immigration number two, we ll talk about that in a second. presumably think democracy is 16%, but still the issues about ukraine and the israel-hamas war ranking lower down sudden when you cover the white house for the associated press, how does the biden campaign believed that these issues, foreign policy issues, may have an impact or do they not think you ll have much of an impact come november well, there s a lot contained within that foreign policy category. obviously, we know that one of their biggest weaknesses is the biden administration s handling of the war in gaza, which has really dissolute progressive disillusioned progressives and young voters when the, on the issue of democracy, which you can also put into this foreign policy category, as we have seen over the last several days with president biden and france, they believe that is a really fundamental issue that unites not only their coalition, but kit gets those independent voters, those so-called nikki haley voters that we have seen persistently turnout in these primaries. they believe that that is something that could attract them to their sayyed. and that s why you saw that s one of the reasons why you saw biden speaks so forcefully in these issues over the last several days, he never really said the words donald trump, but you see the political subtexts. you can t help but see that contrast that president biden and his aides are trying to implicitly make against you know, someone like donald trump who disparages the nato alliance, who has said, who has given the green light to putin to do whatever he wants and biden says that is not the way and you really invokes the memory of d-day invokes the the honor of these army rangers to say what would they ask us? to do? we they would ask us to. one quote was vanquish hateful ideologies and you can t help but think that president biden was thinking about donald trump at that moment and look, but you talked about trump versus biden on some of these issues, isn t voters view them according to recent quinnipiac paul preserving democracy as joe biden i ll play a lot seven points, but he is losing. he s underwater. and what the israel-hamas more in russia ukraine, war, morrow i mean, what do you explain that? because trump is barely talked about what is policy is on the israel-hamas war or on ukraine for oh, he s been pretty clear on ukraine. he was impeached the first time because he held up military aid to ukraine. but about how to end this war. yeah, you know, except for that he d ended on day one. what this one was the president. but what s interesting about that, the bad numbers on gaza are about internal democratic divisions that young people and progressives are angry with biden about that. i think that as if biden can succeed in conflating foreign policy in the threat-to-democracy, which is pretty high up on those list of concerns foreign policies way down. but democracy is way up. if you can conflate them, i think that can help them. and what really struck me about the president and europe the things he said could have been said by any president. in other words, of course, we re going to defend democracy and our allies. but because he s running again, someone on a pretty openly authoritarian platform who said nice things about putin disparaged nato allies said, we don t really deserve belong in ukraine. it s not our fight. that s what made this contrast. so explicit want to turn to what you have is what you, some breaking news here about a major issue that president is going to confront and dealing with immigration. right now, if you look at this is isaac story from this morning, biden nears huge next move on. immigrations. you tries to win over latinos in key states this past week, he moved forward in an executive action that angered a lot of folks on the left to try to clamp down on migrant crossings at the southern border. this time a shift. what is it? what are reporting is that the president is very close to moving forward on what would be the next round of executive actions. it would be to make work possible legally for long term undocumented immigrants who are married to americans it sounds like a small group. it s actually about 800,000 people, predominantly latino, when you think about the effect that this haves, it s not just on those people themselves, it s of course, on their spouses under kidd on their whole networks around them, that really makes a reverberating effect through millions of people. by the way, many of those people concentrated in arizona, nevada, georgia, places of the president has been behind a specialty with latinos. there s a political benefit here, but to folks who are been involved with this, this looks a lot to them like daqqa to 0.0 this time, 2012, it was june 15, 2012, barak obama created the daca program for people who had been brought here as children, unknowingly to, so that they could be legal status that to a lot of people was one of the turning point moments for obama s reelection campaign. there is a deep desire to replicate that both in terms of the policy effect here and in terms of the political effect. yeah the political factors. one thing we ll look at it right now. obviously, both polls showed that biden is struggling with on the issue of immigration is what it is major vulnerabilities, but had a biden s bars versus trump s supporters look at the idea of undocumented immigrants and whether they should be able to stay in the us legally if certain requirements are met, the recent pupils that 85% of biden supporters would are supportive of that. but just 32% of trump s supporters such a divide here, but it s clearly he s moving. you could say, to the left to try to placate those concerns is hearing one, how he s been heroin and certainly i think it reflects the kind of cross pressures he s feeling. when the number of issues not only immigration before in policy, this is a president who s tried to be everything to everyone in a lot of points. and with on both the border. and i think in foreign policy you ve seen the difference the gold teeth on that. i think that biden. okay. man, obviously with this is a strip that has flipped to a political liability and i think it s because democrats have not had an affirmative position on a lot of these issues. they have been able to criticize donald trump and republican actions, but there has not been a unified view from both top of the party to the base. well, what to do about immigration? and once you do a look abroad, but i think it s important that we don t see these issues as completely separate. when people talk about the economy too often bring up the fact that we re, that we re giving a lot of money into ukraine in israel when people talk about foreign policy, they ll bring up preserving democracy. these things are working together and also biden s perception, even things like age, the perception of him is not in the driver s seat of kind of events, but reacting to advance, it s something that happens on the foreign policy states that is contributing to his perception of unpopularity domestically. so these things are all kind of all working together to create a really difficult picture for this president. but i think what we re seeing now is the is the white house trying to take a more active role in shaping ahead of this debate so that by the time donald trump makes these arguments, he can point to very specific things that he has done recently specifically on the issue he has someone isaac mentioned about the impact that leads me like dog got the biden team looks kinda views this as darker. 22 of you covered this very closely at that time biden has struggled since then, with hispanic voters. this is having any impact. do you think with that key demographic or is this something similar in any way to what obama did more than a decade ago? well, i was i was talking with some some people who work in this space and there s so much anger after the border executive action that the president role that this week, that there s some thought that they might not even want to praise whatever affirmative action that the administration roles that that would help these undocumented immigrants. but i think another thing to remember too, is that president obama in 2014 rolled out something similar on executive action that was actually blocked by the supreme court. and it was never implemented. and now i m sure biden s team i m sure biden s lawyers are trying to make sure to craft this proposal in a way that they feel could withstand scrutiny. but first of all, the supreme court is a lot more conservative now than it was in 24 14. and he s already going to he could do these things either on the border or on that. it could get blocked by the courts. and then what does that do? then what does that do? those people who he s trying to thwart such a good point, but i m in the wider world as a sort of strange approach. given that they would like you to brace as you may get more part of your message their goal here is to beat donald trump and part of that would be from making him more disqualified in the eyes of voters, harris went right out that and by the way, she went right at it at a democratic party in michigan democratic party event rather, and michigan that is where i think we should expect to see her much more over the course of the next six reminds me of her presidential campaign, you know, justices on the ballot. common harris prosecuting the case against donald trump. these were all kind of ethos is that were part of the original premise of her as a politician. i think that is