From Believe's $600m IPO to Hipgnosis and Influence Media's catalog deals: It's MBW's Weekly Round-up

From Believe’s $600m IPO to Hipgnosis and Influence Media’s catalog deals: It’s MBW’s Weekly Round-up
May 14, 2021
Welcome to Music Business Worldwide’s weekly round-up – where we make sure you caught the five biggest stories to hit our headlines over the past seven days. MBW’s round-up is supported by Centtrip, which helps over 500 of the world’s best-selling artists maximise their income and reduce their touring costs.
The biggest story in the global music rights industry this year will be, if all goes well, Universal Music Group‘s entry onto the public market in Amsterdam.
UMG looks likely to be beaten to the stock exchange in Europe, however, by Believe – the indie artist and label services company headquartered in Paris.

“Darcus informed us of his decision to return to the U.K. for personal reasons and to pursue new career opportunities there,” the statement reads. “We fully support his decision and we are thankful to Darcus for his many contributions to Island Records throughout the years.”
More from Variety
While the label enjoyed success during Beese’s stint with Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato and recently signed Sabrina Carpenter, the label did not have a high profile and sources say there was unhappiness with its failure to attract hip-hop talent.

If Sabrina Carpenter wanted to start off her career at Island Records with a bang, she succeeded: Even before word of her signing with the label had been announced, she’d dropped a headline-grabbing new single called “Skin.”
Carpenter praised Island president/CEO Darcus Beese and the Island staff in a statement. “I’m so excited to join the Island Records family,” she says. “Darcus and the team really understood my vision from the moment we first met. They just got me and have been super supportive. It’s the perfect place for me to start the next chapter of my music career and evolution as an artist. I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’re working on for this year!”

The week in audio: Death of a Headmaster; Did Ya Know and more

Death of a Headmaster | BBC Sounds
OTHERtone with Pharrell, Scott and Fam-Lay | Google Podcasts
Twenty-five years ago last week, Philip Lawrence was stabbed. He was the headteacher at St George’s school in Maida Vale, north-west London, and had stepped in to protect a pupil who was being attacked at the school gates by teenagers from another school. Lawrence died later the same day. One of his former pupils, broadcaster Edward Adoo, presents
Death of a Headmaster, a touching and fair-minded Radio 4 documentary about Lawrence and his legacy.
“He was stabbed through the heart by someone who didn’t care about the values of the heart,” says Lawrence’s widow, Frances. His death “decimated” her life, along with those of their children, and her testimony is both devastating and inspirational. After the stabbing, there was “an outpouring of vitriol against young people”, so she set up the Philip Lawrence awards to celebrate positive actions by teenagers.
