ROCKFORD — The fifth annual Women’s March Rockford on Saturday was unlike any of the previous four events. Safety concerns related to COVID-19 prompted the organization to cancel the traditional march through the streets of downtown in favor of an outdoor open house at the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Sculpture along the Sinnissippi Recreation Path. Women and their supporters were asked to write down their intentions or goals for women during 2021 and beyond. The messages were displayed on a wooden placard for all to see. “Some of the messages are signs from previous marches that still ring true,” Women’s March Rockford organizer Mary McNamara Bernsten said. “Other messages are current intentions that people are writing down for themselves and for women in general to carry them out this year. It’s a way for people to express themselves in that traditional protest march sign-carrying and we just kind of shifted it this year so that we can commemorate this moment.”

Organizer Mel Champion said women and those who support women are invited to attend the goal-setting event. Examples of goals include: running for office