going to be the rozi place to isaac s point, to be two, to actually be able to make the case in a more direct way than joe biden. well, but at the same time, we haven t seen real returns from this and especially because on the public side, that conviction has not registered as a huge shift. we were following the news there are times polling about what actually moved people after the conviction. and you saw two points moving away from from trump to biden, but some of that was drop-off, just the interest in third-party, some of that. but the landscape is really messy around this conviction, but it s not telling the sea change and last year when we were talking to democrats about the premise of biden s campaign part of it was a belief that the legal problems will make donald trump inherently uncollectible. we have not seen that come to fruition and so what the harris is doing, i think it s to try to make that true in a way that democrats have not been able to kind of make that reality such so far, but their belief that they would inevitably happen has not come to pass. and we re going to dive a little deeper. about the impacts are not at bag will have on the numbers in the next segments. thanks for that good there was going to board a cub meanwhile, we ve heard to trump and just talk about retribution and what does that exit mean? who really knows, but this is what he s talking about. this is his messaging in the aftermath of his precedent for our country. does that mean the next president does it to them? that s really the question. when this election is over, based on what they ve done, i would have every right to go after them i mean, sure. he s rallied the base in the aftermath of the conviction, but is at risk of going too far. there might be the thing that struck me about donald trump s campaign is how much it s been base oriented, how much he doesn t seem to care about those independence or nikki haley voters he s just really been ever since the beginning of the political yeah, this is his theory of the case. it s like a cable news business model. you don t have to a bigger audience, they just have to watch him 24/7 how much money you raised so that but but i think that the republican party has fallen in line. i mean, some of his supporters are calling for jailing alvin bragg, something for supporters are calling for executing the alvin bragg, but and to a person, there behind him, will it have a risk? certainly we haven t seen that in the polls so far, but this is a race that s going to be won or lost on the market a tiny little shift of voters could make a big difference in battleground states speaking up, falling in line yes, i spoke to i spoke to a number of the sum of those vulnerable republicans in the house. so people will represent districts that joe biden won some districts even by double-digits. and i asked them, you have a convicted felon at the top of the ticket. are you still going to support now that trump has been convicted, are you planning on supporting him in november versus joe biden yes. yeah i already he voted for him in the primary november the way this is about the american people. i have no issues in supporting donald trump for president the united states. he s the republican nominee on the republican yeah. a lot of my constituents are i think even more than supportive now because democrats went way too far. having a convicted felon and a district like yours hurt republicans. my district school, a very smart people with firm grasp reality. they can smell give a comment that last one was caused the tom king junior who did not respond. the other ones indicated they did look at another political universe you have a candidate who has some baggage. you re vulnerable member, you run away from, you don t want anything to do with them. this is the trump era when republicans are fine, he s a convicted felon. they ll side with his messaging when i was watching that, i was reminded a lot of the dynamics that we saw after the access hollywood tape in 2016 when we did see some on endorsements, but most of the party rally behind him because they know they re the republican lawmakers you talked to. they ve either accepted or maybe are residing to the fact that president trump is their party s nominee. and they know they cannot lose their base of supporters if they want to win they do need to attract the independent voters, which is why they say things like, well, we re supportive of trump, that we don t like the verdict and all that, but let s talk about the economy let s talk about immigration. that s how they tried to broaden their own coalition of voters. and i was just blast for the past manu, but remember when joe heck in 2016 shamelessly on endorse trump on live tv after access hollywood, i remember strategists at the time saying that s kind of where his campaign started going downhill because you really need to cole are really bring together, consolidate your own based first. yeah, good, good reference and then 2012, there s also but it was also the dynamic here is that there are republicans in the swing districts who are fine with endorsing trump than the love vulnerable democrats, vulnerable senate democrats in these purple-ish, even red states. and whether they are going to talk about the trump guilty verdict do you think that i will come back to trump verdict? was did they get this correct? the trump verdict, the jury in new york the jury decision, and they that s their that s their decision. and we ll see with an acceptance, did the jury get it right in new york? sayyed put out a statement. i ve said what i ve said. do you support that meantime, there are republican opponents have come and gone after them with ads. tim sheehy and montana put out an ad saying that jon tester, who s running against them standing on the attacking him for the verdict and sherrod brown is a bone-in tagging him over the verdict in these members don t want to talk about was that tell you well, look, i mean, that s montana now it s the very republican state and job bob casey s from pennsylvania. i think that that s trays and look, i think that this is the tension they re facing. look, i had a story a couple of days ago that was also a bad the biden campaign s outreach beginning to republicans and i think it is definitely the case that republican leaders, current republican leaders please do not want to have any sunlight between them and donald trump, but among a lot of former republican leaders, there is now some connections going on to the biden campaign. and the question that a lot of them raised to me is how many republicans looking voters are there out there who maybe don t want to say it publicly. but who once they go into the voting booth, pulled the curtain tight, we ll actually not vote for donald trump or even vote for joe biden. maybe skip it or vote. that is a huge question. for the rest of the campaign. all right, up next, our first hint is at how trump s whether it s having any impact at all on voters while new polling shows there are some small size of shifts. broadly speaking, it has not made much of a dent in trump s standing, at least not yet. new poll from fox news shows the former president still ahead several key states, except notably in virginia, where the poll shows the race is tied. and of course, president biden won virginia in 2020 by about ten points or panel is back just a little bit deeper than that fox news poll about how independence, what they view, this has an impact in these swing-state, the hush money verdict the guilty verdict their 29% of voters in virginia say it matters up to 44% in florida, then you have the doesn t matter, 68% in virginia, all the way down to 52%, say it doesn t matter now we don t know that that means whether they re going to actually vote or they will vote but it doesn t seem to be. again, not a game changer. look, we always said this was the weakest of all the cases against him. it turns out it s the only one that s probably going to happen before election day and most people say it s not going to change their votes. npr, pbs, marist had a poll, 60 something percent said it won t change their votes, but 17% said they would, and that matters in a battleground state. so it might happen around the edges, but the biden campaign has to figure out how to make it matter. i don t think they re very clear yet on the best way to do that instead, you had actually been speaking to some of these voters throughout the course of these legal cases in your podcasts, you talked to a voter about whether they would switch to biden. this was someone who had said they were going to vote for trump and now will they switch vote for biden now that he s a guilty guilty in this case? so i was thinking along the lines of the january 6. now i m comprising yup. if you went after my mat and you re able to get them on something like that. that might make me change my mind, but this being a big item on i m sorry. it just doesn t sway me. i think it was a crime i am that in another world, if he was another person and nobody would have touched it, would you? this? is an arizona republican voter. cells as mine hasn t changed. yeah, this is part of two groups we spoke to. the first, which includes cart, was people who had set in the october york times paul, that if trump was convicted of a crime, they would change their mind. they would start that they were trump supporters will be open the backing biden was about 7% of people. now, when we call it a lot of those folks back as new york times polling was doing over the last week, almost universally