welcome back. after nearly a month of silence, north korea has finally confirmed custody of u.s. soldier travis king. in the first comment about king since he ran across the dmz in july state media in north korea says king confessed that he came to north korea to escape maltreatment and racial discrimination within the u.s. army and wanted to seek refuge there or in a third country. again, that's what north korea is claiming are. the pentagon says it can't confirm those comments and is focused on getting king safely back to the u.s. let's go to nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley. matt, do we know what this means for efforts to get king back to the u.s.? >> yeah, ana, there's no way to predict this kind of thing. this was really the missing piece, though. this is a big deal. four weeks after he dashed across the border, north korea has finally acknowledged that they even have private king, ask we heard from the pentagon that they're focused on private king's safe return. it sounds like regardless of the

korean state media. as you rightly point out the first public acknowledgment of private travis king's presence there coming from pyongyang. and i think it's safe to say that defense officials here view the report coming from north korean state media with a healthy measure of skepticism. a u.s. defense official told us after the report came out that they could not verify the alleged claims. instead, the defense official said the focus of the u.s. remains on bringing travis king home. in terms of what was in this report, north korean state media claims that king had confessed that he illegally intruded into north korea from a tour in the joint security area there on the border there, the dmz, and that he, quote, harbored ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the u.s. army. so it seems there that at least according to north korean state media that king had confessed to running over, that he was trying to escape the u.s. army. meanwhile, a spokesperson for travis king's family responded by saying ms. gates, that is, king's mother, is aware of today's report, quotes, from

who ran across the border into north korea. now, in just a few moments i'm going to speak with travis king's entire family in their first interview since his detention. but first the state department is now confirming north korea did reach out to the united nation's command at the demilitarized zone in the last 48 hours but says it was not a substantive call, and they don't see it as progress. now, you'll recall back on july 10th king was released from the south korean detention facility. he was expected to fly back to the u.s. just a week later. but after king passed through security, he apparently told his staff that his passport was missing. he was then escorted back outside as far as we know. then the next day he had reservations for a joint security area tour, joining other tourists it seemed as they went into the dmz that separates the north from the south. now, during that tour he apparently broke off from the group and ran off across the
