russian military leaders have been feuding over the war in ukraine with prigozhin accusing russian military leadership of essentially leaving russian troops and prigozhin's troops to die without sufficient equipment and ammunition. u.s. officials scrambled friday night to get a hold on what was happening. emergency meetings were called across the entire government about the rapidly unfolding situation. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, mark milley, was also scheduled to travel to the middle east this weekend, a trip he actually ended up canceling in order to stay in washington and monitor the unfolding events. national security adviser jake sullivan was also scheduled to take a trip to denmark to attend a conference, but he ended up attending that conference virtually instead. and he is now at camp david with president biden and is briefing him on all of the latest updates with regard to what is going on in russia. u.s. and western officials continuing to monitor all these fast-moving developments very closely. however, it is unclear at this

natasha a, what is the u.s. intelligence community watching out for right now? what are you learning? >> this community had actually picked up signs that prigozhin was planning a potentially dramatic military action against russian defense leaders. it was not clear what form that would take or when it would occur and the speed with which this happened on friday night into saturday did kcatch some u.s. and western officials off guard and resulted in emergency meetings convened on friday night and u.s. officials scrambling to figure out what was going on and crucially how far prigozhin would be willing to go. it was also unclear what prigozhin's ultimate aim was going to be. was he going to challenge putin directly or was he just challenging russia's military leadership. now u.s. officials are watching very closely to see how putin continues to react to these events because, obviously, this is one of the most serious challenges to his leadership that he has seen in 20 years of rule there. so u.s. officials are looking at

whereabouts of prigozhin. what is the u.s. intelligence community saying this morning? >> reporter: yeah, the u.s. intelligence community saw signs as recently as early this week that prigozhin was potentially planning some kind of dramatic action against russian military leaders and there were actually signs according to one western intelligence official that prigozhin and wagner forces were actually massing weapons and ammunition to prepare for some kind of challenge to russian defense leaders. now, it was not clear what that would actually look like, would he actually storm a russian city, for example, or would he simply challenge russian leaders inside ukraine. not clear. it was unclear when this would take place. that's why we saw u.s. officials scrambling on friday night and into saturday to figure out what was happen with emergency meetings convened across the government and senior u.s. officials canceling international travel to stay in d.c. to monitor the events. u.s. officials are looking at how this is actually going to,

ukraine. it's in historical moments when -- >> it's historical moment we are good defeats evil. terrell, tell me about what you think, if anything, the country supporting ukraine right now are thinking and doing strategically? i've been seeing those from the british military, the british government, that they are holding emergency meetings, canadians are holding emergency meetings. everybody is getting ready for something. i don't know what the something is what's your sense of what that something could be? >> well, the something that people, i think that something is more possibilities, because right now, if prigozhin it's able to go to moscow, a lot of people don't think that that would happen because ultimately, the challenge that -- he's going against a regime in which he may not have the best relationships with the key lead within the military. and so, right now that's probably the issue. mthe possibility could be that

it was really hard to tell whether that tension was actually going to result in something like this. as beth sanders said earlier this hour, it is really difficult for u.s. intelligence officials to predict that kind of tipping point. and so when all of this happened last night, it really did catch u.s. and western and european and other officials off guard, because of the speed with which it unfolded. we are told that u.s. officials did convene emergency meetings across the administration last night, to figure out exactly what was going on, and how to respond. but we're also told that they have been very careful here not to weigh in publicly, because they simply do not want to give russian president vladimir putin any fodder to be able to say that the u.s. and the west is interfering in any way, or of course, that they are actually fanning the flames of what they are calling an armed rebellion by prigozhin, and the wagner group. and now, it is unclear to u.s. and european officials just how far in advance prigozhin had been planning this attack. again, they did not see any overt signs that prigozhin was

caught offguard by how fast this all escalated because they of course have been watching closely the deteriorating relationship between prigozhin and the russian ministry of defense, with prigozhin repeatedly accusing the russian military of depriving his troops and of russian troops inside ukraine with key ammunition and other equipment and essentially living them there to die. but they didn't know at what point this would reach this tipping point and few could predict, according to our sources, just how far prigozhin would be willing to go here, in terms of actually storming rostov-on-don, and moving his forces even further towards moscow. that was not something that u.s. officials were anticipating, and last night, we are told they did convene emergency meetings across the u.s. government, to try to assess the situation, which of course is very concerning to u.s. and western officials, because of the instability that it creates inside russia, which is a nuclear armed state. so they're watching this very closely, the brits as well, have convened an emergency meeting to