they were having added caveats to that opinion, say, oh, was a different case as kurt said, or maybe if it turned out or maybe the facts were more but they folks weren t really changing because because of this but when we call back to the majority of voters in the general national survey, you did see one to 2% of movement away from by, away from trump toward biden. and so that can to the point about margins make a small difference. but i would caution against saying this doesn t matter at all. donald trump s donald trump s legal problems have been ingested by most people well, and it s part of the reason democrats have done better and things like the midterms as far the reason joe biden has a narrative to tell swing voters in independence, because oftentimes it has come back to hurt donald trump. donald trump is a weak general election candidate, partially because of these things, all of the polling would tell us that republicans will be better served if someone else was at the top of the ticket, how ever because he s going up against another week candidate and joe biden relative to each other. he s still retaining that level of support. so that s what really came through in this poli. and it s not the people did not care about donald trump s baggage, is that it wasn t enough to overcome some of the unpopularity of joe biden. that s what we re seeing. that s a little more deeper rooted. i think some democrats expect, of course, the fact that a lot of these other cases almost certainly will not get reach a verdict november then it shows you that voter may not be swayed. we ll see, but i do want to turn to the other big criminal case. so hunter biden case, the president s son, there could be verdict this week. in fact, the instill question about whether hunter biden will testify. it seems unlikely he will in his own defense in this criminal case what s been we ll see what the fallout is depending on what the verdict ultimately is, what s been notable is there s been a shift a bit in trump s own messaging about this from 2022. now hunter, you got thrown out of the military. he was thrown out dishonorably discharged. that s not true. was it two years. and he didn t have a job until you became vice president. i feel very badly for them in terms of the addiction part of what they have, right now, because i understand the addiction world and i ve also not only a brother, i ve lost a lot of friends to addiction so suddenly he s changed his tune and hunter biden well, like many people saw that moment when the debate that followed that in 2020, when joe biden spoke very personally in viscerally about his son facing addiction and families of the face as one of joe biden s best moments in the campaign. donald trump seems to be responding to that. i think the other thing here is that this case is it s really complicated what happened with hunter biden here. it s not about drug use, it s about the gun charges related to drug use and trump s supporters are trump aides have said that they feel like this is not the kind of thing that they would like to be prosecuting the case on hunter on it doesn t get to the business dealings, it doesn t get to joe biden enriching himself. look, if you re going to get into complicated family dynamics with a lot of children the trump family has some you don t but speaking obviously says personal issue and the president, but politically zero concern in the biden camp about what a guilty verdict may mean for the president november they think that people will view these things separately. well, i think they re trying to make sure that these legal his legal hunters legal cases don t get conflated with what the present for the former president has been convicted of. and they are so different, obviously not only different facts, but hunter s a private citizen donald trump is the republican nominee. what what he does has a direct bearing on the american people, whereas janiot, you can i really argue that. but i think the democrats are really trying to make sure that in the eyes of the public that those two those two issues are kept separate. i think the concern among democrats is just the impact on president biden himself and he is a father. i this is his son going through very difficult moment and a moment of his life. he s got a lot going on this month. he s got the debate coming up. he s got another foreign trip later this week, and just that just weighing on him, i think that is the concern of mine. and there s another thing. so where do you categorize those types of folks in those and also companies choosing, think about small businesses if wages starting to go up, they re going to have less employees on w2, which means that they re going to probably go contract or roles and so that gets reported differently as well. and then you think about some of these industry trees where you think of that job growth out of that report, it was health care government, leisure and hospitality these are consistent with the trends that are growing where the other sectors or not and then there is this, i guess confusion on the stock market you ve got the magnificent seven. are these big companies outperforming, making record profits? they re hiring obviously remains strong with small to medium enterprises suffering yeah. no, i think it was clear in this report in the last couple of reports that small businesses are struggling. i think when you mentioned that magnificent seven, you have to effort to tor battleground states and recruit black and latino voters for trump and the gop here s the catch though, in the announcement a source told cnn the republican national committee, and the trump campaign are quote aware of the initiative and they plan to be resources where needed. but this was not a directive from the trump campaign. so it seemed like they know he s doing this, but nobody asked him to do this. and those no urgency to help him help them center is god s plan is expected to focus on michigan north carolina, georgia arizona, nevada, and pennsylvania. so let s go to philadelphia this past weekend trump campaign, they actually hosted a black americans for trump up prevent. this one is cognac and cigars because you know how much we love hennessy the philadelphia inquirer points out that the first event was in northeast philadelphia. one of the widest and most conservative parts of philly congressman byron donalds was the main speaker. and for the rest of the week, he had to clean up or explain or defend comments he made that day about black families being together during jim crow let s talk about this muddled messaging with michael harriet. he is a columnist for the grill and author of the black aif history, the and whitewash story of america. michael good to have you. thanks for having me. so let s start here with why is tim scott doing this? and is he the best? i guess ambassador for the gop to get black and latino voters. he s, he s expecting to get them for trump and the gop when he couldn t get them for his own campaign. well, no part of the reason tim scott is doing this is not like you said, trump didn t ask him to do it is part of like he has some leftover campaign money. any wants to be vice friend? so why not use this to by the vice presidency, he s best positioned out of all the candidates, like to be the black vice president. so that s part of it. and the other reason is, i mean, let s be honest, i d like you know, here black people talk about like, let s go to the tim scott party yeah, you don t want to go right out to the tilt kind of it. but tim scott is partially dorna s to kind of make a men s to his own black constituents in his own blackstone, which is also a part what i don t understand because the way tim scott speaks about race in racism in the country now and he says there is no structural racism, there is no institutional racism is not the way he has always spoken about. if this is tim scott in 2016 talking about racism and the scales of justice, watch this so while i thank god, i have not endured bodily harm i have, however, felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted i have felt the anger the frustration, sadness and the humiliation that comes with feeling like you re being targeted for nothing more. then being just yourself that was 2016 and he one on the same ballot is donald trump won reelection in 2022. what happened? there? donald trump happen right so i ve talked to tim scott about this issue about justice in policing. remember, for years tim scott was trying to push through police reform or the water scott notification act four years, but all that would away with donald trump, right? because this current republican party is not really a conservative party, is the party of fealty to one guy. and what one guy dictates is what you have to do or be on the outs with the entire republican base. and so tim scott has set aside all nest of this. he has been fighting for for his own self-preservation. and that is to serve donald trump, the lord and savior. here s what byron donalds said this week about black families and jim crow so one of the things is actually happening in our culture would your now starting to see in our politics is the re, in the region invigoration of black families with younger black men and black women that is also hoping so breed the revised hi have a black middle class in america. you see during jim crow going to go back to orange and grow back family wants together during more black people were not just conservative, but you always have 50 serving of my are more black people holy conservative leak and