As 2020 draws to a close, Pass the Remote revisits some of the standout full-length films that had Bay Area ties. This week, we'll count down some of the best, but by no means all, documentaries. Next week, we'll spotlight narrative features.
"Crip Camp": Oakland filmmakers James LeBrecht and Nicole Newnham's Sundance Film Festival winner is not only inspiring and educational, but it's also lively, funny and even raunchy. Part memoir on an influential, rowdy summer camp for teenagers with disabilities in the Catskills but mostly a chronicle of the disabled-rights movement and its roots in the Bay Area, "Crip Camp" opens eyes, minds and hearts. It also celebrates the remarkable achievements of the determined leaders in the movement, and how they fought for change. (Available on Netflix)

Can-do spirit: 'Dear Santa' tells stories of 'elves' who spread Christmas cheer

Not all of Santa’s elves work their magic at the North Pole.
From California to Arizona, from Chicago to New York City, some of Santa’s finest helpers perform miracles every holiday season for thousands upon thousands of children who otherwise might not find anything under the Christmas tree. Pour a cup of cheer and toast filmmaker Dana Nachman for telling the stories of some of these elves and the families who have benefited from the fruits of their tireless volunteer labor in “Dear Santa,” a sprightly feel-good documentary that comes at a time when we could use a lift – and serves as a reminder there are an awful lot of truly good people in this world.

The best Christmas and holiday movies for cord-cutters

Let It Snow.
At a glance,
Let It Snow (2019) looks like one of those thousands of annoying, syrupy Christmas romance movies, but it’s actually surprisingly heartfelt and sweet. It tells several intertwining stories of troubled, yet hopeful teens as they try to figure out life. Julie (Isabela Moner) has been accepted at Columbia University but is reluctant to leave her sick mother. She meets pop star Stuart Bale (Shameik Moore) and makes a connection with him while eating at a run-down restaurant called “Waffle Town” (the “W” has fallen off the sign; say it out loud). Waffle Town employee Dorrie (Liv Hewson) is having girl trouble, as well as best-friend trouble. Tobin (Mitchell Hope) is secretly in love with his best friend “Duke” (Kiernan Shipka). And aspiring DJ Keon (Jacob Batalon) hopes to throw a huge party in Waffle Town as a snowstorm approaches. Joan Cusack co-stars as a strange woman who drives around wearing tin foil, and who helps out brokenhearted Addie (Odeya Rush). D’Arcy Carden appears as Stuart’s snippy publicist.

Santa-approved films to chase away the 2020 blues

Santa-approved films to chase away the 2020 blues
By Dana Barbuto
We could all use some holiday cheer in 2020, and luckily, you can find some in front of a screen. Pour the eggnog, spike it if you choose, and get all nestled and snug on your couch to watch one these new Santa-approved Christmas-themed movies:
"Godmothered"
Eleanor (Jillian Bell), an aspiring fairy godmother, is on a mission to give a happiness makeover to a reluctant Mackenzie (Isla Fisher), a 40-year-old single mom and widow who lives in Boston in this fantasy comedy. The movie was filmed across the city in January through March.  From Charlestown to Copley Square, director Sharon Maguire (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”) bathes the city in a cheerful holiday glow with twinkling lights and rows and rows of festive garland.  Other scenes were shot at City Hall, Boston Common and the North End. A deconsecrated church in Lowell was used for the interiors of The Motherland, the make-believe world where fairy godmothers live. The familiar sites certainly add to the enjoyment, but the odd-couple dynamic between Bell (overly enthusiastic) and Fisher (overly cynical) enlivens it even more. This is a Disney fairy tale, so there are loads of sparkle, frill, enchantment, wands and woodland creatures, to be sure. But the movie also dabbles in some of the progressive touches the studio has trended toward in movies like “Frozen” and the live-action “Cinderella.” Expect lots of humor and heart and a different spin on happily ever after.  “Godmothered,” also stars June Squibb, Jane Curtin, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Jillian Shea Spaeder and Willa Skye.
