gilgo beach murders investigation. jean, what's the latest. >> latest is they have identified one of the vic dems. 11 victims were found in the gilgo beach area and now we know that karen vergada is one that disappeared in 1996. now they have a name and they can go back to phone records. they can see if there is phone ping is available. they can talk to people that knew her and who she was last with. a car they may have seen. there's so much they can do to solve this unsolved homicide. her body was found in two different locations. fire island and long island. investigators say that what happened back in 2022 is when they finally got that dna able to put it through genetic
interesting. obviously there was a dismemberment here, and there were 11 others in that area. three of them have been charged to rex heuermann, but there were many dismembered and their parts were found in various areas of long island, of the beaches. and so there is a similarity right there. so, do you have two alleged serial killers going on? this is far from over. >> more the possibility of a change in methods. we discussed that with brianna a couple hours ago. horrendous for the family to learn the details. jean, thanks so much. brianna? next, six white police officers pleaded guilty of torturing two black men in mississippi for nearly two hours. we are hearing from the victims. plus, a reenactment of the massacre at marjory stoneman douglas high school is under way. we're going to take you live to parkland to tell you the reason why next. thing go right ♪ ♪ it takes two to make it outta sight ♪ ♪ one, two, get loose now ♪
have you seen me scramble? she was known only as fire island jane doe, one of the gilgo beach murder victims. but now we know her real identity. new york officials say she is karen vergata, a 34-year-old whose remains were among a dozen sets along the ocean park wei on the south shore of long island. she went missing in february 1996. two months later her feet and legs were found along fire island. 15 years later her skull was discovered in nassau county. jean joins us now with more details. jean, a case that remained a mystery for more than three decades. tell us what we know about this victim and potential ties to this case. >> reporter: we know that she was a new york city resident.
from the students, from the teachers and faculty there, play into this larger question of rehabilitation, which ultimately gets to with parole or without parole on that life sentence? >> yeah, victor, good morning to you. look, there's very compelling testimony with respect to him being irreparably damaged. what do i mean by that? when you look at the nature of the premeditation, when you look at the hate in his heart, the specifics of what he did, how he did it, how he planned for it, the google searches he entered into, knowing what he was doing, it's very difficult. when you look at the legal standard which are you irreparably damaged, can you be a productive member of society, that's a difficult question. that's why jean and the defense spoke to experts that he may
>> what did you say? >> i said are you okay? and what's going on? >> reporter: ethan did not respond to her. she called him by name, he'd known her for years. he kept walking but didn't shoot her. the defense case now is putting on expert witnesses. they're trying to show the shooter can be rehabilitated in prison. that is one of the miller factors according to this mandatory hearing, mandated by the u.s. constitution and the eighth amendment to see if ethan crumbably can be allowed to have at some point potential of release. jim? >> good lord. the testimony of that one student there, just the decision in that moment, one student dies, the other lives. and of course here are the faces of the four of them that lost their lives that day. jean, thanks so much for bringing us that story.