then hew, lyndon johnson. and you go down that road. and now we are where we are now he could. have made that point without invoking jim crow. why the frame work of american apartheid around families and families staying together? well, first of all, yeah, like you said, like, i don t even know why he spent the rest of the week defending stuff that he brought up. but i think that he was dog listening to a particular part of his base, white, not the black men, but there is a segment of black men who wish that they could return to the days when women didn t have all the rights that s one of the parts of that that we don t talk about that he s kind of dog whistling to like after the civil rights act women also got rights and that is why marriage rates in every race decline because they could have bank accounts, they could get jobs. and that s one of the things that he was dog whistling too. but the other thing is that he was dog whistling two part of his constituency because at those events, mostly white and at those events like those constituents who are gathered their they also are what to return to that jim crow time. that s the place that they want a return. that s what they re talking about, what they say make america great again. and that was also or not those people michael harriet. thank you for having us understand this outreach to black and latino voters. thanks so much for being with us. $130 billion. that s a lot of money according to the fearless fund. that s venture capital funding raised by us companies in 2018 the firm says that when they found out that only 2% of that financing with the companies founded by women. and less than 1% went to company started by women of color. it became their mission to close that gap with a grant program for black women entrepreneurs but their work is now on hold after a new federal well appeals court ruling fearless fund was soon on behalf of a group called the american alliance for equal rights. and they argue the program violates the law. and they say programs that excludes certain individuals because of their race, such as the ones that feel this fund has designed and implemented are unjust and polarizing. now, the aer is led by edward blum. now he s not a household name, but i m sure, you know, the fruits of his work recently he s the legal strategist who supreme court case dismantled affirmative action in college admissions. a blom is not trying to hide his continuing crew say this headline conservative activist who took down affirmative action is now going after law firms, diversity programs is featured on his groups website. his group is also going after a southwest airlines travel award program for hispanic students. the smithsonian institute, a national museum of american latino, in march blum touted as settlement that promised the museum s internship will now be open to all ethnicities but not just blum. it s taken up this cost since the affirmative action ruling conservative groups like here s have targeted a range of programs from those studying reparations to a program meant to help pregnant women of color now with that context, let s bring it now. ariane simone, she s the ceo and founding partner of fearless fund. thank you for being with me this morning. let me start here with i think is probably a pedestrian question, but i want to let you run a little bit with it. why socially, why culturally are these efforts successful, and why the fearless fund? i can t exactly tell you why the fearless fund, but what i can share is the impact that we have had prior to the fearless fund being in existence. black women had an average fund raise of $30,000 when the fearless fund was bounded, it came on the scene. we were cutting seven figure checks to black and brown women. our thesis is that a woman of color co-founder must be on the founding team and that is the impact that we have had. we ve raised somewhere over 60 million. we ve deployed investments at our investment vehicle and at our foundation, we have deployed grants as well as health education programs. i can t exactly say why we were targeted, but we this is the impact that we have and maybe some view it as a threat so among your list of investors, bank of america, jpmorgan, chase, mastercard, ally paypal does this ruling jeopardize that support that you then pass on to the women you award these grants well, there s two things going on. there s our foundation that s where grant programs are held. and there is our fund which is our investment vehicle, since the lawsuit, i can say that we have not had a closing on the funds sayyed, where we raise capital in order to invest in women of color since the lawsuit, we have had some corporate partners step up on the foundation sayyed, can continue those programs, but on the front side, we have not had a closing since the litigation has taken place. so there was a study from goldman sachs in 2020 that black business owners say that they were denied bank funding at a rate three times that of what we heard from are they heard from white business owners? what does this ruling practically mean for black women invest entrepreneurs and maybe other organizations that like yours target investment in this community that is at the front of the line when it comes to starting new businesses in this country it is very concerning. we only exist due to the racial disparities that exist as you stated, just recently, that there have been many times where people of color and black women and black people have been denied funding and financing there is no reason why black women are the most founded entrepreneur demographic, while receiving the least of the funding that takes place. there s no reason for that at all. these programs are at stake and they re at stake because this is a precedent case. this being used as a benchmark way to establish case law for what is either violating the law or accepted by the law. so yes, this is definitely very concerning and i hope everybody is taking note on simone ceo and co-founder of the fearless fund. thank you so much for your time this morning. the pardon of a man who murdered a black lives matter protester, daniel perry, was released from prison last month after the pardon from governor greg abbott. now, a jury convicted it. did perry of murdering garrett foster at a black lives matter rally in 2020 foster was the fiance of whitney mitchell and whitney is a quadruple amputee and said, foster had been her sole caretaker for more than a decade she was at the press conference this week with garrett foster mother, sheila foster, where this challenge to the pardon was announced. now, here s how daniel perry s attorney is responding kalisa garcia is making a mockery of the laws of texas and the state constitution which give governor abbott this power well, travis county district attorney jose garza is with us now alongside sheila foster, garrett foster s mother thank you both for being with me. and let me start here with you, da garza, texas constitution, our region just a section of it. the governor shall have power on the written sine recommendation and advice of the board of pardons and paroles the majority thereof to grant reprise commutation of punishments and pardons. why is perry s attorney wrong? the governor s power to issue a pardon is not on limited and that s because the governor is not a king. he s not a monarch. keats still has to operate inside of our democracy and inside our democracy, there are rules that are laws that govern how pardons can be issued and what steps need to be taken before a pardon can be issued. in this instance. those laws were clearly violated. but texas also has defense council would read a little further in the constitution. he would also see that the texas this constitution has one of the strongest separation of powers clauses in the country. and as a result of that, it prohibits the governor from interfering in the role of the judiciary, which is exactly what he s done in this case. this pardon makes a mockery of our justice system. it has inserted politics above the law and above justice, and we intend to continue the fight. them to uphold this conviction or garrett and for his family ms foster, to you, you ve spoken about not just what this pardon means for you, your family, your son, but what this means potentially for other governors, for other offenders, the legal system it sets a precedent. it sends the wrong message it allows people to copycat what he did and how would everybody feel if that had been a trump rally? would he be pardoning this man if that had been a trump rally the garza, you say that this interferes with a judicial system if that is the threshold let me just give you some some room here to explain that. how does it interfere? i mean, the the guy oven or has the power after conviction on advice from the pardon and paroles board that happened here where did he interfere? let s let s talk about this from a couple of different perspectives. first of all this part is wholly unprecedented in many ways. the request for a pardon was issued less than 24 hours after the jury verdict the part in itself was granted after the appellate. i m sorry, before the appellate process even began it is the first time in the history of the state of texas that have governor has pardon someone before the appellate process has run its course. but the other piece of this is that the rules are clear. that in order for a pardon to be granted in the case defendant is asserting actual innocence. that the defendant has to either provide evidence from the district court or provide