Seneca County businesses struggling despite federal stimulus

Here comes the money.
Throughout March residents began receiving stimulus checks as part of the latest round of COVID relief signed into law by President Joe Biden. To that end, there was more than $12 billion for New York State. Around $10 billion more is being divided up between counties, local municipalities, and other entities.
That money will be essential, according to Jeff Shipley of the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce. He serves as president and CEO of the organization, which advocates on behalf of businesses. His agency has been one of the most vocal, not only because it has needed to be during the pandemic, but also because Seneca County is uniquely positioned in the heart of the Finger Lakes.

A key group of essential workers in New York State are strangely still unable to get vaccinated: farmworkers.
As of March 10, anyone 60 years and older can sign up for the vaccine in the Empire State. Grocery, restaurant, delivery workers and other “public-facing” employees in various nodes of the food industry have been eligible since late February.
But farmworkers — including those milking cows, feeding chickens and picking tomatoes in close quarters inside greenhouses — are still not among those who may sign up for vaccination. Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern, an associate professor of food studies and nutrition at Syracuse University, argues that this is nonsensical. “There’s really no job that could be more essential than farm workers,” Minkoff-Zern told

History repeats itself: Amid crisis, Cuomo hopes to fuel optimism in State of the State

By Tom Precious
News Albany Bureau Chief
ALBANY – It was only 12 months ago, in his annual State of the State address, that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo declared that “our ship of state is stronger than it has been in decades.”
A year later, under the weight of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed nearly 39,000 New Yorkers, shuttered businesses and left the finances of families as well as state and local governments in tatters, Cuomo gives his 11th State of the State on Monday. It will be followed by additional speeches on specific topic areas until Thursday.
Yet, Cuomo, like governors before him facing enormous challenges, can be expected to give an obvious bow to the troubles facing the state while providing a path, however murky it might seem, to better times.
