in effectiveness of masking is crystal clear. today, instead of hanging their heads in shame, as the biden administration discusses a belated plan to send every household high quality n95 respirator masks, we -- saying stuff like this. >> we shouldn't just willie nearly send them to everyone. it's really a waste of money, and a waste of resources. >> a waste of money? senator bernie sanders -- a cosponsoring a bill to send every person a package of n95 masks, something they say would just cost five billion dollars. to put that in context, last month, congress passed a 768 million dollar defense bill, which was 20 -- then the biden administration and asked for. still, some in this administration or actually resisting the plan to send out free masks. kill me now. according to now, political -- just the n95 or, kn95 masks to

effects not only on the students is and their learning, their social, emotional welfare, but also on the families themselves. >> reporter: now, the mayor has met the teacher union's, some of their demands. she agrees that there needs to be more tests in schools. she agrees that there needs to be more masks and so she's provided, she says, kn95 masks for any teacher, staff, student who wants one, but the biggest contention here is that the teachers are saying they don't feel comfortable going back to school inside the classroom until january 18th when they suspect that the surge here in chicago will subside, and the mayor says that that's a nonstarter. that is not negotiable. she wants teachers and students back in school immediately, andrea. >> megan, thank you very much. and joining us now the senior scholar at the johns hopkins center for health security at the bloomberg school of public health. dr. daja, as a country we've hit 60 million cases, 10 million in the last month alone, so how

likely the case is it will protect against serious illness. it may not protect against the same type of symptoms, runny nose, -- so we still may be dealing with some of that disruption, we'll have to see. but, if it does indeed protect us against serious illness, that is very good news, because that's gonna mean that the country will have severe protection, at least for the next midterm. >> there was reporting in politico today, in which a senior administration official argued that the effort to send surgical grade mask, and 95, kn95, like actual respirator masks, to americans would make little difference, because half the country won't wear any mask. a lot of people were very upset by. this i want to ask you a broader question, for people who voted for joe biden, support him, saying he voted for him -- trump's office obviously a disaster, crazy. but, i can get tests, i can get masks, i'm going through

if correctly fitted. >> we do want to make sure they fit properly so you don't want air escaping from the sides, underneath or around the eyes. got to make sure it's really snug. but it's an effective mask. that's the thing. >> reporter: one expert says n95s are very similar to kn95s because they both have high efficiency filters. but the n95 has a slight edge over the kn95. >> it provides a better fit to your face. if a mask doesn't fit your face well, it's going to leak. >> reporter: another key question, can you wear an n95 or kn95 more than once? yes, says one expert. >> you can wear an n95, a rule of thumb is up to 40 hours of use. the filter in an n95 respirator does not go bad for days to weeks. >> reporter: experts now say with omicron, it's high time to upgrade from cloth. >> cloth masks are little more than facial decorations. there is no place for them in light of omicron. >> reporter: some health experts believe there's been way too much confusion over mask wearing

in a moment, i would love to get there as well. because the big question is, what about kiddoes? there is no n95-grade-type mask for children. federal authorities don't actually regulate masks that are n95 quality for kids. so it's left to us to say, what is good for a child? the best masks are the ones they will wear. and i have no financial conflicts of interests, for anybody wondering. we use happy masks, these have ear loops for the tight fit, they're multilayered, or a kf94. if you go to behealthyusa, you can google it. i'll put this on, even though this is not meant for me. you can see there's room between the nose and the mouth, it juts out, so it's more comfortable for kids. it's the same quality as a kn95.
