Is Santa Cruz trying to kill us? | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History

"Happy Earth Day. It's time to honor our Mother Earth," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. "When we get it right, the Earth sustains us, but when we get it wrong, the consequences can be catastrophic. Santa Cruz is an easy place to live, but not always an easy place to live with."

"The first Santa Cruz city landmarks list was compiled in 1950 by the Chamber of Commerce, citing 20 buildings that had promotional appeal in drawing tourists to Santa Cruz County," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. The fun and follies of an April Fool | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History

"President Teddy Roosevelt visited Santa Cruz in 1903, so the town was dressed up to disguise some of the eye sores detracting from its beauty, such as barn-like bath houses and unattractive utilitarian-looking stores," writes Local History columnist Ross Eric Gibson. "As a result, Fred Swanton began the 'New Santa Cruz Movement' to finance festivals, public events and picturesque buildings like his Neptune Casino, to improve the promotional appeal of Santa Cruz."

'Santa Cruz Cool' and the wild-water warriors | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History – Santa Cruz Sentinel

"In the 1930s and 1940s, local surfers had trouble staying in the ocean for more than a half-hour, due to the frigid Alaskan Current turning their skin blue and rubbery," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. "They resorted to second-hand sweaters, sometimes treated with oil (a nerdy look for surfers), but they preferred 1890s wool bathing suits, which were 15¢ each at Goodwill. Then in 1959, Jack O'Neill opened his Cowell Beach surf shop where Dream Inn now stands."

"Her parents, Poppy and Hopie Potter, decided to join her, driving from Maryland to Santa Cruz in a 1949 Chevy, calling themselves the new '49ers. Is Del Mar Theater a landmark or not? | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History

"When I felt the earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, I saw on the horizon a great cloud of smoke rising from downtown Santa Cruz," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. "Yet it wasn't fire, but dust from crumbling masonry buildings. Much of the downtown lay in ruins, and hasty demolitions were made of some of our best landmarks. The Del Mar was closed, and based on its poor maintenance, and statements from United Artists that the building was obsolete, it was feared to be next for demolition."

"The Pacific Garden Mall opened in 1969 as a National Trust Downtown Historic District, with umbrella protections for its landmarks," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. Birth of the movie palace era | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History

"In 1916, Santa Cruz was worried about the proliferation of nickelodeons in the downtown," writes columnist Ross Eric Gibson. "Nitrate film stock tended to ignite, so nickelodeons needed a metal-lined projector room and fire suppression tools, to prevent burning the cinema or the town."
