Andrea Romeo • Distributor, I Wonder Pictures - Industry Report: Distribution, Exhibition and Streaming

On a more personal note, what brought you to work in film publishing?
I started my career as a young film critic at the age of 17. Next, I began working as a festival director – I've founded several and I've been heading one for 15 years, namely Bologna's Biografilm Festival – International Celebration of Lives. Meanwhile, I had opened a firm providing film distribution-related services called The Culture Business. I collaborated with DreamWorks, Warner, Universal and many other distributors, especially to provide services of media promotion and third-party promotion. In 2013 that market started shrinking. Following the spread of digital releases, distribution became somehow simpler, but also much cheaper. Thus, I decided to sell the branch providing distribution-related services, Fanatic About Films, to one of my competitors, Milan's Echogroup. Then I started working with I Wonder Pictures on sourcing documentaries for the festival [Biografilm] that Italian distributors wouldn't pick up and were therefore difficult to screen or premiere here. Later on, I met Joshua Oppenheimer at Telluride and was very impressed about his feature

FNE Market Analysis 2020: BULGARIA - FilmNewEurope.com

Yana Marinova and Luiza Grigorova-Makariev in Wildlings by Martin Makariev
SOFIA: Critical for culture and film worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was equally difficult for the film industry in Bulgaria.
The first severe restrictions of social and cultural life came after the vote of the Bulgarian Parliament in favour of a state of emergency from 13 March 2020, imposing a lockdown for a month. All culture and entertainment venues including cinemas were obliged to close.
As a result, only days after the official announcement of its 2020 lineup, the Sofia FF had to postpone its 24th edition, which was about to kick off on 12 March 2020 and to be followed by the 17th Sofia Meetings.

Oscars: How The International Film Landscape Is Shaping Up In A Difficult Year

Oscars: How The International Film Landscape Is Shaping Up In A Difficult Year
Deadline
1/14/2021
In what has been the strangest year on recent record for myriad reasons, the International Feature Film Oscar race is not immune to the impact of Covid. Along with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweaking submission deadlines, many films vying for recognition in the International Feature category have experienced a lack of physical festival exposure and the customary resultant buzz, as so many events were canceled or moved online throughout the past nine months. In several cases, films selected by their respective countries actually debuted way back in the 2019 festival season.

Oscars: Weighing the Odds in the Documentary and International Feature Categories

The Father
While this Bulgarian submission from filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov stands at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it probably will not be helped by sharing a title with one of this year's top-contending English-language films, which stars Anthony Hopkins.
Listen
Ana Rocha De Sousa's film was Portugal's original Oscar submission, but only 10 of its 77 minutes were in a language other than English, so it was rejected. Portugal was, however, allowed to submit a replacement title, and Pedro Costa's
Vitalina Varela is now being evaluated for eligibility.

Maria Bakalova landed the role of a lifetime when she was just a young, aspiring actress in Bulgaria. And it wasn't for "Borat 2."
She was cast in Bulgaria's Oscar submission "The Father" in a tiny but important role, and in speaking with TheWrap, Bakalova described her casting as something of a dream come true.
"They are actually my real teachers, so to work with them was my biggest dream to be part of their movies," Bakalova told TheWrap's Steve Pond of "The Father" directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov. "I was praying one day to be part of something that they were going to make…When I heard back from them that I could be part of it, I was like 'Jesus Christ this is the best day of my life!'"
