Statehouse monument will honor crusaders for women's suffrage in Indiana

The General Assembly has decreed a monument recognizing the decades of efforts to secure the right to vote for women be placed on the Indiana Statehouse grounds.
The Indiana House voted 97-0 Tuesday to send Senate Enrolled Act 6 to Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb, who is expected to sign it into law. It previously passed the Senate, 47-0.
The Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission created the monument as part of its 2020 celebrations of the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote throughout the nation.
Holcomb’s Department of Administration, however, declined to place the monument at the Statehouse absent General Assembly approval.

Haaland confirmed in historic vote, setting stage for tackling issues including BLM HQ

The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination Monday of Deb Haaland to become Interior secretary and the first Native American Cabinet secretary in history. Attention will now turn to what kind of history she makes on everything from the future of oil and gas development on federal lands to the status of the Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Grand Junction.
The Senate voted 51-40 to confirm the nomination of Haaland, a New Mexico Democrat who has been serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. She faced considerable opposition from Republicans.
U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, both Colorado Democrats, voted for her confirmation in preliminary votes, although neither could cast a final vote Monday because the weekend’s snowstorm delayed their flights back to Washington, D.C., from Colorado.

Why the Andrew Cuomo case is driving Republicans crazy

Things are looking worse by the hour for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Recently, a fourth, and then a fifth, woman came forward to accuse him of inappropriate behavior. At that point, Cuomo’s support among top Democrats in New York began to crumble — apparently some were OK with three accusers, but not with four or five.
First, the leader of the New York State Senate, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, demanded the governor’s resignation. “We need to govern without daily distraction,” Stewart-Cousins said. “Gov. Cuomo must resign.” Then the leader of the State Assembly, Carl Heastie, suggested Cuomo should quit when he said the governor should “seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York.”

How area members of Congress voted last week

WASHINGTON — Here's a look at how area members of Congress voted over the previous week.
House vote
UNIONIZATION: The House has passed the Protecting the Right to Organize Act (H.R. 842), sponsored by Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va. The bill would change laws governing labor practices and unions, with the general goal of making it easier for workers to form unions. Scott said the changes were needed because existing labor law "lacks the teeth to enforce workers' rights when employers unlawfully retaliate against them for organizing." A bill opponent, Rep. Fred Keller, R-Pa., said that by needlessly inserting government into the workplace, it "would infringe on workers' rights and handcuff employers, making it harder for people to make decisions that positively impact their workforce." The vote, on March 9, was 225 yeas to 206 nays.

Crow: Learning more about John the Baptist

A reader asked, “Why was John the Baptist called a voice in the wilderness?”
John was a voice in the wilderness of sin. He was devoted to his mission to serve God and lived an austere life. Before addressing John’s mission and his relationship with Jesus, two Old Testament passages need to be read. Isaiah, the prophet, wrote in 40:3,5, “A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together.’” Malachi, the last book in the Old Testament, spoke about the future in 4:2-6, “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty. “Remember the law of Moses. I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.” During the 400 years between the Old and New Testament, prophetic voices were silenced.
