physical and mental health are right now? >> i have been slowly improving, so that's the good news. it has been a long road of trauma of emotional trauma and physical as well. it has taken its toll, but at the same time there is recovery and hope. >> you know, mylissa i want to stay with you for a second, because i want to viewers that are tuning in right now to understand, this is a pregnancy that you wanted, a pregnancy and a baby hoe to be able to bring into and create a family. the fact that you kept on literally getting turned away repeatedly by medical providers, when you asked them why, what were the excuses that were given to you? >> the first hospital that i went to in freeman, in joplin, was that the law was not clear enough because i had a positive fetal heartbeat, that they could not intervene. the second time, when we went
>> as we show you drone video, you get a picture for how the destruction goes on further than the eye can see with this unique tornado. the governor says the death toll is 74 with 108 or so missing. one of the things that we saw with the candle factory, people are not just missing as they're out of town. cell towers and land lines are down. people worry about their immediate problems as opposed to getting in touch with others. so hopefully the amount of people missing, hopefully they're unaccounted for. one of the things i have to tell you, i covered a lot of tornadoes, i covered an f-5 in joplin that parked itself for a long time. i've never seen anything like this one. generally a tornado will bounce along. you can see the beginning and the end of the destruction. here we had one that went to the
a separate storm killed three people yesterday and listen to this, it was eight years to the day after that monster tornado killed more than 160 people in joplin, i still remember those images these years later. we are joined on the phone by brett powell jr. he just lived through a long harrowing night on the outskirts of jefferson city there. i want to show you now some video he shot in the midst of i it. >> whoa. that's the power lines, right? >> yeah. >> joined now by brett powell. brett, so you live in the town of eldin close to jefferson city. you heard those sirens, we heard them there on the video you shot. tell us what the first sign of trouble was and did you have enough time to get to safety? >> good morning. well, we were aware that the storms were coming through, i had been tuned into what was going on in joplin and carl's
injuries, the primary wave of injuries, sometimes you can have injuries inside your body without any external obvious signs. people who have symptoms, abdal pain, don't blow that off. half of tornado related injuries, true in '99 here, true after joplin, half of the injuries occur after the storm. people walking around in the debris. the fire chief coming to talk to us stepped on a nail. that continues to happen. minor perhaps, but can be quite significant as well. >> also important, your kids. you are told me, kids usually show the way they are going with head injuries, stuff like this. situations like this, you need to pay closer attention to your children because -- >> in the first few days afterward, it may seem like everything is okay. not talking about it, they seem to be playing with their
sister maggie. we go back on occasions to make sure everything is okay. we just returned a week ago from we were there a few weeks.gs. and jean returned after her week in west, texas, after the fertilizer plant explosion. >> really. almost 1,000 people have to move out of town because of that. how long do you stay in one place? >> well, in newtown, we expected to be there five days, we were there five weeks. in joplin, missouri, we didn't know how long, but we ended up spending eight weeks. seven days a week. we had teams rotating in and out every other week. jackson and louie are going to be here with us. >> the tornado vets. so do the situations size up to what you dealt with in joplin? >> every disaster, every tragedy is different. there's no explanation and words for the emotions that people go through. and they're all devastating. >> how are you making yourself available here in moore?
seven blocks maybe. and that's just the tip of it. i mean, i could sit here and talk with you for 30 minutes and be driving down the road at this point and have stuff to show you. it is so widespread, it is so devastating. and, again, shepard, as you've kind of mentioned, the fact this is a major populated area, this was not out in a rural farming community. this is a suburb of oklahoma city, a major metropolitan area in this country. and that's why the destruction is so great as you drive through. that's why it's so widespread. and really quite astonishing. you know, you don't ever want to diminish the fact that 24 people lost their lives, ten of those young children, two of those infants. you never want to diminish that. but the fact that there were not more than 100 people killed like in joplin, missouri, we saw for example. it's astonishing when you see that someone was in one of those homes we've been showing you and they came out alive. shepard. >> yeah. it really is. casey stegall with a really
before image of a residential neighborhood in moore, oklahoma. you see row after row of well-built brick houses, houses that today are no longer there. mike bettis joined us earlier from roughly that same neighborhood that you're looking at now to show us the afterpicture in a community that looks very, very different. >> well, it's one of those scenes, it's devastating right now. you look at what is going on here in moore and you look behind us here and this town has just been mowed down. it is one of those scenes that we don't see all that often. maybe you see this in joplin, missouri, two years ago and we know what the scene was there. this is an area that has well-built home, framed homes. so the problem with this is that we've got search and rescue here, the city of oklahoma city that has to go house by house by

equally unpopular budget visions, though. >> try to put the horns on paul ryan, they do not fit as snugly as they do on newt gingrich. we'll see. coming up, kelly ayotte will join us. also, starbucks president and ceo howard schultz. tina brown. and later, oprah's longtime partner steadman graham. up next, the top stories in the politico playbook. but first, the latest on the tornadoes in texas. here's bill karins. >> well, tractor-trailers that look like toys. that's what we saw live on tv yesterday afternoon. the dallas, texas, metroplex area. and there they are. literally, 1,600 pounds tossed in the air, 100 to 200 feet and suspended for at least a couple of seconds. these tornadoes moved through the region pretty quickly and bounced and skipped. they were not on the ground the whole time, and these were not 200 mile per hour storms like tuscaloosa dealt with in joplin.
who are really good. >> here, our producer sent an e-mail saying send your photos. this is my daughter with my husband and this is yesterday just hanging out. >> you weren't at a baseball game yesterday? >> we were at a baseball game. this is kya and christian, the big debate yesterday at my house. i don't know if you can see close enough, my daughter has both of her front teeth missing. my son lost a tooth a couple of weeks ago when he ate a chicken nugget and he swallowed it. he had a second tooth loose, he said it was bleeding and going to come out in the pool. it didn't yet. it's hanging on. >> does he have a cell phone? we could track this. >> he's sleeping, i hope, right now. yes but i'll keep you posted. >> we hope you had a restful holiday weekend. let's talk about what's going on in joplin, missouri. no rest for the weary there. they continue to clean up.
