>> it was wow. what detail, the number of defendants, the number of lawyers, it's really a blockbuster indictment. it's really zeroing in on one state. we know these election interference actions were take nbc a bunch of states, but when you drill down on what happened in georgia, all the different strands of that conspiracy come out in this indictment. it's pretty overwhelming. >> we heard from fani willis that she's going to do this hopefully within six months and with all 19 defendants. i covered the oath keepers trial. that had 12 people. they broke it into two different cases. can yshe do this? >> it won't be 19 defendants, because what will start to happen is we'll see movement. people will plead out because they will be given good deals. people will flip and plead guilty and become cooperating witnesses. so people will start out of the case, but it's still impossible it can happen within six months.

fbi. and i think this stewart rhodes sentencing, the end of the oath keepers trial, the end of the proud boys trial and the upcoming sentencing is putting a little bit of an opening for federal prosecutors to bring forward a lot of these outstanding cases that are still related to january 6th. these are the ones that will break through. they are really hoping for that general deterrence that they speak about frequently during the sentencing hearings. they're hoping the message gets through. two people who may be tempted to participate in something like this in the future, hoping this will have an impact and make sure that they don't do that going forward. when you have a candidate who is openly supporting january 6th defendants and hugging them the at campaign events and playing videos featuring their voices in a prison choir at his campaign rallies. there's a mixed message there for sure when you have a party, or part of a party that is

prosecutions related to january 6th trying to put this on the feet of donald trump saying that that was not these guys, it was donald trump. in closing arguments i think it was enrique tarrio's attorney saying tarrio was a scapegoat for trump and those in power, and that's what doj was trying to do. that turn in all of this when it comes to the defense teams and how they tried to turn this and say, no, this really was on donald trump and how all of these people are scapegoats because of it is interesting. >> it is interesting because go back to the oath keepers trial. and the oath keepers is a running joke the proud boys -- these are former military, former law enforcement, people with training, that's how they, you know, had that bearing with their tactical gear and communication systems. but the proud boys, you know, were on the receiving end of, you know, that message from donald trump, stand back and standby. standby for what? and after the message that he

case, of course seditious conspiracy is the most serious charge that carries up to 20 years behind bars if convicted. but even if we don't get a conviction or even a verdict, a unanimous verdict on all of these charges, can you remind us what the different charges are that we'll be listening to hear verdicts on? >> yeah, you know, the obstruction of an official proceeding charge has the same exposure, criminal exposure for a lot of the defendants, and i think that's been generally a lot easier of a charge for jurors to decide. remember, in that first oath keepers trial that we saw back in the fall, it was only, i think, two out of the defendants who were ultimately found guilty of seditious conspiracy. that would be kelly megs and stewart rhodes, so the jury wasn't able to reach a conclusion on that charge of seditious conspiracy. all the defendants were found guilty in some capacity and, you know, a lot of them had

having their charge discussed. the two individuals convicted didn't go inside the building, but they were outside. that's sort of the layup case you can get against anyone. if you wanted to charge thousands of people with that, you could charge that against them. all of them are universally guilty of it. ultimately, we might not end up with the more serious charge against those two defendants, including michael greene, who testified on behalf of stewart rhodes during the first oath keepers trial. >> jeh johnson, we touched on this earlier, but juries are returning convictions around the attack on the capitol on january 6th. rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy. very serious charges. >> yes. there is something to be said for investigating and possibly

this is the third oath keepers trial we have seen. this particular trial did not involve the same serious charges as previously of seditious conspiracy but it was nonetheless, one of these oath keeper trials. it's one that a lot of viewers might not necessarily have heard of. the big attraction i would say probably at the federal courthouse right now is the trial of the proud boys which has been dragging on for a very long time, and that sort of has that new flare to it. we have seen this is the third oath keeper trial. these cases are continuing to churn every day. we're continuing to see new sentences every day. there's another bench trial happening involving a defendant who was dressed up as george washington, for example, this week, and there's sentences coming up this week including against a neo-nazi riley williams, who's going to be sentenced on thursday, and was charged in connection with the theft of nancy pelosi's laptop.

meta preside over what is now the third oath keepers trial, and i watched my former colleague prosecutor catherine racozi give her opening statement in that case. elsewhere in the courthouse, we had another insurrectionist, this guy kevin seyfried, who is shown in the picture carrying that enormous confederate flag through the halls of congress, today, he was sentenced to three years in prison, not to be confused with his son, his 24-year-old son, who is serving two years in prison for his conduct on the day of the insurrection. the insurrection was a father/son affair for the seyfried family. you have all of these boots of the insurrection that are being indicted, tried, convicted, and imprisoned, while donald trump has been given, by the department of justice, more than two years to plot his next move. and his next move includes among other things, running for the presidency again.

planners. you'll remember that roads never even entered the capitol. he wasn't even on the grounds of the capitol that day. but, nevertheless, took the conviction for seditious conspiracy. this jury, of, course saw it somewhat differently and did not have a problem convicting these defendants of convicted suspicious -- even though they were lower level folks, the muscle, the guys who, according to prosecutors applied brute force to the plans of trying to stop the certification in the election. it's just that every jury is a little bit different, the perspectives, the way that the way the evidence, the way they apply it. the laws are always a little bit different. and i think that in the second trial, the one that we had a verdict on today, it's possible that the government kind of retooled their presentation of that evidence having had the experience of the first oath keepers trial of few months ago. so, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what it was. but, clearly, these two juries saw the implications of that
