RALEIGH, N.C. — Tom Dundon is now sole owner of the Carolina Hurricanes after buying out the remaining shares of the NHL club held by Peter Karmanos and others.
The league’s board of governors unanimously approved the transaction Wednesday.
“We are fortunate to have a passionate fan base that supports what we believe is a team that can compete every year for the Stanley Cup.” Dundon said in a statement. “That is the only option.”

Now sole owner of franchise, Tom Dundon determined to see his Carolina Hurricanes 'compete every year for the Stanley Cup'
The league's board of governors unanimously approved the transaction Wednesday.
"We are fortunate to have a passionate fan base that supports what we believe is a team that can compete every year for the Stanley Cup," Dundon said. "That is the only option."
Dundon, 49, became majority owner in early 2018 when he bought 52% of the Hurricanes and their arena for $425 million. Karmanos had owned the team since moving the Whalers from Hartford, Connecticut, in 1997.
"Pete has had a tremendous impact on the sport of hockey in the United States since the 1970s," Dundon said. "His vision laid the groundwork for the success we now enjoy in Raleigh, and his legacy will always remain a part of this organization."

As reported earlier on Wednesday by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Buffalo Sabres announced the hiring of Jason Karmanos as assistant general manager.

The team says Karmanos will serve as the general manager of the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans, as well as oversee the player development, scouting and analytics departments.

On his final day in office, President Donald Trump pardoned 74 people and commuted the sentences of 70 others. Among those to whom Trump granted clemency was Kwame Kilpatrick, the former mayor of Detroit. Kilpatrick was serving the eighth year of a 28-year prison sentence—the longest for a convicted public official in US history—for two dozen crimes he committed while in office from 2002 to 2008.
Less than 24-hours after Trump commuted his sentence, Kilpatrick walked out of the Federal Corrections Institution in Oakdale, Louisiana.