written letters from from two of the trial officials and in this case, none of that happened because all of this is political. let s remember that the governor old for this, pardon? i m after being bullied by tucker carlson and other right-wing voices on conservative media and so no one should be surprised that they circumvented all of the rules and all of the normal legal process to get to this political outcome. certainly the power of pardon is a strong one, but it is not an unlimited power. and it should be insulated from politics. that s not the case here sheila i having spoken with several parents in your position after losing a child, the conviction of the person who murdered that child is part of the healing not closure. i don t think there s ever closure, but healing how has this period since the pardon been for you i ve been sick ever since the governor announced his plans to pardon. i haven t been able to return to work because i am so sick because of the stress we waited nearly three years for a trial and when we finally got a guilty verdict, i was able to sleep fully for the whole night for the first time since my son s death. and then 18 hours after the jury verdict the governor announced his plans, departed it has wreaked havoc on my health and now that he s done it i don t i don t function normally anymore i m just honestly terrified how is weekend? i know saying yeah, i saw her last week and visited with her and she s she has struggling this is not right. there s nothing about this that is fair. there was nothing wrong done in that trial and they are just using this for political pandering. i should also say the documents show that perry texted in may of 2020 quote, i might go to dallas to shoot looters close. quote, and also shared racist messages, including white power memes, as well. now there are 14 attorney s general who are asking the department of justice to look into this see if there had been federal laws broken sheila foster, district attorney, jose garza. i of those heroes was corporal waverly woodson junior. he was an army medic, part of the 320th barrage balloon battalion that all-black unit landed on omaha beach june 6, 1944 and 80 years after spending hours treating wounded soldiers as he was injured himself. copa woodson was posthumously awarded the distinguished service cross that s the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the army. and on friday, the us army, the first army, honored woodson and his melody associated press took these photos of the ceremony and they described the metal being laid there on the sand and soldiers saluting it. the api described the metal being passed around among the soldiers delicately. and it was explained that we want to be able to say that this metal came from omaha beach and was at the site of woodson s actions corporate woodson son, steven is here also with this is shyam brown. she chronicled the stories of heroes like stevens dad in a new documentary a docuseries, in fact called erased world war 2s, heroes of color welcome to you both. and steven, let me start with you because i understand there was a reporter from the api who described to you over the phone what that ceremony was and what they did and as you heard it, what do you feel i was overwhelmed with emotion. victor, it was extremely well-done i actually did get to see portions of the video and on there s truly unbelievable and honored what does this mean for your family for your 90 mother? what does this honor, now, me it s a tremendous honor to our family. we ve been in pursuit for recognition for not only my dad, but just african american soldiers who participated in d-day invasion is 320th and by receiving this honor, it s just a little bit more of closure of recognition for all african american soldiers have participated in d-day. my dad s heroism was outstanding, but it s true honor, our family and shy. and do we know how many now black service members participated on that day in 1944? so with the free 20th, there were over 1,000 african american troops as a part of that barrage barrage balloon battalion and as well as the free 20th who were the only black combat unit to land on the beaches of d-day. there were also a lot of labor troops and so within our documentary series, we ve looked at combat unit combat units as well as people who would have been serviced troops at the time. so yeah, there s we re still discovering stories and it s just it s been an amazing journey to be a pole. according to the army, more than 1 million you in black people served during world war ii we know why they weren t recognized 80 years ago or even 50, 40 years ago. but why are they so under-recognized today, cheyenne oh, that s a tough question, but i think there s a way of rewriting history and what we mentioned in my film is that there are plenty or history books films, documentaries, which often leave out the black experience in world war two. but what we know is it was world war there were over 8 million people of color who served in world war two. and i think those stories need to be recognized and it s taken so long because i think it s hidden history and i think it s incredibly empowering and brave what these men and women do and had done there. so i think it s, i think it s who writes the history, what historians know, what archivists know. and another thing is a lot of the time to black troops what photograph, and they weren t recorded but in my film, you see black troops on in kettering in middle england. so we managed to discover that footage, but it was really, it s quite difficult to find a large array or photographs and footage steven, i understand that your family is now calling for your father to be honored with the medal of honor yes. matter of fact, we ve been in pursuit for this or with this for a number of years. my mom is really karatay, the torch or a majority of the time and with her being 95 now, she s doing great. but she has asked me to step up in and take her place in pursuit of my dad s recognition. so everything is going along fine senator chris van hollen from the state of maryland has beat is everywhere. how foundational is it to the genre of reggaeton? oh, i mean that basic beat is absolutely foundational to reggaeton. a lot of people would say without that beat, that rhythm, it s not reggae tone. and you can find that beat propelling most reggae tone souls so this judge is now not determined whether the beat pattern is original work are warranted copyright protection you study this, does it first appear in fish market in 1989 or has it been around forever? well, yeah, it s a great question and perhaps a crucial question and one that will start to come out as the trial proceeds and it really depends on how you define it. obviously, steely and clearly or making the argument that they brought this rhythm into shape. and in an original and protectable way back back, then but it really is a question that basic beat that get to get, get to that we hear all the time and reggaeton. and that really define the sound of dancehall reggae in the late 80s and early 90s on the other hand, could be heard as a far, far older and more traditional rhythm these days we call it dembo pointing back to a dental rigueur record by sciubba ranks called dembo but 100 years ago, you would have heard somebody referring to that basic rhythm as the harb and anera because it was so closely linked to havana and in various other moments in time, it s been known as the tango. that s where tango gets its name. it s been known as bamboo law. according to robert farris thompson the great chronicler of afro diasporic culture in his work on tango he notes that back in congo, it was known as a mach-e new the call to dance. and so it s also not wrong for you to respond that way and apparently people have been responding that way to that rhythm for a very long time. one of the more than 100 artists who have been sued is, as i mentioned, bad bunny his album in 2023 was the most streamed album on spotify, 4.5 billion streams. what does this lawsuit mean in this moment of man? i save growth for reggaeton right? yeah, i mean, as you note reggaeton has been a massive growth sector in the music industry in general, bad bunny has been on top of the world more or less for several years. we had the story of days by sito back in 2017, making a record run up the anglo pop charts. so there s a lot of money, there s a lot of money, and reggaeton. and i think that s part of the backdrop here, is that jim making musical style has been a part of the global mainstream for quite awhile. and it has sort of defined the global mainstream through, through reggae tone for the last possibly 20 years, certainly the last decade or so. i think you ve got a lot of jamaican producers and artists looking around and seeing a lot of people who are not jamaican exploiting beats that they think really are from jamaica. and they re wondering what they ve been left out. yeah. and that is certainly the undertone of this now is reclaiming the origin of some of this music as so many around as we await the end of a deadline set by former defense minister benny gantz. what he s threatened department shift from the cabinets could mean for the conflict in gaza. plus the u.s. jobs report is will be on full display in the coming hours as us president joe biden continues his official state visit in paris french president emmanuel macron will welcome mr. biden and the first lady with a relationship with whomever the us president is. it was only a few years ago. it feels like now that he was hosting