Record-setting $49 billion Asia IPO boom likely to taper off, shows data

As in the US, initial public offering activity out of Asia has had its strongest-ever start to a year. That frenzy for new shares is likely to taper off as demand falls back to earth in the next few months.
Asian companies, like their global peers, notched their best first quarter for listings ever, thanks to a flood of liquidity during the pandemic, super-low interest rates, and rallying stock markets. The firms raised $49.3 billion through first-time share sales at home and abroad -- a 154% jump over the same period in 2020, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
IPOs globally raised an unprecedented $215 billion, with almost half of that haul coming from the record wave of issuance by special-purpose acquisition companies in the US. Now, a global rotation out of highly-valued tech and health-care stocks that have dominated market activity, as well as fading excitement around SPACs in the U.S., is clouding the outlook for new deals.

5 Lessons Learned at the Golden Globes: From the Call for Diversity to Awkward Zooms

The Golden Globes were held on Sunday, and we learned so much as we continue on into the awards season — but the lessons may not be what we had expected in this extended pandemic year. Here are some of the things we learned from the first big awards show of 2021:
The elephant in the awards room regarding diversity
If you look over the past week of events for the HFPA, it’s been undoubtedly one of the most challenging as an organization. From the LA Times story regarding the complete lack of Black members on Sunday, Feb. 21, to

BEST TV SERIES (DRAMA)
AWARDS COMMENTARY:
Personally, we wouldn’t be mad to see a surprise victory by “Lovecraft Country” here. That show managed to explore the topics of racial injustice and violence, particularly in the Jim Crow era, through the lens of pulp horror — and to amazing results. But alas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t nominate its stars, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, leaving us to wonder how committed they are to the HBO series. “The Mandalorian” was an Emmy victor several times over thanks to various craft categories, and “Ratched” comes from the awards bait of Mr. Ryan Murphy. But it likely comes down to two other Netflix dramas: “Ozark” and “The Crown.” “Ozark” boasts a compelling, dark mystery and the power of stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner. But my money’s on “The Crown,” which won in 2017 and made headlines in its fourth season thanks to the addition of Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson). Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II as she copes with family crisis and matching Thatcher’s wits made this an extra memorable cycle. “The Crown” feels like the natural choice.

After a year of pandemic-induced upheaval, as employees and bosses wonder about lasting changes to work life, a consultant's report predicts that when the coronavirus crisis is over, a huge number of people in the Washington region will continue doing their jobs remotely, causing significant pain in some parts of the economy.
"The effects of a moderate to substantial shift to remote work in the Capital Region will not be felt evenly across geography, industry or occupation," according to the study, released Tuesday by the Greater Washington Partnership, a business alliance.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Co-Host Golden Globes on Separate Coasts (EXCLUSIVE)

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Co-Host Golden Globes on Separate Coasts (EXCLUSIVE)

The 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards is going bicoastal. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, returning to helm the the ceremony for the first time since 2015, won’t be in the same room together: Instead, Fey will broadcast live from The Rainbow Room (at the top of Rockefeller Center) in New York City, while Poehler will host from the Globes’ usual spot inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.
This marks the first time that the Golden Globes has been beamed from multiple locations in its 78-year history, but not the first time an awards show has been simultaneously held in both New York and Los Angeles, as the Oscars did it for several years in the mid-1950s. The decision to station Fey on the East Coast and Poehler on the West Coast comes as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC and Globes producers Dick Clark Prods. continue to iron out plans for this year’s awards show and adjust to the realities of mounting such a telecast during the COVID-19 pandemic.
