Over the last year, digital has transformed the caregiver experience, but pharma has also been undergoing a metamorphosis in order to reach patients.
During the pandemic, life science companies were pushed to reconfigure their care in order to meet the needs of some of the most at-risk patients.
MobiHealthNews sat down with the leader of pharma giant Otsuka's Global Clinical Development on Nephrology, Dr. Charlotte Jones-Burton, to talk about innovating for rare disease, digital in clinical trials and lessons learned from past tech partnerships.
One of Otsuka's treatment areas focuses on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), a genetic disease that requires substantial monitoring. There have always been challenges for patients living with this disease, which have been exacerbated during the pandemic.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical is launching a virtual study to see if digital therapeutics can reduce depression symptoms.
It’s the next step in a partnership between the Tokyo-based drugmaker and Click Therapeutics, a digital health startup that is developing programs for smoking cessation, depression and insomnia.
They plan to enroll up to 540 patients in a randomized, controlled trial that will test the digital therapeutic’s efficacy in patients that are taking antidepressants. The remote trial will be conducted using Verily’s Project Baseline platform.

Fierce Pharma Asia—Daiichi Sankyo's new R&D head; Clover's $230M raise; Insilico's AI breakthrough

Daiichi Sankyo, Clover Biopharmaceuticals and Insilico Medicine made our news this week. (Google)
Amid a big cancer push, Daiichi Sankyo lured Kite Pharma exec Ken Takeshita to lead its R&D work. China's Clover Biopharmaceuticals secured $230 million in an oversubscribed series C to help advance its COVID-19 vaccine program and expand manufacturing capabilities. In several firsts for artificial-intelligence-based drug discovery, Insilico Medicine discovered a novel target for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, designed a new molecule and validated it in preclinical models in 18 months. And more.
Daiichi Sankyo, on its way to becoming a major cancer player, has poached Ken Takeshita, M.D., from Gilead Sciences’ cell therapy unit Kite Pharma to be its new global head of development and interim head of research, effective April 1. He takes over from Junichi Koga, Ph.D., who will retire after 12 years. The Japanese pharma has said it intends to develop seven new molecular entities from 2018 to 2025, with antibody-drug conjugates such as Enhertu the most prominent.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Click Therapeutics have announced the launch of a new, fully remote clinical trial being conducted on Verily's Project Baseline platform.

Christoph Koenen, EVP and chief medical officer of Ostuka Pharmaceutical Companies U.S.,
told MobiHealthNews that the pivotal, randomized, controlled trial will enroll as many as 540 patients across the country over 10 weeks of active participation. This cutting-edge cloud-computing service is helping researchers track COVID's spread

The platform's creation, says Anthony Philippakis, chief data officer at the Broad Institute, was driven by two trends within the wider biomedical space: an explosion in the volume and types of data available – from genomics data to medical imaging and electronic health records – alongside a greater need for data sharing within biomedical science.

"No one organisation, whether it be a medical centre, or a university, or a company, has enough data in order to go after profound questions like the genetic basis of the disease," he says.
"For a long time, although we've embraced the idea of data sharing, especially in genomics, and in many other fields, the way we've operationalized, it is a bit silly – which is to say that, in order to share data, we have to copy it: we put copies on servers and tell researchers to download it to their local environment," he explains.

Verily joins with Janssen, adding Covid-19 to Project Baseline study

Verily joins with Janssen, adding Covid-19 to Project Baseline study
Verily and Janssen say studying Covid-19 immune responses could yield data that helps clinicians treat the disease. They add that the research could also apply to other illnesses caused by respiratory pathogens.

When Verily unveiled $700 million in funding late last year, it said the cash would support its Covid-19 research. Some of those research plans are now taking shape.
Verily, the life sciences division of Google parent company Alphabet, is adding Covid-19 to Project Baseline, an expansive study collecting health data from thousands of patient volunteers and following them over time to create a comprehensive map of human health. The patient information contributes to a database that could offer insight into the biological drivers of health and illness.