at that time, president trump, and undoubtedly one can imagine the possibility. i mean, this will be put, i guess in the most diplomatic terms, but the real possibility and president my mind president biden will believe he s going to win the when the upcoming us election. but in president macrons mind the concern that the next us president that he may be greeting in france could be donald trump, if he, if he wins the election. and that s a concern. and i think we heard those concerns overlaid and all the conversation and speeches that president biden has given while he s been in france about the importance of united states not being isolated, the importance of the duty of unity of the nation let s to support ukraine in its fight against president putin s russia which president zelenskyy himself compared to germany under the nazis and adolf hitler. so this is the sort of backdrop to the conversations, but the real meat of the conversations for what they both late to du really those lie in the sphere of peace in the middle east and, and of course how best to support ukraine and in juror that support going forward, whomever wins the us presidency as you say, nick, there are differing opinions between biden and macron despite their close bond. i mean, what impact do you think this trip will have on us foreign policy, particular regarding the wars in ukraine and gaza i think president biden is bounded by a couple of things here. when it comes to sort of how he adjusts his foreign policy for international pressure, even from a strong la lake like frogs. and that is the demands have domestic politics and the way that contains and constraints what he wants to do. we ve seen any apologized for president zelenskyy for taking so long to get that $60 billion aid package for ukraine because it got stuck. he said because of some hardline republicans so his constrained what he can do, macron, of course, we ll want to push biden to get tougher on israel. he supports president biden s latest peace proposal for hostage judge release and a ceasefire in gaza. but he wants biden to do more. and when it comes to ukraine, he wants biden to do more there as well and be more for forward leaning and support. his own initiative, macrons initiative, to have a coalition of international military trainers who would be inside ukraine we don t have this, at least not publicly knowledge at the moment that nato nations have military members inside ukraine supporting and training troops. and that s something match a chrome wants to, wants to do is something president biden is averse to doing because part of the american electorate is very leery about seeing a, you who is entanglement, a military engagement on the ground inside ukraine something president biden said wouldn t happen even if and when russia invaded ukraine. so it s hard to see what wiggle room biden has, but that just president macron isn t going to try to find that space to move things in his direction rather send journeys from london, good to see you. thank you in gaza fire maintained good relations with the americans. in fact, he s gone to washington, dc since the war began on more than one occasion without the actual cool permission of the prime minister for him to leave it means that that sort of counter balance to netanyahu s perhaps more bellicose inclinations is gone. and it means that, that really basically opens up for vacuum into which the likes of which national security minister ben gvir will step in. and he s sort of the extreme of the extremists in the israeli cabinet. so it could definitely spell more political chaos in israel. now, last month, gantz did he say that on the 8th of june it today, he would resign if netanyahu did not. in the meantime, come up with some sort of post war plan for gaza. netanyahu really hasn t done that yet. but fundamentally, even on the post-war plan for gaza, it s not clear what but he has in mind because gantz, like netanyahu is opposed to the creation of a palestinian state. and he is opposed to the palestinian authority taking over gaza after the war as well. but clearly this is going to open up another gap in an all ready chaotic scene. and israeli politics and wait a min, joining us from aggression in ukraine and the ongoing war in ukraine but beyond the questions of whether or not europe can be united in its support for you ukraine. there are questions of european enlargement of the green agenda and also at the heart of what the european union is about whether it s going to be a model for democracy and supporting human rights. you see with the rise of these far-right parties that don t like institutions that are aren t particularly supportive of democracy or human rights it s very anti-immigration. they want to almost dismantle the european union from within. so these are really been questions that are coming with this particular election. disaster there s obviously a lot of talk about what will happen if, if donald trump becomes president again and what that would mean for europe. but let s turn that around if right-wing parties perform well, what could that mean for relations with us? it s a really good question, and i think in terms of if it s still joe biden in 2024 the biden administration has maintained that they are committed to democracy, to human rights into working to ensure that the partnership, the transatlantic partnership is ironclad and that they were working in lockstep in fighting against russian aggression and they ll have to work with whatever partners are there. and you see that biden is in france right now. and though he and macron don t agree on everything, that they are showing a united efforts here that they do mostly agree on on the issue of russian aggression. and in trying to strengthen the european union but with the trump presidency, i think you re going to see quite a bit of disarray and chaos if you look at the far-right, this family group is probably one of the groups that is the least united and trump promotes disarray. whether it d be just this isolationists idea that doesn t really work for institutions, particularly intergovernmental institutions. and also the transatlantic partnership. there needs to be i guess something fighting against that rugged individualism that these far-right parties want to promote. so it would be very hard to predict what s going to happen. but what you ve seen re capturing at what time is it being captured? i also think that gig worker is not being captured in this as well, people choosing not to come come back into the workforce as another thing. so where do you categorize those types of folks in those and also companies choosing, think about small businesses. if wages starting to go up, they re going to have less employees on w2, which means that they re going to probably go contractor roles. and so that gets reported differently as well. and then you think about some of these industries. where do you think of that job growth out of that report? it was health care government, leisure and hospitality. these are consistent with the trends that are growing where the other sectors are not and then there is this, i guess confusion on the stock market you ve got the magnificent seven. are these big companies outperforming, making record profits they re hiring obviously remains strong with small to medium enterprises suffering yeah, no, i think it was clear in this report in the last couple of reports that small businesses are struggling. i think when you mentioned that magnificent seven, you have to call out nvidia all, of, this, the record growth bag had and that s holding the market, i would say. and the word ai for a couple of or amd and others are pulling the market up so that trend goes hot. it brings a market go up. now, mind you (dog bark) it s just smarter, healthier pet food. it s amazing what real food can do. good morning and welcome back to the weekend. we are following two breaking stories. first, president biden is currently in bilateral talks with french president emmanuel macron. continue to visit commemorating the 80th anniversary of the allied invasion of normandy. the two world leaders are expected to deliver joint remarks later this hour. the other breaking news is out of israel. four hostages rescued alive, 245 days after their capture by hamas on october 7th. shortly after news of the rescue, the war cabinet minister the latest statement where he was expected to resign from netanyahu is emergency government. that spring and nbc s raf sanchez from tel aviv. what can you tell us? reporter: this raid took place at 11:00 a.m. in broad daylight in central gaza according to the israeli military. hundreds of israeli special forces swarming in and say they rescued the hostages from two separate apartment buildings. we believe that the three male hostages were being held together and noa argamani on the left of your screen was being held on her own in a separate apartment building. the israeli military says they are all in good medical condition. and at a hospital here in the greater tel aviv area. you are seeing on your screen the moment noa argamani was united with her father . we met him on october 8th, 24 hours after his daughter was kidnapped. you can only imagine through his tears and his sobbing he pleaded and pleaded and pleaded with the people holding her not to harm her. and today he is holding his daughter once again. as far as we know, she has not seen her mother yet. who has terminal brain cancer. she is in another hospital in the tel aviv area. she has been telling the world her dying wish was to see