you enough to be able to take the college entrance exam. and so you were disadvantaged there. some states had things that were done in a different form than they appear on the college entrance exam. so you get lower scores just because the notation and the way it was taught was different. in the past the u.s. designed math textbooks by committee. and our textbooks are twice as big as other countries' textbooks. and what it led to is we try to teach too much every year. we don't teach it well. and so other sisystems are just blowing us away in math. as we switch like in kentucky who was first to adopt the common core they've seen substantial gains in their math learning. so it's a very good design. it means you can go up to websites and look at their material and then have it match what you're learning.

he leaked this information. we know that snowden tried to leak material to him months before eric clapper made that statement. this is one of many false payments made. >> what difference does that make? >> he was collecting billions of classified documents for years. >> is there ever a justification to break the rules and leak something? >> i think that there may be justification. if you go through this to make sure that it won't hurt you why didn't he ask to meet with senator wyden. i know having been in the committee, there are many members who come to us and say that we have something we have to tell you, don't give running away. there are people who claim otherwise. i know that the system works. >> one question is whether he revealed secrets that endanger

can have any long-term impact on isis. representative ed royce is on the house foreign and affairs committee and says what is the key how the u.s. uses that ring of data that they collected at the mission site. >> as i understand it, quite a treasure trove of information that might allow us to find out who offshore is also funding isis when you hear about money coming in from other countries into isis. >> reporter: some congressional leaders were briefed on this mission on friday ahead of time and we are also told that there will be additional congressional briefings coming up this week. >> what about some concerns from some lawmakers that not only is isis not on the defensive, but that isis might be gaining grounds in iraq? >> reporter: well, that is exactly right, victor, and what we saw coming from many of the lawmakers, reactions noting that, at the same time, isis seems to be making significant

but not run the federal reserve. this is a talking piece. i believe it's a sound piece of legislation. we will be -- i'm sure it will be amended, substituted, and debated for a few months now. but i think this is a good start. the level of debate is in a positive area. >> and you've talked specifically about criteria used to designate systemically important financial institutions. this is some of the issues that business is talking about. they don't see themselves as systemically important to the broad global economy. >> i totally agree with you. i think it's been an overreach. you take some of the big insurance companies, the insurance model is different from the banks. the federal reserve has admitted this in testimony before our committee. we're trying to make some common sense out of dodd-frank and it's going to be very difficult. >> senator, good to have you on the show today. thank you so much for your insights. >> thank you. >> senator richard shelby there. the economy, by some indicators growing at a snail's

served on the foreign relations committee i chaired middle east subcommittee, i'm passionate and interesting in what's happening internationally. >> you're going to run on your credentials you're going to have to go after hillary clinton. where is she the weakest in your opinion? >> i think on judgment. i've been talking about the iraq war. we were both there in 2002 we made a huge mistake, one of the biggest in american history, and i did my home work. now, with 4,000 dead americans it's going to cost us $6 trillion, that shows a lack of judgment. now, we're hearing about the clinton foundation donations at the same time, she's making decisions that are just poor judgment. >> how to you process the foundation situation? eve it was contrived to make money for the clintons? do you believe any of those things?

that was captured. >> did you get knit background on this or know this was coming? >> we did not. we will be fully briefed. of course, we went out of session on friday before this raid actually was under taken and it would not be unusual, of course, for the president to alert the leadership of the congress, but those of us who are not in the leadership, who are simply on that committee we will be briefed next week. >> can you put that into context? we're talking syria a snatch and grab. this was something highlighted earlier on the broadcast that had it been just to take out abu sayaf and anybody who might be with him, they could have used a drone to do that. they, instead, as you say, put boots on the ground. >> yeah, that's right. there's a couple of things worth noting. remember, in addition to killing abu sayaf and gathering the intelligence, they also captured his wife. she may -- if she had an operational role she may be a