her daughter again and we believe that reunion is going to happen sometime today. what about the other hostages that were released? what do we know of their physical state. i can imagine everyone s mental state is in shambles. physically, are they okay? and anything coming from the idf about potential rescue operations for the 120 other hostages that still remain in captivity? reporter: so, three others hostages rescued today are all in good physical condition. we have not seen as much video of them as we have of noa, but we saw two coming off a helicopter in tel aviv they were walking along side israeli forces for all three of the men were also kidnapped from the october 7th music festival. they are shlomi ziv, and meil jan and andrey kozlov . in terms of potential other rescues, it is important to put this in perspective. we are months into this war. and israel has rescued seven hostages alive. in months. as much as there is celebration across israel today, i don t think anyone is operating under the illusion that all the hostages are going to be rescued like this. there is still an understanding in this country that to get most all of those 120 hostages back, it is most likely that there will have to be some kind of deal with hamas. and it is not clear at this point what sort of impact today s rescue will have on the negotiations. officials and site guys are saying 50 people were killed by israeli fire during this raid. and the head of hamas is political wing is saying if israel believes it can change the situation through force, it is delusional. it s also unclear whether this successful rescue today may make regimen netanyahu feel slightly less political pressure to negotiate with hamas for the rest of the hostages and as we know, guys, there is that cease- fire proposal on the table right now laid out by president biden last week and the world is waiting to see whether or not hamas will accept it. nbc s raf sanchez live from tel aviv. thank you. we will be monitoring development this hour. let s bring in our negotiator and senior fellow for the carnegie endowment for international peace. your thoughts, can we pick up where raf sanchez left off. your thoughts on these new developments. four hostages have been rescued by the idf. in central rafah today. on a human level, for a nation that has been in a state of collective ptsd since october 7th, this comes as an extraordinary moment and also a demonstration for israeli defense force which bears tremendous guilt and probably shame for the surprise attack on october 7. it reflects to a degree the competency and professionalism and courage which has long characterized many of the idf operations. on a political level, it does present, i think, i sort of victory of the netanyahu narrative. the longer we remain in gaza, the longer is really intelligence operates with the proximity to figure out where hostages are. and in essence it validates that narrative. on the other hand, 120 hostages , 30 plus israelis were killed on october 7th. the bodies were brought to gaza to trade or they died in captivity. the grid my reminder of the degree of difficulty that the israeli face it does reaffirm that israel suggests 56% of israeli public favor the biden cease-fire for hostage negotiations. i think it is a mixed message, but today, i think many israelis are ecstatic with the news that the redemption of israelis which represents a identity for that state of israel, it s a moment and with enormous satisfaction. david you still have 120 people that are being held captive. you still have a question mark about hamas response to joe biden s proposal. netanyahu reticence to engage in discussions around the two state solution. and israeli people in many respects very apprehensive about the leadership of netanyahu and in the prosecution of this war. so, even though this is an important opportunity and hope, those reality still exists and at one point, at what point, does that kick back in? not only should prosecutors be concerned that the entire electorate by larger measure the height entire american people should be concerned. i think donald trump is shown when he s going to do something regardless of how ridiculous it is, he will do it and particularly if you look at the judiciary and dogs and everything else that occurred during his a administration, we have evidence this is someone who intends to enact whatever it is he has to to keep his word in that regard. this is something that even as ridiculous as it sounds, to cause extreme amount of concern. as i listen to him during that voiceover a moment ago, i thought to myself, donald trump ran for president because they brought the charges. it wasn t that they brought the charges because he is running for president. people can construct any maneuver necessary to enact his retribution, as he says, on the judiciary for whatever he feels they have done unjustly to him. here s the thing. it is not just trumpet it is his cronies. take a listen to what they had to say. unless republicans unshackle themselves from their self- imposed restraints, and are as ruthless and fighting to save america as the democrats and fighting to destroy america, every facet of republican party politics and power has to be used right now to go to toe to toe with marxism and beam apps communist. all of this is about one thing. it s about shutting down the maga movement and shutting down grassroot conservatives and shutting down president trump. there is not a built that will ever shut me up. all victory to mag a. i m sorry, it is real early in the morning to hear from those two but i think it is important to hear what they are talking about. the other thing that strikes me, they used to be they threats of prosecution. a year ago, you had the former president s and he would go after president biden and now you have adding by name hillary clinton, alvin bragg to that list, the threat is becoming increasingly specific. it is becoming increasingly specific and it s really chilling rhetoric to hear. you hear this and it undermines the rule of law. this rhetoric. but i think what is important is that trunk, if he is elected, what is going to matter is who the people are around him. people will like maybe steve manning, and he knows from his previous administration that if he selects people who push back against him and are willing to stop him, he s not going to get what he wants. so i think this time around, one of the things that will be different there are these promises of retribution may, is that trump is going to be thinking about who it is that he will be putting in his potential administration and this time around, i think it will be much less willing to put people in power who are going to say no. charles, here is my thing with all of this. the fact that we are still talking about this almost as if it is this universe of maga and trump and the democrats trying to battle them but at the core of it is a political party and institution that support that party, heritage for example. that are hell-bent on one thing. retribution, payback. you got the new york times noting that the intensity of anger and open desire for using the criminal justice system against democrats at the verdict surpasses anything seen before and trump s tumultuous years and national politics. what is different now is the range of republicans who are saying retaliation is necessary and who are no longer cloaking their intent with euphemisms. a couple things. what the hell are they so angry about ? when they had control of both the house, senate and white house, they did nothing with it. they did not we are going to change, were going to put in these polys, didn t happen. yet, the american people sit back and look at this and they are like, let s do it again. let s put the same people that listen to miller. you listen to bannon and the american people are saying, give me more of that. because right now, donald trump and joe biden are tied or trump is slightly ahead because people are paying a buck more for gas. how do you break this? how do you get people to understand what this means for the criminal justice system, what it means under the rule of law, what it means when a president, a former president running for office again, wants to throw people tripped up it s not just going to be the people they see on television. this will extend to everybody else downstream. michael, i have to say, we have to take a step back. i m glad you frame the question the way you did because republicans have shown they want to have the authority of the rule of tyrants but accountability of toddlers. what i mean is if you remember during midterm elections, i said republicans were politicizing the issue of crime and justice in america and they got mad at me for saying it. we have seen that play out on the national scale particularly in the wake of donald trump s conviction are in new york. we cannot enter into my face any further we we are allowing the just the system which is supposed to be there, balanced and equal, to be used as a political weapon. that is ultimately what republicans are seeking to do. they realize when it speaks to the notion of accountability there is a possibility that their leading candidate will be put in jail or held accountable under the rule of law. what do they want to do? [ engine revving ] [ laughing ] the dodge hornet r/t. the totally torqued-out crossover. we have to talk about the alvin bragg. i am just okay. for people who don t know jim jordan sent a letter to the manhattan district attorney alvin bragg asking him to testify. if this sounds familiar it is because the committee has not made clear the scope of the testimony and this is bragg s response and they are saying we look forward to discussing with the committee staff how the office may accommodate the invitation but also protect the integrity of an ongoing terminal prosecution. this to me, the best way to protect new york s sovereign interest is to not legitimize the shenanigans. this reminds me of when fani willis got a similar letter and she told jim jordan where they could put it. it is exactly like the fani willis situation sherry. fani willis situation. i think it s understandable here that alvin bragg does want to testify because trump has made so many false claims about this prosecution and specific prosecutors. he has claimed for example that matthew calendula is a plant from the biden administration so i understand why it is that he wants to maybe go and testify and it is to be seen whether he actually will end up doing so. he says in this letter he would not do so until after sentencing on july 11th but i think that it is really some dangerous ground to walk on here because it very well could be the case that there you know, he gets into a situation where there are things that are selectively edited from the testimony. while it is understandable that alvin bragg want to testify, he really will have to be careful and try to really limit the scope of the questioning if he does end up testifying. i saw michael steele shuffle his papers and when i see that, it s his thing. this brother needs to stay his behind home. he does not need to do this because all this is is the biggest pumpkin move of the year. if he shows up, those individuals on that committee are there for one purpose. and that is to hang him politically. that is what it is. the sound bites are just the beginning of it. remember, charles, the president whether you do it now or after sentencing, there is an appeals process. this thing isn t over. this is still going. why would he want to legitimize the take down of his prosecution , the successful takedown of his prosecution of a former president based on the facts and the law, right? a jury found donald trump and convicted him. why go back and subjected to a political process where the feds have no authority and congress has no authority here to call him up and asked him about his prosecution. michael, you re absolutely right. i could not agree with you more. i think alvin bragg is operating from a spacer he thinks he has justice on his side and nothing to hide. he can defend that. the problem is the arena you are talking about this committee, they are led by jim jordan and don t care about truth or justice. we wouldn t be having this conversation if they did because we also know if donald trump was acquitted or a mistrial, he would not have been subpoenaed. this is only the function of donald trump being convicted and this is not anything that alvin bragg needs to engage in. leave it alone. can you repeat that one point . if donald trump had been found not guilty or a mistrial, what happened? this would not be happening in jim jordan would have not issued that subpoena. let us add to the list. clarence thomas finally acknowledging the lavish gifts he received among the disclosures. two vacations and 2019 that were funded by billionaire harlan crow. are you seeing the type of energy from members of the house and senate to appropriately investigate the supreme court given the level of crisis we are seeing out of this court? focused on memory the 80th anniversary of the date. focus has now shipped to modern- day challenges and conflicts. president biden and his administration are now working to remedy progressives restoration over his newly signed executive action to tighten border security. his moves which would simply shut down asylum request once the average number of encounters top money 500 is met with backlash from most republicans and some democrats. for different reasons. joining us now is congressman greg casar and good morning, congressman. thank you for having me on. sir, your first initial thoughts when you found out about this executive order. is my understanding the white house did a round of calls to members of congress and a number of progressive allies to give them a heads up of what the president s order would be. executive action, pardon me. we know this has been building up and potentially coming because it is my first term and i m sitting here in san antonio, texas, where we welcome so many thousands of immigrants over the last few years. we have seen how they basically , republicans, have covered up for every failure there is i pointing to some vulnerable group of people. right now they are trying to pick on poor and desperate families fleeing violence especially from latin america. i think they have been setting up this trap that unfortunately president biden has been pushed into with this executive order. so, my first reaction we need to provide better alternative and more progressive vision for why we need a better immigration system rather than falling into the republican trap which makes immigration less legal disorder actually closes legal pathways, restricts legal pathways to migration, which is the opposite of the direction we should be going in. how do you reconcile that with the vast majority of americans who have an opposite view of what you just described? they don t have a progressive view of immigration policy. they have a more restrictive view of immigration policy in the president is trying to walk a very fine line here. given that neither the congress nor prior administrations have done squat on the border. so, it rests on his desk in the face of a very contentious election against a demagogue who wants to round people up and ship them somewhere. outside the united states for he doesn t care where. and the american people seemingly are applauding that because they are giving him the upper hand on immigration policy. so, how do you how does the present walk that line? if this is not the way to walk it? you have made some really important points and i will tackle a few of them. first of all, i am a supporter of the president and donald trump has been the most anti- emigrant president not just in modern history but as long as anyone can remember. we have to be strongly opposed to his presidency. i do not enjoy disagreeing with my own president on this executive order. the problem is, republicans in the congress has spent much of their time as possible keeping the border and immigration system is broken as possible. of course, the average american disagrees with saying these difficult images on the border. seeing people stuck in lines, sucking camps, there is not an orderly process. but it has been republican officials who have caused that. they are the arsonist and they try to track tried to blame president biden, the firefighters, for the flames they had set. so instead we should go to your question, what with the american people truly support? where should we go? one, or legal pathways so folks can apply to come here. i believe that most americans do not disagree with many progressives on immigration. they just want to see a more legal and orderly pathway. second, we actually should try to find ways to reduce some of that burden and resource strength on border communities. this order will not reduce the number of people getting pushed out and displaced from latin america, immigration doesn t start on the border. it starts in their home country. we have to have a conversation about why there are record numbers of people being pushed out of their homes. that is why i am drafting legislation to address how they are pushing folks out of their homes without resulting democracy. we need to change the policies that leave latin american countries in debt and we have to stop pushing people out of their homes before we blame asylum-seekers. especially as we recognize d-day. we fought for the values i learned in world war ii that we should not be turning people away from violent and destruction. that is when we set up the laws that we should be protecting. i want to make sure we get to this. is reporting that the white house in addition to all this is looking at the possibility of parole in place for undocumented spouses of u.s. citizens. if you ask me, that is a political lay-up and about keeping american families together. your counsel to the white house suggest a series of executive actions and authorities that would in fact enhance and benefit immigration in this country. we got to get that done. i appreciate your bringing that up. we remember when president biden was running for re- election in trying to protect dreamers and their parents as well. how important that was for the latino community and our economy and campaign. look at themselves. it seems like this is exactly who some people want to be. the reality of it is, this is not all republicans. the folks in the election process, the republicans don t have the numbers to command 70, 60%, 50% of the vote. they don t. they make up in total about, what? 32%? in a general election of identified voters. i think we have to be honest about that. in this moment of commemorating the day, and normandy, and all the men and women, quite honestly, who sacrificed on the day is a profound message back to us to say, history is not just something that goes to the dustbin. it is something that you put in the soul of the country. two reminded of its virtues and values. when you are confronted with an existential enemy, like donald trump, and i use those were
